Strange player behaviour

I've seen my players do some pretty amazing things during this new revision of FM, but today I saw something I'd never seen before. My striker scored, thankfully I've seen that plenty of times this season, but its what he did immediately after. He ran into the net and grabbed the ball and bolted back to the halfway line. I'm thinking cool he's trying to get the game moving quickly. But then he kept on running. He ran with the ball straight back to my goal keeper, and then bolted back to half line and dropped it infront of the the opposing players and casually jogged backwards to his place. I'm confused. Also, why wasnt he given a yellow card for time wasting.
