ST Philipp Prosenik
ST Diego Forlan

ONES TO WATCH:

Diego Forlan - ST - The Uruguayan joins Chelsea off the back of an incredibly impressive World Cup. New manager Roberto Martinez's faith in the golden-locked dreamboat was highlighted as he let Didier Drogba leave, albeit for a mighty £26m plus Leon Osman.

Gael Kakuta - AMRLC - With many of Chelsea's attacking midfielders leaving, the young French star will get much more playing time this season. Blues fans will hope he can step up to the plate.

John Heitinga - DRC - The versatile Dutchman has to fill the boots of both Alex and Ricardo Carvalho, with the Blues looking unusually short at centre-back. It's important for him to hit the ground running.

SEASON TARGET:

Champions League football has been a staple at Stamford Bridge for the last few seasons, and the new squad will hope they can keep up that proud tradition. Chairman Snake Exceed has left Roberto Martinez in a very strong position to strengthen the squad in January if required, with a huge £114m balance, so if things aren't up to scratch by then, expect to see big moves in the transfer market.

Fulham will be looking for a top-half finish with a eye on the euro places. A strong squad is already set but Mark Hughes will have the funds and backing the Chairman has said in recent times to reach the goals set.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Season Preview

With new chairman and manager Alex McLeish at helm, Wolves are looking ahead for a good season. The new rules allowed the team to gain eight new players while losing 5. European Draft saw the likes of Maicon, Aaron Hunt and Alou Diarra arrive, however the first two were later transfered out in player exchanges. Premier League Draft brought in Cristian Poulsen, Matt Etherington, Dvid Elm, Steve Gohouri and Lee Chung-Yong. The 1st class drafted Chung-Yong stayed in the club with Gohouri whereas the other three were traded away. The players to leave according to the Premier League Draft were Karl Henry, Sylvain Ebanks-Blake, Stephen Hunt, Stephen Ward and Ronald Zubar none of which were bought back. The new squad seems better compared to what the fans were watching last year in Molineux. Here's how the new Wolves look like:

Name Position Name Position

Marcus Hahnemann GK Alou Diarra DM/M C
Carl Ikeme GK David Jones M C
Wayne Hennessey GK Aaron Ramsey M C
Mark Davies M/AM C
Jody Craddock D C Jonas M/AM RL
Christoph Berra D C Geoffrey Mujangi Bia M/AM RLC (Loan)
Steven Mouyokolo D C Lee Chung-Yong M/AM R
Steve Gohouri D C Jean Beausejour M/AM L - ST
Dedryck Boyata D C
Carlos Salcido D LC Steven Fletcher ST
Adlene Guedioura D/DM/M C Marcus Bent ST (Loan)
Michael Mancienne D RC - DM/M C (Loan) Benjani ST
Kevin Foley D/WB/M R Shola Ameobi ST
Paulo Ferreira D RL Ivan Klasnic ST
Fabio D/WB RL

Loan: Player is on loan at Wolves.

As we can see, there are some stand out names, especially in the form of young prospects. Carlos Salcido and Paulo Ferreira will be the experience that is needed in the back line where as Alou Diarra will be the fighting force of a creative and young midfield consisting of Lee Chung-Yong, Mark Davies and Aaron Ramsey. Also the acquisition of Jean Beausejour and Jonas will provide the width needed in the squad. The strike team has been completely changed apart from Steven Fletcher and Marcus Bent who is on loan at Wolves. The exhange of Doyle for Ameobi also created the finances to bring in Klasnic, coupled with another experienced striker Benjani, we can see some good diplays from the front row of Wolves.

The team is aiming to settle in EPL and move up every season, steady and slow. Young players in the squad are surely a part of the long term plan and we'll see whether Alex McLeish will be able to create a good harmony in this experienced and young team.

SUNDERLAND A.F.C.

Season Preview

722.png

CHAIRMAN: Ben Arsenal

A new chairman at Sunderland and the Stadium of Light as Ben Arsenal arrives hoping to move Sunderland into the top half of the Premier League and to challenge for a place in Europe. The Black Cats have opted to keep Steve Bruce at the club and he will continue to manage them as they seek to make the desired progress that would satisfy the 40,000+ fanatical fans that show up every week on Wearside to support their team.

Sunderland lost Lee Cattermole, Kieran Richardson, Frazier Campbell, Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney to the Premier League draft, but got Richardson back from Fulham later in a 2 million pound deal.

Of the five players Sunderland got in return, only injury-prone England defender Ledley King was retained. Brazilian midfielder Anderson was the first to go, in a big money deal to Blackpool. The 22 million pound fee was the fourth biggest of the transfer window, and the largest involving a one-way transfer. Defender Alex Baptiste was dispatched to Newcastle on a free, and subsequently returned to his original club Blackpool, to join Anderson. Stephen Hunt and Chris Kirkland were late movers in the transfer window, with winger Hunt snapped up by Manchester United for 4 million pounds, and Kirkland involved in a massive deal with rivals Newcastle that saw Steve Harper, Chiek Tiote and Wayne Routledge move across the North East.

Of the foreign players the Black Cats acquired from the Premier League, French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac look the most exciting. Italian 'keeper Christian Abbiati was soon dispatched to Arsenal in an exchange deal that brought midfielder Denilson to the North East, and former Atletico Madrid defender Felipe look set to replace McCartney's place at left back

Aside from that, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce was also very active in the transfer market, with the blessings of his new chairman. The wily Geordie managed to snare defender Paul Scharner and winger Matt Etherington from West Ham and Wolves respectively early on, for a total of 7 million pounds combined. Arsenal midfielder Denilson also arrived in the aforementioned deal that sent Abbiati to The Emirates.

Later on, Bruce let go of Belgian keeper Simon Mignolet for 5 million pounds to Fulham and veteran Swiss Pascal Zuberbuhler arrived in his place. Zuberbuhler's stay on Wearside didn't last long however, as he was soon sent up the road to Newcastle in exchange for former Blackpool defender Stephen Crainey, and 2 million pounds. Tomasz Kuzsczak was also brought in from Manchester United for 3 million pounds to provide competition for Craig Gordon.

Richardson returned from Fulham, and Sunderland managed to strike a late blockbuster deal that saw the Black Cats fork out 7 million pounds and send Chris Kirkland to Newcastle in exchange for Steve Harper, Chiek Tiote and Wayne Routledge. Late attempts to flog off Andy Reid and David Healy were unsuccessful as the transfer window closed.

The new Sunderland squad therefore looks like this:

GK Craig Gordon
GK Tomasz Kuzsczak
GK Steve Harper
GK Trevor Carson

DR Phil Bardsley
DRC Nedum Onouha (on loan)
DRC Marcos Angeleri
DL Stephen Crainey
DL Felipe
DC Michael Turner
DC Paulo da Silva
DC Ledley King
DC Titus Bramble
DC John Mensah (on loan)

DL/AMLC Kieran Richardson
DC/DM Paul Scharner
DM Denilson
DM Christian Riveros
DM Chiek Tiote
MC Jack Colback
MRC Jordan Henderson
MLC Andy Reid
AMR Ahmed Elmohammady (on loan)
AML Matthew Etherington
AML Bolo Zenden
AMRL Wayne Routledge
AMRLC Steed Malbranque

ST Asamoah Gyan
ST Darren Bent
ST Andre-Pierre Gignac
ST Danny Welbeck (on loan)
ST David Healy

Sunderland's squad looks releatively unchanged, with the only major loss being midfield biter Lee Cattermole. Bruce would hope that either Denilson or Tiote is capable of filling Cattermole's boots.

ONES TO WATCH:

It says a lot that the three best players in the Sunderland team are all strikers, with Asamoah Gyan, Darren Bent and Andre-Pierre Gignac all capable goalscorers. This underlines the chairman's intentions, and he expects Bruce and his Sunderland team to plunder more than a few goals in the league as they becoming an formidable and potent attacking force.

SEASON TARGETS:

Sunderland have a decent squad, with strong attacking intentions. A top half finish is not an unreasonable expectation, and with a bit of luck European football can be achieved on Wearside next season.

BIRMINGHAM CITY F.C.

CHAIRMAN: Ken Company

Company was recently appointed to the post of Chairman at Birmingham City, and here he had a chat with Sports.tv about the upcoming season.

Sports.tv: Mr Company, thanks for taking the time to speak to us. What sort of changes have you made since taking over here at St Andrew's?

Ken Company: The first thing was to appoint a well-known and successful manager who can help us build a new era for the loyal Blues' fans, and I believe we have done that by appointing Rafa Benitez, whose tactical ability should ensure that we compete with teams that may look technically better on paper. We then had to release five players and rely on a little bit of luck in the draft, and although it wasn't brilliant for us, we have picked up a couple of good players, in particular Gourcuff and Mertesacker who will provide a great spine to the team.

Stv: What sort of expectations do you have of your team this season?

KC: It's going to be a real challenge this season, all 20 Premier teams are looking in good shape so I have to say our first aim is to get 40 points on the board and avoid relegation, then we can set a new aim once that is achieved.

Stv: Do you think the fans will see this as a little pessimistic?

KC: Not at all, 40 points is a short-term goal which I hope we can achieve by Christmas, and then we can power on and win the League!

Stv: So which of your players do you think will be key to your chances this season?

KC: Well I think we are looking very strong at the back, with Ben Foster we have a top international stopper, and he is well protected by Dann and Johnson, but of course we have added Mertesacker who is a top defender with plenty of experience at the highest level. In midfleid we have some good combative players, but now we have a touch of class with Gourcuff, who can win matches by himself. Up front we have the tallest man in the league in Zigic, who will cause all sorts of problems for opposition defences, and we decided to re-sign Cameron Jerome after he was released and also managed to pick up Nikola Kalinic who will provide us with a few different options.

Stv: Any hot young talents waiting to burst through from the youth ranks?

KC: We have a number of talented young players, including Jack Butland who I see as a future England 'keeper.

Stv: Thanks for your time Ken and good luck for the season ahead, back to the studio.

ARSENAL F.C.

CHAIRMAN: Joe Referee

Arsenal have been near the top of the Premier League for a long time and have consistently qualified for the Champions League in the last decade but they haven't won a trophy since the FA Cup in 2005, but Joe Referee will be hoping the team can relive the form of the 'Invincibles' and return to glory. SPORTS.tv caught up with Joe to find out his plans for the season.

So Joe what are your hopes for the upcoming season?

Well I hope we can win the quadruple but realistically a top 4 finish and an FA or League Cup victory will be a successful season for us. I reckon this side is capable of winning a trophy this season and be European Champions in the next few seasons.

You re-appointed Arsene Wenger for Arsenal, can he do the job for you?

Well Wenger has been around for a long time now at Arsenal and he has been fairly successful but it has been a while since we have won a trophy and if he doesn't win one soon he won't last long. I have full confidence in him though and the squad I have assembled will be good enough to reach my targets.

You mention your squad, are you happy with them? And will you allow Wenger to bring in some of his own players?

I am delighted with the squad at the moment, perhaps some more backup is needed in some areas but I will allow Arsene to decide if thats the case. He has some money to spend wherever he feels it is needed and I will support him in the transfer market.

Finally who are the players to watch?

I think our midfield is very strong. Fabregas, Nasri and Toulalan I think are the players to look out for for us this season. They all hae the talent to score goals from nothing. I hope they go on Strictly when they retire, they move their feet so quick, I'd vote for them!

Bolton Wanderers season Preview

With New Chairman Al Moldo at the helm in the board room there have been a few changes at the club. Fan's can now look forward to Veteran manager Joe Royle who has managed Oldham Athletic (2 spells), Everton, Manchester City and Ipswich Town, sitting in the dugout. The fans will be hoping that Royle will be able to carry on with the good work that Owen Coyle managed when he took over from 'boring' Gary Megson at the Reebok stadium.

Royle hasn't been very active in the transfer market after the Premier League draft which saw Bolton lose Lee Chung Yong, Matty Taylor, Zat Knight, Sean Davis and Sam Ricketts. However Taylor was back at the club straight away having been drafted back with the club. The stand out player recieved in the draft was Midfielder James Milner while Defenders Carlos Cuellar and Manuel Da Costa and goalkeeper Colin Doyle were also drafted to the club.

With the european draft Bolton got three players who can help them be a better team than they were last season with the Young Brazillian defender Marcelo, young striker Ola Toivonen both previously with PSV Eindhoven and Veteran defender Nicolas Burdisso also bolstering the defence coming in from AS Roma.

The only transfer in for Royle has been the addition of the young Dutch 'keeper Tim Krul from Newcastle for four Million pounds while Ivan Klasnic and Mark Davies left the club for three million pounds each.

So without further ado here is the Bolton Squad:

Jussi Jaaskelainen - GK
Rob Lainton - GK
Colin Doyle - GK
Tim Krul - GK

Gretar Steinsson - D/WB R
Andy O'Brien - DC
Gary Cahill - DC
Paul Robinson - DL
Manuel Da Costa - D LC
Carlos Cuellar - D RC
Marcelo - DC
Nicolas Burdisso - DC

Mustapha Riga - M/AM R
Stuart Holden - M/AM RLC
Ricardo Gardner - M/AM LC
Matty Taylor - WB/M L
Martin Petrov - AM L
Fabrice Muamba - DM/M C
James Milner - M/AM RLC

Kevin Davies - AMR/ST
Robbie Blake - AML/ST
Johan Elmander - ST
Rodrigo - ST - On Loan
Ola Toivonen - AMC/ST

Players to Watch

Nicolas Burdisso - The veteran argentine defender can really cause opposition striker problems all day long and will hope to continue that at his new club.

James Milner - This English midfielder didn't have the best world cup but he has bags of class and should be able to translate that to Bolton.

Ola Toivonen - Not much is known in England about this Swedish Striker however he can score goals and play in midfield if needed.

Season Target

The target this year has to be a mid table finish once again maybe finishing in the top 10 this time around.

Blackpool F.C. "Mon the Tangarines"

File:Blackpool_fc_logo.png

CHAIRMAN: Tyler Burrowes

Players To Watch

Mario Balotelli- A big-money aquisition from Manchester City will have huge expectations during his time at Bloomfield Road. Mario has been called "The greatest player in the world" by a number of pundits and needs to live up to that tag if Blackpool are to have any chance of doing well this season. Blackpool have been criticised by a number of people for paying to much for a "selfish player" with a "poor work ethic" but manager Carlo Ancelotti believes that Balotelli will win games on his own.

Mauro Zarate- The former Birmingham striker does not have the best memories of his previous time in the Premier League. However, he has gone a long way to repairing a poor reputation following a fantastic season at Italian club Lazio establishing himself as one of the best attacking-midfielders in the world. Hopefully a change in mentality and playing slightly deeper will see Zarate cause plenty of headaches this season.

Anderson- Former Manchester United midfielder Anderson has made his way to Bloomfield Road at the cost of 22m. Many have criticised the eccentric fee for a "Fergy Flop" however Carlo Ancelotti believes that he will become a vital part of the side. His brilliant physical skills have seen him compared to Frenchman Patrick Viera and Ancelotti will be hoping that Anderson along with Alou Diabi can "boss the midfield" in his highly attractive game-plan.

Season Target

After a very difficult beginning, Ancelotti and Burrowes are both pleased with the squad that they have assembled. It will be very difficult to give an accurate prediction given the wholesale changes the Premier League has undergone, however avoiding relegation will be seen as a fantastic achievment for the squad as they aim to establish themselves within the Premier League.

SPURS: Press Statement:

"What to Expect:

Attacking football, brilliant management from Hiddink and Bale Brilliance

Players to Watch:

Bale: The welsh wizard can destroy teams with his endless running ability.

Van Der Vaart: A dutch luxury who has the talent to dominate the league however can he fulfil this talent?

Cardozo: The international superstar is surely the man to take advantage of Tottenham's brilliant wingers with his heading ability

Season Target: A top 6 finish should be the target. And a good runs in the cups and Europe."

So a short statement from the Tottenham camp, they clearly want to let their football do the talking.

Welcome to Wembley Stadium!

SidSmash.png

SPORTS.tv kicks off a fantastic season of football for you today with the traditional season opener. After Chelsea did the double last season, the FA Cup winners place in today’s game at Wembley was taken by the Premier League runners-up from last season, Manchester United, with both sides looking to take an early psychological advantage as they strive to win this year’s Premier League crown.

However, it’s not going to be such a straightforward choice between United and Chelsea this season. The new Premier League shake up means that both have been weakened over the summer with the loss of several players from their first team squad whilst the other teams have been bolstered with new stars from home and abroad. United and Chelsea could come under extra pressure from some of the chasing pack this season and may even be surprised by some of the less fancied teams too.

However, that has no bearing on today’s game. Today is about hot weather, Wembley Stadium and the first silverware of the season. Let’s head down to Hazel for the team news.

CHELSEA

The champions name a few surprises in their starting line up and are missing their influential captain, John Terry, who didn’t travel with the squad. With Ashley Cole out injured, Roberto Martinez springs two surprises to cover the England internationals. Florent Malouda starts at left back whilst youngster Jeffrey Bruma partners new signing John Heitinga in the middle of the defence. Diego Forlan starts up front and new signings Karl Henry and Nenad Milijas will start with Michael Essien in the centre of the pitch.

FIRST HALF

20 mins:

Evra with the throw on the left for United. Finds Macheda, he lays it back to Nani, corner of the box. He shoots hard but Cech isn’t troubled by that. Goal kick.

21 mins:

Valencia dispossesses Malouda and plays a one-two with Berbatov to get away on the right. His deep cross finds Nani on the half volley, hits the bar and cleared to safety by Malouda.

26 mins:

United find Valencia on the right again and he beats Malouda down the wing. His cross is low and hard towards the near post where he finds BERBATOV who slides the ball home! United lead thanks to the Bulgarian!

Chelsea 0-1 Manchester United

(Berbatov)

30 mins:

A Nani corner is cleared by Chelsea and a great flick from Forlan sets Benayoun away on the right. O’Shea can’t stop the Israeli who sends a low cross into the six yard box where Forlan makes contact on the full stretch. Good save by Casillas to gather it in.

36 mins:

Gibson with the United corner from the left towards the near post. Flick header from VALENCIA and it’s 2-0 to United! Terrible marking from the Blues and Valencia nods past Cech to double the lead.

Chelsea 0-2 Manchester United

(Valencia)

40 mins:

Short corner from Benayoun to Milijas on the corner of the box. He slides the ball into Malouda who is in acres of space. He shoots, saved by Casillas down low, Ramires must score ... hits the bar with the goal gaping! It wouldn’t have counted, Ramires was offside but a terrible miss.

42 mins:

Good work between Macheda and Evra down the left for United, Macheda slides it back towards Paul Scholes who strikes it low and hard. Cech dives to his left and tips the ball around the post, good save from the Czech keeper to keep the score down.

A minute injury time is played and the half time whistle goes. A great half for Manchester United who lead the champions, Chelsea, 2-0 at half time here at Wembley.

HALF TIME

Chelsea 0-2 Manchester United

(Berbatov, Valencia)

Chelsea have had the majority of the possession and play but it is United who have had the majority of the chances. Antonio Valencia has terrorised Florent Malouda and Blues’ boss Roberto Martinez has to be thinking of changing things a little. Chelsea will need to be more creative if they are to get anything from this game in the second half.

SECOND HALF

HALF TIME

Chelsea 0-2 Manchester United

(Berbatov, Valencia)

53 mins:

United win the ball back after a loose pass from Michael Essien and build slowly from the back. Good possession football and it ends with Darron Gibson having a speculative effort from outside the box that Cech saves easily.

54 mins:

Great defence splitting ball from Diego Forlan, Ramires away on the right. Chance to shoot, Ramires lofts it over to the far post where it is met by Benayoun! Another good save from Casillas to prevent the Israeli’s prodded effort hitting the net.

55 mins:

Glorious ball from Essien finds Benayoun out on the left. He controls it and slides it into Forlan, edge of the area, back to goal. He takes a touch, turns and hits a snap shot inches wide of Casillas’ goal. Great effort.

62 mins:

Benayoun on the left, found by Malouda. He cuts inside and drifts a cross over ... inches away from the outstretched foot of Forlan and the ball dribbles into the arms of Casillas. He bowls the ball out to Evra and forward come United. Knight spreads a great ball out to Valencia down the right who crosses well again towards Berbatov. A bit of a melee in the box, it runs loose ... GIBSON smashes it home! United are home and dried now surely!

Chelsea 0-3 Manchester United

(Gibson)

66 mins:

Valencia again wins the ball and strides away from Florent Malouda. Another cross to the far post and Nani ... poor finish from Nani as he hits the legs of Cech, it should be 4-0!

70 mins:

Good play down the left by Forlan and Malouda, Essien in the centre. He frees Leon Osman, the sub, edge of the area, great chance ... pushed aside by Casillas. Chelsea can’t find a way past the Spanish keeper here today!

74 mins:

Bruma and Milijas break up a United attack and the champions can break with Essien. He finds Osman who slices the defence open and finds Forlan. In on goal, Forlan hits it ... pushed away by Casillas for another Chelsea corner.

75 mins:

Long ball by Casillas, headed back by Essien ... Forlan is through on goal but Casillas gets there first and clears to O’Shea. His ball forward sets Valencia away again and he dribbles past Malouda. Shoots from the angle, side netting – that would have been a special goal. In fact, Petr Cech got a touch and made the save to deny Valencia. Corner for United.

The game drifts towards it’s conclusion with the result not in doubt. One minute of injury time is played and the referee blows the whistle. Manchester United win the 2010 Community Shield!

FULL TIME:

Chelsea 0-3 Manchester United

(Berbatov, Valencia, Gibson)

MAN OF THE MATCH: Darron Gibson (Manchester United)

A close run thing between Iker Casillas, Antonio Valencia and Darron Gibson but it is the young midfielder who presses his claim for a starting place this season with an excellent midfield performance capped with a goal.

SidSmash.png

A really poor performance from Chelsea’s inexperienced side that won’t fill new manager Roberto Martinez or new chairman Snake Exceed with much confidence ahead of the season. United were scintillating on the break and took their goals excellently with Iker Casillas keeping firm at the back to ensure a comfortable win. On this performance, there is no way that Chelsea can stop Manchester United winning the Premier League this season.

HazelHarrison.png

I’m here with the man of the match, United midfielder Darron Gibson. Well played, Darron, a good win before the season officially starts next season?

DG: Yeah, we were very good today and we took our chances well. If we keep playing like that, we’ll be a match for any team in the division.

You got the man of the match award, Darron, pleased with your performance?

DG: You can always improve but yeah, it was a decent day for me. I got a goal and I always felt like I was passing the ball well. Hopefully, I can carry it on and force myself into the team for the game at Wigan next weekend.

Well, here is the champagne. You might be interested to know that I love a bit of the old fizz, Darron ...

DG: Thanks, Hazel. I’ll make sure that you get some later.

Oooh, I hope you do. Thanks, Darron, back to you in the studio, Sid.

Stoke-City-icon.png

Stoke City Football Club is a football club based in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. Founded in 1863, Stoke are the oldest club in the Premier League, and are considered to be the second oldest professional football club in the world, after Notts County.

Goalkeepers - Asmir Begovic, Thomas Sorensen, Carlo Nash.

Defenders - Gianni Zuiverloon, Ryan Shotton, Andy Wilkinson, Danny Collins, Robert Huth, Abdoulaye Faye, Ryan Shawcross, Jose Enrique, Danny Higginbotham.

Midfielders - Salif Diao, Rory Delap, Glenn Whelan, Craig Gardener, Lucho Gonazalez, Amine Linganzi, Jermaine Pennant, Emanuel Eboue, Zoltan Gera, Arjen Robben, Martin Olsson.

Strikers - Kenwyne Jones, Luis Fabiano, Nicklas Bendtner, Mamady Sidibe, Eidur Gudjohnsen, Ricardo Fuller, Ishmael Miller.

Still fairly new to Premier League football, Stoke City have quickly become very tough opposition for anybody, particularly at the fortress that is the Britannia Stadium. Following the draft one can only feel the squad has improved in almost every area, Kenwyne Jones who was formerly clearly first choice now has competition from proven goalscorer Luis Fabiano and Nicklas Bendtner. In the midfield Arjen Robben is the standout acquisition as on his day the Dutchman is one of the best wingers in the World. Craig Gardener and Lucho Gonzalez also come in and should help to provide some flair in the centre of the park while Zoltan Gera provides both versatility and a goal threat. At the back Gianni Zuiverloon and Jose Enrique come in to improve what is already a capable backline which should provide a solid base for Stoke to build their season upon.

As for their expectations this season, with the shake up anything is possible, so just staying in the Premier League should be the goal of every club in the coming season and anything more will be a bonus for Stoke

Loving the layout there, slightly regretting not paying a little more for a better manager if that's the kind of ridiculous line-up Roberto Martinez is going to play on a regular basis

What were our injuries like? Did he just play a weakened team for the hell of it?

All 3 are young talented players who can hopefully contribute a lot to the upcoming season for Blackburn, if anyone can you'd expect Mourinho to be the most likely to get the best out of these 3 players.

Season Expectations

With Mourinho in charge, Blackburn will be hoping to finish top 10, possibly pushing into Europa, but things might not start well for Mourinho. Hopefully some silverware will be coming to Ewood Park too.

Well with the season fast approaching many fans are expecting a resurgent West Ham team to cause issues for some of the more favoured clubs. With new Chairman (Cookie15) orchestrating things behind the scenes there is a certain buzz emanating from the supporters that things are set for a change. The new Chairman astounded many with a sizable financial outlay on their new manager, one certain Josep Guardiola, who has managed to cause quite a furore at the Nou Camp. When interviewed on his new acquisition Cookie15 responded, "If you want success you need to invest, and where better to start than a manager who knows what it takes to succeed."

Not only has Cookie15 bought in a new manager he has overseen a real overhaul of the playing squad.

Players leaving Upton Park are: Valon Behrami, Jordan Spence, Paul Scharner, Pablo Barrera, Thomas Hitzelsperger, Winston Reid, Manuel Da Costa, Zavon Hines and, somewhat surprisingly, Matthew Upson. This will have raised a few eyebrows amongst the expectant fans, that is until they heard the recruits:

GK - Julio Cesar

DC - Alex

DC - Sebastian Bassong

DC - Giorgio Chiellini

AML - Juan Manuel Mata

AMR - Jesus Navas

ST - Xisco

ST - Carlos Vela

ST - Robin van Perise

So that makes 9 in and 9 out, but with a hefty Transfer kitty expect to see Guardiola use his Spanish connections to strengthen the squad when he sees fit.

What to expect from the Hammers this season?

With the quality in goal and at the back, expect to see the Hammers keeping things tight at the back. That coupled with the undoubted width, pace and flair provided by Navas and Mata, the new strikeforce of van Persie and Cole could be posing a few defences a few problems

Aims - Top half finish and an outside bet for European qualification!

Short interview with chairman Nos Ikee:

Journalist: You've had quite a busy time in the transfer window. Can you explain how it went for you and what was your reasoning?

Nos: I am very happy with the deals we've made. Basically we've kept all of our drafted stars, and made quite a few bargains, filling the squad with class players that are used to playing at the very highest level. Some of them are on the downwards phase of their careers but we've got promising replacements lining up for later already, such as Graham Dorrans, Phil Jones and Daniel Sturridge.

Journalist: It does seem strong on paper. Fancying a good season in the Premiership? What are your ambitions?

Nos: Well obviously we are planning to do quite a little bit more than what the West Brom fans have become used to seeing. It is a very ambitious squad, and given the money we've spent we are looking at getting some payback from the investment already, ie grabbing a decent share of prize money. Therefore the minimum goal for this season is to book ourselves a place in Europe, either through the cups or the league but preferably through the league.

Journalist: A major talking point for this season would be Lionel Messi, of course. It seems strange that with the best player in the world on board you are not aiming for the title. On the other hand, there are some doubts about how he will fit into Owen Coyle's 4-4-2, which does not require an attacking playmaker or an inside forward, the positions he excelled in at Barcelona. Please give us your thoughts on Messi.

Nos: He is an exceptional player, but also a very versatile one. He can play as a regular winger even if further away from the opponents' area than his typical role for Barcelona, or he can play as a forward. I expect him to clinch matches. However we are very well aware that every team is exceptionally strong this year, every single match will be extremely difficult as all opponents have star players too. We come from a few difficult years as a smaller club and plan to take one step at a time. A proper title bid may come in the future, or if the season exceeds our expectations.

Journalist: Thank you for your time and good luck for the season.

Nos: Thank you.

Newscastle United

Chairman: Nott Forest

Manager: Alan Shearer

Goalkeepers: Chris Kirkland, David Stockdale, Ole Soderberg, Pascal Zuberhuler, Fraser Forster(Out on Loan)

Defenders: Sam Ricketts, John Pantsil, James Perch, Maynor Figueroa, Joe Mattock, Thiago Silva, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor, Ryan Nelson

Midfielders: Michael Kightly,Brett Emerton, David Hoilett, Matt Jarvis, Saloman Kalou, James Morrison, James McArthur, David Vaughan, Alan Smith, Dan Gosling, Joey Barton, Hatem Ben Arfa (On Loan), Kazenga Lua-Lua(Out on Loan)

Forwards: Edin Dzeko, Sergio Aguero, Andy Carroll, Kevin Doyle, Peter Lovenkrands, Nile Ranger, Fabio Zamblera

It's the beginning of a new era on Tyneside and things have gotten off to a good start. The return of club legend Alan Shearer for £7m has seen fans become very happy. Previous manager Hughton had done a good job but with the new Premier League shake up he has left for pastures new like many players have. Like it has been said already we have been the busiest team in the transfer window and although it wasn't needed some of the deals presented and available to us were to good a opportunities to miss. The Euro draft was kind us and we got three top class strikers join us and they were Dzeko, Aguero and Pato. The latter has already moved to Blackburn Rovers for £35m plus Brett Emerton, Ryan Nelson and David Hoilett and although we would have liked to have kept him the three players have strengthened other areas of the the team without weakening teh strikeforce we have as we have Andy Carroll and Kevin Doyle as two other key back up players. Our fourth Euro draft players was Thiago Silva, who hopefully will be the defensive rock we need. The domestic draft wasn't the kindest of drafts but nevertheless we got some stable players who should be able to add some strength and depth to this side. We may look slightly short of central defensive cover but with us having £118.7m in the bank, Alan will have a fair amount available to him and although he won't be able to spend all that he will be able to use some of it to strengthen the areas he feels need strengthening.

Key players for this season will no doubt be the three Euro draft players that have remained on Tyneside and they maybe considered the better players but it doesn't take anything away from local lads Steven Taylor and Andy Carroll who will hopefully be able to provide some good competition in their respective positions.

With the squad that I have managed to put together and with the possibility of new faces still joining there is no reason why we should not be challenging for a top four finish or at least and Europa League spot. If Dzeko and Aguero are able to score the goals and settle in quickly enough then our first season back in the Premier League should be a successful one.

Welcome to Wembley Stadium!

After the disappointment of the summer’s World Cup, England return to Wembley tonight with a new manager looking to take the country towards glory again. With an apathetic crowd expected at Wembley tonight and the gloom and doom still hanging large in the air, the country desperately needs an excellent performance in order to make the nation believe again.

The new manager, of course, is Chip Butty and he has picked an experimental squad full of young talent and up and coming international players for this evening’s game. The opponents are the famous old name of Hungary who travel to Wembley looking to shock the Three Lions and spoil the first night of Butty’s reign. Let’s get down to Hazel for the team news ...

Thank you, Sid, good evening ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the tunnel area here at Wembley where I have the news over Chip Butty’s first team in charge of England. It looks as if it is going to be a 4-4-2 formation which will make many people happy.

England.jpg

ENGLAND

There are debuts and surprises in the line up as well: Joe Hart returns in goal for England, there are debuts for young defenders Gary Cahill and Jack Rodwell whilst Leighton Baines, Aaron Lennon and Ashley Young are also given chances to impress the new manager; there is also a surprise start for the experienced Phil Neville who comes in at right back after impressive form last season for Everton. John Terry captains the side – read into that what you will – and Peter Crouch and Wayne Rooney start together up front. Butty will also look towards Steven Gerrard to provide the creative influence for the front two.

HART

NEVILLE

TERRY

CAHILL

BAINES

LENNON

RODWELL

GERRARD

YOUNG

CROUCH

ROONEY

SUBS: Green, G.Johnson, Bridge, Jagielka, Milner, Lampard, Walcott, Defoe, Agbonlahor

England can use only 6 of their substitutes tonight so there will be disappointments there for the at least 3 of the players. After his World Cup howler, Rob Green has a chance on the bench, Frank Lampard returns from a disappointing World Cup and is on the bench as well. Theo Walcott, Gabby Agbonlahor and Jermain Defoe provide Butty with options up front should he need them.

Back up to you in the studio, Sid.

FIRST HALF

2 mins:

Early attack from England down the right hand side with Aaron Lennon. He teases the left back before delivering a dangerous cross which is half scrambled away. It comes to Gerrard who volleys the ball left footed on the turn, fierce effort, just over the bar.

4 mins:

Good play from Ashley Young sets Rooney free in the Hungarian half. The forward runs at the defender who backs off and Rooney looks to beat him. The challenge comes in and Rooney evades before sliding the ball across the six yard box to CROUCH who slides it home past the keeper! A dream start for new England manager, Chip Butty, as his side take the lead after just 4 minutes!

England 1-0 Hungary

(Crouch)

6 mins:

England are still celebrating as Hungary kick off and find Gera in the centre circle. He plays an instant first time ball through and finds the forward, Rudolf, in acres of space. It’s RUDOLF! Cracking finish, no chance for Joe Hart as the ball arrows into the top corner. A setback for England here.

England 1-1 Hungary

(Rudolf)

12 mins:

Throw in to Hungary down the left. It’s Vadocz who picks up the ball and slides it into the area to Rudolf again. Back to goal, the striker turns and hits it low and hard ... a second goal of the game for RUDOLF! Joe Hart will be disappointed with that but the ball is in the net again and it’s turning into a nightmare for England here!

England 1-2 Hungary

(Rudolf)

24 mins:

Those two Hungarian goals have knocked England for six and it’s the visitors looking more likely here still. Gera slides it through again towards the other striker, Hajnal, who ghosts past Terry and is in on goal ... saved by Hart who gathers it at the second attempt.

25 mins:

England break down the left with Young and Rooney again, slid in towards Gerrard, takes a touch, smashes at goal, blocked by Safar in the goal. Better play from England there.

28 mins:

Baines’ throw is cleared away as far as Rodwell who controls and finds Phil Neville on the right. He threads the ball down the line to John Terry who shows a nice turn of pace, low cross into the middle from the captain and there’s GERRARD! Equaliser for England! Great play from Terry and Gerrard turns the ball home from five yards.

England 2-2 Hungary

(Gerrard)

33 mins:

Another ball forward from Zoltan Gera, a real thorn in England’s side so far, and Rudolf is away for Hungary. Shoots early ... Hart turns it round the post to deny him an hat trick!

40 mins:

Ashley Young floats over a corner from the right, keeper punches it clear as far as Gerrard ... deflected away for a corner on the left! Great effort from the Liverpool man. Corner from the left then, cleared again to Gerrard, another strike ... Oh! So close! Just over the bar!

HALF TIME

England 2-2 Hungary

(Crouch, Gerrard; Rudolf 2)

An entertaining contest but England were poor in the first half an hour and needed an influential Steven Gerrard to haul them back into the game. The new manager better have strong words at half time because this is not a performance to show that England are back on the right track. Gera has been outstanding so far and is pulling all the strings for Hungary and Rudolf has finished excellently for his two goals. Can England improve second half and win the game?

FIRST HALF

HALF TIME

England 2-2 Hungary

(Crouch, Gerrard; Rudolf 2)

46 mins:

With the words of their manager ringing in their ears, the England side start purposefully as they resume with no changes. Immediately, England attack down the left and Rooney and Young combine to set up Gerrard in the box ... smashes off the post! So close to going back in front there!

54 mins:

John Terry heads clear from a long goal kick and the ball lands with Wayne Rooney. The striker finds his partner, Crouch, who ambles forward with the ball before hitting a fierce 25-yard effort just wide of the Hungarian post.

56 mins:

Young with the corner from the right, drilled over to the far post and onto the head of John Terry ... off the line and scrambled clear by Hungary. Great chance for Terry there!

61 mins:

Rodwell latches onto a clearance in the Hungarian half as England pile on the pressure and plays a delightful ball into the space for Lennon to shoot ... wide of the post, should have scored!

64 mins:

Baines on the left, finds Cahill who in turn finds Gerrard. The midfielder looks up and lofts the ball over the defence, Wayne Rooney is onside ... inside of the post! How has he not scored that? Great chance for Rooney to give England the lead!

67 mins:

Hungary defend four successive corners as England’s dominance continues. Ashley Young is seeing most of the ball and he gets another chance here on the left. Cuts inside and shoots ... straight at the keeper.

74 mins:

Long ball forward from the Hungarian keeper, ball bouncing towards Joe Hart in goal. Terry with the header back, what’s he done there? Headed past Hart, it’s Hajnal with a tap in for Hungary! What a dreadful error from the captain tonight, a horrible mistake. Hungary have weathered the England storm and lead again thanks to a monumental mistake!

England 2-3 Hungary

(Hajnal)

78 mins:

Great play from Agbonlahor down the left, beats his man and heads into the area. He has Lampard, Rooney and Walcott to pick from, goes for goal instead but it’s wide of the far post.

80 mins:

Walcott down the right as England search for the leveller, his cross is cleared away towards Leighton Baines. His first time ball back in is a good one ... ROONEY with the header! England are level again! 3-3!

England 3-3 Hungary

(Rooney)

A scrappy final ten minutes passes by with the odd long range effort and lots of Hungarian time wasting but no further goals. 3 minutes of stoppage time also fails to produce anything and the referee signals the end of an ultimately disappointing first game for the new manager.

FULL TIME:

England 3-3 Hungary

(Crouch, Gerrard, Rooney; Rudolf 2, Hajnal)

SUBSTITUTIONS: Glen Johnson, Agbonlahor and Walcott (61) for Neville, Crouch and Lennon; Jagielka and Lampard (68) for Cahill and Gerrard.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Gergely Rudolf (Hungary)

Two cracking finishes mean that the Hungarian striker was the best player on the pitch although a lot of credit has to go to Zoltan Gera’s creative play that made the goals possible. England’s best player was the reliable form of Steven Gerrard who showed that – even on an average day – he is easily England’s most consistent player.

SidSmash.png

Difficult match to sum up really – very entertaining match littered with good football, great play, wild errors and six goals. However, England would have hoped for a win in their first game under new management and the error of John Terry, at a time when it was a case of when England would score, really cost England. They did show good character to come back twice and with several big names to come back, England will be hoping for better against Bulgaria at Wembley in the first Euro 2012 qualifier next month.

HazelHarrison.png

I’m here with the new England manager, Chip Butty, down here in the tunnel. And what a handsome chap he is too. How did you feel that went, Chip?

CB: There were positives and negatives. First half was unacceptable and I told the players so, we improved a lot after half time, got level, dominated but then made a horrendous mistake. But we showed character to come back again. I’m happy with the way we kept fighting, we should have won the game but we didn’t which is the negative side of it, I suppose.

What have you said to John Terry?

CB: John Terry is an experienced professional and he doesn’t need me to tell him he made a horrible error. But when you make them, as a centre back or a keeper, you usually get punished and he did. He’s a top class defender and I know he’ll bounce back from it.

What did you learn about the players you brought in tonight?

CB: Some of our younger players have enormous potential but a couple of them are still a bit raw and need to work on their decisions. There were times when we chose the wrong options tonight so we need to work at that. It’ll come with experience.

It always does, Chip, experienced men are definitely preferred here. Back to you, Sid, thanks for your time, Chip!

That’s all then for this evening. In the end, it was a disappointing result for the new manager, Chip Butty, but England showed a few signs of positivity after their dismal World Cup showing. Euro 2012 kicks off next month and it’ll be time to get the wins and qualify for the next tournament.

Welcome to Anfield!

It’s August and it’s time for the football season to start again as the Premier League returns with a bang this weekend! SPORTS.tv is live and exclusive here at Anfield for the Merseyside derby as Liverpool kick off their latest Premier League title challenge with a visit from their local rivals, Everton. Both sides will be looking for a good start to the season and a morale boosting win as well as the local bragging rights that come with this kind of match.

We’ll also have the news of Manchester United’s latest signing, the first weekend’s other results and action and our latest feature, ‘At home with Hazel’ ... Our very own Hazel Harrison will be interviewing the great and the good from the Premier League in her own personal way. It promises to be an un-missable television event!

First up, let us review yesterday’s action. Early yesterday, we saw the first Premier League club to sign a player for a fee since the Premier League shake-up and transfer window as Manchester United strengthened their midfield with the capture of 18-year old Nampalys Mendy. The young, French defensive midfielder arrives for £2.9m and has been signed from AS Monaco despite yet to make his first team debut there. United will certainly have seen some potential in the youngster and have decided to act now.

Now to the action from Saturday starting at the Emirates!

ARSENAL vs. WEST HAM UNITED

Arsenal kicked off their season at the Emirates with new signing Christian Abbiati in goal and Jeremy Toulalan starting in midfield. West Ham had Alex, Giorgio Chiellini and Juan Manuel Mata making their debut as well as former Arsenal front pair, Robin van Persie and Carlos Vela. In a dull game of few clear chances, it was West Ham who had the best chance to score when they won a penalty late in the first half. However, van Persie blazed it wide and wasted it. The game petered out into a goalless draw, a good start for the new look Hammers.

BIRMINGHAM CITY vs. SUNDERLAND

Both sides had a number of new signings on show as Rafa Benitez and Steve Bruce locked horns at St. Andrew’s. Birmingham had the better of the play for most of the game and it was no surprise when they went in at half time a goal up. Nikola Kalinic found ALEX HLEB on the edge of the area who beat two men and smashed home at the near post. The Blues continued to dominate the second half but were caught on the break on 53 minutes. Steed Malbranque crossed from the right, Ben Foster fumbled and DARREN BENT stooped low to head home. Try as they might, there was no way that Birmingham could get back in front and they will be disappointed to only take a point.

BLACKBURN ROVERS vs. STOKE CITY

An even game at Ewood Park where new Rovers’ boss, Jose Mourinho, and new Potters’ boss, David Moyes, were looking for a winning start to the season. Pepe Reina started in goal for Rovers who also debuted Pato up front whilst Luis Fabiano made his Stoke debut in attack. However, it was the familiar name of EIDUR GUDJOHNSEN who put Stoke in front on 17 minutes as he slid home Lucho Gonzalez’ corner. The game remained at 0-1 until the 71st minute when Stoke got a taste of their own medicine. Morten Gamst Pedersen’s corner from the left found CHRIS SAMBA all alone to head home and equalise. The game was there to be won now and the winner came with 5 minutes left. Former Rover Martin Olsson crossed from the left and LUIS FABIANO guided the ball home to give Stoke the 3 points.

BLACKPOOL vs. BOLTON WANDERERS

Premier League football came to Bloomfield Road for the first time ever as Carlo Ancelotti’s Blackpool hosted Joe Royle’s Bolton in a close contest. Both sides had chances to win the game but – despite debuts for Zarate and Balotelli for the Tangerines and Milner and Toivonen for the Trotters – the game ended goalless. A good point for both sides.

BLACKPOOL 0-0 BOLTON WANDERERS

CHELSEA vs. WOLVES

Roberto Martinez’ side were looking to bounce back from their Community Shield drubbing as they entertained a Wolves side managed for the first time by Alex McLeish today and giving debuts to former Chelsea man Paolo Ferreira as well as Jonas, Benjani and Carlos Salcido. Wolves had two glorious chances to go ahead in the game but couldn’t take them whilst Chelsea remained worrying poor in the final third. Neither side did enough to deserve to win and it ended goalless at Stamford Bridge.

CHELSEA 0-0 WOLVES

MANCHESTER CITY vs. TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Back in May, Spurs won a crucial game at the City of Manchester Stadium to secure Champions League football at White Hart Lane this season. Today, the two sides met again with City looking for revenge under their new manager, Ian Holloway, who started with Robinho on his return to the club. New Spurs’ boss, Guus Hiddink, started Frank Lampard but the game was dull in the opening half as neither side created many chances. However, the game came alive on the hour as City took the lead. A dubious challenge from Nigel de Jong went unpunished and Lee Cattermole found Carlos Tevez on the left. His cross picked out DAVID SILVA who controlled before slotting past Gomes to give City all 3 points and the revenge over Tottenham.

NEWCASTLE UNITED vs. ASTON VILLA

All the talk on Tyneside has been about the front pair that new boss Alan Shearer would start with as Villa came calling. In the end, Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero were given the nod and the Toon Army were in dreamland after just 23 minutes. First, Dzeko won a penalty on 3 minutes that THIAGO SILVA dispatched past Brad Friedel before Aguero combined with DZEKO on the edge of the area and the Bosnian slotted home to put the Toon Army 2-0 up. Villa came back into it over the rest of the half and got their reward just before half time. Debutants Tim Cahill and Dani Alves combined to set up a sliding finish for SAMUEL ETO’O who scored on his debut. However, the Toon Army looked like they would hang on and deny Chris Hughton a win on his return to St. James’ Park until 4 minutes from time. Ashley Young’s corner from the left found JOHN CAREW unmarked and he headed home to win Villa a point.

WEST BROM vs. FULHAM

With many people fancying the Baggies to do well after they agreed a deal to sign Lionel Messi in the draft, manager Owen Coyle was under more pressure than normal as they faced Mark Hughes’ Fulham at the Hawthorns. A goalless first half brought frustration but the Baggies got into their stride early in the second half. Inevitably, Messi started the move, Santa Cruz slid the ball through and GABBY AGBONLAHOR rounded Mignolet and fired home to give the Baggies the lead. Despite the debuts of Hulk and ? up front, Fulham had no reply and the Baggies sealed the win just after the hour. Patrick Vieira found SANTA CRUZ on the edge of the area and the Paraguayan turned and calmly stroked the ball into the far corner to seal 3 points.

WEST BROM 2-0 FULHAM

(Agbonlahor, Santa Cruz)

WIGAN ATHLETIC vs. MANCHESTER UNITED

After winning the first trophy of the season at Wembley last week, United were looking for a winning start to the season as they travelled to the DW Stadium to face Wigan. Former City boss, Roberto Mancini, took charge of Wigan for the first time and it was the Latics who led at half time. Charles N’Zogbia took the corner for Wigan – who had De Rossi and Carrick making debuts – and it was new signing MIRKO VUCINIC who rose highest to head past Iker Casillas to make it 1-0. It took United until 13 minutes from time to reply but they earned a point late as they often do. Valencia’s run down the right was pulled back to Wes Brown who shot towards goal. With the shot going wide, WAYNE ROONEY diverted the ball into the net but looked suspiciously offside. However, it wasn’t given and United would take a point back to Old Trafford. The result meant that the so-called ‘Big Four’ of the Premier League had all failed to win on the opening day for the first time ever. Maybe the draft is working already?

WIGAN ATHLETIC 1-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

(Vucinic; Rooney)
