This game is played on an unedited 10.3 database. This story will be really basic. Mainly match updates and the like. Leagues loaded are England (Blue Square South/North and above) as well as America's MLS and Australia's A-League. Join me as I try to take a club that demands success back to where they deserve to be, despite not knowing a whole lot about the MLS system.

My first day on the job. Recently appointed Curt Onalfo had resigned after not even a month in charge and it was me who had been given the chance to take charge of the MLS's most successful side, D.C. United. The team has won four titles since the innagural season in 1996, but hadn't won since 2004. And it was me, a recently retired Australian, who they entrusted in bringing glory back to D.C. As long as they never find out I know nothing about the MLS system here, I think I may have a chance.

TRANSFER NEWS

I made my first signing as manager of D.C. United. I had noted we were weakest at left back, with our only option, Jordan Graye, not really up to the standard. So I have bought in 27yo Australian left back Josh Rose on a free transfer. Rose had recently been released from Romanian top flight club Universitatea Craiova and joins Danny Allsopp and myself in the Aussie contingent at the club. We are now one player short of the maximum squad size of 24 and still have one international player slot available and just about $360,000 dollars left under the salary cap.

TRANSFER NEWS

A bit of a trend growing here as I made my second signing. 24yo Australian centre-back Josh Mitchell has signed as back up on a free transfer from the same Romanian club Josh Rose last played from. We wanted an American but missed out on Kelly Gray, who signed with Houston Dynamo.

INJURY NEWS

Back-Up goalkeeper Milos Kokic will miss the start of our pre-season schedule after being ruled out with a thigh strain he picked up during a kicking drill at training.

INJURY NEWS

Terrible news today as our best centre back Dejan Jakovic was officially diagnosed with a hip injury. Sadly our only options were to send the 23yo Canadian to either our club physio or an outside specialist. We decided to send him to a specialist were they have estimated Jakovic will miss 4 months. If we left him with our physio Brian Goodstein, he would have missed up to 6 months. Aussie Josh Mitchell, originally signed as back-up, will likely play a more prominant role in the early parts of the season.

MLS WAIVER DRAFT

Really uneventful as we'd maxed out our roster their was no room to pick up any players. We had the 6th and 21st picks in the draft and we passed on both. In fact only three picks were used in the entire draft of 30 choices.

PRE-SEASON RESULTS

Western Mass. (a) 2-0 (Adam Cristman 17', Santino Quaranta 80')

Maryland Monarchs (a) 2-0 (John DiRaimondo 23', Chris Pontius 90')

I stuck with my assistants suggestions in relation to captain and vice captain. I named 34yo Argentine attacking midfielder Christian Gomez as deputy to 35yo Bolivian international Jaime Moreno who would lead us into battle this season.

22 March 2009

Our official figures for season tickets was announced today. 5975 tickets had been sold for the upcoming season. It is the fourth most in the MLS behind Seattle Sounders (22500), Toronto FC (15452) and LA Galaxy (7915). Chivas USA sold the least with just 840.

Squad (4-1-2-1-2): Troy Perkins (GK) - Bryan Namoff, Josh Mitchell, Devon McTavish, Josh Rose - Danny Szetela (Rodney Wallace 80'), Clyde Simms, John DiRaimondo, Santino Quaranta - Chris Pontius (Danny Allsopp 62'), Jaime Moreno (Christian Castillo 80')

We started the game all over Chicago and had the first chance of the match on six minutes. Clyde Simms picked the ball up in midfield and ran at the opposition defence before finding Chris Pontius with a good pass. The young striker cut in onto his right foot but blazed the chance over the cross bar. Our next chance resulted in the opener. A brilliant counter attacking move ended with Santino Quaranta on the edge of the area and his piledriver of a shot beat Jon Busch in the Chicago goal and found the top left corner to give us a 1-0 lead. Joy turned to anger though as our lead lasted just five minutes. Our defence was completely asleep as Busch took a goalkick and Brian McBride broke the offside trap to control and beat Troy Perkins one on one to equalise for our visitors. Just before the half hour Chris Pontius recieved a knock. It wasn't serious enough to come off, but if he had hoped to be avoided for five minutes or so to jog it off, he was our of luck. In the next five minutes Pontius had three shots on goal. Two over the cross bar and one well saved by Busch. But we couldn't regain the lead and went to the break level at 1-1.

Four minutes after the break, midfielder Simms had a great chance to put us back in front. Another searching run saw him shoot from the edge of the area but his powerful shot thundered off the cross bar and out for nothing more than a goal kick. Ten minutes later and it was Chicago's chance to attack our goal. John Thorrington recieved a pass about 20 yards out and turned Devon McTavish easily before firing at goal, drawing a top drawer save from Perkins low to his right. We made a change shortly after. Pontius' knock had finally caught up with him so I bought Danny Allsopp on to replace him. With just over 15 minutes left, a swift Chicago counter had us in real trouble. The Fire's $825k signing from CFR Cluj in Romania, Cristian Fabbiani, was on the end of a crisp passing move but blazed over the top yet again. My last roll of the dice came with ten minutes remaining. A double substitution which saw Christian Castillo replace the quiet Jaime Moreno up front, while Rodney Wallace came on for Danny Szetela but played a more advanced role than the defensive midfielder. It didn't do much however. Our best chance came with four minutes remaining. From a corner, the clearing header fell to Bryan Namoff who was lurking just outside the penalty area. The right back controlled well but his powerful effort just cleared the cross bar.

It wasn't to be today. But there's far worse results than a 1-1 draw on the opening day of the season.

D.C. United 1 Quaranta (1st) 18'

Chicago Fire 1 McBride 23'

MOM: Bryan Namoff (DCU) 7.8
