Download and install the latest DirectX - should give you the opportunity to when installing.

Even if you think you have the latest version, we'd advise all to ensure they do not skip this part of the installation process.

What error are you getting when trying to install DirectX?

My XP laptop is just hanging on DirectX installation:

"Installing Components:

Initializing..."

Just hangs on it. Done this both via the Vanilla Demo installer and when trying to install from MS website.

Alternatively you can just download the dll file from dll.com and put it in Windows\system folder.

I get:

An Internal system error occurred.

Please refer to the DXError.log and DirectX.log in your Windows folder to determine problem

When I try to install direct x 10 an error box comes up and says:

A cabinet file neccessary for installation cannot be trusted. Please verify the cryptographic services are enabled and the cabinet file certificate is valid.

Hmmm...

Same as the post above:

I can't install Direct X 10 either, it fails during the process and when I try to run the game I get the message in the topic title.

Im on Windows XP. The links to the microsoft site dont work either, IE and firefox crash when I click on download directx 10?

I think DirectX 10 is only for Vista and W7, try the latest version of 9.

Same with version 9, the browser crashes and says IE/Firefox is unable to load this page.

Going back to the demo folder, double clicking the Directx setup just leads me to "setup could not download the file. please retry later or check network connection" again. My network connection is absolutely fine, so i've no idea what to do next.

I'm not sure what to suggest to you then apart from maybe Googling your error.

I've had Directx 9 and I do not want to update it to Directx 10 under Windows XP so I updated it to the latest Directx 9 they have at Microsoft website and it made the trick for me. Link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3

edit: AFAIK Direcx 10 was never intended for Windows XP so even if you could install it under XP, I would strongly advise against it. XP users would better try to update their Directx 9.0c

Thanks for trying mate, i've had a look around google and found no workaround the problem yet. Completely re-installed, but it just hangs and fails still on the directx installation.

Just download the d3dx9_41.dll file and put it into the system32 folder.

Not into the system32 folder, put it into system folder.

Well my d3dx9_41.dll file is in the system32 folder on windows xp 64 bit.

I don't know, system32 is risky if edited, i'm working on Vista 32 bit. I put into the system folder, just like The Vet instructed some posts above.

I have no idea how to find that though. I'm rubbish with computers.

Click 'Start'. Click 'My Computer'.

Then just follow the path, so open the C: drive, then the Windows folder and in there you will find the system folder.
