Its because i make some tactics in the Classic mold and some in the new, It really just depends i always try to make tactics in the new wizard way but if i feel like I'm hitting my head against a brick wall and not getting anywhere then I'll convert it to the classic and try that way and 9 times out of time i usually get it the way i want it.

As you can see i dont normally post on here because i have been totally useless at the game. But i just wanted to say a big thank you to Mr Hough and Dirtyace for the fanatstic insight into AVD MOD- Mr Hough 4-1-2-3 Unbeaten final version.

I am on a Chelsea save and i tried this tactic from the very start on the season:

won Charity Shield

won League Cup

won FA Cup

won Champions League

won Premier League

Premier League looked like this: Played 38..............won 31............drew 5...........lost 2............goals for 117................goals against 17............points 98

Record for all games played: Played 67.............won 58............drew 6............lost 3..............goals for 210..............goals against 33

Thanks once again guys for all your hard work!

I'm sure Mr. Hough will agree, but it's great to see such responses from other players. Makes all the work worth while :)

Looks like your having as good of a season as one could hope for. Glad you're enjoying the game.

AVD MOD- Mr Hough 4-1-2-3 Unbeaten final version is the best I've used yet cheers lads, i know I'm United but still it's going great and also all strikers are scoring :D

Looking excellent, though one small suggestion. Increase the passing for your left FB by one or two notches and set his through balls on mixed instead of rare. Just looking at your pics and I see you have Evra playing in that position. Makes sense to exploit his strengths more.

Mr. Hough and Dirty Ace congratulations on AVD MOD – Mr. Hough’s Unbeaten Final Version.

I'm impressed in attack, really I'm playing with Deportivo Atlas Club in Mexico, but defenders are being overplayed a lot and in my previous saves.

Defence is a leak I was trying something but I'm not sure yet what to do.

As I said attack works awesome, defence is at some point leak so do you have some suggestions?

When you say "leaking goals", it's a rather general statement. You have to provide more detail. How are you leaking them? Is there a certain way by which you concede?

The first thing I always tell people, is get better defenders, or at least ones with better key stats. That will solve many headaches without having to do any tweaking at all.

However, if you are very tight with finances, then you'll have to tweak something.

So, how are you conceding goals usually?

The main way i concede is if the opposition makes deep runs and my central defender tracks him and loses his position, I suppose it could be a simple tight marking issue and zonal marking instead of man marking, Annoying as hell though

Maybe to try lower with closing down?

i have oen defender on equal closing down with the mentality and the other defenders closing down a few notches lower than the mentality both on zonal and tight marking not clicked

Well, I have these problems sometimes too, depending the defender I'm playing. I have one who has 15 for marking and positioning, it's good but not great, so I usually just keep him on man marking, but turn off tight marking, and it usually helps. He gets beaten less, especially by fast strikers. Usually he'll keep a bigger buffer zone between himself and the opposing player. He's also not that fast, 13 pace and acceleration. So just turning off tight marking seems to help him in this instance.

Morning all, started a new game with my beloved Wigan Athletic with the squad updated to current summer transfers.

Sold some dead wood such as De Ridder, Gomez, Kapo, Scharner, Bramble and replace them with Eddie Nolan (Preston), Carlos Salcido (PSV), Mirel Radoi (Al-Hilal) & Humberto Suazo (Monterry), Lukman Haruna (AS Monaco FC)

I'm using the Mr.Hough and JP Woody Final Version tactic, only clocked on halfway through the season to take some screenshots of my season (duhhhhhhhhhhh)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/435/fmsquad.png

Here's my squad for the season.

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/3576/fmstats.png

Heading into the december and the creative Rodallega has got 12 goals and several assists which is something i haven't been able to manage to do so thumbs up on the goal scoring and creating methods used.

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/6568/fmriquelmecoup.png

Some how i managed to get a major coup and sign Riquelme which is really going to add to the central midfield pairing next season.

http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/4838/fmwiganleaguetable.png

17 Games into the season, position speaks for itself, conceeded some really scrappy goals against the likes of Hull, Stoke, West Ham & Portsmouth but this was my fault due to severly tired defenders and a lack of rotation.

http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/3140/fmchelseagame.png

Fantastic 1-0 against chelsea, dispite there poor position Chelsea are still a very hard team to beat, as you can see i conceeded ALOT of goals since the last screenshot and yet again only myself to blame, not enough rotation within the defence and not enough defensive back up.

http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/9933/fmarsenalgame.png

Another amazing 1-0 victory this time over Arsenal!

http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/2234/fmunitedgame.png

6th round FA cup tie against United and what a way to play away from home, conceeded a goal and pegged them back straight away

http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/9906/fmunitedgamereplay.png

Reply against United in the FA cup and well the result speaks for itself to be honest!

Season got quite dull after that, some surprising defeats to hull, stoke, tottenham(leading 3-0) and mainly scrappy victories.

http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/7905/fmstats1.png

End of season stats show Sauzo my leading goal scorer with 27 goals 41 appearances, Ben Watson quite high in the assist rankings and dirty Diame with 2 reds :p

http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/7123/fmstats2.png

3rd in the goal rankings with a team like Wigan is just.... speechless, if Wigan can score goals with half decent strikers then any team can!

http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/8103/fmstats3.png

End of season appearances, goals, assists, av rating, really impressed with my front 3 of Suazo, Boselli & Rodallega, Moses was brilliant as a sub and scored quite alot of goals coming off the bench.

Ben Watson was the pick of the midfielders 18 assists, honestly dont know how i can drop him for Riquelme with figures like that.

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/1221/fmstats4.png

End of season table, media prediction was 11th but comfortably finished within the top 10, had some real horror deafeats during the season which all contributed to the MASSIVE goals conceeded, 10 against united in 2 PL games, 5 against hull, 5 against stoke, 4 against tottenham the list can go on but all in all im impressed with the tactic, ive been trying since i first bought FM to build and succesfull tactic for my Wigan team and i've NEVER been able to get the best out the squad even with transfers so massive respect to Mr.Hough & JP Woody for creating a tactic which fits my team so perfectly in more then one way.

I almost agree your opinion man marking is better than zone for CBs. However I think turn off tight marking is not a good measure, because it could be make defensive problem. As you know, tight marking cling enemies like barnacle. So, if you turn on tight marking, your CBs annoy enemies and take away space from them. Otherwise turn off tight marking, the other side players get more space and they can dribble or cross or something like that more freely. Then, let's think, which one is more safety countermovement for fast players?

In case of you get into trouble through fast players, I recommend just move your CBs close down to left one~two notches or pull down defense line little bit, and that change might be make your CBs keep their position, so they don't rush out to fast players carelessly.

Sorry for my bad eng. :)

Mr Hough

Who are you testing your 4-2-2-2 with now? Having any luck with the defense?

Steve

I'm doing another season test with Tottenham, I have changed the formation slighty and now instead of 2 CM's there is 2 DM's. I didn't like this way at forst as it give up alot of space in the center of midfield but as i played around with it i came to think that it's extreamly hard for the opposition to break down and they genrally have long range efforts because they can't break us down. If you have a good keeper with good agility Arieal Ability amougst others you shouldn't have too many problems.

I still need to iron out a few issues but i see progress and thats a good thing.

Interesting stuff Mr Hough.

I guess that means retraining any AMC's to either a winger or DMC positions. Still it can only improve that defensive record, looking forward to screenshots of how your doing. How far along in the season are you with Tottenham?

i'm not testing it all the time just when i get bored with my other saves, I have changed the formation again and it's now a flat back 4 2 DM's 1 AMC 2 Wingers left and right and 1 lone striker, I have seen the opposition playing this way and they play it well so i'm gonna try and recreate it.

Mr. Hough with 2 dm's the goal ability remains tha same ?

No it was lacking so i moved a striker to the amc position to see if i can get him linking up with the midfield and attack.

There was a guy who brought out that exact style tactic in FM 2006 and it was one of the best tactics I ever used! Was very good defensively as you have the 2 DMC's, but with a good Set of wingers and AMC it was lethal!

@ mr.hough: well since more than a month, Im also trying to create a good working deep 4231 and currently in my palermo save, Ive played 3 games and only conceded 1 goal.

what Ive noticed is, that giving the two DMCs lose zonal marking will make them stay closer to the d-line which is much safer, than allowing them tight man marking, as they tend to stay much higher up the pitch and act like central midfielders when defending, and this leaves a huge gap between the midfield and the d-line.

its very hard to get the amc work well.

for example, I want mine to stay deep and support the two dmcs when were building the game and than in the opposition third, I want him to roam and to run into the box.

but mostly he unfortunately runs to early into advanced areas and so I cant really get a connection between him and the two dmcs.

am gonna try to decrease the tempo so that he takes a little bit more time to run forward.

would also be nice to get a beta version of yours, think I could get some tips for my offensive play since I feel, that I cant create enough chances.

and one more question: do you think, setting dribblings to often on your lonely striker would be a good idea? since I could observe that when were on a counter and my amc passes to my striker who has 3-4 players infront, he often loses the ball very quickly.

should I set his dribbling to sometimes?

Hey bud, One thing i did notice about the AMC is that if you have his mentality high then he will stay up the pitch so you could try lowering that as a start and the CF aswell i had my strikers on mixed settings for run with ball run from deep and through balls and also middle setting for CF aswell this was good for them so try that.

I find that my DM's are too close to the CD's but i'll crack that no bother.

There was a thread by Cleon where he was playing with Liverpool, using a 4-2-3-1 (2 DMCs, 1 AMC, 2 wingers) formation. He also described how he set up his AMC in a specific way so that he would drop into the hole often, plus link up with the DMCs. The AMC ended up scoring an incredibly amount of goals and getting numerous assists. Perhaps it would worth searching for that thread just to get some ideas.

lol I was givin him full cf (20)^^ cause I thought the amc is my key player with the highest attributes in flair and creativity and so on.

well I guess if you really want to create a kinda like plug and play tactic, which you want to have with more than one team success with, I guess you must really try to keep the cf low, as it really depends on the squad, whether you will gain success with one team and than fail with the other.

what Ive also noticed is, for example me myself am playing my wingers on wider play normal like you told me with a high mentality (17) but rfd sometimes. I first gave them cf (11) but could observe in some cases where my striker dropped deep got the ball and he could easily play the ball through the gap between the oppositions defender and full back, but the problem was, that my winger didnt run into that area. so I increased the cf to 15 and now I can see, that theyre really running much better into advanced and dangerous areas.

last but not least

dont you think, that you should increase time play when youre playing with one center forward? cause it often happens, that when I win back the ball from my own third, my players tend to play very quickly the ball.

but it often happens, that my striker is either isolated battling against 3-4 defenders or he doesnt even receive the ball.

but by setting time play to (10 notches) I could observe that you can keep much more possession and the amount of running to the touchline and than crossing into nowhereland decreased a lot.

Mr Hough I don't know if this will help but I had a game on the 10.1 patch with Southampton, no signings at all, where I played an assymetric 442 that came off really well, only lost one game all season.

Maybe it will work on this patch, I don't know, but it was something like this.

ST-ST

AML----------------

------------MC---MR

-----DM------------

DL---DC---DC---DR

GK

That gives a good amount of defensive stability, with the DM covering, the RM and CM helping, and attack from the DL, DR, MC, MR, AML, ST, ST. Seems like it would be almost a combination of your first two efforts.

Mr Hough first of all thanks,do u have any idea what was Butter's second tactic? He claimed that he found a way to brake the Mach Engine and not conced at all, don't u think we shoud find out some information about it?I've made some expiriments without any luck..

Hi, unfortunatly that tactics is gone, I reinstalled Windows and forgot to copy out my datafolder first. If you can point me to the original thread where I posted version 1 of the tactics I will probably be able to recreate it. I never uploaded Version 2 coz I felt it would destroy multiplayer games. I "never" conceeded goals with it and always won matches 5-0, 4-0, 8-0, 6-0. Acctually it made FM really dull and I stopped playing for a long time after I made that tactics.

I started out with Mr.H 4-1-2-3 10.2 tactics and tweaked the @£$£€ out of it. Haven't touched FM since about april but wanted to play again now.

Edit: Sweet, when I clicked my avatar here and pressed view my posts I could, earlier today I went into stats and pressed view all my posts and it kept saying I didn't have the needed privliges to view Butters76 post', found the thread and my V1 of the tactics. Will recreate V2 (from memory) and this time I will upload it.

Ive been using the Classic tactics for a while now, and i've dominated with every team, be it Beveren, Nott'm Forest, Fulham, Hearts, England, FC Utrecht, or my current 'project' Manchester City. My goal with Citeh is to limit non British players in the squad to a maximum of 5 by the start of season 4, the only exceptions being foreign youths you have bought young and trained for more than 3 years. Im in december of season 2 currently, and last season for the first time i went undefeated in the Premier League. In the off season i have limited my purchases to youth players but im bringing in a couple players for cover in the next window-Kyle Walker and Gourcuff, who i scored for 14.5Mill and couldnt resist.

Kevin Davies is an amazing target man for this formation, amazing both with England when i managed them and here with City. Fans were complaining when i bought him but 29 goals and 29 assists in season one with an Overall Average of 7.90 was enough to win over even the unhappiest fan. All the strikers were amazing, and the team really gelled beautifully. When i brought in Keita (Offered to me for 4.7MGBP) it took everything to the next level. My only loss of the year came in the 5th round of the FA cup to Newcastle: i was playing most of my bench due to injuries and tiredness, and in the first 20 minutes all 3 midfielders were injured and had to be subbed. NUFC were then awarded a penalty, and although we hit the woodwork over and over, we just couldn't quite score.

All in all we went 47 games unbeaten before finally losing to Liverpool 1-2 at Anfield in season 2.

The only tweaks i made to the tactic was to bring the FB closing down instruction back to Own Half, and set both CMs to Box2Box instructions. I also set the Target Man as Attack and set both other strikers to Poacher.

The Current Squad:

GK:Hart/Given/Smithies

LB:Bridge,Mattock,Lescott

RB:Onuoha,Toure,Richards, Mancienne

CB:Shawcross/Jagielka/Lescott

CB:Richards/Toure/Lescott

DMC:Rodwell/Cattermole/Mancienne

MC:Ireland/Wilshere/Shelvey

MC:Keita/Cattermole/Johnson*

ST:Adebayor/Delfouneso/Jo

ST:Davies/Adebayor/Lukaku

ST:Tevez/Lukaku/Robinho

*Johnson is terribly injury prone in my game, and gets very little time. A shame, i'd have liked to develop him, but im going to sell his ass, maybe in January if i can find a buyer.I'm also going to sell Ireland to make room for Gourcuff, and Robinho to anyone who will take him for a decent price.

Other subs: Reo-Coker,Kompany,Caicedo.

Youth prospects:

GK:Smithies,Boucher,Marcos Gomez Garcia, Vasilijevic, Lung jr, Courtois, Button, Mentel, Liam O'Brian

FBs: Simone De Marco, S Irwin, Ben Mee, Nathan Baker,T Skosgrud,K Trippier, Helan

Mr Hough can you please keep trying with your 4-2-2-2 with 2 CMs as im sure many people want to play this formation? you must of had it sussed up top because of the amount of goals you managed to score? maybe just a few tweek's and it will be there with the defence? Have you tried dropping one of the cms to dm like your older formation (cant remember the name)

Im sure many people want to play the 4-2-2-2 please keep trying :) or release what you had before :)

lol where did you get that many people favour a 4222 more than a 4231?

I guess the majority here would prefer a 4231 as this is one of the most popular and modern systems used in RL and people often tend to create these kind of systems in fm aswell.

and one thing to the 4222

mr hough, pls dont take it personally, Iam not criticizing you, but Im 999% sure, that you wont get more success considering the defence.

its just too offensive the system, remember youre playing with 2 central midfielders and 2 ATTACKING wingers and not a flat 4 midfield.

even with a flat more defensive 442 nobody has managed to create a super duper plug and play tactic, since you only have 2 men in the central midfielder position, which is very dangerous. you cant tell for example your 2 cms, that they act more like DCMs when the opposition has possession and than turn into CMs when your team has possession.

even in rl, the only team playing a kind of a 4222 at the highest level of football was bayern münich.

but just consider, that even they didnt have wingers, who like to work in defence (robben and ribery) they had 2 strikers with olic and müller who were natural fighters, closing the down the whole opposition are the whole time and trying to put pressure as early as possible. this has immensely facilitated the work of schweinsteiger and van bommel.

but how can you get this workin in fm? telling your 2 strikers to act like more an attacking midfielder, putting pressure on the d-line and the defensive midfielders of the opposition to interrupt their build up.

there arent that many strikers in the game, who has such a high workrate and I could observe, that even when you tell your striker to close down the whole pitch, it still depends on his personal attributes. if you have a striker with less working rate or determination, which isnt seldom for strikers, you wont get this work.

so my personal view is: if you still keep your work on the 4222, I guess it will end like your new 41212, that people playing with lower league teams or with teams like hull city, wolves and so on will have complaints about their teams' defensive performances. and not every team has a lennon, pavluchenko, modric or defoe to balance the defensive weakness.

It would be really nice, if you could keep your work on the much more realistic and modern 4231 sytem. I am also trying to create one.

have won my first 5 games in serie a with palermo so far but still not playing as I imagine.
