Sweeping Changes ??!!?? - (Experiment Thread)

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

This thread will be used to chronicle the exploits of 24 forum created players in an experiment using FM11.3

The conditions of the experiment are;

Each of the 24 Blue Square Bet Premier clubs have been given a 125/200 CA/PA Sweeper. The sweeper is 17 yrs old, on a brand new 5 year contract and is a local boy.

None of the 24 BSP clubs currently play a sweeper formation (in fact I do not believe any of the clubs in the English pyramid do) and I want to see how the game adapts to being injected with a pool of unbelievable talent in a 'foreign' position.

Yesterday I ran a sign-up looking for 23 people to create a Sweeper for me, with me creating the 24th.

Thread Link - http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php/265609-Sweeping-Changes-!-Sign-Up-Thread

Each player could have;

* 8 visible attributes set to 18

* 3 hidden attributes set to any number

* 1 PPM defined

* Set as left or right footed (main foot set to 20, other foot set to 10)

The constant settings used for all 24 players were,

5 yr, 1000 pw contract

D.O.B. - 14.6.1993 (making them all just turned 17 at games start)

Player Nationality - English

Player Second Nationality - None

Height - 6 foot 1 inch

Weight - 176lbs

Current Ability - 125

Potential Ability - 200

Current Reputation - 100

Home Reputation - 100

World Reputation - 75

Position settings;

* GK & Free Role set to 0

* SW set to 20

* All other outfield positions set to 1 (if set to 0 then DC would often default to 20, ruining the experiment)

Everything else was left as default

Here is a table of the settings chosen for the 24 Sweepers;

sweepersa.jpg

sweepersb.jpg

Game Set Up

9 Nations chosen (all with their lowest playable division selected)

* Playable - England

* View Only - Belgium, Germany, France, Holland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Scotland

Database size - Huge

While I finish getting the database ready to begin the experiment, I would be interested to hear anyone's predictions/thoughts for how this will play out in the short term and/or long term.

Initial questions (with many more no doubt to be generated as the experiment unwraps):

* Will the BSP managers adapt their playstyles / formations to fit in their new best player?

* Will the BSP teams force the player to play out of position?

* Worse still, will the Sweepers simply be left to rot in the youth team due to not fitting into the managers plans?

* Overtime will the Sweepers adapt to new positions and flourish?

* Will any of the Sweepers find their perfect manager match and an English team adopt a full time sweeper system?

* How long will the Sweepers stay at their BSP hometown club?

* Will any make it into the English national team?

* Will the English national team adopt a sweeper system overtime?

* Will foreign managers of English clubs be more accepting of the Sweepers than British managers?

* Will the Sweepers seek out more 'sweeper friendly' clubs abroad?

Some initial analysis of the 24 Sweepers we have being inserted into the experiment;

visibleattributedistrib.jpg

Above is a breakdown of the visible attributes assigned to our Sweepers. I do not believe there are any real surprises at the top of this list, with most of the Central Defender and Sweeper centric attributes dominating. If I was forced to pick a top attribute out it would perhaps be Marking, as in my eyes a Sweeper would be cleaning up more than marking a man, but perhaps our Sweeper creators are looking ahead more to their player converting into a central defender?

The big surprise for me is the relatively (in my own mind) low amount of times Decisions was chosen. In my own management style this is a key stat for most of my positions, as I want my players to be intelligent as well as gifted.

Near the bottom also provides a few talking points. Only one instance each for Work Rate, Teamwork, Technique and Bravery. Interesting.

The player(s) that own these stats will be interesting to keep an eye on.

hiddenattributedistribu.jpg

Above is the breakdown of the hidden attributes assigned to our Sweepers.

Four hidden attributes dominate the list, with the majority of our players looking to be highly consistent, rarely injured, extremely ambitious and very professional.

So we should be looking at a core of players who can play well all the time, looking to advance their careers but handle the nature of their advancement maturely? Time will tell.

CA comparisons

As a pre-emptive comment, the CAs (125) of our sweepers is significantly higher than those of the other players at the 24 clubs. For the division as a whole, the top 10 CAs outside of the sweepers are; 103, 85, 85, 84, 83, 83, 82, 81, 80 and 80.

This sets us up to see if the sweepers slide right into the teams given their superior quality, whether that is as a sweeper or out of position.

Or, due to their positional uniqueness they are mis-used / not used at all.

Here's how I think it will turn out:

Initial questions (with many more no doubt to be generated as the experiment unwraps):

* Will the BSP managers adapt their playstyles / formations to fit in their new best player? No :(

* Will the BSP teams force the player to play out of position? I hope so but in reality I don't reckon so.

* Worse still, will the Sweepers simply be left to rot in the youth team due to not fitting into the managers plans? This is the most probable thing to happen.

* Overtime will the Sweepers adapt to new positions and flourish? Yes, almost certainly.

* Will any of the Sweepers find their perfect manager match and an English team adopt a full time sweeper system? Good chance of this happening.

* How long will the Sweepers stay at their BSP hometown club? Most will get picked up by Premiership clubs due to their 200 PA however some will stay.

* Will any make it into the English national team? I reckon it'll be a tough fight for a spot.

* Will the English national team adopt a sweeper system overtime? No.

* Will foreign managers of English clubs be more accepting of the Sweepers than British managers? No.

* Will the Sweepers seek out more 'sweeper friendly' clubs abroad? No.

Ok, last post before we kick off.

Here is a dashboard showing main status points of each of our sweepers at the start of the experiment

dashboardstart.jpg

There are a few points that jump out looking at the dashboard that are worth noting, in case they become noteworthy as the experiment unfolds.

* Kidderminster and Luton have valuations much higher than the other 22 sweepers. A sign of the future. Luton's could perhaps be explained by his value being affected by the clubs reputation (the highest in the division), but Kidderminster are right in the middle of the division club rep wise.....

* 8 of our 24 sweepers are already part of the England u19s set up

* Many of the happiness statuses are similar, but a few stand out as interesting;

Rushden & Diamonds is "confident he will succeed at the club"

York "hopes he will learn a lot while at the club"

While Hayes & Yeading "believes he will learn a lot at the club" (using the word 'believe' and the absence of the word 'while' is interesting)

Kettering and Darlington both "want to impress his new manager"

While Eastbourne is not quite as committed and "hopes to impress his new manager"

* Gateshead might prove to be a fun watch, with his personality listed currently as Outspoken, Short Tempered & Confrontational! :)

All 24 also have a National reputation due to their splash being made joining the low level clubs!

Ok, tomorrow will see the start of the updates once the experiment has begun and dived into!

I would be interested to hear your thoughts on what you like here, do not like and would like to see in addition.

Also, very interested in your theories on what will begin happening here!! :thup:

Reason why I'm so expensive is a little tactic I picked up called "Awesomeness".

I may have used genie scout filters to create my player..... :o

I just chose the basic defending stats and some stats to make me more consistent/play better for longer/fit :D

PreSeason Update 2010 - August 6th 2010 (day before the seasons first games)

I haven't got a feel for frequency of updates etc yet, but I had an unexpected chance to play a little tonight so I thought a quick update was in order and it will perhaps be an indicator into how this first season will pan out for our sweepers and their Blue Square Premier clubs.

Injuries

July 2nd - Altrincham out for 4 weeks, returned just before season starts

July 21st - Gateshead - strained calf muscle, still out for 5-11 days on seasons eve

July 27th - Tamworth - chest injury, out for first 2 weeks of the season

July 27th - Luton - gashed head, doubtful for first weekend of the season

Players Who Have Dropped to Regional Reputation

Altrincham

Cambridge

Fleetwood

Hayes & Yeading

Kidderminster

Mansfield

Southport

Players Who Have Learnt A New PPM

Hayes & Yeading has already learnt a new PPM, 'Like To Lob Keeper'

Players Who Have Unlearnt An Old PPM

Luton has stopped arguing with officials

Played In Pre-Season Games

Hayes & Yeading - 1 sub appearance, a 9 minute cameo

Kettering - 1 sub appearance, 18 minutes

So, it is beginning to look as though our sweepers are going to be unjustly ignored, at least to begin with :(

A combined 27 minutes of pre-season football is a sad indictment of the BSP managers currently. Although, they are at least beginning to have an influence on them via PPMs and training.

Let's hope opportunities begin to arise as the season gets underway!

Initial questions (with many more no doubt to be generated as the experiment unwraps):

* Will the BSP managers adapt their playstyles / formations to fit in their new best player?

- I believe not unfortunately.

* Will the BSP teams force the player to play out of position?

- Not till they retain them as DC, at least up to 8-12/20.

* Worse still, will the Sweepers simply be left to rot in the youth team due to not fitting into the managers plans?

- This might be the case. In fact, not in youth team but more as a training dummy :(

* Overtime will the Sweepers adapt to new positions and flourish?

- Definitely. Or they will find new clubs that can match their positions and style.

* Will any of the Sweepers find their perfect manager match and an English team adopt a full time sweeper system?

- Might be. But I don't believe this will happen in near future. More like in at least 5 years time.

* How long will the Sweepers stay at their BSP hometown club?

- A few ones might leave in the first season but the initial playing time will decide this. If we are left to rot, we will be in for a long time in BSP.

* Will any make it into the English national team?

- Hopefully but I expect the ones making the NT already retained as DCs.

* Will the English national team adopt a sweeper system overtime?

- Not thinking it will. Maybe if a revolutionary manager is appointed in future.

* Will foreign managers of English clubs be more accepting of the Sweepers than British managers?

- Not sure. But they might be more open to new formations.

* Will the Sweepers seek out more 'sweeper friendly' clubs abroad?

- I believe so if they get enough playing time to get a good reputation.

Seeing the first mini update, it's a bit sad to see pre-season is a cold one for us :( R&D's is confident he'll succeed at the club but what he forgets is whether he will play or not :) A solid start to the experiment Braumiller. KUTGW :thup:

Nothing too negative for my sweeper, however the lack of game-time for everyone involved is worrying!

This looks like an interesting experiment.

I think that all the players will be retrained to DC's or FB's. Not sure i've ever seen an AI team play with a sweeper.

I imagine most will leave the BSP very quickly, whether they play or not with the high PA other clubs will buy them.

Update Teaser

We are now at November 1st 2010 and I am going to put together another dashboard to see how we are progressing. Before looking at any of the sweepers there is a rather surprising transfer update in the news screen for one of our sweepers...... Very interesting ;)

Dashboard plans as they stand;

One now (Nov 1st 2010)

One after the transfer window shuts (first week in Feb 2011)

End of season (end of May 2011)

Off to dig into the details and see if any of us got any playing minutes......

November 1st 2010 Update

Dashboard of how all the sweepers stand currently

dashboardnov1st2010.jpg

Lge = League game

Cup = Cup game

NC = Non-Competitive game

I have excluded the Description, Personality and Media Handling style this time as none of them have changed and it gives room to add 'Game Action' and 'Transfer Info'.

Our first confirmed sweeper transfer!

The timeline was;

October 17th, Lyon make a 130k offer (plus incentives) for Newport Sweeper

October 19th, Lyon make an improved offer of 325k (plus incentives) for Newport Sweeper

October 20th, Newport board intervenes and accepts offer (previous fee received record was 50k)

October 23rd, Newport Sweeper delighted to have agreed terms with such an illustrious club, transfer to go through Jan 1st 2011

We also have 4 clubs (all foreign, no English so far) sniffing around various other sweepers.

Following up on their transfer of Newport Sweeper, Lyon are also interested in 5 other sweepers

Fiorentina are interested in 5 sweepers.

Genoa are interested in 2 sweepers.

While Lazio have interest in a sweeper.

Current Abilities have started to change too, with several advancing 4-5 points to 129-130!

Sadly Altrincham regressed a point to 124 :( Surely with his potential this is just an early, temporary setback!(?)

Most sweepers, although seeing less playing time than they should, are settled and are showing as being happy to be playing for the club. There are a few standout exceptions, with Gateshead and Hayes & Yeading showing potential character flaws with 'feeling pressure by the interest show in them'.

Newport is naturally excited about his pending transfer to Lyon.

Rushden & Diamonds is embarrassed by his teams run of defeats.

While Kettering is reacting a little better to a bad run by 'striving to improve the league position'

Playing Time

We are now down to 11 of our 24 sweepers who have yet to kick a ball :(

Of the 13 who have seen action, there are 2 (Kettering & Luton) who have made sub appearances for the first team (Kettering's 2 appearance have been in the clubs last 3 games, so a potential chance to impress and get some starts may be presenting itself).

5 of our sweepers have made appearances for the England u19 team, with Rushden & Diamonds gaining a 9.4 rating in their 1 game at DC!

Quite a few sweepers are now getting reserve games for their BSP team, and in addition with the England u19 games there is at least hope that first team games are not far away.

Our next update will be after the January transfer window shuts. Looking at our early transfer interest, it may prove to be a busy period!

That one surprised me too. His AML game was sub par (around 6.7 I believe), but the 3 DM games were VERY useful. Will be interesting to see if any of the 24 adapt to non defender roles.

Ok, just worked my way through a LOT of sweeper related news items on February 2nd 2011.....

I will have all the transfer updates ready to post in a couple of minutes, but I will be heading out for the rest of the day, so the main update and dashboard will not be until later tonight or tomorrow morning.

So, January was a busy month overall for the sweepers.

In all, 11 sweepers have moved onto pastures new, while 13 remain at their BSP clubs (for now)..... All 13 of the sweepers who have not moved on, have at least some level of interest in them from at least one club.

Will the 11 that moved on benefit more from the no doubt better training and coaching they will now receive, or will any of the 13 who have not moved break into the first team and gain valuable playing experience?

Break down of where the movers went to;

Italy - 3

Germany - 2

England - 2

France - 2

Spain - 1

Holland - 1

Update - February 2nd 2011

Ok, so January was a little busy! :)

Looking at the interest being shown in the 13 sweepers still at their original clubs, it appears that the summer ahead will be very similar too.

Below is our dashboard showing how we stand right now;

dashboardfeb2nd2011.jpg

(Yorks club and int appearances section that is blank should read all 0's - I jumped the screenshot gun there it appears!)

Of the sweepers at new clubs, many have found themselves inserted into youth or feeder club situations. Hopefully this provide them a situation to start making appearances and make the strides we are all hoping for.

Two players have finally made senior debuts.

Wrexham Sweeper playing for Ajax in one game during January and notching an assist whilst at it.

Lyon giving Newport Sweeper two sub appearances, although he only averaged 5.7 in them :(

The upper limit on our sweepers CA's now is 133, held by Kettering Sweeper (no doubt helping in his move to Inter Milan) and Histon Sweeper, who has stayed put despite rumors of AC Milan being interested.

Little else changed during this period. A couple of the big transfers caused reputations to rebound from Regional to National (but not on all transfered players) and all those transfered are now looked on as Hot Prospects by their new employers.

Just highlights even further the sad way that the BSP teams have reacted to being gifted these rare gems :confused:

Next update in the summer of 2011

Love the fact I've moved to Ajax. One of my favourite teams in real life, and with great training/youth facilities. Only problem is I don't think their AI is any cleverer than at any other club - ie, I still think we're all going to be left to rot the whole of our careers.
