so ten seconds is the problem?

I know its not just that but really when you break it all down its not that bad, maybe a very slight longer load time, one tiny extra progam that takes up no resources really, you have 8GB of RAM you have ample resources to run steam and FM and various other things if you wanted too.

My point was that I will be worse off than I was before. 10 seconds may be small, but it is worse off than I was before.

If this works for SI and they make more money and improve FM, will you still be worse off because of that 10 seconds? Or would it be seen as a good move from SI at the time which has moved them forward?

On the dotted line with a computer that is up to date and can last you 5 years.

You can put away the price of a cup of coffee for the next 5 years to save up for a new computer.

yeah how about..... no!

I have a new(ish) computer, bought and built specifically so I could play FM for the next 5 years starting with FM11... sadly, because I also take extreme care over what software I choose to run and refuse point-blank to run software that I don't want to, I'll likely be playing FM11 for the next 5 years.

Completely missed you there, sorry. But the fact remains, theres some... well i'd rather not say in this topic, you know what i mean regardless :)

Why was steam not working however? Perhaps we can fix it and you can enjoy FM12 with the rest of us :)

Post #266 up above. Wouldn't function in offline mode. No-one could sort it and Steam 'resolved' the support ticket but not the actual problem.

Yes, 10 seconds is a problem because it's caused by a completely unnecessary piece of software that provides dafuge with no benefit. If the additional 10 seconds of loading time improved the game in some way I'm sure it'd be fine.
It provides you with the ability to install FM on any computer with internet connection. It gives you the ability to take advantage of Steam's great sales and whatnot. It gives you the opportunity to use the beautiful overlay to browse the internet while you are simulating. It gives you the chance to talk with friends using Steam's great social interface. It lets you track achievements and try to unlock them all. I can name more if you'd like.

If it is of benefit to Si and therefor improves the game through extra sales, would it then benefit him?

And what error exactly were you getting? Replicate it and i can help you. Otherwise i'm just going to assume your spouting stuff without actual basis, sorry, but one thing i realized while being online is that everyone tends to be full of ****

If FM is significantly improved next year thanks to the move to Steam then I'd be happy, that is yet to be proven though. Maybe in a year's time when the sales/profit figures are released and FM13 sees a significant improvement then I'll be praising the move.

From a purely personal point of view, I don't want any of those things, I just want to play FM. There is no benefit to me, however there may be to others.

Was once massively opposed to Steam, saw it as an invasion of privacy, a resource hog, a nuisance.

I now buy all my PC titles through it, have realised it's one of the lightest apps running on my PC, and come to love the frequent sales and interaction aforded by it.

Love how every year someone starts on of these thinly veiled bandwagon threads, oodles of people jump aboard and declare a boycott, while FM subsequently goes on to break previous sales records regardless.

So why not just give it a shot then, if this time next year we are all here discussing a new type of DRM then you can tells all we were wrong, but why not as fans of FM dont we give them the chance to prove this is going to work for them rather than have a go at them? Si have said they think this will work best for them, lets give them the chance to show it is. I can imagine this will make tracking bugs and things easier if we are all running off the same platform, that could be one of many benefits to us.

I notice alot of the people strongly against steam tend to be older posters, and please im not trying to be insulting at all when i say this, but it seems you guys would like things to be like they were years ago when it was all simpler, newer generation of PC gamers will not mind steam at all, infact a large portion will already use it, this is the way things are going, its just up to you if you want to keep playing PC games.

Given that we're talking 18 months - 2 years ago I can't remember an exact error code or name. Suffice to say that Steam refused point blank to stay in offline mode for more than about 20 minutes at a time. As I said, it's entirely possible that it was some kind of software conflict but I'm not prepared to risk paying money for something that I may not be able to use due to another program's issues.

I can install FM on any computer I have access to anyway? It's called a DVD. In fact, I don't even need the internet for that and I wouldn't be rinsing other people's download limits. Not interested in the sales. The only PC games I play are FM and various retro bits I've got. Occasionally Cricket Captain (which I'm pretty sure isn't on Steam anyway). I'm on the internet while playing FM right now. I can use MSN and/or Facebook to talk to my friends. Hardly any would be accessible on Steam. I have no interest in achievements because you set your own goals in FM.

Probably not though. You'll be playing FM12 before Christmas.

Your posts are outlandish in regards to installing "unwanted software". I bet there are dozens of programs on your computer that you didn't want installed.

Java, Shockwave, Flash, Adobe Air, Adobe Reader, iTunes/Quicktime, Codecs?, image software management like picassa or something simliar. What about when you install a peripheral like a scanner or a printer, and the standalone programs that come with those? What about backing up your sim card. Or using a Flash USB? Or using an External Hard Drive?

It's like talking to a wall. Steam will be neglible on your system. And you can play FM12. Why don't you get that?

I've tried Steam and decided that it had no benefits for me, I'm not just assuming that it will be bad without trying it.

There's no doubt that I'll suck it up and use Steam to play FM12, but I'm not going to pretend that I'm happy about it.

You don't need a DVD is the point I'm making. Why would you want to bring your DVD on a vacation/holiday when you can just get it online. Is British internet really that bad? I've never heard of download limits over here. All these points you make are solely you. I'm positive you'd like the software if you'd actually give it a chance. And if you don't, you don't even need to know it's there while you play FM12.

Probably not though. You'll be playing FM12 before Christmas.

Those pieces of software actually provide the user with some benefit? SI and Sega have been quite clear that the enforced use of Steam is for their benefit.

To everyone but a few of you, yes. I put just a few of the benefits in an earlier post.

Just don't blame SI when your wallet gets raped come christmas time. Steam is more than just a tool for gamers, it pleases non gamers as well, just go browse the indie section, i bet audiosurf would be right up your valley.

That's the joy of steam, Orange box for 5 quid? grid for 5 quid? Dirt 3 for free? We're talking about games who exceed the FM budget by such an amount you couldnt imagine, not some small games, and even then, you'll find some indie games that are absolutely amazing.

If you treat steam as a tool for playing FM 12 you will be disappointed, and that would be a shame. Try it out as a tool for finding new things, even the worst non-gamers will find something that suits them, it's a tool, use it accordingly.

none of your bloody business!

I want none of that, nil, zero...

I play FM on one computer, mine...

I play only one game, FM...

I'm perfectly happy using my Internet Browser to browse the Internet with, funnily enough? Weird huh? especially as I, generally, have around 50 tabs open at any one time so I think Steam's browser may struggle to accommodate me and my browsing habits...

Yeah, I love the social aspect, I have a facebook account you know? Like bloody hell I have, nor do I want it... for me, if I want to socialise, I go and do it in person, face to face, or at the very least over the phone...

Wow, great Achievements... look at me guys, I saved/reloaded myself to X,Y and Z in the Steam Achievements Woop Woop \o/ - is that really the best you've got?

thanks..., I'll pass

As i said, use steam as a tool for finding more games that bring joy to you, and take the social aspect as a bonus, don't use it as a tool for FM12 only, it'll disappoint you. And believe me, you wont regret giving some games a shot, when they come along for 69 cents(hey, TF2, one of the best games ever is free, hows about that). Give it a shot, dont be all hurf durf derp FM only or bust.

Steam's browser only struggles because of your 5 year old computer. I use my Steam account as my "Facebook" account. Are achievements the best I got? No? But they are a fun little addition to the game that many people would probably enjoy. Just because you don't want it doesn't mean most people wouldn't like the extra accessories. You are just plain ignorant.

I think that pretty much sums it up for me, and possibly the reason why I don't like it. I'm really not a gamer, I'm just someone who is still addicted to FM from my childhood. On average I probably buy two games a year, one of them being FM and the other being something on the PS3 which I never get round to playing for that long. I don't think I've bought a PC game (other than CM/FM) for around 15 years.

So now you are able to tell me what I may or may not be doing in the future, I may well be playing FM12 by Christmas... but only if I'm not forced to run software I don't want to run..

You would also lose your bet as regards unwanted programs on my computer, for example, I use an open-source PDF reader called SumatraPDF - search for it on Sourceforge. whilst you're there, you may want to pick up something like Irfanview to manage your images with... most of my software comes through the open-source community, at least I know what it's doing then..

In regards to Java, Shockwave, Flash and codecs, I allow them to run because I want them to, therefore they're not unwanted. I don't have iTunes (I don't have/want an iPod/iPhone/et al) and I havne't got Quicktime as, again, I have an alternative program. See, you *think* I don't know what I want, when I am very sure as to what I DO want... very sure! And Steam..? I don't want it...

Fair enough, i still believe that even a non-gamer could find enjoyment in some of the games, you do really have those "5 minutes at a time" games that offer endless entertainment values but each to his own.

Yes, and then some. Read the thread.

And apart from dafuge who seems to be reasonable, everyone else turned into a "LOLSTEAM" basher. Sorry, but the only person i can relate to and actually understand as to why they would not use steam at the moment is dafuge, mainly because he seems to know what he is talking about.

In the end, the majority of you will do what dafuge will do, you might not like it, but you WILL get steam. There will be a rare few that will not buy the game, but SI won't give even the slighest damn about sales going up and down by 10, when you're talking about millions, 300€ is a fairly small amount. As i've said, if you're willing not to buy FM12 due to steam keep to it, i'll be impressed and will honestly respect you, but yet, i've said this twice and nobody actually has the courage to come out completely forward and swear they wont buy the game. If you're that determined not to buy the game due to steam, say so, i'll compile a list and lets see how many people stick to it.

I've left this long enough but can't see anything different being posted in there than the other thread. Am closing this, you can continue to discuss FM activation here - http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php/274801-A-Message-On-Football-Manager-2012-Activation
