INFORMATION

In the 2010/11 season, PSG was encouraged to display an attacking brand of football, and for the first time since the mid-1990s, PSG was praised for the quality of its football. But the season ended in disappointments with the Coupe de France being lost to Lille, while a 4th place finish in the league was not enough to deliver Champions League qualification. A few days after the season had ended, the sale of the club was finalized, with Qatar Investment Authority becoming the new owners.

The new owners did not take long to make some drastic changes at the club. They brought in Inter manager Leonardo as a director of football and added many new faces to the team.

"PSG spent almost £77M on nine new players in a summer spending spree after new owners Qatari Sports Investments bought the club – including £36M on Argentine playmaker Javier Pastore from Palermo in Italy."

HISTORY

PSG was established on 12 August 1970 after a merger between Stade Saint-Germain and Paris FC. The club has always represented both Paris and nearby Saint-Germain-en-Laye. And with so many people eager to see a big club wearing the capital's colors, the nascent team grew at a stunning pace early on. Top-tier status was attained within four years and by the end of the 1970s, PSG were ready to embark upon a historic decade. PSG tasted French Cup honours in 1982 and 1983, before capturing their first league crown in 1986 – breakthroughs that opened the doors to Europe and some memorable encounters, particularly with Juventus.

history2g.png

The 1990s proved even more fruitful, with PSG entering a golden age after television giants Canal+ bought the club in May 1991. Now enjoying serious investment, the club was able to set their sights steadily higher. PSG were on the move and between 1992 and 1998 they contested two UEFA Cup Winners' Cup finals. Winning in 1996 and reached the UEFA Champions League semifinals once and twice advanced to the same stage of the UEFA Cup. On the domestic scene, results were just as satisfying, with PSG celebrating another League 1 title, three French Cups, two League Cups and just as many Champions Trophy wins.

To the considerable chagrin of the club's supporters, PSG has never threatened to hit those same heights again. Three more trophies have been landed but crisis has never lain far away. PSG's form slipped to 9th in 2004–05 and 2005–06. In 2006–07, they did not impress, failing to reach a cup final and finishing 15th, just three places from relegation. Following their sale by Canal+ to Colony Capital, PSG continued to lose momentum in the league eventually finishing 16th, just three points above the relegation zone. PSG nonetheless won the League Cup and reached the French Cup Final, losing Lyon. In 2008–09, PSG regained fitness and struggled for the title the most part of the season, but finished 6th and out of European action. In the 2009–10, PSG claimed the French Cup and the next season ended in disappointments with the French Cup being lost to Lille, while a 4th place finish in the league was not enough to deliver Champions League qualification. A few days after the season had ended, the sale of the club was finalized, with Qatar Investment Authority becoming the new owners.

CREST

The first crest of PSG appeared in 1970 and consisted of a ball and a vessel which are powerful symbols of the city of Paris. After Paris FC split from Stade Saint-Germain, which kept with the name of Paris Saint-Germain, it was changed to the current crest: the red silhouette of the Eiffel Tower and the white royal cradle of Louis XIV between its legs on a blue background with white edging.

OWNERSHIP

Qatar Investment Authority officially became the majority shareholder of Paris Saint-Germain in 2011. Future Head of the Board, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, presented a five-year plan to take PSG to the top of the tree, in France and abroad. Qatar Investment Authority bought a controlling 70% stake in the club from, now minority, shareholder Colony Capital, who retained 29% of the capital club. The partners will work together to build on Colony Capital's achievements over the last five years in the club, to enhance its visibility and pre-eminence.

SUPPORTERS

The supporters of the club are known as parisiens. In France about 11% of the population are said to be Paris Saint-Germain supporters and worldwide they are the second most popular French club. The Kop of Boulogne is a stand in the Parc des Princes which mainly housed the Boulogne Boys, a supporter group associated with the club. It is known as the "most notorious stand in French football" due to its links with violence and far-right political groups.

STADIUM

PSG’s stadium is Parc des Princes, located in Paris. It was opened in June 1972 and is a football and rugby stadium with no track around the pitch. On 10 November 1973, PSG held their first match at the Parc des Princes during a match against Red Star Saint-Ouen. The following year, PSG left the Stade Georges Lefèvre and moved in at Parc des Princes permanently. The capacity is 47, 428.

TRAINING GROUND

The training center of PSG is called Camp des Loges and is located in the commune of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, which is in the western suburbs of Paris. The center's hosts training sessions for the senior team and also serves as the home facility for the club's Reserves and Academy. The total grassed surface area, including football pitches is 24,446 m² in a total surface area of 28,888 m², it contains all the necessary amenities for a club level. This includes an aqua-therapy centre, massage room, treatment room, weight room, relaxation room, offices for staff and presidential hierarchy, press zone and a recreational area.

"PSG has an enormous potential - they are the only big football club in a city of 12 million inhabitants! That's unique in Europe. Our aim is to qualify for the Champions League every year as of 2012. Then, from 2015, we want to play a major role in Le Championnat. We don't want to sign Lionel Messi, but we want to invest in the big stars of tomorrow from all over the world, including France."

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, 30 June 2011

INFORMATION

Nasser Al-Khelaifi clearly wants the stars of tomorrow and he has long-term plans for the club. That is why we didn't see Dimitar Berbatov, Samuel Eto'o or Kaká sign for the club. Some great players has signed for the club during the summer and in Javier Pastore, PSG has as world class player in their hands.

Many experienced players from last season have left the club. Grégory Coupet, Claude Makélélé and Sammy Traoré have retired from football, but Claude Makélélé is still within the club as a director. Ludovic Guily has signed a two-year contract with his old club Monaco. But there are still seven players in the first team squad over 30 years of age. So experience is still there.

This season, the PSG first team squad, is stronger than ever before. Each player has something to offer in their hunt for success.

ANALYSIS OF THE FIRST TEAM SQUAD

The squad analysis will be divided into goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and strikers.

GOALKEEPERS ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

Both first team goalkeepers from last season, Grégory Coupet and Apoula Edel, has left the club after their contract had expired, but the highly rated prospect Alphonse Aréola is still here and still needs time to develop into the future number one at PSG. Clubs will come in for him and try to lure him away, so make sure he stays at the club whatever it takes. Two new goalkeepers have signed for PSG this season, Nicolas Douchez from Rennes and Salvatore Sirigu from Palermo. Both are good goalkeepers but with some excellent reflexes and handling, Salvatore Sirigu should be your first choice. That makes Nicolas Douchez the best backup goalkeeper in the league.

STRENGTH

Two very good goalkeepers and a very talented young home-grown goalkeeper as third choice makes the goalkeeper situation sorted for years to come.

WEAKNESS

None of the players are extremely fast and that can be a problem if they come up against a team playing a lot of through balls.

DEFENDERS ★★★★★★ (6 out of 10)

Sammy Traoré, now retired from football, won’t be missed in the PSG central defence. He has been replaced by both Milan Bisevac from Valenciennes and Diego Lugano from Fenerbahçe. Together with Zoumana Camara, Sylvain Armand and Mamadou Sakho they compete for a place in the first eleven in central defence. Mamadou Sakho, club captain, is the best defender at the club and still very young, only 21 years of age. Clubs will come in for him, so it is very important to keep him at every cost. If he stays injury free he can have himself a place in that defence for the next 10-15 years. Another player in the squad is Ivory Coast International Siaka Tiéné who plays at left back. On the other flank, at right back, Christophe Jallet and Ceará fight for the spot. I recommend rotating them. They are two very similar players.

STRENGTH

Most of the defenders are strong, both mental and physical. There are also some influenced players at the back, especially in central defence.

WEAKNESS

Overall they are not very fast and that might be a problem when they come up against team with fast players or counter-attacking style of play.

defenders.png

MIDFIELDERS ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

PSG will miss the experience of Claude Makélélé, but they have replaced the defensive midfielder with Blaise Matuidi from Saint-Ètienne and Mohammed Sissoko from Juventus. Two extremely good replacements and they will fight for a place in central midfield with Mathieu Bodmer and Clément Chantôme. On the wings, Nenê has made the left flank his own and new signing from Roma, Jérémy Ménez will play on the right flank. Included in the squad this season is Jean-Christophe Bahebeck, only 18 years of ago with a lot of potential. He will act as a backup for both wings. Finally, Javier Pastore, the big summer signing from Palermo. No doubt the best player at the club and he plays best as a central attacking midfielder. With some fantastic technical skills, flair and determination he can act as a playmaker and will offer the team goals and assists.

STRENGTH

The midfield is full of different quality. Some are defensive minded, some are attacking minded, some have pace, some have great technical ability and some knows how to score goals.

WEAKNESS

A problem with the midfield is the teamwork and work rate of the wingers. They need to put more effort in to help the team when they don’t have the ball.

midfielders.png

STRIKERS ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

PSG signed Kévin Gameiro from Lorient as a striker this summer and with some lightening pace and great finishing he will score the goals for the club this season. Guillaume Hoarau will offer something different. He is tall, strong and good in the air. The competition for a place in the striker position is tough and Mevlüt Erdinç, Péguy Luyindula and Loris Arnaud will only be backup players.

STRENGTH

The option in attack is good if you play with one striker. You can chose from a small and fast striker and a tall and strong striker. Both will score goals.

WEAKNESS

Injuries to Kévin Gameiro and Guillaume Hoarau can be costly. Mevlüt Erdinç once scored 15 goals in the league but it is uncertain if he can repeat his achievement.

INFORMATION

The PSG first team squad contains 24 players. Here is a player analysis of each player sorted by squad number.

= RECOMMENDATION

The recommendation is a combination of a player's current ability and potential ability.

The star does not indicate the current ability of the player.

1. NICOLAS DOUCHEZ ★★★★★★ (6 out of 10)

FRANCE GOALKEEPER

Douchez has had some good seasons at Rennes and decided to try his luck here at PSG. I don’t think he has the ability to be first choice keeper here as long Sirigu is injury free. No doubt he has quality and he showed it at Rennes but here he must accept to sit on the bench, at least to start with.

2. CEARÁ ★★★★★ (5 out of 10)

BRAZIL DEFENDER / WING BACK (RIGHT, LEFT)

Ceará, an attacking Brazilian full back, signed in 2007 and one year left on the contract. With Tiéné playing on the left side you should play Ceará on the right side as a right back. I recommend rotating him and Jallet in pre-season to see which one is the best option to start with when the season starts.

3. MAMADOU SAKHO ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENDER (CENTRE)

Sakho is known for his leadership credentials, his tireless engine, hard-working attitude, and his tackling ability. He has also been praised for his "physical and tactical qualities". He is also the captain of PSG. How old is he? 21. Sakho is invaluable for PSG and shouldn’t be for sale at any cost. He primarily plays as a centre back, but can also deputize as a left back if necessary. But still, he’s the best centre back at the club so keep him there.

4. MILAN BISEVAC ★★★★★★ (6 out of 10)

SERBIA DEFENDER (CENTRE)

I am pleased to have Bisevac in the squad. I don’t see him as a regular starter, but as a third choice at centre back. If Sakho or Lugano gets injured or is suspended I know he can come in and do a good performance.

5. SIAKA TIÉNÉ ★★★★★★ (6 out of 10)

IVORY COAST DEFENDER / WING BACK / MIDFIELDER /ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (LEFT)

It is great to have a player like Tiéné in the squad. He can play everywhere on the left side. But his best position is at left back and that is a position lacking players so he has made that position his own.

6. ZOUMANA CAMARA ★★★★ (4 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENDER (CENTRE)

I think it is there for anyone to see, Camara isn’t a first choice at centre back anymore. Two more central defenders, Bisevac and Lugano have been signed this summer and both are better than Camara, and younger. You may consider what you want to do with him. Don’t forget he’s been loyal to the club for a while now. Maybe reward him with a new contract with a view of being a future coach for the club?

7. JÉRÉMY MÉNEZ ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

FRANCE ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (RIGHT, LEFT, CENTRE)

Ménez has been described as a ambidextrous technically skilled playmaker with undeniable pace and can play in any attacking position. Still only 24 years of age he returns to France, after an adventure in Italy, to the club he supports – PSG. I am excited to see his skills on the pitch and want to play him as a right winger. He has the pace and flair to beat his man, then hit a shot on goal or a cross. Don’t be afraid of his low work rate. Instead try to find a way to make room for him in your side.

8. PÉGUY LUYINDULA ★★★★ (4 out of 10)

FRANCE ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (LEFT) / STRIKER

During his time at PSG Luyindula has often been used as a subersub and appeared to play better without the pressure of being an automatic starter. I see no problem in continue with this. His contract expires next summer and he’s not getting any younger.

9. GUILLAUME HOARAU ★★★★★★ (6 out of 10)

FRANCE STRIKER

Hoarau has the big responsibility together with Gameiro to score goals for the club. Gameiro is small and fast, Hoarau is the opposite – strong, a good header of the ball and the tallest player in the club. If you use him in the right way, as a target man with wingers on either flank and cross balls in to the box for Hoarau to challenge, he will give you goals.

10. NENÊ ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

BRAZIL MIDFIELDER / ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (LEFT)

Nenê is a left winger and is most known for his crossing ability, as well as being a free kick specialist and last season he scored 15 goals in the league for PSG. I wouldn’t mind him keeping that form. He is competent playing both as a central attacking midfielder and as a right winger, so that’s an option to consider if you want him on another position in the team.

11. MEVLÜT ERDINC ★★★★★★ (6 out of 10)

TURKEY STRIKER

Erdinc is a player I am unsure about. He is the third choice striker behind Gameiro and Hoarau but he lacks composure, concentration and creativity. I just can’t see him getting any goals. On the other hand he is one the most physical players at the club.

12. MATHIEU BODMER ★★★★★★ (6 out of 10)

FRANCE MIDFIELDER / ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (CENTRE)

Bodmer is a bit special. He is strong, big and tall, but also very skillful. Both his passing and technique are great. He loves playing in the hole just behind the main striker in a central attacking midfield position. I see him as a good squad player and not a regular starter.

14. BLAISE MATUIDI ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER / MIDFIELDER (CENTRE)

I must say I am delighted this guy replaced Claude Makélélé in central midfield, or in the defensive midfield to be exact. Every team needs a defensive-minded player and PSG has Matuidi who is an expert in the defensive play. Play him as a defensive midfielder just in front the central defence and he will break-up attacks and pass the ball to Pastore or Ménéz and the attack will start to the other end. Matuidi is also a part of the French national team now and then.

15. DIEGO LUGANO ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

URUGUAY DEFENDER (CENTRE)

I think this is the perfect partner for Sakho at centre back. Lugano is a commanding defender, captain for Uruguay and has a lot of experience of football. I’m happy to have him in the team. He recently signed for PSG and after some months or years when he can speak French fluent I might consider him for the vice-captain role.

16. ALPHONSE ARÉOLA ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

FRANCE GOALKEEPER

Aréola is in my eyes the future ‘number one’ goalkeeper for PSG. He has such great potential to develop into a world class player. He is currently third choice but his time will come. I recommend you ask Douchez or Sirigu to act as a role model for him. Top European clubs will come in with offers for him but reject the offers and keep him in the squad and make him your future first choice goalkeeper.

18. LORIS ARNAUD ★★★★ (4 out of 10)

FRANCE ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (RIGHT) / STRIKER

Arnaud is only in the squad as a backup player. I don’t think he has a future at the club. His contract will expire next summer and that would most likely be his exit.

19. KÉVIN GAMEIRO ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

FRANCE STRIKER

Gameiro is a new signing at PSG but he is not unproven in Ligue 1. Last season he scored 22 goals in the league for Lorient. I suspect that’s why PSG has signed him – to score goals. He is no doubt the best striker at the club and only 24 years old. His contract expires in 2015 so don’t forget to extend it. Gameiro is a striker but there is a possibility for him to learn a new position. His ability as right winger is competent, so after some months of learning you could play him in that position. He has also made some games for the French national team and I expect him to have a great career at international level.

20. CLÉMENT CHANTÔME ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

FRANCE MIDFIELDER / ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (CENTRE)

Rising through the ranks of PSG's youth academy, he has already drawn comparisons to Didier Deschamps in terms of his determination and ball-winning ability. In spite of being used sparingly by his different PSG managers, Chantôme is a fan favorite among PSG supporters, because of his homegrown status, his fighting spirit and his fearless attitude on the pitch. Even though he won’t get much playing time with Pastore and Matuidi now in the side, he is a player worth keeping.

22. SYLVAIN ARMAND ★★★★ (4 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENDER (LEFT, CENTRE)

Armand has been at the club since 2004 and always put a good shift in. He is very physical in his playing style and is not the sort of type you should play as an attacking left back. He is more of a defensive left back, but can also play as a centre back. Armand is vice-captain at PSG.

23. MOHAMED SISSOKO ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

MALI DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER / MIDFIELDER (CENTRE)

Sissoko returns to French football after some time in Spain, England and Italy. He is still quality and will play an important part of the defensive play in PSG. He is good enough to be a regular starter but with Matuidi also in that position he may have to sit on the bench. I recommend to play him on away matches with Matuidi in central midfield.

25. JEAN-CHRISTOPHE BAHEBECK ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

FRANCE ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (RIGHT, LEFT)

He is described as a player who is "very fast with both feet" and is a good striker of the ball. Despite beginning his career as a striker, he plays primarily as a winger. Another player from the PSG youth academy with a lot of potential to develop will this season act as a backup winger for Nêne and Ménéz. I think he is a very interesting young player. Give him playing time and see how he does.

26. CHRISTOPHE JALLET ★★★★★ (5 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENDER / WING BACK / MIDFIELDER (RIGHT)

A right back very similar to Ceará with high stamina and always seems to put a decent performance in. It will probably be some rotating with Ceará during the season.

27. JAVIER PASTORE ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

ARGENTINA ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (CENTRE)

One of my favorite players at PSG. Pastore is the best player at the club and I recommend playing him in his favored central attacking midfield position. I know the PSG supporters are extremely excited about this summer signing and I think he will dominate the league. He has not only good technical skills, but also very physical and determined to work for the team. Use him well, threat him well and you will have a happy player doing magic on the pitch for PSG.

30. SALVATORE SIRIGU ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

ITALY GOALKEEPER

A real quality goalkeeper has been signed from Italy and I think Sirigu will be a very good player for PSG. He has Douchez and Aréola just behind him, but until Aréola is ready for first team football, Sirigu will be first choice.

INFORMATION

The PSG reserves & academy is the reserve team and academy of Paris Saint-Germain. The Camp des Loges serves as the home facility for Paris Saint-Germain's Reserves and Academy sides, which both play their home matches at the Stade Georges Lefèvre. It is located in the commune of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, which is in the western suburbs of Paris. The facility is known for its high-level training and several prominent players have passed through the youth training center.

RESERVES

The Reserves squad, Paris Saint-Germain B, is managed by Bertrand Reuzeau. Paris Saint-Germain B play in the Championnat de France Amateurs division, the fourth division of French football and the highest division the team is allowed to participate in. The clubs are split into four parallel groups of 18 with their group affiliation being based on the regional location. The league is open to the best reserve teams in France and amateur clubs in France, although only the amateur clubs with the most points of each group at the end of the season are eligible for promotion to the Championnat National. The best reserve teams of each group, meanwhile, are inserted into a tournament to decide the reserves' champion. The capital club has never won the reserves title of the Championnat de France Amateur.

= RECOMMENDATION

The recommendation is a combination of a player's current ability and potential ability.

The star does not indicate the current ability of the player.

NOTABLE PLAYERS IN THE RESERVE SQUAD

LOÏCK LANDRE ★★★★★ (5 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENDER (CENTRE)

Landre has the potential to be a good central defender for PSG in the future. He still has a long way to go and a loan move can be good for him.

JIMMY KAMGHAIN ★★★★★★ (6 out of 10)

FRANCE ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (RIGHT) / STRIKER

Kamghain is an exciting winger with pace to burn, but he still has a lot of hard work to do before he can be a part of the PSG first team.

NEESKENS KEBANO ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

FRANCE MIDFIELDER (CENTRE) / ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (RIGHT, CENTRE)

Kebano plays as an attacking midfielder and a winger and can be described as an explosive player with good technical ability. He is also very determined. I recommend you to send him out on loan.

ACADEMY

The junior French championship was divided in three groups in 2002: Under-18, Under-16 and Under-14 years. The Under-14 team has only won their group in 2003, while finishing second on goal difference in 2004. The Under-18 team reached the quarterfinals in 2003, and in 2006 David Bechkoura led the team to the club's first league title after their 2-0 victory against Monaco. The Under-16 reached the semifinals in 2004, before finishing runners-up in 2008. Jean-Luc Vasseur's side was defeated in the national final by arch-rivals Marseille despite a good performance. Marseille striker Nicolas Crus scored the only goal of the match in the first period. The French youth competitions adopted the international conventions "U-19" (Under-19) and "U-17" (Under-17) from the 2009–10 season. Jean-Luc Vasseur led the Under-17 squad to the final where after a 4-4 draw PSG lost on penalties against Sochaux in 2010. David Bechkoura's Under-19, meanwhile, repeated the 2006 feat after defeating Monaco on penalties in the final with the encouragement of Paris Saint-Germain's U-17 side, who had played their final the night before (a loss on penalties to Sochaux). PSG's U-19 championship final against Monaco went down to the wire but David Bechkoura's players made the difference in a penalty shootout to claim the win. The championship title is a fitting reward for the entire PSG youth academy, capping off a stellar season that saw its three top teams all win through to the finals in their respective categories.

The championship won by the Under-19 emphasized a great season from the youth ranks as both the CFA and the Under-17 squads reached the playoffs in their respective leagues. After Jordan Lapelosa scored the winning penalty, the whole Parisian expedition invaded the Stade Omnisport d'Orléans. The win in the Under-19 Championship Final against Monaco (0-0, 4-2 on pens) rewarded several years of effective work done by the recruitment and the formation center. These were the same players who had narrowly lost the Under-16 title two years ago. Therefore this success had even more flavor. Unfortunate finalists in their category against Sochaux (4-4, 4-2 pens), the Under-17 mingled at the party and forgot their disappointment. Beyond a victory, it must emphasized the excellent course of this team throughout the year. Jean-Luc Vasseur's players finished unbeaten having scored no fewer than 74 goals and conceded only 10 as they finished 19 points ahead of their nearest rival. The quality of play shown in the final gave high hopes for this generation.

= RECOMMENDATION

The recommendation is a combination of a player's current ability and potential ability.

The star does not indicate the current ability of the player.

NOTABLE PLAYERS IN THE ACADEMY SQUAD

MAIK MAIGNAN ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

FRANCE GOALKEEPER

If things works out well for Maignan, he will compete with Aréola to be first choice goalkeeper at PSG. Ask Douchez or Sirigu to tutor him.

ALVIN ARRONDEL ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENDER (CENTRE)

Arrondel is a good defender for his age. I recommend a senior player tutoring him and then putting him up on the loan list.

ABDALLAH YAISIEN ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

FRANCE ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (RIGHT,CENTRE)

Yaisien is a player with flair. He plays best as a central attacking midfielder. With the right training he can become a good player for PSG.

HERVIN ONGENDA ★★★★★★★★★ (9 out of 10)

FRANCE STRIKER

This is the most exciting player in the whole academy. Ongenda is a future PSG star. Make sure you follow his development closely and create an individual training schedule for him. Gameiro can be a good tutor for him.

ALEXIS SAINRIMAT ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

FRANCE STRIKER

Sainrimat can be a quality player in the future, but then he must improve his goalscoring. An idea would be to transform him into a winger.

IMPROVEMENTS

The squad is relative strong in most areas, especially in midfield, but there is still room for improvements in other positions. You may want to find a quality full back. Tiéné, Ceará and Jallet are not getting younger and are not the players to go for if you want to do well in the European Cups. It could also be a good decision to invest in another winger. Both Ménéz and Nêne are quality players and to add another quality player in that group would be good.

PSG’s transfer policy is to buy younger players with potential to develop into better players, and preferably French players.

"I really get the impression that they want to build the biggest club in France. Being champions with PSG would be an exceptional adventure to experience."

Kévin Gameiro

REALISTIC TRANSFER TARGETS

All the transfer targets are realistic chosen and should consider a move to Paris Saint-Germain. The transfer fee may be a problem in some cases.

= RECOMMENDATION

The recommendation is a combination of a player's current ability and potential ability.

The star does not indicate the current ability of the player.

ALY CISSOKHO ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENDER / WING BACK (LEFT)

Cissokho plays for rivals Lyon and is on of the best left backs in the league. He is a fast player with high stamina and very attacking, but he can also defend and is good at man-marking a player. Still only 23 years old, he is already very established in the league and has played for FC Porto before. He will cost £10M+ but will be an investment for the next 10 years.

MARVIN MARTIN ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

FRANCE MIDFIELDER / ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (CENTRE)

Martin plays as a creative play-making midfielder for Sochaux and is described as a player with very good technique on the ball and excellent vision, which compensates for his relatively small body size. I am sure he will play a big part of the future French national team. He is already a part of it but not a regular starter. It will be problematic to discuss a fee for him with Sochaux, but he’s worth the money, I’m sure about that.

MAHAMADOU DIARRA ★★★★★★ (6 out of 10)

MALI DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER / MIDFIELDER (CENTRE)

Diarra is currently a free agent and is looking for a club. The former Real Madrid player, once sold for £18M is only 30 years and could still perform well in the French league.

YANN M'VILA ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER (CENTRE)

M’Vila operates as a defensive midfielder and is described as a player who possesses excellent defensive abilities and impressive physical strength. He has played very well at Rennes but won’t win anything at the club. I know they rate him very high.

LUCAS MOURA ★★★★★★★★★ (9 out of 10)

BRAZIL ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (RIGHT, LEFT, CENTRE) / STRIKER

The Brazilian wonderkid Lucas Moura is one of the best young players in the world. He can play in any attacking position. 18 years old and has made 7 international games for the Brazilian national team.

LEANDRO DAMIÃO ★★★★★★★★★ (9 out of 10)

BRAZIL STRIKER

I think Leandro Damião will be one of the best strikers in the world. He is very determined and as a footballer he is very all-round. He has pace, is good in the air and scores a lot of goals. Many clubs will be in for him, so make sure you are one step ahead.

YOUNÉS KABOUL ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENDER (RIGHT, CENTRE)

Kaboul is a French international central defender and plays for Tottenham. He can also play at right back and as a defensive midfielder. He is very strong and good in the air and that makes him a force to be reckoned with in the air. He is also really fast and doesn’t have any real weakness. Could cover three positions and would be a quality player in the league.

CHEIK M’BENGUE ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

SENEGAL DEFENDER / WING BACK (LEFT)

Aly Cissokho can be an expensive signing so M’Bengue may be a similar player to have a look at for a much cheaper price. I think Toulouse could accept a bid of £4M for the left back that opted to play for the Senegal national team.

WILLY BOLY ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENDER (CENTRE)

Boly is not a player who could fight for a first team place at PSG, but the central defender could develop into a quality player. Good physical, aggressive and a good header of the ball. I don’t expect Auxerre demanding a big transfer fee for him, maybe around £2M.

MAPOU YANGA MBIWA ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENDER (RIGHT, LEFT, CENTRE) / WING BACK (RIGHT, LEFT)

Montpellier has a really good player in their squad, Yanga Mbiwa can play in any defensive position and is still developing into a better player. He is determined, works well for the team and is good at heading, marking and tackling.

FUTURE TRANSFER TARGETS

It is important to make sure the future of the club is in good hands, and to invest in youth players in an early stage is important for many clubs.

MBAYE NIANG ★★★★★★★★★ (9 out of 10)

FRANCE STRIKER

Niang plays primarily as a striker, though his influence can extend out to the wings and a central attacking midfield position. He is described as a wonderkid and a striker out of the ordinary, and made his professional debut, at the age of 16 last season. I think he is one of the best prospects in France, if not the best.

LEANDRO ★★★★★★★★★ (9 out of 10)

BRAZIL ATTACKING MIDFIELDER (RIGHT, LEFT, CENTRE) / STRIKER

Leandro is often compared to Neymar and is 18 years old, so he can make the move to Europe. Can play in all attacking positions and will defiantly develop to a quality player and be a part of the Brazilian national team in the next years.

EMMANUEL FRIMPONG ★★★★★★★ (7 out of 10)

GHANA DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER / MIDFIELDER (CENTRE)

Frimpong is known for his energy in the midfield and has been compared to current Arsenal player Alex Song and various other African midfielders who have lots of pace and stamina. He has also been called a younger version of Michael Essien because of his hard work in the defensive midfielder role. I don’t think Arsenal wants to sell him and I don’t think he will be interested in a move away from the club, but he is a talented young player and one for the future.

FRANCIS COQUELIN ★★★★★★★★ (8 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER / MIDFIELDER (CENTRE)

Coquelin is a classic defensive midfielder with good passing skills playing for Arsenal. With some training he could also cover some other positions if needed. He is willing to sign for another club on loan, but probably sees his future at Arsenal.

RAPHAËL VARANE ★★★★★★★★★ (9 out of 10)

FRANCE DEFENDER / DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER (CENTRE)

One of the best players in his generation, Varane signed for Real Madrid this summer from Lens. He could do a job for any club in Ligue 1 but Real Madrid won’t sell the 18 years old central defender. Could create a future partnership with Sakho in the central defence and with some training he could also be a good defensive midfielder.

INFORMATION

PSG has this season played a 4-2-3-1 formation with two central defensive midfielder and three attacking midfielders, two on the wings and one in a central playmaker position. So a 4-2-3-1 can work very well on FM. Matuidi and Sissoko as defensive midfielders, Pastore as playmaker, Nêne and Ménéz on the wings and Gameiro in attack.

You can also adapt your team to a 4-3-3 / 4-5-1 formation and play your wingers high up on the pitch and play counter-attacking football.

FORMATIONS

THE 4-3-2-1 FORMATION

The job of the central defenders is consistent with other formations such as 4-4-2 and 4-5-1. They are there to repel opposition attacks by tacking, heading and marking players. The full backs have to defend against opposition attackers, particularly wingers. It is important that they stop the supply line for the striker, so they must be strong in the tackle. Pace is the key if they are up against a fast winger, but they can also be an attacking weapon themselves. A full back with pace, power and good crossing ability is a real asset on the flank as they can stretch the other team's wide players and provide ammunition for strikers.

It is important that the two central defensive midfielders have positional sense in order to protect the back four properly. One of these two is generally more of a tackler, with the other concentrating on distribution. Having two players in front of the back four provides a platform on which the team’s more attacking players can create chances.

The three attacking midfielders can be hard for opposition defenses to pick up, especially if they interchange and run in from deeper positions. To either side of the central playmaker, there are two wider players whose job it is to create chances from the flanks as well as cutting in.

The striker should not lack support as he has three players whose job it is to supply him with through balls. If the players behind the main striker are of genuine quality, the formation can be a dream for a striker as he should receive plenty of balls into the penalty area. The formation can have a big target man who can hold the ball up and lay it off for the oncoming midfielders, or a more nimble striker capable of running on to balls and finishing chances.

psg4231.png

THE 4-3-3 / 4-5-1 FORMATION

Central defenders are charged with heading the ball away, tackling and blocking and their primary role is to stop the opposition strikers and midfielders. The two central defenders can mark zonal marking or take on man-to-man marking roles. The primary role of the fullback is to defend against wingers and opposition full-backs, while helping out the central defenders. How much they go forward is dependent on how attacking a team's outlook may be.

One defensive midfielder will sit back and screen the back four. This player is charged with breaking up opposition attacks, and when the team is on the back foot, acting as an extra member of the defense. But the two around him should be looking to attack as well as defend. A more attacking five-man midfield can be difficult for opponents to deal with as it is hard to pick up advancing midfielders who are making late runs into the box, or passing the ball between them to make space. It is crucial that if a team has attacking intent, the midfielders go forward at regular intervals to support the striker.

While at least one of the central midfielders will be instructed to go forward regularly, this is also the case with the team's wingers. Indeed, if a team is setting out to attack, the formation can look more like a 4-3-3, with the two wingers playing more advanced roles as they look to support the front man, and get into goalscoring positions by cutting in. The winger must still be mindful of his defensive responsibilities, with more and more teams fielding marauding full-backs.

With only one player up top, there is much burden on this striker to perform. It is crucial that he holds the ball up and brings others into play. Pace is also an advantage as the striker will be asked to run on to balls from the midfield. A target man with good control, heading ability and upper body strength like Hoarau can flourish in this position.

INFORMATION

You have just been hired as a new manager for PSG. What to do next?

PERSONAL MESSAGE

Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi will welcome you to the club and assure you that you can trust him in his decisions. He will also give you a big transfer budget to spend on new players.

psgnews1.png

MEET YOUR STAFF

Your current assistant manager Yves Bertucci will ask you to talk to the staff at the club, and they will tell you who they think is the best set-piece taker, but also recommend potential players to buy.

psgnews2.png

TEAM REPORT

Yves Bertucci has also prepared a team report for you to look at.

psgnews3.png

CONTRACTS

Take a look at the contract screen. Many of the older players have contract expiring in the next two years. Do you want to keep any of them? Maybe someone is a future coach and worth keeping?

I would offer a new contract to Guillaume Hoarau. Expires in 2013.

PUT ON THE TRANSFER LIST

Have you found a player you don't like or just don't have place for? Peguy Luyindula, Loris Arnaud and Zoumana Camara won't get to much of playing time. Do you want to keep them and let their contract expire, or do you put them on the transfer list?

PUT ON THE LOAN LIST

PSG has many good young players and many of them would benefit from first team fooball. Take a look in the reserves and in the academy for players to loan out.

STAFF

Nasser Al-Khelaifi will allow you to sign more staff to the club. First team coaches are needed.

Enjoy your time at PSG and don't forget to post your save report here

ALLEZ PARIS !

Wow. Let me shower you with karma and cookies. Amazing thread.

I'd not even considered PSG for a save as a) They're not Lille and b) I prefer teams without so much financial clout, but this thread has made me think about at least considering a PSG save ;)

I do like that, Pastore aside, they've gone for less showpiece signings. Tempting, very tempting...

Well you've certainly outclassed the abysmal PSG thread for FM11, nice to see they finally get one they deserve. ;)

I'll need to wait until the final game comes out before I make a decision as to whether or not I have my customary PSG save, I always like the challenge they presented beforehand with average financial means, and pushed a great deal of emphasis on their terrific youth... but, oh how it can all change over the course of one summer.

None the less, fantastic team thread. Really well done!

I am playing the demo and I am pleased with the performance from my players. We are playing the 4-3-3 / 4-5-1 formation with Kévin Gameiro as a deep-lying forward and he has scored 11 goals in 10 games. How? Let me explain.

gameiro.png

Kévin Gameiro has 17 in acceleration, 16 in pace and 17 in finishing. That makes him perfect for that role.

Fantastic OP, great job :applause:

When I get round to a PSG save, I think I'll try to build a French side (or only buy players based in France) and I won't be stupid with the money. The targets you've listed in the OP are the ones I'm likely to go for.

Once again, thank you for the friendly responses. I appreciate it! It's nice to read your comments and I'm glad you enjoyed the team guide.

I will not do another team guide for another team, but I am looking forward to do the PSG team guide for FM13.

I will be active in this thread and I hope many of you will as well.
