theflowersofmanchester
I'm thinking about making a mod that makes everything back to 1974 basically . I know it's all hard work and stuff but i'll eventually get it done hopefully. 1974 was the year my beloved Manchester United got relegated and Bayern Munich won the European Cup. I want to know the best players of 1973/1974 and future players who can play in their respective youth teams. So far the best players in the world will be Johann Cruyff and Franz Beckenbaeur each with about 185 CA. I'm not big on knowledge of the early 70's so help me out. KUBI
Wikipedia is a good source as it offers league tables and some player stats. As an example German Bundesliga: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fußball-Bundesliga_1973/

Think Bestie had just finished at United and Sir Bobby was playing out his days at Preston (I think) , Thanks for Bobby Moore btw , he'll be the best Second Division player. What do you think I should put Cruyff regarding CA ? (2nd opinion)
cruyff14
Well in 1974 Cruyff would of been 27 so he would have been either in his best form or just about to peak so you would be looking at the 180 - 190's mark for his current ability in my opinion. He was easily the best player on the planet around that time.

Deus84
In 1974 Germany and Holland (as a national side) and Bayern Munich and Ajax (as club) were the best teams. Actually Franz Beckenbauer and Johan Cruijff were the best players in the world, that's for sure. The best players in the world in 1974, all of them in their prime, were: *Goalkeepers* Dino Zoff Sepp Maier Ladislao Mazurkiewicz *Defenders* Paul Breitner Ruud Krol Berti Vogts Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck *Midfielders* Kazimierz Deyna Johan Neeskens Rivelino Gunter Netzer Wolfgang Overath Gianni Rivera *Strikers/Forwarders/Wingers Gerd Muller Dragan Dzajic Johan Cruijff Oleg Blokhin Hot prospect Claudio Gentile Uli Hoeness (22yo) Johnny Rep (22yo) Kenny Dalglish (22yo) Miguel Brindisi (23yo) Rene Houseman (20yo) Ubaldo Fillol (23yo) Mario Kempes (19yo) Other very good players (some of them declining) Jurgen Croy (goalie, East Germany) Jairzinho (30yo) Jimmy Johnstone (30yo) Denis Law (34 yo) Rob Rensenbrink Ronnie Hellstrom (swedish goalie) Ove Kindvall (swedish clinical striker) Luis Cubilla (34 yo) Hristo Bonev Jan Tomaszewski (polish goalie) Giacinto Facchetti (32yo) Sandro Mazzola (31 yo) Gigi Riva (30yo) Roberto Perfumo (31 yo) Billy Bremner (31yo) Danny McGrain Ademir da Guia

futre
hi! If you' re interested, here is an good link for data regarding the Portuguese League in season 1973/74, (has the indication of all the squad player's in the Portuguese league back in 1973/74): http://arquivista.wordpress.com/2007/04/19/epoca-197374-primeira-divisao/ History situation: The golden age of Benfica in the 60's had already finished (Their 5th and last European Cup final in the 60's was played and lost against Man Utd in 1968). However, nationally Benfica was still dominant, winning six championships in the 70's, while Sporting and Porto only 2 each (FC Porto came back to win the league 1977/78 after 19 years without winning). Nevertheless in 1974, some of the players from the golden age of Benfica in the 60's still playing: Eusébio turn 32 years in 1974 and had just won his second European Golden Boot for his 40 goals in the league in season 1972/73. Also still playing were António Simões (captain) e James Graça. Already beginning to dawn the youngsters: Bento (GK), Humberto Coelho (CB), Artur Jorge (ST) Rui Jordão (ST) Néné (FC) and Vítor Batista (MAR/ST). Fernando Chalana (MAL) was already playing in the youth team (aged of 15y old). FC Porto biggest star was Peruvian Teofilo Cubillas (WC 74 star) and the young Striker Fernando Gomes debuted in 1974.The biggest sporting star was Argentinian striker Hector Yazalde (former Independiente) that precisely in the 1973/74 season set the record for most goals in the league Portuguese to date: 46 goals. The Goalkeeper Vítor Damas was amongst the Sporting CP fans favourite. Regarding league supremacy: In the 70’s Benfica won the league 6 times in: 1970/71; 71/72; 72/73 and 1974/75; 75/76; 76/77, Sporting 2 times: 1969/70; 1973/74 and Porto 2 times: 1977/78, 78/79. One of the most fascinating things of a downdate, as the 1974 mod, in mho, is the a fantastic opportunity to have an endless list of hot prospets. And the possibility of keeping the game interesting for several years if you edit the youth teams. Imagine in 1974: Maradona (14Y old) in Argentinos Juniors, Platini (19y old) in Nancy, Zico (21y old) in Flamengo, Sócrates (20y Old) in Botafogo-SP, K-H Rummenigge (19y old) already in B. Munich, G. Lineker (14y Old) in Leicester?, Ruud Gullit (12y Old) in Haarlem?, G. Scirea (21y Old) in Atalanta, F. Baresi (14y old) in AC Milan, K. Keegan (23y old) in Liverpool, L. Matthaus (13y Old) in B. Mönchengladbach or Herzogenaurach, B. Conti (19y old) in AS Roma, etc... Pretty amazing!

remcob
Funny..Johan Cruyff is Holland's best player ever (no doubt). The second best is Willem van Hanegem, but he is never mentioned (extreme passer/free kick specialist/playmaker/ and then there is a fact he was nearly blind so how good would he be with good sight). eliseo
I don't have much time, but there I leave you some things about Argentina. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1974_Argentine_Primera_Divisi%C3%B3n#Campeonato_Nacional The first championship is for teams from Buenos Aires and nearby only, and the second one es for all the country. I'll then leave more data, specially about San Lorenzo (my team) and national champions that year
EddieGray11
Remember who were the champions at the time - Leeds United, who were robbed in the final of the European Cup a year later... Important to note with Leeds, they were the most superior team in the country by far as individuals and a team, Clough ruined it. If you're doing the 73-74 season also remember Leeds went 29 games unbeaten from the start and only lost three times in all.
cimmi
I can help you for Italian leagues. I have all "Almanacco Illustrato del Calcio" yearbooks from 1965 to 2011. But keep in mind that I can only work in their spare time because I'm busy with work.
eliseo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1974_FIFA_World_Cup_squads This (and anything related to the world cup) could be really useful. About Argentina's squad there's some things I can say: Rubén Ayala, a striker who made his league debut in San Lorenzo was a key player in 1972 titles (both Metropolitan and National) and in October of 1973 made his league debut with Atlético Madrid. There he played until 1979, winning and Intercontinental Cup, one Liga and one Copa del Rey. Carlos Babington (now Huracán's president) Attacking midfielder, with great technique and creativity, champion with Huracán in 1973, also had a good scoring ability. I'll then edit in this post to write about more players. Cheers PS: Kempes, being only 19 years old was the top scorer in Nacional '74 (with 25 goals) and was in the World Cup squad. Héctor Scotta, after being injured had an amazing 1975 where he scored 60! goals in the year. 28 in 38 matches in the Metropolitano and 32 in 23 games in the Nacional. More about World Cup players: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%81ngel_Bargas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agust%C3%ADn_Balbuena A hard working player, although he had no great technique, he was a good right winger. He runned a lot, had great satmina, was hard to mark and was a team player. When I have more time I'll write about more of the world cup plaers (in other post), and I'll try to find that years' squad

If you're doing the 73-74 season also remember Leeds went 29 games unbeaten from the start and only lost three times in all. That's absolute bull Liverpool were in a 2 horse race with Leeds in the 73/74 season which Leeds eventually just won, Liverpool won the FA Cup in the same season back when the FA Cup was considered the most prestigious cup competition in world football. To say that "Leeds were the most superior team in the country by far as individuals and a team" is laughable when you consider that Liverpool were being managed by Bill Shankly who created the Liverpool squad that dominated the continent, and a Liverpool player (Ian Callaghan) won the countries "Player of the year". The 70's and 80's were completely and utterly dominated by Liverpool Football Club. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973%E2%80%9374_in_English_football
