F.C. United of Manchester is an English semi-professional football club based in Bury, Greater Manchester that plays in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. It was formed in 2005 by Manchester United supporters opposed to American businessman Malcolm Glazer's controversial takeover of the club. The supporters own the club and vote on how the club is run.

The club entered the North West Counties Football League Division Two in 2005, winning the league in their inaugural season. In their second season, they were crowned champions of North West Counties Football League Division One and were promoted to the Northern Premier League. The 2007–08 season saw them finish second in the Northern Premier League Division One North and gain promotion through the end of season play-offs. Since then they have played in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, reaching the play-off final in 2010–11. The club also reached the Second Round Proper of the FA Cup in the 2010–11 season. F.C. United has played at Gigg Lane since its formation in a ground-share with Bury. However, the club has applied for planning permission to build its own ground in north Manchester in time for the 2012–13 season. The team is managed by former professional football player Karl Marginson.

The club was founded in 2005 by supporters of Manchester United. Although they had various reasons for their dissatisfaction, the prime catalyst for F.C. United's formation was the 12 May 2005 hostile takeover of Manchester United by the American businessman Malcolm Glazer. After the name "F.C. United" was rejected by the Football Association for being too generic, all those who had pledged money to the club were asked to vote on a name. On 14 June 2005, it was announced that "F.C. United of Manchester" had been chosen, beating "A.F.C. Manchester 1878", "Manchester Central" and "Newton Heath United". "F.C. United" continues to be used as an abbreviated form of the club's name. Karl Marginson was appointed as the club's manager on 22 June 2005, and the club held trials for players on 26 June 2005. Just under 900 players applied to take part in the trials, of whom 200 were selected to do so and 17 were chosen to play for F.C. United. By 6 July 2005, over 4,000 people had pledged money to F.C. United and the club had over £100,000 in the bank.

During their formation, the owners of Leigh Railway Mechanics Institute F.C. asked F.C. United to take over their club, however United refused the takeover offer as they believed that taking over an existing club would be hypocritical, given that F.C. United was formed as a result of Manchester United's takeover.

Kit and logo

F.C. United's club colours are red, white and black—the same colours worn by Manchester United. However, the shirt bears no sponsorship logo, as it was written into the club's constitution that the club should not have a shirt sponsor. Despite this, the club is sponsored as a whole by mxData, a mobile application developer. The club's first kit was a plain red shirt, white shorts and plain black socks. The club introduced a new home shirt for the 2007–08 season with a striped collar and striped ends on the sleeves which lasted until 2009. This was changed for the 2009–11 seasons to a red shirt with a black and white stripe down the left side, manufactured by Admiral Sportswear. However, for seasons 2011–13 the club has reverted back to a plain red shirt, manufactured by O'Neills. The club's second kit, worn when playing away against a team with a predominantly red kit, is all white with a red trim, black shorts and white socks. The club also has an alternative plain blue kit for playing against a team with a red and white kit. In past seasons a white shirt with a diagonal black stripe has been used as the second kit.

The club's badge is red, white, black and yellow, and incorporates elements from the Manchester coat of arms: a ship representing Manchester's industry, and three stripes representing the three rivers that flow through Manchester.

Stadium

Since the club's formation, F.C. United have not had their own home ground. Instead, they ground-share Gigg Lane with Bury F.C.

On 25 March 2010, the club announced plans to build their own 5,000-capacity football ground in Newton Heath, the original home of Manchester United. The development was planned to be located on the site of the current Ten Acres Lane sports centre and would have cost £3.5 million, to be financed by public donations, a Community Shares issue and grant funding. However, it was announced on 4 March 2011 that Manchester City Council had backed out from funding the stadium, but that they had pledged to help F.C. United build a stadium in a new location with reduced costs. On 5 April 2011 it was revealed that F.C. United were considering a new site in the Broadhurst Park area of Moston, Manchester. Detailed information about the new facility, including the tentative name Moston Community Stadium, was released on 9 June 2011.

Supporters

As F.C. United is owned by its supporters, each member can vote on how the club is run, including: voting for board members; designs; and season ticket prices. Most F.C. United supporters still support Manchester United and many were previously season ticket holders at Old Trafford. F.C. United fans are known for the large range of songs that they sing at matches, and the atmosphere created by fans has been praised in the media. However, supporters have been known to set off flares during big games. During their first season (2005–06), F.C. United had the second-highest average attendance in English non-League football with an average gate of 3,059, and were the 87th best supported club across all divisions. Attendances fell in the next two seasons and they were the 92nd best supported club in 2006–07 and 100th best supported club by 2007–08. Their average league attendance has since levelled out at approximately 2,000 per game.

Organisation

F.C. United is an Industrial and provident society. Membership is obtained by paying an annual fee of £12 to the club (£3 for children), but each member receives only one share in the club and is entitled to a single vote at meetings, regardless of the amount donated. The board consists eleven members who are elected by the members of the club. The club has two full-time employee positions: Andy Walsh as chief executive and Lindsey Robertson as club secretary. Andy Walsh was heavily involved in the club's formation.

The club's manifesto includes the following core principles:

-The Board will be democratically elected by its members

-Decisions taken by the membership will be decided on a one member, one vote basis

-The club will develop strong links with the local community and strive to be accessible to all, discriminating against none

-The club will endeavour to make admission prices as affordable as possible, to as wide a constituency as possible

-The club will encourage young, local participation—playing and supporting—whenever possible

-The Board will strive wherever possible to avoid outright commercialism

-The club will remain a non-profit organisation

Future aspirations

-Partway into their second season at their Annual General Meeting in November 2006, the club outlined aspirations for the next six years:

-Winning promotion in three successive seasons to take them to Conference North by 2009

-Reaching an average of 5,000 supporters per home game by 2009

-Building their own 7,000–10,000 capacity stadium, as close to the centre of Greater Manchester as possible, by 2012

-Developing their own training facilities by 2009

-Starting a women's team for the 2007–08 season

Their aspirations have had mixed results. The club did achieve two successive promotions after the AGM, but have remained in the Northern Premier League Premier Division since 2008 missing out on their Conference North target. Rather than fulfilling the aim of 5,000 supporters per home game, crowds have declined in all but one of their seasons so far. Progress was being made on plans to develop their own stadium, until funding was cut in early 2011. After this setback, the club is pressing ahead with plans to build a stadium in the Moston area of north Manchester in time for the 2012–13 season. They have teamed up with The Manchester College for use of their training facilities and to operate a women's team since 2009.

Criticism

F.C. United and its founders have been both criticised and supported by fans of Manchester United and the media, with some fans viewing those who chose to leave to follow F.C. United as "traitors". Notably, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has questioned the loyalty of fans who decided to form the club and the motivation behind the forming of F.C. United in a 2006 book:

I'm sorry about that. It is a bit sad that part, but I wonder just how big a United supporter they are. They seem to me to be promoting or projecting themselves a wee bit rather than saying, "at the end of the day the club have made a decision, we'll stick by them. It's more about them than us.

—Sir Alex Ferguson, The Official Manchester United Diary of the Season (2006)

Playing as FCUM:

You will need to load all players from clubs in England, or use a retain players file:

Retain players file: http://www.mediafire...706jaim4ttprck3 (based on Dafuge's Challenge 2010 retainer file)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\football manager 2012\data\db\1200\edt (for Steam users)

There are three ways to play as FC United:

1) Download an English Leagues file (RTC/Uncle Ron's)

2) The holiday-retire-load method of promoting an unplayable team from the 7th tier:

a) Add yourself as an unemployed manager.

B) Go on holiday until 23rd June 2012, SAVE, then go on holiday for one day.

c) Retire your manager.

d) Add a new manager (the one you'll use for the save) and look in the Blue Square North for FC United.

If FC United isn't there, reload the save on 23rd June, holiday for one day and continue from step C.

Can YOU get FC United where they want to be? Can YOU get them their own stadium? Can YOU make FC United the biggest team in Manchester?

Good luck!

nice thread mate.

looking to manage FCUM on the new FM12 so to get it straight i have to first load all players from England then proceed with step 2? Or can i just do step 2 without loading all players from England?

Thanks

Cheers :)

If you don't either load all players from England or use the retain player file, you will not have the real FC United squad, instead you will have 'grey' players.

Step 1) involves using a downloaded database to play from the Northern Premier league, whereas using step 2)will involve holidaying to get FC promoted in-game into a playable division (Blue Square North).

Hope this helps!

ill be doing step 2 so how many times do you think ill hav to reload until FCUM become available. is there a high chance they come available.

in the last game managed to get havant and waterloo promoted to league 1 before jumping ship so will be looking forward to another great longterm save.

On FM11 it took me between 1 and 10 tries on the times I made new savegames. Hopefully their reputation is around the same.

TG, are you going to go for an Defuge's challenge style save, or are you going to load more countries? I'm planning on loading the same countries I did in my FM11 FC United save, which were England, France, Holland, Italy, Spain and Germany with all their leagues loaded. All other countries will be view only. I'll have Top Players from all continents loaded as well as all players from England and Reunion (just incase Reunion has as many great players as it did in FM11). Last year that equaled about 68000 players, but if it's a lot more than that in FM12 I'll cut back slightly on the foreign lower leagues loaded.

Sorry about all the posts, but I've just found out something while setting up a custom database size. You can actually set it so that players from leagues lower than the BSN/BSS are loaded up, which is an awesome addition to the database setup process.

Edit: Here goes the holidaying! :D

It starts! http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af113/wheatorules/FC%20United%20FM12/FCUnitedOverview_Profile.png

Karl Marginson signed some pretty good players in his last year with FC United. Here's who he signed: http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af113/wheatorules/FC%20United%20FM12/FCUnitedTransfers_History.png

I'll still need to sign some more players, as the squad needs strengthening if I want to go for promotion.

I'm having absolutely no luck finding players to sign. I got a pretty good scout, but when i tick to filter out unrealistic targets, all i get is rubbish players in really low level teams.

Same mate, really having the scrape the barrel to find any decent players. I've got 7 days till the start of the season and i've signed 4 players :/

I've not signed one yet. I've trialed a few but not found anyone that makes me go "Oo, he's a definite purchase." It's definitely going to be a tough task to win the BSN in my first season this year. FC United have been given odds of 8-1 though, so there's a chance I can scrape through the playoffs.

Who have you signed so far?

Managed to get some players, but its more for squad depth than players with talent.

I'm having massive issues getting a decent Assistant Manager, even with rep on obscure - no-one wants to even negotiate. (Though this in 3.Liga in Germany, not started with FC yet...)

It's a toughy this year, especially with a team like FC United. Their rep must be really low. I'm even having problems signing good players for Malmo this year, and they're in the Champions League. I thought the lure of Champions League football may interest some players, but it hasn't. Plus, Malmo has naff all transfer budget and wage budget compared to last year.

So that's my first pre-season with FC United finished. Here's how things went.

Friendly Results

As you can see, I went for a mixture between money makers, easy matches, and matches to test against same level competition. I'm pleased with the result against Colwyn Bay, as it shows we can beat other BSN teams.

Transfers

I let a fair few players contracts run out just because I didn't think they were needed. I got rid of Mike Norton, which may seem like a bad idea, but I did bring in three new strikers. I reckon they're an improvement on Norton.

Here's my signings in more detail:

Omer Riza: A veteran striker who started him career with Arsenal, before moving to West Ham. Most recently played for Histon, and did pretty well for them.

Javlon Campbell: A young striker who spent a few years with Bolton. I paid £7000 for him, and hopefully he's worth it.

Liam Wilkinson: A young winger who can play on both sides. Started out with Sheffield Wednesday.

Ben Williamson: Another young striker. Has played for Bournemouth and Port Vale.

That's that. My first league match is against Worcester, and I'm looking forward to it. I'll update everyone after 10 or so games.

Started a FCUM earlier today and enjoying it so far but that's because everything is going well at the minute. Started my game off struggling to find anyone to buy and any staff to bring in. Eventually managed to bring quite a few players in as well as Barry Hayles as assistant manager.

Heres a few screenies of my transfers and start to the season.

I start unemployed and go holiday for 1 year, luckily on the first try only FC United been promoted to Blue Square North, now managing it

Won the league and FA Trophy (beat Blue Squre Premier team in semis and finals) on the first season, now on holiday waiting for next season playing in Blue Square Premier....

The most memorable moment is drawn together win Man Utd in FA Cup 3rd round at old trafford (lost 0-3 there:p)

Now in stage of releasing all the current player (they are on non-contract basis so no compensation need to paid). I sign 25 new player last season (all contract expired player, not even one include transfer fee since wage budget is important to me), maybe doing so again this season:D

Like Dr Eskenen, FC United were promoted at the end of the first season - challenge accepted.

The only real issue was the lack of squad depth. the players seem quite capable but an injury crises and we're stuffed.

I've reached December and a real gung-ho attitude means that we are top. a point a head of the chasing pack with played 17. W10 D3 L4. F39 A26. We can score, but we can't defend.

Matty Wolfenden is my best striker with 9 goals in 15, but my top goal scorer is my new DC Chris Mchale with 12 in 16. i strongly urge checking him out.

After my first attempt at a save failed with York, I have decided to start with FC. I'm going to be playing alongside the dafuges challenge. Last season I got FC to the Championship, and hopefully I'll be able to overcome that final step on this years game.

Will post up my signings in a bit. Possibly the best signing I have made so far is Pablo Couñago.

  • 1 month later...

So, my second run with FC United (which hopefully won't come to an abrupt end due to a virus) is underway. The friendlies are all over, and I'm all set for my first game of the season. The friendly matches themselves went quite terribly. http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af113/wheatorules/FC%20United%20FM12/2012-02-03_00003.jpg Nine matches, and only one draw and one win. I did go for some money makers, but the games I did hope to do OK in, I didn't.

In terms of the transfer market, I signed 13 players and got rid of 12. http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af113/wheatorules/FC%20United%20FM12/2012-02-03_00002.jpg This may be the reason I did badly in the friendlies, as the team is still trying to gel. I'm sure once the players get used to playing together, they'll be a great team. I'm really happy to have got hold of Danny Uchechi, as he was brilliant for my FC United team in FM11. Thomas Bendiksen, Szilard Nemeth, and Scott Spencer will all hopefully live up to the praise the scouts gave them when I was scouting them.

My first match is against Vauxhall Motors, who finished 3rd in the BSN the previous season. Should be a good challenge, and not really a team I'd have faced first if I had the choice. I'll update everyone who reads this after 10 or so league games, so look out for my update in the next day or two.

Some great signings there mate, Nemeth will be excellent for you.

Think I'm going to start another save with FC.

Going to try and build around youth with this save. Will obviously bring in some experienced players to begin with but then try and build up my academy etc.

Thanks, and welcome back to the fun of FC United. I think you'll do well with a youthful team. There's plenty of young players up for grabs who would play brilliantly at BS level.

Nemeth has scored 10 goals in 18 matches. Scott Spencer is doing just as well, with 10 goals in 17. As I thought, Danny Uchechi has played brilliantly from an attacking midfield position. Uchechi has scored 10 goals in 16 matches, set up 2 goals, and been man of the match 3 times. I'll be posting a full update soon, as I'm about to reach the 20th league game of the season.

Overall a good start to the season 5 games in. Won 3, drawn 1 and lost 1. The match I lost was 6-0, although I did have a number of players absent.

Currently 1-0 up at home to Southport which would put me into 3rd.

Jamil Adam and Tom Kilbey have been the stars so far. Sticking with Nicky Platt and Jake Cottrell in central midfield.

Here's how I'm doing 20 league games in: http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af113/wheatorules/FC%20United%20FM12/2012-02-07_00001.jpg

In second place with a game in hand, and only 3 points behind Histon. If I can win that extra game we have to play, we can get top of the table. We've already been in 1st place briefly, but I want to finish the season in that top spot.

In terms of league matches, here's how it's gone: http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af113/wheatorules/FC%20United%20FM12/2012-02-07_00002.jpg

5 unlucky losses, but also some really big wins. I'm happy with the league results so far.

I'm not so happy with the FA Trophy results: http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af113/wheatorules/FC%20United%20FM12/2012-02-07_00004.jpg

We went out very early to a team we should have beaten. As you'll see from the league result against Colwyn Bay though, they're a hard team to beat. Oh well, there's always next year, and at least now I can concentrate on he league and the FA Cup.

Here's how the FA Cup has panned out for us: http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af113/wheatorules/FC%20United%20FM12/2012-02-07_00003.jpg

A few replays, but we got to the 3rd round eventually, and drew a great game against Blackburn. That'll get some nice cash in, and I'm going to cross everything in the hope that we pull off a massive upset.

Signed a few more players, and got rid of a few: http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af113/wheatorules/FC%20United%20FM12/2012-02-07_00005.jpg

Curtis Woodhouse (Played mostly at Championship level, then BSP with Rushden) is a veteran midfielder, and a great backup player. Grant Adam (Ex-Rangers) is an excellent keeper, and became my instant first choice in goal. Ross McKinnon (Ex-Motherwell) is a young left back, who is a bit injury prone but really good when fully fit.

I just signed ex-West Ham midfielder Oliver Lee on a free transfer! Can't wait to play him and see how he does. Oh, and I released Curtis Woodhouse because he's crap and kept demanding first team football. He was signed on a non-contract, so didn't cost anything to release.

Uchechi is brilliant. I'm playing him as a wide attacking midfielder, and he's getting a fair few goals and assists. What formation you playing? I'm playing 4-5-1, and it's going good. My only problem is that my AML and AMR are scoring far more than my striker.

Link to post

Playing a 4-4-2 with Uchechi and Aluko as the attacking wingers. Uchechi is excellent, but only signed him on a season long loan so will hopefully bring him in permanently at the end of the season.

Into the 4th qual. round of the FA cup, where we face Ossett Town away. So that will hopefully mean we will reach the first round.

How are you doing in terms of finances? Making a small loss each month, but hopefully that will change with a good cup run.
