AI Experiment - what would happen if?

Recommended Posts

Really interesting update.

It's amazing how much more effective the MC's seem to be than the wide players.

The Geordies won the league. Any chance of a pic of the stats page or at least the squad list. It would be interesting to see who they have playing for them that they managed to snooze both Man Utd and Liverpool to the title.

Not a team I would have picked out at all.

Key questions for this season:

Will Chelsea’s drop continue? Yes.

Can Newcastle sustain success without any stars? Let me see who they have in their team and I will then decide.

Will the Bandits go up? No, beaten in the playoffs I'm afraid.

Will anyone move? Yes. 2 from Chelsea and 1 idiot B.

Will the wide men at Chelsea leave? Yes, 1 will.

Will England ever concede a goal? Yes, to someone like N.Ireland or Scotland. icon_biggrin.gif

I really hope that the bandits go after that 2M pound GK. that would be a coup. It seems that the bandits are progressing as best they can given the current financial model. The fact the 2M GK wants to go there is interesting. I hope they snag him. They are getting better guys than they had.

I think I've figured out what's going on with Idiot A. He still has the same mental attributes as he always did, and the same as Idiot B.

But Idiot A is playing in Italy, and I'm only running the English leagues in detail. I wonder if, if you don't run a league in detail, you get the same level of player interaction. I have a hunch that the only reason he appears to be behaving is that he's off in a world we don't hear about in detail.

So phase two of this experiment, when the extreme staff come in, will be run with all of Europe's top leagues running, so that idiots can't excape...

very interesting and intriguing read thanks..

Although Newcastle have none of the stars it would be nice to see their squad (Toon fan myself) I expect Newcastle and other teams to have signed players that the bandit players replaced.. Ie Chelsea players such as drogba...

That could account for their success.. Would be interesting to see where the 'big players' have gone now.

Also the player that has a rolling contract... Could he be staying there because youve had his loyalty set as 20?

So will phase two include a set of super players for each country -- i.e. extreme managers at lower league teams in each country, each team seeded with a bunch of studs? Will this saturate the world with too many super players and make the evaluation intractable?

Regardless, I wonder if nationality will have any impact on studs and idiots...

Thanks for the continued support icon_smile.gif

With regard to the next test, it will still be contained to England, so we can see the direct effect of the various extreme factors in the same country, but I will be running Europe's top leagues so that if the players and staff move abroad, their movements will be more accurately modelled.

As for Newcastle, unfortunately I'd already run a season on before the request to see their squad, but I'll include their squad in the next update, which sees them plummet. Only Martins left of any note.

FA Cup: 2nd Round

FA Trophy: 3rd Round

An absolute shocker. After being predicted to finish higher than they’d ever been predicted before, Justin Edinburgh, the Bandits manager, must’ve thought they had enough in the squad to secure that playoff spot. He made no signings in the summer, just letting a few bits of dead wood leave on frees, but it turned out to be a disaster.

On 26th February, the chairman had seen enough, and booted him out of the door with the Bandits lurking dangerously near to the relegation zone. Steve Brackstone, the assistant, was promoted to manager, but the poor result continued and the Bandits finished way down in 18th.

A couple of favourable draws against minnows helped them into round 2 of the FA Cup, but even there they were hammered 4-0 by Stafford, not exactly a giant of football themselves. It was a golden opportunity to reach the big clubs in round 3. The FA Trophy campaign also ran out quickly.

It remains to be seen what changes the new manager will make. Like his predecessor, he is described as very cautious, which may be exactly the wrong fit. Now that the chairman’s pulling the trigger, how long will he last?

Profiles of the two managers coming later.

The bad news is that he’s now been playing for two years on a rolling contract, and a paltry 1.8k a week, hasn’t been capped internationally, and stayed on the bench in the UEFA Cup final.

Notes: What a season. A stunning personal campaign both at domestic and international level, he scores at more than a goal a game for England and reaches 23 goals in 22 games. Wins a Premiership medal, but heartbreak at the last as a broken ankle rules him out of the FA Cup final, the UEFA Cup final and the European Championships.

Notes: The best player so far, and the first to top the 8.00 average, he comes a massive ten goals ahead of anyone in the Premiership, including the Chelsea players, and also comes in top player. Reaches 29 goals in 33 internationals and will probably be his country’s leading scorer by his mid-20s. Liverpool finish second. Comes second in European Striker of the Year and World Footballer of the Year.

2008-09, Fiorentina, CA 177: Apps 34, Gls 5, Asts 5, MoM 3, YC 0, RC 0, Avg 7.56

2009-10, Fiorentina, CA 184: Apps 37, Gls 6, Asts 6, MoM 2, YC 5, RC 4, Avg 7.41

2011-12, Fiorentina, CA 197: Apps 7, Gls 3, Asts 0, MoM 0, YC 0, RC 0, Avg 8.14

Notes: Bizarre. Fiorentina do not play in Europe, and as I’m not running the Italian league I can’t tell why he played so little. Played very well when he did.

Next time, I’ll run all the leagues. This season though, he did skip training and get fined.

Idiot B

2006-07, Newcastle, CA 150: Apps 46, Gls 1, Asts 7, MoM 1, YC 5, RC 3, Avg 7.30

Transfers to West Ham for 11.5m

2010-11, West Ham, CA 193: Apps 42 (2), Gls 4, Asts 5, MoM 4, YC 5, RC 0, Avg 7.20

2011-12, West Ham, CA 197: Apps 32, Gls 5, Asts 2, MoM 3, YC 6, RC 1, Avg 7.22

Notes: Started the season by skipping training, then in September indicated that he wanted to leave on a Bosman in the summer. Then skipped training again, and sulked for the rest of the season.

As yet, no-one’s come in for him, but he’s rejecting contracts out of hand, so surely his time at Upton Park is over. Now has nineteen caps and three goals.

Other stats

England again had a perfect record in internationals, winning eight out of eight in the qualifiers without conceding a goal. They’ve now not conceded a competitive goal since being knocked out of the European Championships four summers ago. They’ll be confident of putting that right this season.

Chelsea, in their new 4-4-2 formation, whipped the competition in the league, and cruised it. Champions Newcastle showed that they were a flash in the pan, coming a lowly 11th, while Man Utd struggled to 7th.

Premiership

Chelsea also won the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup, beating Sunderland (on penalties) and Real Madrid in the finals, while Leeds took the League Cup over Liverpool and Arsenal beat Milan to retain the Champions League.

Summary

After a few seasons of steady progress, it all unwound spectacularly for the Bandits. They made no signings in the summer, and had a dreadful season, falling all the way down to 18th. The manager was sacked, and replaced by his assistant, but he doesn’t look anything special, and is also built in the ultra cautious mode of his predecessor. Without having the ambition, will the Bandits ever make their move? Or the way things are going, will their move be back down?

A profile of the two managers – Justin Edinburgh, the sacked man, and his replacement, Steve Brackstone. Do you think it’s an improvement?

Justin Edinburgh

Steve Brackstone

With Jose Mourinho leaving at the start of the season for Lyon, David Moyes was appointed Chelsea manager, and immediately switched to 4-4-2. The wide men played out wide, and their solitary central midfield star partnered Michael Essien for most of the season. As a result, they went from also rans to treble winners, albeit with Europe being the UEFA Cup. Will they continue to dominate now the tactics appear right?

Man Utd went back the other way – after a season of apparent improvement, they fell back down to seventh and can’t seem to put a run together. Can they improve?

But it was even worse for Newcastle. After one season of unexpected success, they proved that it was a fluke, falling out of the top half entirely, which has to be one of the most dramatic falls ever seen from champions. For those interested in the squad, it was as follows:

Newcastle

The only loss of note from the previous season was Martins, who joined Juventus on a Bosman having scored 18 goals in the title season.

Again, no player moved, but that looks likely to change this time round, with Idiot B’s contract at Upton Park a month away from expiring. Also, Goalkeeper 1 has just one year left and is refusing to re-sign. And what of Right Mid 2? Now playing with a contract for two years, and a terrible wage, he’s still not playing much. Will his be an unfulfilled career?

Idiot A is still behaving well, although I’m beginning to suspect that’s because I’m not running the Italian league in details, rather than anything on his part. He has skipped training once, and barely played in a season where Fiorentina were not even in Europe.

Idiot B is surely about to move clubs, but who will have him? He’s been as disruptive as ever, and hasn’t yet fulfilled his playing potential.

Last season’s summer questions answered

Q: Will Chelsea’s drop continue?

A: No – David Moyes came in for Jose Mourinho, who had left for Lyon, switched to a 4-4-2, and they dominated.

Q: Can Newcastle sustain success without any stars?

A: No – they fell badly to 11th after a disastrous flop.

Q: Will the Bandits go up?

A: No, they were dreadful this season.

Q: Will anyone move?

A: For the second season running, no. Even Right Mid 2, who has been playing without a contract for two years now.

Q: Will the wide men at Chelsea leave?

A: They have no reason to now.

Q: Will England ever concede a goal?

A: Not this season, but there’s a tournament coming up.

Bandits squad

General

Stats

A largely unchanged squad, but they seem to have some talent about them.

Finance Overview

Interested Players

Finances still look excellent, and there are still players interested in joining. Question is – will the new manager spend in his first transfer window?

Top 20 in Squad (sorted by CA)

Name, Pos, Age, CA-PA

Kinch, ST, 22, 118-119 (+3)

Atkinson, GK, 21, 115-116 (+1)

Terrell, MLC, 24, 105-118 (+3)

Mills, DC, 19, 103-113 (+12)

Rowe, MR, 25, 103-110 (+3)

Liversidge, D/AM L, 22, 100-109 (+4)

Hendry, MC, 25, 96-101 (+5)

Riley, DC, 25, 95-100 (-1)

Wells, ST, 21, 95-97 (+2)

Fuller, DR, DM, 27, 88-98 (-2)

Stothard, DR, 23, 86-95 (+1)

Brown, AM RC, FC, 28, 75-90 (0)

Pejic, DC, 29, 74-99 (0)

Gulliver, AM RL, 19, 74-93 – New entry in top 20, youth from 2 seasons ago

McGrath, AM L, 30, 74-90 (-4)

Players in last season’s top 20 who have left the club:

Steele, MC, 20, 83-99

Gore, DM, 19, 77-93

On the most part, the young players are improving, so it’s a mystery as to why they are faltering so badly. Players such as Mills are flying, and with youths beginning to break into the top 20, the squad should continue to improve for some time yet. Will it? Will they bring in some excellent kids with high PA? They have a keeper with 115 PA, and 65 CA, but he’s only 16.

CA of X or above:

190 : 0, 0, 0

180 : 0, 0, 0

170 : 0, 0, 0

160 : 0, 0, 0

150 : 0, 0, 0

140 : 0, 0, 0

130 : 0, 0, 0

120 : 0, 0, 0

110 : 0, 2, 2

100 : 2, 4, 7

90 : 7, 11, 10

80 : 13, 14, 13

70 : 19, 22, 21

60 : 26, 26, 25

50 : 30, 31, 31

Improvement at the top end (100+ CA), but much the same below that. It’s time to bring in more players. Will they this summer?

My shortlist of 24 players now looks like this:

Shortlist

Key questions for this season:

Will Chelsea win the big treble?

Will the Bandits go up?

Will the Bandits go down?

Will Right Mid 2 ever leave or sign a new contract?

Where will Idiot B go?

Will England sweep the European Championships?

Just a note on running many more leagues in a higher detail.

I am running a very slow and cumbersome game which involves most of the leagues in the game. I can highly recommend it to people who have the resources or patience to run a fuller game as the competition of the game World is far richer than just running a handful of leagues. Club and International football is a richer experience with not just the top 10 European teams dominating precedings year after year.

I started in Serie C2 and intend to hop around Europe if I get success, but it took 2 seasons to make my team competitive.

My laptop finally ground to a halt after two seasons, so I've transfered it to my PC now and intend to run a less taxing game on the laptop.

I'm sure if you run the top European leagues, The players you create will also have richer careers with far more scope to club hop. Plus having a Super England team will be less likely.

Great work Kipfizh anyway.

Hey Kipfizh,

I've run a little experiment about staff, i have tried to create perfect staff but i met some difficulties from which I think you will also met them. creating perfect staff isn't just simply setting everything to 20.

I think you will need some pre-testing before you can create the staff who will come close to perfect.

Its the same thing as with players...you cant make them perfect as Kipfizh found out when making the players for his experiment. Anyway all a good manager needs is judging player ability, judging player potential, tactical knowledge and man management. A manager also requires good hidden attributes such as buying players and things like that. A manager dosnt really need a lot of attributes to be high such as physiotherapy and the coaching skills and also the hidden attributes that relate to being a chairman. So it is possible to make a manager that is perfect at managing. He would just have 20s in the skills important for a manager. It should be easy to figure out which of the attributes that are hidden in game are important for managing. I havnt really had a look at them since I have never edited staff but there are some like buying players.

Yes, you are partially right, but there are some attributes, like hardness of training, and all tactics attributes that are hard to make perfect. I've tried to make a perfect player and that's more simple i think then perfect staff. But maybe my own unabilitie must be blamed for that.

I'll give full details of staff as I get them, it's not necessarily making 'perfect' staff, more making extreme staff.

I have to laugh though, it seems some things never changes - after conceding their first competitive goal for four years in a 1-1 group stage draw with France, England reaches the dreaded quarter finals where they so often go out, usually on penalties.

Their opponents? Germany. I bet you can guess the rest....

After outshooting the Germans 26-2, with 14-0 in the 'on target' column, it finished 0-0. And even these stars can't beat the Germans from the spot.

When Buffon was injured in my Juventus challenge, i had to pick Bellardi, who is at loan from Reggina. Although his atrributes are far worse than Buffon, he got better averages (7.67) than Buffon (7.14). So i don't think the attributes are the most important factor that determines the averages.

I've seen some of the weirdest things happen in FM, with players who look as if they couldn't score with an empty goal given their stats ended up league goalscoarers and same applies to goalies what their performances are concerned. Anyway I often havte the feeling that goalie marks are screwed up.

If you don't concede a goal, to my mind you deserve a 7. If you make 3 decent saves your worth an 8. If you do 5 big saves your worth a nine. If you do over 8, I'd start expecting 10s. Most other things a goalie does are irreleveant as long as he doesn't concede. I wouldn't mind so much if some marks weren't absolutely weird and out of context - more like silly exceptions to these harsh goalie standards.

Great thread.

A few thoughts from me...

I've often been of the opinion that reputation was a bit screwed up on FM and I suppose this confirms it. IMO clubs (and players) should have a short term and long term reputation.

So for example, the historically big clubs (Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juve, Bayern, etc) all have good long-term reputations based on the trophies won domestically and continentally and financial power.

However, there are also clubs that have a good short-term reputation based on rhe same criteria. So Chelsea, for example, haven't historically been known as a big club in Europe. But because of their financial strength, they have gained a good short-term reputation which they have been able to use to attract the likes of Ballack and Shevchenko. They have seen that they are a club on the rise because of their short term reputation and it's been an attractive proposition for them.

The same should be true of the Bandits. It isn't! And this shows how reputation in FM is flawed in FM. I expect the Bandits to be able to attract better players more slowly, over, say, a 10-year period, but that really shouldn't be the case.

Apart from that I think the experiment is as expected with regards to the players:

- The cream rises to the top

- If played in their natural positions they will do well

- Their CA rises over time and as they play more games

It would be interesting, as said before, to see how the Bandits do with a better manager/coaches/scouts.

Firstly, sorry it took so long between updates, work has gone mad.

To answer a few questions, the keepers were designed with all 20s, but this was adjusted by the game so they have mostly 16s and 17s.

The reputation problem seems to be the conclusion from this experiment so far, but on to the next season....

A much improved season from the same bunch of players suggests that perhaps the new manager will help the club more than his predecessor. For the first time the Bandits sneaked into the playoffs, although for the first half of the season they were sitting even higher. A 5-0 aggregate defeat to Morecambe in the semi finals put paid to any promotion hopes, but it was their highest position to date.

Their combined cup run was also the best in years, with good progress made in both competitions.

No signings were made, other than a few youth promotions, but with stability achieved, will the new manager now push on?

Notes: The man is restless. Really restless. He insisted three times in the season that he wanted out, he’s not happy in Italy anymore, certainly not at Fiorentina.

The man also holds a grudge. Who against? His former managers, current manager? No, he holds a grudge against……..me. Yes, the manager who hasn’t had a job in seven years, but has had him on my shortlist all that time. He dislikes me.

Whatever, is all I can say to that!

Has 24 caps and two goals, and this year made some European progress, with Fiorentina reaching the UEFA Cup quarter finals.

Released by West Ham, joins Fulham on a free

2012-13, Fulham, CA 197: Apps 28, Gls 3, Asts 7, MoM 4, YC 5, RC 0, Avg 7.57

Notes: Started the season poorly at West Ham after his contract had expired. Strangely, after saying he wanted to leave fifty million times, he hung around once it had expired, only to contribute precisely nothing. Finally West Ham got tired of him, and released him on a free. On a small note, a bug in the game said that at this point he’d never made a start for them, when in fact he’d made loads.

Joined Fulham shortly afterwards and excelled there, as the Londoners finished a superb third in the league. Hasn’t complained a bit yet, and now has 24 caps and three goals.

Other stats

England disappointed in the Euros, losing in the quarter finals, on penalties, to Germany. Since then they have however restarted their perfect qualifying campaigns, with four wins and no goals conceded.

A late collapse by Liverpool handed Chelsea the title, while the underachievers where without doubt Man Utd, who only just escaped relegation at the death.

Premiership

Chelsea, in their dominant fashion, took the League Cup and the Champions League, which means they’ve won six trophies in two seasons. Blackburn beat Aston Villa in the FA Cup final, while Real Madrid finally ended Wigan’s run in the UEFA Cup final.

Summary

This season, the Bandits finally made the coveted playoffs, but got hammered in the semi finals. They still aren’t signing anyone and it’s definitely not helping. But can they continue this improvement and finally become a league club after so many years knocking on the door?

The story of the Premiership was undoubtedly Man Utd. Two years ago we were talking about Chelsea, and how they were failing in their 3-5-2. With Man Utd, the story is very different – their stars are playing very well, yet they fell horribly into the relegation zone, only escaping in the final week. Will this be a wake up call for them, or will their slide see them as the first big name to fall to the Championship? They didn’t even seem to lose important players – it’s a mystery.

Chelsea again dominated, and David Moyes in making the most out of the players he has. Can they have the perfect season?

Striker 4 is amazing, yet he comes second in everything – will he win anything?

Is Fabregas really worth 29m and Right Mid 2? I think Arsenal did well there.

So Idiot A dislikes me. Why? In any case, he still wants to leave Fiorentina, while Idiot B, having secured his move, has started behaving again. What will happen next?

Final note – Justin Edinburgh, the failed ex-Bandits manager, is now the manager of Gillingham. They came 17th in League Two.

Still a good squad, but no change from last year, they need to boost it.

Henry, DM, 19, 79-87 – New entry in top 20, youth from 3 seasons ago

McGrath, AM L, 30, 74-90 (-4)

Well, I spoke last season about their bright young keeper, and he’s now 10th on the list having improved massively. And they now have an even brighter prospect in Jewell, with a PA of 134.

But last season the top 20 went down to an AI of 74, this season it’s dropped to 70. The top few are getting better, but I’m not convinced the squad is better as a whole.

CA of X or above:

60 : 26, 26, 25, 23

50 : 30, 31, 31, 26

For the second season running, the top end improves slightly, but overall, it looks a weaker squad. But the new manager took them to 5th, so what can he do next?

My shortlist of 24 players now looks like this:

65 actually, and yes, that is somewhat surprising - only 22 points from top to bottom!

Interesting point - the Bandits board are now expecting to challenge for the Conference, so their ambition seems to have raised.

And the next season in the Bandits life is an interesting one icon_wink.gif
