looking forward to the final update.

In Messina news, although i haven't posted updates due to the impending arrival of FM12 (which i hope works for me again!!) i have played two more seasons, finishing 13th and then 10th in Serie A. steady if unspectacular progress. i have got to December of the 3rd season where we are again mid-table but i am winding that down now and trying to sort out graphics etc ready for the new game.

still haven't decided on my plans for FM12 in terms of which country to try...

I am thinking of going to Spain again and trying to finish it up there, I started as Haro in May and nearly completed, and it could continue a trend as well...FM09 - Fafe (POR), FM10 - Evora (POR) completed, FM11 - Haro (ESP), FM12 - ???? (ESP)

I think it has to be a team with only five letters in the name I am going to know them by though right?

My other thought was the trip back to Italy and another attempt there, after averaging 5 teams in this challenge each year I think I need to find a team early and just try and stick at it.

I have had fun compiling the opening posts (Slightly different style) this year, I have also included a bit of Big Euro Challenge History into it all, so I read back over all 4 previous threads and got some gems out of there as well. Been quite fun to look back over. Germany appears to have been completed the most, Portugal (2-3 times), Italy (4-5 times), Spain (3-4 times), Russia (Never), Turkey (Never), Holland (Never when it was in), Not sure, but Ohanzee got close in Scotland, France (1-2 times). But as well as completions there have been some great players, Radakovic, Javier (YP4), Dixon, Cilona, Jerome Herbert, Rotunna to name a few, and some excellent tales even from people who never completed, Fafe FM09, PaulHartman FC Libourne, and many others. So there is a sneak preview, hope you are all as excited as me, even though I am working for the first 3 hours or so after release on Friday.

I have now uninstalled FM11. I holidayed one further season, in which Deco pulled off a great 2nd place finish and turned a profit of about £4m on Luciano.

I still would have liked to see more of the future of Oliveira Bairro, but I've been finding I don't even have the motivation to open up the game and run a season while I'm doing other stuff. Onward to FM12!

LLR - Ahem! Let's not forget the Domegliara legend - Diego Pastore! There have been some great players for my Pajara Playas team but I've not posted them, because I've got slack.

Oh you may see Pastore in the list too :p (Knew I'd forget someone major in the short view) About 30 players in the list I have compiled I think...

Well I am going to finish third in my final FM11 season...Haro lost to Barca 2:0, drew with At.Madrid 1:1 and have a game in hand, but a 90+4 goal by Real Madrid over Sevilla saw us guarantee the 3rd spot with a game in hand.

LLR - I finished Scotland first, and then Venezia later on 2011 (last update here for Albion Rovers). Took me 15 seasons in both leagues I think.

As for 2012, I haven't decided where I'll go. Will there be any changes in leagues this time around? Any way of checking reputations already?

Thought you might've finished, just couldn't be bothered checking my posts haha...I'm not sure, I have acted as if they will all be the same still...we came to agreement with Gundo last year that it will stay at 145 rep the change over + Scotland, so hopefully we will keep what we have, Turkey is now closest to the slip, while Greece closest to coming up. I'll know once I get home, but will post the new thread before I leave for work Friday Morning so anyone who wants can read my stuff, and also start their own game...I hope to start Friday night, and hopefully get a series of save games up on Saturday Morning if I can.

The League

Wow, what a season, we started with a hiss and a roar, and I was competing with Barca, Sevilla & Madrids for the top 5 spots and this was completely unexpected to me. I thought it would drop off eventually, but it never really happened, Barca & Real pulled out a bit of a gap, but Sevilla and Haro did the same to the rest of the field and with two games remaining it was guaranteed that we would finish 3rd, after Barcelona beat us to win the league.

Spanish Cup

Well all was going well, until we ran into Madrid in the 5th round, a 1-1 draw there made it look good, and then was disappointed to lose 3:2 at home.

Fixtures

Europa League

Well we qualified well, and then pummelled allcomers in our group, this led to a knockout meeting with Lazio, we managed a 1:1 draw in Rome, but the trip back home resulted in a disappointing 2:1 loss and hence we dropped out of Europe.

The Players

Squad Stats

Keepers

Daniel Di Dio (GK) - The man between the sticks played a huge part in the reason we finished third this season, with conceding only 48 goals, and keeping the sheet clean 21 times we saw the creation of a Haro Goalkeeping Clinic.

Defenders

Fonseca (DC) - A huge defensive effort did play a part this season, he was very solid in his strong role at the back, but also knew he had a great keeper behind him. 2G 1A.

Toni (DC) - The perfect signing, we did have to drop Chiquinho to the bench, but Toni was the perfect signing, I don't think there is any doubt now that he was worth it as the only major change to the starting eleven. 3G 3A.

Raphael Zuppinger (DRC) - An amazing season from the Swiss maestro, he really has managed to work his wonders up and down the sideline. 1G 9A.

Sam Johnson (DL) - The Englishman has been just perfect down the left, other than a short period out injured he has ruled the left hand side, the two fullbacks played a major part in our success. 0G 11A.

Chiquinho (DC)

Ifenildo Goelab (DRC)

Ilker Birdal (DL)

Midfielders

Samir Turk (DM/MC) - The defensive midfielder manages to anchor our team well, he is quite yellow card prone, but he never gets a second and has very few reds in his history which is fine by me in the role he plays. 0G 9A.

Pedro Rutgers (MC) - He has been amazing since I brought him up from the Under 19s, a great effort by Rutgers this season as he provided an amazing 15 assists as well as keeping the ball perfectly. 7G 15A.

Miranda (MC) - He plays a lot of late runs into the box hence why he scores more than Rutgers, but he is not the best at ensuring we keep the ball, still a stellar season. 9G 4A.

Ruben Massaro (DM/MC)

Strikers

Marco Francesconi (ST) - I feel strange calling him our old man, given he is only 29 (My Age), but the captain has been with me near the start of this career and has developed a great affinity with the club, nothing amazing this season, injuries and playing as our third striker have really restricted him. 7G 8A.

Abraham (ST) - The 24 year old has really come of age this season and the team has delighted in having him at the front of the line, he scored 42 goals in 48 games through the season, and this was while still providing a huge number to our new young gun. Abraham will go down as a true star of Haro. 42G 13A.

Jocelyn Gosset (ST) - The youngster originally came in during an early season injury crisis, but when I saw him in action there were shades of a younger Abraham, so he started as much as he could. A great combo with Abraham. 25G 11A.

Necmettin Guler (ST)

Vebjorn Nyborg (ST)

Des Tiny's Trigo vs Abraham Update (Season 2020/21)

Trigo (Signed by Barca for 4.7M)

Trigo (Signed by Deportivo for 350k) - Well he spent the whole season with Deportivo, but he only made 6 appearances. Value is somehow still at 1.4M though.

Abraham (Signed by Haro for 170k) - An Amazing season for Abraham as he scored 42 goals in just 48 games, a true superstar for the club now, he has to be rated a lot more highly than Trigo, as shown by his value being at 7M.

Abraham more than doubled his total goals in that season, and I will finish with him there, a huge record he has amassed in just 119 games for the club. Trigo valued higher by Barcelona never developed and scored a meager 18 goals.

The Youth

The Results

The team managed the double once more, and after losing their first game then won every single one and scored at an average of well over 4 goals per game.

The Future

There isn't one, though I have about a dozen players signing in July. The next thing for us is FM12...

So now for me it is back to FM12 Prep (Though I have this game on holiday, after I resigned I stayed as an Icon, and Villa Boas took over)

I don't know how many of you remmeber my save with Algeciras, but I have taken it over to try and make it through the Challenge. We left off in the Spanish First Division, the year is 2021. We just finished 7th in La Liga (second best finish after our 6th place a few years ago), and are currently enjoying our second spell in the Europa League. Far away are any hopes of CL and domestic titles.

Algeciras 2021/22

Liga BBVA

Transfers

- We let go of the junk that didn't perform last year, and Romanian Badea left after a really good offer to go back home, impossible to reject. We signed a few youngsters, and Matija Pojak, Polish striker from Villarreal, who I had been following for years.

The season

We had lots of things to worry about this year with league, Copa and Euro Cup. We flopped towards the end of the season, and finished 11th, the worst position to date since our arrival to La Liga five years ago. We balanced 5-0 wins against the likes of Cordoba and Deportivo, with amazing defeats like the ones at Sporting (2-7) or a 0-6 loss home to Osasuna. Too irregular this year.

Table

Copa del Rey

- Went through Ecija and Cordoba in the first stages, when Real Madrid got in the way in the quarterfinals. We shocked the nation with a 3-1 win home, to then shock 60 year old Mourinho even more with a 1-2 victory at the Bernabeu. However, Sevilla got in the way and with a 7-0 aggregate, took care of us. Like four years ago, out in semifinals, but a good run.

Euro Cup

- After getting through a couple of pre-group stages legs, we won all six games in a group stage with Omonoia, Aston Villa and Amkaragucu. We beat Sampdoria 8-5 on agg in the first knockout round, Shakhtar 8-2, and Juventus 4-3 before Porto trashed us 6-2. On semifinals.

Stats not available (forgot the screenie)

- Tanque Alvarez signed 39 goals this season, amazing. The Brit was also part of the national side that fell on quarterfinals of the World Cup 2022 in China to ITaly (who would go all the way). 16 goals and 24 assists for Rocco, even though he is still to play for his nation. These two carry the team most of the time.

- I've been thinking about not doing any major signings and staying with this team for a good 5-6 years and see what they can do. 90% of the first team is 28 years old or younger--we have no need to rejuvenate the squad for now. I think I'll give them a try and see if they bring home any titles. Next year, with only Liga and Copa, the goal is to get to the final stages of the Copa, and play in Europe again next season.

Villa Boas managed to destroy Haro in one season from 4th to 16th, he only just stayed up, having sold Fonseca to Valencia for 5M, they then sold him to Barca for 15M a year later. He also sold Miranda, Toni, Zuppinger and others, as well as the entire 16-20 year old band I had created as the next wave of Haro players, he did gain about 100M+ in transfer fees, but then he spent 60M on tools :p

Good Luck Derek, hopefully the next season is an improvment as your players get better through training...

(Also as a side note I have a throat infection...so am off sick rest of the week so will be here at release time I guess)

Right. I'm close to finishing my final season of FM11, Hoping for another Champions League, La Liga double.

I'm a little disappointed I fell out of the habit of writing the updates (I blame work). As a way of trying to give some greats a bit of air time, I'll doa quic introduction to some of the players who have made themselves legends. Fortunately because I had an awesome investment in youth a lot of the players are still about. Will be a regret forever that the 17-year-old left back I signed and who made 800+ appearances has retired so you'll never see him.

A few will appear though.

Also LLR - Feel better, good timing at least! Looking forward to the new thread. I'm going to be more involved again this year, hopefully!

Right, finished the season. I won't bother doing a proper review, as it's a little disjointed. But I might do a little challenge review. Put up some players who have served me well, and some I wish I could manage for the rest of their careers. As well as some shots of the club as I leave it. I will, while writing this, and at other times, be leaving the game to holiday under the AI. I have, for that reason resigned.

Firstly though, a mention of the season. It was the first I feel I really dominated. I won the league by 26 points and the Champions' League final was a 7-1 demolition of Bordeaux.

The Club

Facilities - Unsurprisingly the facilities at the club are now top notch.

Competitions - Everything there is to win, has been won (except for the lower divisions, which I got out of without winning either).

Team Records - The 0-10 loss to Barcelona still hurts.

Individual Records - Kostas Labropoulos shows his legend status.

Finances - The club, thanks to prize money, and my frugal spending has become a financial juggernaut.

Best Eleven (Overall) - The cream of the crop.

Me - My managerial stats

Players - my greatest regret when it gets to this time of year is always the careers that never got finished. I may try to plough through some seasons after letting the AI have a go, but if not, here are the jewels at Pajara Playas whose stories will never be fully known.

Legends

Lewis Oakley | History - Bought from Man Utd as a teenager, and went on to make more than 500 appearances.

Jon Zubillaga | History - Bought as a 17-year-old. Took a while to bed in, but became a great striker. A firmly 1 in 2 man.

Ivan | History - Another who improved with training, going on to be a world-class winger, scored almost 150 goals for the club.

Kostas Labropoulos | History - A goal-scoring legend. Loaned from Inter, bought midway through second season, after his first season he never scored fewer than 20 in a season, breaking all records in the process.

Julian - Another who spent all bar one season at the club, a dashing wing back. Great player.

On their way - those whose careers I'd love to have got closer to finishing.

Miguel Garcia - A product of the youth academy. He was the only player to come through and make the first team. He's a great, creative midfielder who is also tough in the tackle and a nuisance generally. If this guy had finished his career he'd have been a true Big Euro Nation legend to rank with Pastore or Javier.

Giacomo Camelli - Replacing Julian, this guy would have been stunning. Arrived as a raw 16-year-old.

Ousmane Samassi - One of two great, great keepers, another who arrived as a teenager.

Jaume Ramis - Another who, with another seven years could have broken records. Already the best defender in the world, and he's only 23. He's been at the club since he was 16.

Jaime Perez - Arrived as a 17-year-old, his battle with Samassi is a great display of competition in the squad.

Tiago Barreto - On the way up (again after joining aged 17). His partnership with Ramis would have ruled the world.

Matias Rena - Would probably have been in the above category, but for two seasons ruined by knee injuries, second fiddle to Labropoulos for the advanced forward role ever since joining aged 18.

Christian Marchionni - Fast-tracked into the squad as a 17-yeaer-old as the future replacement for Zubillaga.

Halit Tugrul - Joined as an 18-year-old, his goal-scoring from the right wing is incredible.

Andrea Masini - The future replacement for Ivan, scored a hat-trick in last season's Champions' League final when Ivan was injured. (Joined aged 17)

Bjorn Kaspersen - Creative force in the middle. Joined as a 16-year-old fought his way into first choice.

Victor Santos - Another to join aged 16, he made his Spain ddebut at 17 and would have surely been the best left-back in the world given time.

And finally...

Those who could have been special had the year lasted a little longer.

David Moreira, Rui Nunes - Two Portuguese centre-backs who would have pushed the others all the way.

With LLR currently ill, I would expect the thread to appear fairly early Friday.

Pretty sure there wont be any major changes to the rules, though, so there's no reason you can't start your game off at midnight and then post your catch-up as soon as the thread is live.

So I guess my question was more in the nature of "will all the rules and specs of last year's challenge stand"? If that's a yes, I could just start it tomorrow.

Also, there are no new countries added to this edition, correct?

What about the possibility of, when achieved the challenge in one country, changing to another league (within the list of countries obviously) and starting somewhere else? The database would be the same size, so technically, it would be like starting a new save...

Twellman24 - The rules haven't changed significantly over the last few years, so I'd expect them to be roughly the same. In terms of teams, it depends on any reputation changes. Last year LLR and Gundo (I think) came to an agreement that Big nation meant league rep over 145, so if anyone has snuck above that, or dipped beneath it then the available nations will change.

The only problem with adding new leagues, I can think of will be the number of players, because I imagine the previous lot will stick around.

I am pretty sure all the rules stand, I have tried to just make them clearer because I noticed reading over the FM10 & FM11 threads that there seemed to be some confusion as to what people were supposed to be using. The thread will be up around 7am NZ time Friday (Which is 7pm UK time Thursday), so no worries on how long before that is up.

Adding of Leagues: I think we need to see exactly how this is working before really getting into it, and it will probably be more likely we are discussing from a getting sacked standpoint...so if you fail with one team can you add another league (Ensuring you remove you current league), and then holiday an extra season and take a newly promoted team to the title? I think we should allow this as long as it is only one league running at a time. Thoughts?

As for after completion if somebody wanted to continue there game and complete the challenge elsewhere the above could apply, but personally I would want to see what happened to my old team once I left as well...Thoughts?

The only problem with adding new leagues, I can think of will be the number of players, because I imagine the previous lot will stick around.

Hmm good point, I didn't think of that, maybe we need a test run to see what happens if we add a league and subtract the other...

My humble opinion: I think one of the most attractive new things of FM12 will be the add/remove leagues, and for this challenge, it shouldn't be any less. The biggest turnoff when it comes to playing this challenge is that you're committing to one league, forever, no matter what...it gets "lonesome"...but with 12 it won't be the case if we can add a different league if things aren't working out. Also I'm sure some (me included) get turned off by having to start all over again in 2011 if they want a different league, with the same teams around, same players with the same age, etc.

My proposal: if you haven't completed the challenge and you want to play in a different country, you could change leagues--that is, exchange them. You still follow the one league rule, and the database size should stay the same, as per the little I've heard from SI (we'd have to check that like LLR says).

If you complete the challenge: you "earn" the right to add another league (just one) and start all over again somewhere else, keeping your previous league--so a maximum of two. That way you can see what happens with your own club. Kind of like a perk for achieving the challenge.

I don't know, but my opinion is that we'd be silly not to use the new feature to attract more challengers to the Challenge.

You asked for thoughts, here are mine :)

I agree, it would be a pity not to use it in some way. Certainly I imagine they'll be no issue adding other leagues once you've completed to carry on the game, just as at the moment we can take on national teams once we've finished.

Fortunately, by the very nature of what we're discussing, we've got a little bit of time to think about it, work out how the number of players changes with league additions. I think it's vital we stick to the 'one league' system at least for the first completion, otherwise it changes the nature of the challenge with far more players available.

I certainly don't see a problem with adding/subtracting a league if someone gets sacked in principle. It makes for a nice way out of a disastrous beginning. But, it does depend on the number of players system. If you get sacked after, say, two seasons, and get rid of that league, add a new one - will you have all players from the first + the second to pick from? Because that's an unfair advantage over those who haven't been sacked.

Then again, we've always described this as a challenge against ourselves and the AI, not each other, so, if we acknowledge it, does that matter?

with regards to my game for FM12 i think that it will be either Spain or Italy again for me... trying again with Messina is tempting.

as for the new game and the subtracting of leagues for another i am open to the idea. i think it's a case of 'suck it and see' in terms of how it works and if it makes the challenge easier or not. guess we will have to see

LLR - can't wait to see what you have done with the new thread. sure it is going to be an epic read!! :D

Rlips - Ok, so I think we go with adding and removing leagues is allowed, but you can only have one league active at a time...with the excpetion being someone who has completed...

As for the new thread, I have finally finished it...now I just want to post it, but know I should wait til tomorrow (Unless it unlocks early for me :p)

I think it can only make things more fun! If it doesn't affect the db in a major manner, it means someone could keep trying different countries within one save without having to revert back--and tbh, the idea of winning everything then moving on with another league, only to make my new team the new European giant--and to be able to play in Europe against my old team...that would be awesome!!!

Absolutely got no idea what countries I want to try this year between this and Gundos - may give Dafuges a go first though this year. Dont properly remember what I played as last year either. Unfortunately although I should have my copy of the game tomorrow (its on pre-order), I'm abroad for another week so wont be able to play any challenge until 30th October at earliest. Just wanted to pop in say good luck to all those starting at midnight, I'm really jealous and will be following!

If SI has updated the Spanish teams (Castellon is in Third Division now), I'll go with them. Castellon was once in La Liga, even getting to a Spanish Cup final in the 40s I think. Castellon is the capital of the province of Castellon, where a little town in it, Villarreal, has taken over. Now, Villarreal is playing the CL, and Castellon in Tercera. My idea is to bring them back and play a La Liga Castellon derby! Even though I am a hardcore Villarreal fan (And actually from Vila-real), this would be awesome.

The only thing is, Castellon got relegated to Tercera due to administrative issues a few months back, so I don't know if SI have updated it. I don't have the demo installed-can anybody tell me if they are in Segunda B (they should be in Group III) or if they have been relegated as it should be?

Thanks guys :)
