England - The Road to 2012 (now featuring Wayne Rooney) but not his touch

Opening games are always interesting, games are tight. If you can get a win and a rival for qualification draws a tight opening game then you never know. In some respects it's good to play France first in a game where both sides may not want to lose (I hope anyway) :p

The England doctor has apparently stated that he can not guarantee Lampard can take part in any of the group games, due to his injury.

However will that be a serious enough injury for UEFA to allow a replacement?

The rules:

"In the event of serious injury to a listed player before his team’s first match in the

final tournament, the player in question may be substituted only if a doctor from the

UEFA Medical Committee and the team doctor concerned both confirm that the

injury is sufficiently serious to prevent the player from taking part."

Can not guarantee he would play in the grp games sound like there still is a fair chance he could, at certainly could play in later games (if England got that far).

Doubt it, think he would have been the backup. He's only got 2 caps, whereas Johnson played pretty much all the qualifiers there.

Under a different manager he played though. Walker would have started if not injured. He's the best right back England have.

Definitely think I'd've given England a better shot at doing well in this tournament than Roy has given us.

Which is the comedy attitude a lot of fans have, no matter who the England manager is.

Makes you wonder why the FA bother spending millions on a manager, everyone down the pub knows better.

Obvious you'd say that.

I'm fairly impartial when it comes to club loyalty tbh. I really rate Walker, but I think he needs more international experience and at least another good season under his belt before being chosen ahead of Johnson.

Although, for the record, we lost a random penalty shootout at the end of the 0-0 draw in Morocco. It was part of the "King Hassan Cup", a France 98 warmup tournament. Although it wasn’t a knockout or anything, just a mini-league, so not sure why they felt penalties were necessary.

I'm going to put a positive spin on our squad - playing devil's advocate.

It's just that recent tournaments we have come out of them with 2 "feelings". 1 - the players don't care. 2 - the players are too tired.

The likes of Carroll, Milner and Gerrard who haven't played as much football are more likely to be "fresh". (although Adam Johnson would have fitted here as well)

The likes of Henderson, Downing, Milner, Caroll etc may feel they have to really play well to justify their inclusion. Previously we had players who were on top form for their clubs so didn't really NEED international football. It was an afterthought. These lads NEED it. They will want to play their ass's off to save their club careers.

Just playing devil's advocate.

Not going to pretend to know anything about how it came about but surely penalty shootouts at the end of pre-tournament friendlies is surely a rather good idea?
