Currently playing lower leagues and a 4-4-1-1 rigid philisophy, stick to position, less creative freedom. Always seems to work a treat in the divisions where skill is rationed.

My preferred formation is a balanced 4-4-2, this is how the beautiful game should be played! One tall, strong striker, one short, fast striker, two wingers and a flat back four. The two centre-midfielders get adjusted depending on the personnel. Nothing over-elaborate too, a simple short passing game and well drilled set-pieces. The tactic creator helps this, but I would still aim to play this way without it. I always like to aim to have the best defence in the league, it distresses me big time if we concede loads of goals. A 2-0 win is the ideal scoreline as far as I'm concerned! :D

After a move to Brazil my team lacks wingers and every other side plays a 4-2-2-2 so I might have a go at creating one but not sure on roles and stuff. Surely no wide players makes attacking a bit boring and narrow. Since 11.3 I have struggled to defend no matter what tactic I use.

even though im a narrow 4-3-3 we still play down the flanks ive got the two wide strikers to hug the touchline and the full backs bombing forward to give us width. just a few ideas if your going down that route

I am a big fan of the flat back three right now. I vary from a 3-5-2 to a 3-4-3. Due to my players being superstars in the Icelandic league I have a Fluid philosophy but in Europe I will go back to my Standard philosophy. I also had mixed success with a 5-1-1-2-1 early in my career.

I am also a very strong believer in the "pass the ball into the net" style of football, none of my players have long shots higher than "Sometimes". Because of this I am looking for pacey strikers all the time.

Also should we create a tactics discussion thread or not?

One formation that consistently does well for me is the 4-1-3-2, which is 1 defensive mid and 3 centre mids. I have used this for the majority of the time in the past few versions of fm. Occasionally I'll have to change it if results aren't coming. In my current save I had to mix it up a bit when we were promoted to the Swedish Premier Division but after a few seasons of safety I have now reverted back to the 4-1-3-2 which seems to be working reasonably well.

At home I set the team instructions to "control" or "standard" and away from home to "counter" or "defensive". Since my team isn't the most gifted I have set all their long shots to rarely as I am sick of seeing them wasting a perfectly good attacking move by blasting the ball out of the stadium from 25 yards out.

It totally depends on my mood!

I have an adaptable 4-1-2-3 from my FM10 career which I still use, but I've played with 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 4-4-1-1, 4-1-2-1-2 and a flat 5-3-2.

I used to detest using wingers, but now I seem to be using them a lot more. I only seem to use Control or Counter instructions it seems, again a product of the teams I play.

I NEVER EVER EVER allow my players to take long shots, simply as I've never had one go in since FM09.

Also, is anyone else finding that they're conceding a lot of goals from rebounds?

That's the exact same formation I use in most versions of FM. Except with Shakhtar where I used a 4-3-1-2 with AMC instead of DM. I have the same problem with long shots, but we (well we used to!) win more often than not. :)

i play a 4-3-2-1 with the 3 cms and then amr/aml supporting my lone striker. Very fluid short attacking game. I try to mimmick barcelona who ever i manage. But obviously when im Southampton i aint got no Messi's or Xavi's lol. I also play the same tactic home and away and dont change it

After spending so much of my FM time playing with lone strikers and generally using 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 style formations, I have gone back to preferring to use two forwards. I always prefer four at the back, so this means 4-4-2.

For some reason, I've just fallen back in love with the 4-4-2, and I love the fact that it forces me generally to use more complete players rather than focusing on specialist positions more often.

I have been a big fan of the rigid philosophy because I prefer the mentality structure. With one midfielder playing a little deeper, two attacking wide players and one of my forwards playing deep, I can generally get a 4-2-3-1 shape out of my 4-4-2 as well.

Despite using rigid mentality, I generally add more free roles and more creativity when managing a quality side. I find this gives me a nice balance of playing good and attractive football, as well as also keeping things defensively sound.

What philosophies do the rest of you prefer?

I use word to write as I go along and am usually around a season or so ahead of what I post. Working on monthly updates posting 2/3 times a week it means if I have a couple of weeks where I'm busy or don't feel like playing the save I can still post regular updates.

I also use Word as I go along (I've learnt as I previously wrote it out in the reply box only for the page to crash!) and generally play 2 or 3 seasons before posting to make sure that i'll be playing the save and updating rather than posting a new thread only for it to be closed soon after. As for the regularity of updates, personally I prefer both writing and reading 2-3 updates a season (pre-season, mid-season, end of season) but that's just me. It's entirely up to you how often you update your thread :).

As for Crouchy's initial question...I personally prefer a 4-1-3-2 counter attacking formation as this tends to give me adequate balance throughout the squad while also allowing me to draw the opposition in before catching them on the break. A solid back 4 with a protecting anchor man, a central midfielder who can get forward with 2 wingers who can also come inside to help pack out the midfield, and 2 strikers, one dropping in the hole and one on the last mans shoulder. As for the philosphy of the team, it really depends on the standard and quality of the players I have. I usually start in the lower leagues so quality isn't that abundant, hence me opting for a rigid philosophy. I always found the sliders to be difficult to understand so when SI decided to implent the TC I was really pleased. I always use the TC now :D.

The tactics creator really has improved my enjoyment of FM tenfold - I can finally concentrate on the overall gameplan rather than all the minutiae which quite honestly bored me.

I play like this:

Wing Back Centreback Centreback Wing Back
Automatic Defend Defend Automatic

         Defensive Mid Defensive Mid
             Defend Support

Winger Advanced Playmaker Winger
Attack Support Attack

                Advanced Forward
                    Attack

Balanced/standard for difficult games, Fluid/Control for games I'm favourite in. Creates some really great attacking football when it works well, I really love having a classic number 10 playmaking, and because my wingers are often shown inside by opposition fullbacks, the wingbacks get into some great positions on the overlap.

An important change I've made to it recently was to give the supporting defensive midfielder more license to go forward - changing his "Forward Runs" to "Often". Really helps supplement the attacks when we've having trouble breaking the opposition down, scored a good few from him bursting into the box and finishing after some nice wingplay, or a great throughball from the playmaker.

You have to view each season the player played in their history to see every game they played (eg click season 2010/11 for example and it'll show all the games).

Does anyone else find it difficult to sell certain players? and is there a upper age limit you keep players for? i always buy younger players keep them till 29/30 for outfield players and 30-35 for keepers before selling on as i like to get some money back for players, for instance its been a huge wrench to sell my number one keeper and a center midfielder ive had since they were in theri early 20s and have formed part of my spine for nearly 10 years.

I never sell due to age but I do try to bring players through as well so it becomes a bit of a balancing act. Over a few seasons the younger players take over from the older players and once the older players aren't first or second choice for their position I would usually look to move them on.

For instance my four DCs currently are 29, 30, 32 & 34 which is quite bad for me. The 34yo has lost a little pace but is still a good defender for the level while the 29yo is probably the worst of the four. End of this season I'll look to replace the 29yo & then end of next season the 34yo will probably retire at the end of his contract. That will leave me with a 32yo & a 34yo + two new signing between around 22 & 27. Haven't planned beyond that but its fair to say another will go at the end of that season.

my sides are always built around ayoung hungry team so i can make as much profit on players as possible and also keep a general rolling in and out put of players but some players stay longer, however as i normally have a a large section of players around the same age so i normally sell a chunk of them on due to age and the fact i dont like my squad dont getting too old.

It's actually sort of close to the Barca system in the wide play at least. Pedro/Downing and Villa/Young cut inside, with Alves/Johnson and Cole/Maxwell overlapping. Main differences are the lack of a Busquets and the difference in movement of Messi who is a false 9 compared to Carroll/Bent's classic number 9 role.

Actually thinking about the press reaction to Wilshere playing deep against Denmark, I think if Busquets was English people would cry about him not being allowed to go forward... *facepalms*

Its a known issue in the first season jarcar.

It seems to happen to random players for some reason but the good news is it fixes itself in the second season so its not an ongoing problem.

So... I tried to go back to my Trafford save. Played a few matches but couldn't get back into it. The team is the best in the world with some of the best players, winning the league is generally easy, and the only goal I really have is to get a new stadium as the 18,000 is holding us back something terribly. But that's still some 7 years away. Instead I started anew from the bottom. Haven't bought FM11, but is there any interest for a FM10 game around these parts?

I could just write it for myself, but with pictures and all it's a bit of work. Any format you prefer over others? I've not been around for half a year so not sure how this place has developed since then :)

The new save has been started using Uncle Ron's FM10 level 7-8 England file. I'm into the third season now.

Hello everyone, I was thinking of starting a thread in this forum and wanted to do one of those 'code' boxes to put down relevant career info, league tables ect. Problem is I havent go much of a clue about this sort of thing. I was wondering if anyone could take the time out to explain to me how to do them.

If I can learn how to do this I think I can get a basic looking thread going.

Thanks, pezza1

The best way is asking permission and copying someone else's :) But basically in code a character is always the same width :)

Just find a thread with the sort of table you like and ask someone if they can PM you the code they use, I am sure someone will do it as most on this forum are pretty helpful.

The best way is to copy the table into Word or Notepad or something. Then copy the column and use Insert, it the overwrites a character each time you type a new one :)

It's very easy actually. Just go to a thread with a table like that and hit reply to their post. Then scroll to the section with the table. You'll see basically just text. But it's messy cause most likely the linebreaks are not the same. So copy that text and paste it into Notepad. Now it will look proper, with text in assorted columns. That's who it should be anyway. The easiest way to make them is to write what you want in Notepad, and use spacebar to separate the columns (not tab key). When you are happy you copy the whole shebang into the forum reply box. It must be within [ CODE ] tags (without space). Just use the code button in the reply box.

You'll get it soon. It sounds more complicated than it is :)

Personally I sort of estimate the columns then use preview and make adjustments by adding/taking away spaces so they line up.
