Update 71

Years: 5, Months: 71, Days: 2154

The season is now completed, and the managers will turn their eyes to Brazil. But first, let me tell you how each of them fared this month.

Spain is to be our starting point, a country where Haowan Madridstas confirmed Barcelona’s status as title winners this month. Wins over Recreativo, Athletic and Tenerife were sufficient for the La Liga crown to be heading to the Nou Camp this season. Meanwhile, Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid will definitely be finishing in 5th place, a fact that will become meaningless if they turn out to have won the Champions League. Title winners Barcelona also participated in the Copa del Rey final which took place in Valencia.

Road to the Final – Copa del Rey

Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona started their cup campaign in the Fourth Round, beating Universidad LP 12-0 over two legs. An away draw at Racing in the Fifth Round was trumped by a 2-0 home victory, a victory matched in the away leg at Mallorca in the next round. A 4-1 win in the return leg ensured the islanders were beaten 1-6 on aggregate, and a tie against Getafe followed. Barca won 1-0 at home, and Getafe could only draw in the return leg, sending Madridstas and his team into the final.

Josep Guardiola’s Atlético Madrid also started their cup campaign in the Fourth Round, where their away victory over Huesca was greater than their home one. They began with a 3-0 away victory, rounding the tie off for a 5-0 aggregate win, and then travelled to Sevilla to beat Maz Armley’s team 2-1. When Sevilla came a-visiting, Atlético thumped them 3-0, but their Quarter Final tie was a lot closer. After defeating Recreativo 2-0 at home, the away leg saw their opponents triumph 3-1. Fortunately, away goals saved Guardiola and allowed him a tie with his cross-city rivals, Real Madrid. The giants could only win 2-1 at the Bernabéu, meaning that Atlético’s 3-1 victory in the return leg carried them into the Final.

Valencia’s five-year-old Nuevo Mestalla would host the Final, and it was just nine short of capacity. 74,991 fans cheered on their teams, and it took just four minutes for Barcelona to seize the lead, with Marquinhos’s head doing the damage. By half time Haowan Madridstas’s side were 3-0 up, courtesy of a goal from Alberto Aquilani and another from Marquinhos, and Atlético’s dream looked in tatters. They came back fighting, and grabbed a goal back through Victor Irineu nine minutes after the restart, and although it took some time, Barcelona restored their lead with a Lionel Messi penalty 10 minutes from time. Keirrison grabbed yet another goal back for Atlético three minutes later, but then after a second three minute had elapsed, Marquinhos completed his hattrick and put the game to bed.

Barcelona also took part in the Champions League final, with Real Madrid making up their opponents.

Road to the Final – Champions League

Needless to say, Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona commenced their Champions League crusade in the Group Stages. Celtic, Napoli and Man United formed their Group H. Despite a strong start with a 2-0 home win over United, two consecutive draws came away to the other two teams. Yet a 3-1 victory over Celtic put fans at ease slightly, although a trip to Old Trafford resulted in a 1-2 loss. Finally, Napoli visited and were beaten 3-1, allowing Barcelona to enter the Round of 16 and play A.C. Milan, a team they beat 3-0 at home in the first leg. Unfortunately, the second leg saw the Italians win 2-0, but Barca scraped through.

Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid also started their campaign in the Group Stage, being the Defending Champions and the La Liga winners. Tottenham, Marseille and AEK Athens were their groupmates, and aside from a 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane, Real won every game. Their only conceded goal was in a 2-1 home victory over Marseille, having won 3-0 at the Stade Vélodrome. This allowed them a Round of 16 tie against PSV Eindhoven, Dutch opponents which they dismissed 6-0 with a 4-0 home win, allowing a tie against cross-town rivals Atlético Madrid. A draw away set up the tie for a Real progression, which was achieved by virtue of a 4-0 home victory, powering them into the semifinals.

Barcelona’s Quarter Final opponents were Manchester City. The Catalonians won the first leg, in Spain, 2-1, and City could only draw 1-1 back in Manchester, powerless to stop Barcelona reaching the Arsenal tie in the Semi Final. A 1-3 defeat at the Emirates looked like the end for the Spanish club; they would have to satiate themselves with five Champions League finals in a row. But this was not so: they won 4-1 in Spain to dump their strong English opponents out. Real Madrid, meanwhile, faced a second Spanish opponent, drawing 0-0 at Valencia and winning 2-1 at home to secure their Final place.

The Olympiastadion in Berlin, home to Hertha, was just one short of capacity as 72,219 fans watched home referee Wolfgang Stark preside the meeting between the two Spanish giants. Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid made the stronger start, but it wasn’t as soon as Barcelona started in the Copa del Rey final, taking the lead 27 minutes in thanks to a Klaas-Jan Huntelaar placement. Eight minutes later, things went from bad to worse for Haowan Madridstas, who saw Xavi given a second yellow card and therefore a red. Barcelona’s challenge for the match subsequently began to peter out, but it wasn’t until the 65th minute that Real doubled their lead, Huntelaar scoring again, with the 2-0 victory being sufficient for their third consecutive Champions League, and being good enough to qualify them next year despite their fifth-placed finish.

But that’s enough of Spain. Let’s pop over to Italy, to ogle at the conclusion of their season. Ben Cee’s Inter secured their second consecutive Serie A title, winning all three of their games this month. Ben Taylor could not compete, winning one, drawing one and losing the third. They finished in 3rd place, while Mikey Twigge’s Palermo overcame the challenge and seized Roma’s initial 4th-place haven, having won three of four played games this month. Lord Weeman’s Napoli finished just behind Roma in 6th and won two from three in May, and they were followed by Tyler Burrows’s Udinese, who just missed out on a Europa League place. They achieved two 1-0 wins and lost their other two matches by that same scoreline this month, and despite finishing a place below their expected position, Burrows is Very Secure.

Ben Taylor’s Fiorentina may have been disappointed over their failure to capture the Scudetto, but they still had a chance to prove themselves in the Coppa Italia final.

Road to the Final – Coppa Italia

The adventure started, logically, in the First Round for Arsène Wenger’s Juventus. They hosted Empoli and beat the eventually-relegated team 2-0. What followed was a trip to A.C. Milan, won remarkably, 2-1. The Semi Final paired them in Milan again, against Inter, to whom they lost the first leg away, 1-2. But a 1-0 home victory ensured progression on away goals. Ben Taylor’s Fiorentina also kicked out their pursuit in the First Round, beating Atalanta 2-1 at home. They achieved another home tie in the Second Round, enabling them to see off Reggina 4-1. A 2-2 draw at Udinese was a good result in the first leg of their Semi Final, allowing a 2-1 victory at home which was good enough for a place in the Final.

34 fans couldn’t make it to their seats for the Final, but there was a strong crowd of 81,159. The match was destined to be a grizzly affair, and I don’t just say that because I have already seen it and it is a grizzly affair. Sébastien Bassong powered Juvé into the lead 23 minutes in, and then it all kicked off. Luca Cigarini found himself dismissed in the 34th minute, leaving Ben Taylor and his team one man down. After the break, Juventus added a second, with Hulk scoring, and waited considerably for that goal before getting the numbers of players level again. Mohamed Sissoko saw himself red-carded one minute after the goal, in the 52nd minute, and in the 66th minute Djamel Bakar was scythed and had to be taken off injured. Fortunately for Arsène Wenger, he hadn’t made any substitutions, so he could bring on Claudio Marchisio and hold out for the cup with 10 men, which he did.

Mikey Twigge’s Palermo will have been delighted at their ability to sneak into the Champions League spots. But they had the chance to prove themselves once again and move their season from great to epic, by competing for the Europa League in the Netherlands.

Road to the Final – Europa League

Martin Jol’s Hamburger SV started their European season in the Fourth Qualifying Round. They met Rubin Kazan, and after beating the Russians 4-0 at home, won 3-1 in Kazan to propel themselves into the Group Stage. They were drawn into Group F among Bordeaux, Loko from Sofia and Lokomotiv Moscow. They won their first three games, including a 6-0 victory in Bulgaria, and managed a very credible 2-2 draw in the most difficult game in France. They then thrashed Loko again as they travelled to Germany, 9-0 this time, and with qualification in first place secured, they drew 1-1 at Lokomotiv Moscow. They were then given English opponents in the form of West Ham, and a 1-1 draw at Upton Park was followed by a 1-0 victory in Germany for a narrow but well-deserved tie win.

Mikey Twigge’s Palermo also started in the Fourth Qualifying Round, against obscure Norwegian team Vålerenga. Two 1-0 victories were sufficient for progression. The Italians then met Dortmund, Lyon and Germinal Beerschot in their Group E. Despite opening with a 2-2 draw in Germany, Palermo started very well, beating Lyon 3-2, Germinal 2-0 and Dortmund 3-1 within their first four games. Their trip to France was tough, as expected, with Twigge’s team falling 1-3 to Lyon, but a 2-0 home win over Germinal in the final game ensured that they would top the group instead of their French opponents. This gave them a good Round of 32 matchup, against Standard Liege, and following a 1-1 draw in Belgium, Palermo won 4-1 at home to make the Last 16 with ease. Here they faced Zenit Saint Petersburg, and it was a long slog to the finish line. A 1-1 draw in Russia handed Palermo the advantage, but Twigge and his side couldn’t capitalise, drawing 0-0 at home. Away goals came to the rescue, however, putting them into the Quarter Finals.

HSV’s Round of 16 tie was against another English side, Roy Hodgson’s Fulham. A 1-3 loss at Craven Cottage may have looked decisive, but as Fulham themselves proved against Juventus in real life, it wasn’t, as Jol’s team 3-0 at home to send out their English opponents. They achieved their Last Four place over fellow Germans Schalke 04 by winning 1-0 away, leaving a 1-1 home draw as a perfectly satisfactory result. Palermo, meanwhile, lost 0-2 at Anfield but stunned their illustrious opponents Liverpool 3-0 in the return leg to make the Semi Finals. Here they faced Celtic, and lost 1-3 at Celtic Park. All was not lost, as they had shown against Liverpool and as Hamburg had shown against Fulham. A 2-0 return victory sent home to Scots. And Palermo’s opponents for the final were decided when Hamburg beat Zaragoza 3-2 at home. It looked like the Spaniards were likely to seize the initiative to win, but a 1-1 draw meant that it was Jol’s side who made the final.

Ajax’s Amsterdam ArenA hosted the match, in which 51,627 fans saw Hamburg take the early lead. Just 12 minutes in, Brazilian Alex Silva made a sparkling run from the halfway line and passed the ball past Palermo’s keeper’s legs. It looked like the Germans would romp to victory, but things stayed as they were until half time. Just after the restart, Palermo grabbed the lucky break and equalised via Edgar Cani. But before too long, HSV had restored their lead, with regen Bernd Böhm striking from 20 yards out. Two sensational goals weren’t enough to dampen Palermo’s spirits, as they fought their way back into the game, and levelled seven minutes from time thanks to Edison Cavani. Neither side could win before the ninety minutes, so extra time came, and was used wisely by Palermo who, in the 99th minute, had Brazilian attacking midfielder Alex unmarked in the box during a swift counter-attack. Alex placed the ball past Hamburg’s keeper to take the lead, and the German’s couldn’t fight back in the remaining 21 minutes, meaning Palermo had done it! They had won the Europa League!

And last, and probably least this seasn, we come to England. The country had a bit of a fail in Europe this season, despite entering numerous clubs. All did well, but none made the elite step up to any finals, whereas Spain had two finalists, Italy had one, and even chasers Germany had one. In the Champions League, Arsenal made the Semi Final and Man United, Tottenham and Man City the Quarter Final. In the Europa League, Portsmouth, Liverpool and Chelsea made the Quarter Final, Fulham made the Last 16 and West Ham made the Last 32. Chelsea had the chance to qualify for Europe in the FA Cup final over Man United. Even if they lost, United had already secured Champions League qualification, meaning that Chelsea, as 7th-placed team, would take the Europa League spot. Lawrence Lazewski’s team did win the match though, with Amauri scoring either side of Wayne Rooney’s goal to seal the trophy, 2-1.

So that’s it. The season came to a glorious close, and now the focus is absolutely directed towards South America. Can Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Brazil deliver a seventh title? Can Saul Goode’s Wales live up to the expectations (which, frankly, are nil)? Can Raymond Domenech’s France make a second consecutive final? All these questions, and more, are soon to be answered…

Manager of the Update

Although he got it last month, he has been managing well.

Mikey Twigge, Palermo

takes the award again, having won the Europa League and sneaked into a Champions League spot. To be honest, none of his competitors were good enough this month. Haowan Madridstas secured the league and the cup, but suffered a meltdown for the third time in a row in the Champions League final, and although Lucas Volman did win that trophy, elsewhere he was rather disappointing. Ben Cee at Inter also had a good month, of course, winning a second consecutive Scudetto. But Twigge has been so good this month it would be an injustice not to give this to him.

Glad to see us claim another Premiership title. Couldn't believe we got knocked out of the FA Cup, and then to lose 4-1 in Spain against Barca to miss out on the Champions League Final was a bitter pill to swallow.

It's good to see us have such a good goal difference despite conceding a hell of a lot of goals.

World Cup Preview

All eyes turn to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup. The ultimate prize in football will be contested in the next two months, with, naturally, only one winner. Brazil are the favourites to retain the Jules Rimet trophy, being on home soil, and I’d be surprised if we didn’t see a few very big wins for the World number 4s. Let’s take a group-by-group analysis of the teams competing, and canvey!!’s official picks to make it through to the next round.

We’ll start in a natural place to do so, Group A. This is where the hosts get drawn, so obviously Brazil are here. They are teamed up against some good, but not remarkable teams. Croatia will be representing Europe in one of three groups with only one UEFA team. 2012 African Cup of Nations Runners-up Egypt will be representing Africa, and the perennial Mexico are also in this group. Brazil will also qualify with ease, and I don’t think Egypt will be able to close the gap. Croatia are my favourites for the second place.

The big gun in Group B is a European one: Vicente Del Bosque’s Spain. Romania are the other team from Europe here, and they are on the rise, having made an appearance in Euro 2012 too. Ghana represent Africa and Chile bring South America to the table, hoping to cause an upset against their founders. Spain will obviously walk the group, with ease, but it isn’t too easy to make a second-placed prediction. Romania didn’t score a goal at the Euros, I’d rule them out straight away. Chile and Ghana will fight a tough battle, and I’m going to plump for Ghana on this one, knowing that it will now probably be Chile.

Another South American team looking to prove themselves in Group C; Ecuador. They’ll face off against South Korea, as well as Portugal and Saul Goode’s Wales. Portugal will qualify, and not just because they speak the lingo. Currently ranked 5th in the world, they were top last June and won Euro 2012. Their youth teams are also very good. I think Ecuador will fall apart when it comes to the actual finals, and South Korea will grab it ahead of a Wales side that aren’t too shabby.

A very sexy group is Group D, and I’m not just saying that. Argentina, presently South America’s best side and the world’s second-best, will have opposition in the form of are-they-Oceanian-are-they-Asian Australia, and are-they-European-are-they-Asian Turkey. Jamaica also give a nice bit of reggae pizzazz to the group. That’s correct, I did just use four ‘z’s in one word. Argentina are the clear favourites to finish top, but I don’t think it will be all plain sailing. They’ll win all their games, sure, but no huge wins, just nice and simple, but narrow, victories. Jamaica won’t make it; they’re only good for bobsleighing and the 100m, and Australia will fall short of the mark, allowing Turkey to qualify in second place.

Only two letters are used to begin the names of the countries in Group E. We have just one European team here, like in Groups D and A, and that is the Czech Republic. We are also graced with the presence of the very first World Cup winners, Uruguay, and their not-too-far-away American neighbours, the United States. Finally, an African representative in Cameroon. This is a nice group with plenty of opportunites for all. I don’t think Cameroon will be able to get themselves firing, and instead that the Czech Republic will make a sweet Second Round tie for whoever draws them. The United States are my other favourite to go through, probably in first place, with Uruguay missing out in third.

Group F is an interesting one, with two clear candidates for progression and two clear candidates for implosion. Germany and the Netherlands are the two European teams here, and what teams! The Rest of the World teams that will be trying to stop them are Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. The Nigerians aren’t half-bad, but they’re not too great either, and will offer limited resistance. Saudi Arabi, sorry Saudis, but they aren’t worth talking about. The Netherlands should win the group with Germany in second, and seven points each seems a likely combination.

3rd-ranked team Italy are among the competitors in Group G, with Norway being the other European one. The teams attempting to curtail them will be Africa’s Ivory Coast and Asia’s Japan. Not bad teams, but not good enough for Italy, although there will be an interesting battle for third place. I think it will be close, and I almost don’t want to make a prediction. The Ivory Coast reluctantly get my vote.

At last, the group you’ve all been waiting for, the group of the world’s best team, at least according to the rankings, France. They are in Group H with some interesting opponents; Iran, Peru and Russia. Of course I fully expect France to qualify without so much as a blemish, and they may well reach their third consecutive World Cup final, and it’s not too difficult to choose the second-placed team too. They beat England in the playoff to qualify, and Russia are surely going to qualify again. Peru will salvage some dignity but Iran will be left blushing.

So, those are the teams. Let’s see just how badly I mess up my predictions, in the next update.

A summary of my picks for group qualification (in order of my expected finishing position, too):

Group A: Brazil, Croatia

Group B: Spain, Ghana

Group C: Portugal, South Korea

Group D: Argentina, Turkey

Group E: United States, Czech Republic

Group F: Netherlands, Germany

Group G: Italy, Ivory Coast

Group H: France, Russia

Update 72 and World Cup Update

Years: 6, Months: 72, Days: 2184

Well, it’s only natural that I start with the World Cup, given that literally nothing happened to any of our managers this month.

Both Brazil and Croatia started off by doing well to move towards making my prediction correct, although the hosts and holders didn’t come flying out of the blocks like I had anticipated. Croatia achieved a 2-1 victory over Egypt, while Brazil beat Mexico 1-0. In Group B also, the two sides I had predicted to progress started off with wins; Ghana beat Chile 1-0 and Spain beat Romania 3-0. And Group C also followed the same pattern. Portugal beat Saul Goode’s Wales 2-0 and South Korea thumped their South American opponents Ecuador 3-0.

In Group D both of my predicted sides couldn’t win, as Argentina and Turkey were playing each other. But that didn’t stop one hell of a mighty surprise, and my prediction that Argentina wouldn’t win by huge margins wasn’t too far off – Turkey beat them 2-0. Australia also confirmed my suspicions of jazzy Jamaica not being very good by beating them 3-1. Once again my two teams played each other in Group E, with the Czech Republic and the United States drawing 1-1. Cameroon beat Uruguay 2-1. Nigeria did end up putting up some opposition in Group F, holding the Netherlands to a 1-1 draw. Germany capitalised on that opportunity by beating Saudi Arabia 3-1. Italy were facing my other predicted side in Group G, beating the Ivory Coast 2-0, while Japan inched past Norway, 1-0. And in Group H, Peru, who probably wouldn’t have made it here without their continent hosting the competition, held World #1s France to a 1-1 draw. Russia were also held, flabbergastingly, by Iran, a match which finished goalless.

In Group A, Brazil ended up with two more 1-0 wins, which rubbishes my theory of them winning every game in style, but they did, naturally, qualify top. The wheels on Croatia’s wagon came loose as they lost 1-2 to Mexico in their second game, with their final one being that Brazil one. Mexico only needed to draw 0-0 with Egypt to qualify in second place. Group B, meanwhile, saw Spain record a second 3-0 victory, over Chile, and then a 4-1 one over Ghana. Ghana had beaten Romania 1-0 and so, true to my prediction, qualified in second place, with Romania beating Chile 2-1 in the final game to take third.

My predictions also came true in Group C, with Portugal struggling ever so slightly against South Korea, but still winning 2-1, and then beating Ecuador 3-0. Ecuador managed to pick up a point against Saul Goode’s Wales, with Neal Eardley scoring Wales’ goal in a 1-1 draw, and the only home nation in the tournament lost their final game 1-2 to South Korea, Ched Evans scoring. In Group D I was also proven correct, although the teams did not finish in the order I had anticipated. Turkey’s win over Argentina in the opening game set them up for first with a 0-0 draw with Australia and a 2-1 win over Jamaica. Argentina beat both Jamaica and Australia, 3-0 and 3-1 respectively, to regain dignity and make the Second Round.

Once again, Nostradamus canvey!! is correct with his prediction of Group E. Sure enough, the United States trumped the Czech Republic to first place but both qualified for the next round. Following their 1-1 draw with the Czechs, the Americans went on to beat Cameroon 3-0 and then drew 1-1 again, this time with Uruguay. The Czech Republic also drew 1-1 with Uruguay, and achieved a narrow 1-0 victory over the Africans to get into second place. Amazingly, in Group F, the Netherlands finished bottom of the group in an abysmal campaign that will surely see Frank Rijkaard sacked. Drawing with Nigeria was only the start of it: that was the only point they picked up. They couldn’t quite catch up Germany in a game that the Germans won 3-2, and that was the case again in the Dutch game against Saudi Arabia, although the Saudis did snatch that one by scoring their third goal in the 90+1st minute. Nigeria beat Saudi Arabia 3-0 but suffered the reverse against Germany, putting Germany through first and Nigeria second.

Group G went exactly to plan, with Italy beating Japan 4-1 before drawing 0-0 with Norway, securing their progress in first place. The Ivory Coast drew 3-3 with Norway but a nice and comprehensive 3-0 victory over Japan made sure that they also made the Second Round. And finally, in Group H, things did indeed happen as expected despite a weird opening pair of matches. France and Russia drew 1-1 with each other, while Peru beat Iran 1-0, but both France and Russia won in the final game, 5-0 over Iran and 2-1 over Peru respectively, in order to make sure they both made the next round.

We’ll take a breather from the World Cup action to scour for something, anything, to share about our managers. Both the English and the Italian leagues reset this month, but Tom Smith’s Arsenal aren’t the bookies’ favourites to capture a third successive title. Instead, Liam Ferguson’s Man City are believed to be capable of taking top spot. Tottenham are expected to finish 5th again which, if true, would mean another season without Champions League football, not that Spurs can’t cope. Newcomers Ipswich are expected to drop straight back down in 20th place, but Birmingham and Stoke are said to be capable of staying up. Instead, West Brom and Leeds are the candidates to fill that relegation gap. England, by the way, got another place into the Europa League via the Fair Play system, allowing Martin Bojangles’s Aston Villa to thrash Xäzär of Azerbaijan 8-0 on aggregate.

In Italy, the status quo is very much favoured, with Inter tipped for a third title in as many years. Fiorentina are expected to finish 3rd again, and Napoli are odds-on to sit 6th again, but Mikey Twigge’s Palermo are, according to the media, going to drop a place to 5th. To be honest, that isn’t a surprising prediction, given that they only just made 4th last year. Udinese are also expected to drop a place, down to 8th, and rock-solid Reggina will finish 14th again, as touted by the bookies. Brescia, Pisa and Mantova came up, and the latter two are expected to go back down again, but Brescia are tipped to finish 16th, with Frosinone, who survived last season in part due to Super Lampard’s implosion, believed to not have the power to avoid bottom when all is said and done. Spain has yet to reset, although Deportivo, Murcia and Osasuna will be joining the big guns in La Liga next season.

Back to the World Cup now, and some of the Second Round ties were played this month, with some still to be played. Spain thumped their opponents Mexico, 5-1, and Brazil finally came to life in beating Ghana 3-0. Turkey were unfortunate to lost 0-1 to South Korea and dafuge, as our manager in the country (Besiktas have qualified for the Champions League group stages, by the way) will surely tell us of the misery of the Turks after that defeat. In a dramatic tie that only occurred because of Argentina’s inability to finish first ahead of Turkey, Portugal beat the South Americans 4-3 after extra time. Gonzalo Higuaín opened the scoring for Argentina in the 13th minute, with Portugal pulling it back three minutes later via Yannick Djaló. The same happened a bit later: Argentina took the lead with Javier Mascherano scoring in the 27th minute, but Portugal brought it back five minutes later thanks to Nani. 10 minutes after Nani’s 32nd-minute strike, Cristiano Ronaldo gave Portugal their first lead of the match, and it looked like that would be the final score until Argentina’s 88th-minute equaliser through Lisandro López. Finally, Djaló, who is on fire all the time for Portgual and plays for Ben Cee’s Inter, got the winner in the 101st minute.

Germany defeated their neighbours the Czech Republic 2-0 while Nigeria spoke for the whole of Africa when they secured their Quarter Final spot. Obafemi Martin started the scoring in their match just eight minutes in, although Jozy Altidore had it back under control for the United States five minutes later. Christian Obodo gave Nigeria the lead again, and it stayed like that until half time. John Obi Mikel doubled that lead in the 50th minute, and while Clint Dempsey’s 74th minute goal gave the Americans reason to attack like mad, they couldn’t make the breakthrough to win. The Ivory Coast face France and Russia face Italy in the other Second Round ties, with the Quarter Final line-up looking like this:

Brazil vs. South Korea

Spain vs. Portugal

Nigeria vs. Ivory Coast or France

Germany vs. Russia or Italy

Onwards we go, to July!

Manager of the Update

It’s a strange one this, because none of our managers did anything. There were some transfers in Italy, but not involving our teams. In a bold and unprecedented move;

Martin Bojangles, Aston Villa (formerly of Hull)

gets the award despite having already been knocked out of the sign-up. There were no actual contenders for the award, so I gave it to him. Saul Goode’s Wales were in the biggest football competition on Earth, so they also get a mention.

Update 73

Years: 6, Months: 73, Days: 2215

Well, the World Cup has concluded and Time’s hourglass is moving towards the new season, our managers’ seventh season in charge of their clubs. The slate is wiped clean: we saw three managers fired last season, will we see any more in this? The chance of a manager bowing out decreases year on year, but one thing is certain: they can’t stay at their clubs forever. Let’s take a look at the latest 31 days in the lives of our managers, as well as the conclusion of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

A good thing to do first is to round off the World Cup Second Round with news on the two ties of said round which took place this month. A resilient Ivory Coast kept away the barrage of French attacks to draw 0-0, and the deadlock wasn’t broken in extra time, either. Penalties did come to the aid of a rather impotent France, though, with the Europeans taking the tie 3-1 from the spot. A fairly close match saw Russia unable to stop Italy winning by just a single goal. Alberto Aquilani’s strike just a minute from half time was not cancelled out by a Russia team that were frankly well-controlled by Italy, and so Carlo Ancelotti’s side progress to the Quarter Finals.

The Spanish league has reset now, and, despite their inability to do so last year, Valencia are still the bookies’ favourites to win the league. Holders Barcelona, who made the magic 100 point mark last season, are tipped to finish second, but something tells me that the media and bookmakers will not be correct on this one. Haowan Madridstas’s team, without doubt, obviously have their sights on another title, which would be the manager’s fourth La Liga crown. Real Madrid are predicted third, but a lot of the neutrals will be hoping that they cannot make the top four again next season, and that they don’t win a fourth consecutive Champions League title which would remove the drawbacks to a fifth-placed finish. Valencia are making a good effort to strengthen their squad in preparation for that title assault, but it isn’t as if their two main title rivals have been sitting pretty. While Valencia’s four biggest incoming transfers totalled just over £70M, Barca matched them for the biggest transfer and both of our managers spent heavily, which is good news for Ben Cee whose Inter team netted £41.75M from these managers this month. Barcelona brought in Inter’s Hatem Ben Arfa for £22M, as well as Matías Fernández from Atlético Madrid for £26M. Real Madrid purchased Inter’s Rafael Sóbis for £19.75M, and also bought Adriano from Sevilla for £23M and Tiago Luís from Santos for £17M.

The two opening World Cup Quarter Finals were 3-1 victories. Brazil faced South Korea, and you can be rather confident that South Korea weren’t the team that won 3-1. Ramires had the scoring opened after just two minutes, although the Koreans did get back into it with a Park Jong-Nam equaliser after 14 minutes. Kaká and Vagner Love goals in the space of four minutes just after half time put the result to bed for Brazil. Meanwhile, Spain were playing Portugal, a result which could go either way, but given Spain’s performance so far in the tournament, you’d be inclined to go with them for the 3-1 win. That would be a correct prediction. Although Nani put the Portuguese in front from 25 yards in the 26th minute, Ignacio Camacho had things level before half time, and goals from David Silva and Mikel Arteta in the second half, the latter a penalty, secured the win for Spain.

Next up, Germany faced Italy and France faced high-flying Nigeria. Italy were constrained very effectively by the all-grey German team, not being able to break into the final third very much. The Germans kept the play very focused in the midfield and up front, but only got one goal to show for their efforts, coming from the fictional Ralf Dudek only minutes from time, in the 83rd minute. Meanwhile, Nigeria didn’t fail to disappoint. A strong performance not too much worse than the French one got them to half time without a goal going in either way, and it then got them to full time too. Karim Benzema put the French in front in the 112th minute, but Nigeria struck right back in the 115th through Elliot Omozusi. Philippe Mexès got himself sent off in extra time stoppage time to tarnish his performance, but Nigeria didn’t get the opportunity to profit from their one-man advantage. Nigeria would start the penalties, but Emmanuel Osey Okoduwa’s shot straight down the middle was saved by Hugo Lloris. Subsequent to this, all penalties were scored meaning that France won from the spot, 5-4.

Our Italian clubs haven’t been too busy in this transfer window, with Inter being the busiest money-wise but making virtually only outgoing transfers, those two mentioned earlier. Lord Weeman’s Napoli made two big move for Nigel de Jong, acquiring the Dutchman for £10.25M from Roma, and for Marouane Fellaini, £8.5M from Everton, and they also made two small move for regen Saudi goalkeeper Nayef Al-Fareedi, securing his signature for £1.1M from Standard Liege, and Christian Maggio, who joined from Real Madrid for £850k. James Salter at Reggina did a little bit of tweaking. Marco Andreolli went to Juventus for £7M, Salvatore Burrai joined Triestina for £1.5M and Egyptian Amr Zaki came to Salter’s side from Lecce for £1.5M. Udinese sold David Luiz to Atlético Madrid for £11.75M and made a profit of £132k from other, minor transfers, while Palermo also made some minor transfers and Ben Taylor’s Fiorentina sold Alejandro Alfaro to Tim Aubel’s Portsmouth for £8.75M.

I’d hate to be Oscar after Brazil’s match with Germany in the first of the World Cup Semi Finals. The match was a dull one, with Brazil carving out a number of decent chances but being unable to finish them, and Germany carving out just one on-target shot. Needless to say, half time came and went, full time came and went and extra time came and went. Both teams scored their first five penalties, but while the non-fictional Oscar’s shot was saved by the fictional Benjamin Krestschmer, the fictional Marco Krebs scored for Germany, putting them into the Final, 6-5. The other Semi Final was actually worse than the first, although it was a much more even affair with a much fairer result. France and Spain were locked into a pretty equal level of performance, but Spain capitalised whereas France did not, with Andrés Iniesta scoring in the 29th minute. That turned out to be the only goal of the match, sending Spain into the Final to face Germany. France would playoff with Brazil, in a repeat of the last World Cup Final, to see who would finish 3rd.

In England, Giuseppe Rossi seemed to be the name on everybody’s lips. No, not the Republican candidate who failed in the Race for the Whitehouse, but the footballer. He signed for Liam Ferguson’s Manchester City from Roma for the exotic price tag of £22.5M. Actually, it isn’t that exotic, and could be considered, if Rossi plays well enough, to have been a good deal. City, in a bid to snatch that title of Arsenal, also made two other big transfers, capturing Ibrahim Afellay from Tottenham for £13.25M and Matty Barton from Shakhtar Donetsk for £9.25M. Barton is an Australian regen striker before you ask, but he has scored 15 goals in 20 games for his nation, two of those caps being at the World Cup, although he twisted his ankle in the second, barring him from the third. Ashley Cole also joined City on a free after being unattached. Leo Dodge’s Tottenham were busy beavers, being involved in that Afellay transfer but also being responsible for another big Man City transfer. Dodge brought Robinho to White Hart Lane for the price of £13M, while he also sold Jermaine Jenas to Newcastle for £5.25M, and Dean Parrett to Q.P.R. for £2.6M.

Back to the World Cup now, for the Third Place Playoff match. It took just three minutes for the goals to start, with Lassana Diarra scoring for France. It looked like the French would go into half time one goal to the good, but for the remarkable effort of Ramires, who levelled the scores in the 45+1st minute. 90 minutes arrived with the score at 1-1, but the match was put to bed by Brazil, who had been playing themselves into it ever since that early setback, with Alex scoring in the 107th minute.

Now for a little word about Europe: vast.

No, no, seriously. Lord Weeman has reason to be pleased about European competitions this month. His Napoli team entered the Europa League in the Third Qualifying Round, and were drawn against Luzern of Switzerland. The first leg, in Italy, ended in a 9-0 victory for the home team. They then travelled to Switzerland and won 2-0, for a comprehensive victory. Other results from the Europa League were Martin Bojangles’s Aston Villa clearing two rounds this month. They knocked out Pobeda of Macedonia 8-0 on aggregate, with two 4-0 wins, to reach the Third Qualifying Round, where they beat Buducnost of Montenegro 6-0 on aggregate. Maz Armley’s Sevilla beat Brno of the Czech Republic 7-0 on aggregate, while Robert Boyle’s Newcastle beat Apollon Limassol 10-0 with a 7-0 home victory. Getafe also won.

And now, without further ado, the World Cup Final! Germany and Spain would meet in the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, where 91,999 fans packed the stadium, and filled it with raucous noise. In truth, the match was over before half time, but that could only be said with hindsight. The two teams were evenly matched which, I suppose, is to be expected from teams whose position implies they are the best two in the world. Gerard Piqué opened the scoring for Spain in the 27th minute, heading home from a corner. Fifteen minutes later, a foul on César Azpilicueta in the Germany penalty area gave Spain a penalty. Fernando Torres smashed it high and central to give Spain a lead that would prove unassailable. The Iberians won 2-0 and were the Champions of the World! English peeps will be pleased to know that it was refereed by an Englishman for the first time since 1974 (forty years of hurt and all that), Eddie Thompson from Orpington.

After the World Cup Final, Argentina were announced as the hosts of the 2022 tournament (I can’t remember who will be hosting the next one), and a number of managers got the sack. Frank Rijkaard, understandably, was dismissed by the Netherlands, as Pim Verbeek by Australia, Raymond Domenech by France, Fatih Terim by Turkey, Vahid Halilhodzic by the Ivory Coast, Bob Bradley by the United States and Petr Rada by the Czech Republic. But, bizarrely, Vicent del Bosque was sacked despite winning the World Cup for Spain! Raúl was his successor despite never having managed before, while Martin Jol took the Dutch job and Claude Puel takes the reins of France.

So that’s that. The World Cup is over, now the season can truly begin!

Manager of the Update

It isn’t too difficult to give this award to;

Lord Weeman, Napoli

for his comprehensive victory over Luzern, who, unlike some of these weird teams from Azerbaijan and such, aren’t extremely bad. Both Leo Dodge and James Salter impressed me with their tinkering, and Ben Cee did make a nice profit, but Weeman takes this award home.

Today's update:

Update 74

Years: 6, Months: 74, Days: 2246

So the season has started, and it isn’t a surprise to learn that there have been no sackings this month. Instead, we can concentrate on how our eleven football managers began their seventh season in the job.

England is the place to start, where Tom Smith’s Arsenal are doing well, having accumulated the full nine points from their first three games. Last season’s title chasers Manchester City were beaten 2-1 at home in the opening game, before West Brom were beaten 2-0 at home. A trip to Aston Villa saw the Gunners win 3-2, yet they still trail leaders Manchester United on goal difference. They also took part in the Community Shield, which they won over Chelsea thanks to goals from Theo Walcott and Emmanuel Adebayor in the first 17 minutes. Following their opening day defeat to Arsenal, Manchester City bounced back with wins over Ipswich and Blackburn, but Leo Dodge’s Tottenham are struggling in 12th place, although with two difficult games out of the way already. A 1-2 loss at Stamford Bridge was followed by a 2-1 win away over newly-promoted Birmingham, while United came to visit and beat Spurs 3-2. Tottenham also played the Europa League 4th Qualifying Round, beating Turks Bursaspor 5-0 at home and 1-0 away. They face Liverpool next but then have five games with the possibility for some good amount of points before the North London derby against Arsenal.

In Italy, Tyler Burrows’s Udinese have come out of the blocks very swiftly, taking the lead at the top of the table, although the Andorran shouldn’t get too excited: just one game has been played. Yet that’s not to say that things aren’t particularly promising after that game; after all, it was a 5-2 win at Fiorentina, which places those opponents 18th in the table. Ben Cee’s Inter, of course, also won, and are looming behind Udinese in second place. They beat Sampdoria 3-0 after having beaten Juventus 1-0 in the Italian Super Cup. Napoli and Reggina also won, with the former, under the control of Lord Weeman, beating FK Zeljeznicar Sarajevo 13-0 on aggregate, including 7-0 away, and the latter losing on penalties in the Coppa Italia 3rd Qualifying Round following a 0-0 home draw to Bologna. Mikey Twigge’s Palermo, meanwhile, contested the UEFA Super Cup in Monaco, losing out to Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid 3-5 on penalties after a 2-2 draw, and made the Champions League Group Stage by beating AEK Athens 8-2 on aggregate in the Qualifying Round, including a 5-2 away win. As a result, they have a game in hand on other teams in their division.

Just because the season has started doesn’t mean that transfers should stop, and indeed there were a number of big transfers this month. Italian leaders Udinese had two major sales: Marco Motta joined A.C. Milan for £15.25M and Portuguese leftback Antunes joined Inter for £12M. Ben Cee’s side also bought Daniel Aquino from Manchester United for £15.5M, Adigun Salami from CSKA Moscow for £7.5M and Tales from Fiorentina for £18M, although they sold Sulley Muntari to Manchester City for £15.75M. City made a number of other big transfers, that number being two: Ashley Young joined from Martin Bojangles’s Aston Villa for £12M and Simon Vukcevic arrived from A.C. Milan for £9.25M. Real Madrid bought Roberto Soldado from A.C. Milan for £17.5M and sold Carlos Villanueva to Zaragoza for £5.25M, and Lord Weeman’s Napoli bought Vasco Regini from Torino for £5M, but made more than six times that in selling Marquinhos to A.C. Milan (£19.75M) and Fernandinho to Atlético Madrid (£10.75M).

The Champions League groups have been drawn, and this year only two of our teams will face each other. Palermo and Real Madrid, who met in the UEFA Super Cup, are both drawn in Group D with Brøndby and Benfica. The group could go many ways, with Benfica ousting Palermo to second maybe, although Palermo and Benfica could both go through if they can do well enough. Mikey Twigge may feel that the task of stopping Real Madrid from winning their fourth consecutive Champions League lies on his shoulders. Meanwhile, Inter have sc Heerenveen, Fenerbahçe and Zenit Saint Petersburg; Barcelona have Bordeaux, Rangers and Manchester United, a nice and juicy group; Arsenal have Basel, Porto and Werder Bremen; Fiorentina have Panathanaikos, Liverpool and Feyenoord and Manchester City have Valencia, Sparta Prague and Red Star Belgrade. dafuge's Besiktas have a good chance of qualifying from their group, but it won’t be a walk in the park: Hertha Berlin, A.C. Milan and Celtic make up their groupmates.

And last, but not least, we come to Spain. Teams here have played two games, although Real Madrid have of course only played the one. They lost that one, 1-3 at home to Real Sociedad, making people predict even this early on that they will finish outside the top four for the second year running. Even Barcelona won one and lost one, and are currently in 9th place. They lost away to Elche but beat highly-touted Valencia, which does not bode well for any hopes of a non-Big Two title winner. They lost the Spanish Super Cup 2-3 to Atlético Madrid, losing 1-2 in the capital and only drawing 1-1 at home. Zaragoza sit atop La Liga, although Racing and Villarreal also have six points.

Manager of the Update

There are two major contenders here, and apologies to;

Tom Smith, Arsenal

because I’m going to give this one to;

Lord Weeman, Napoli

for spinning a transfer profit, winning his first game of the season and beating a Bosnian team 13-0 on aggregate. Arsenal also had the perfect start to the season although didn’t tally the transfer profit, winning all three games and winning the Community Shield. Meanwhile, Lucas Volman won the UEFA Super Cup but had a shocking domestic league opener, and Ben Cee at Inter won the Italian Super Cup and his league’s first game.

Yesterday's update:

Update 75

Years: 6, Months: 75, Days: 2276

There were no sackings at all this month either, but that isn’t surprising given that the season isn’t in full swing just yet. Of course, there was plenty of action, ranging from the early rounds of the FA Cup to international action in the form of Euro 2016 Qualifiers. Stuart Pearce’s England committed the cardinal sin of losing to Luxembourg, Northern Ireland drew 1-1 with Montenegro, Scotland won 2-1 in Israel, and Saul Goode’s Wales beat visitors Turkey 1-0. The biggest win was Croatia’s 6-1 victory over the Faroe Islands.

In Spain, the big sides have ascended back towards the top of the table after a poor start to the season last month. Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona won three of four games this month to place them in second, as well as defeating visitors Manchester United in their Champions League group. Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid started the month with a 0-1 loss to leaders Villarreal, but won their next four games by an aggregate score of 11-0, including 4-0 home wins over Sporting and Deportivo. They also played in the Champions League, winning 2-0 at Benfica.

Tyler Burrows’s Udinese are still top of Serie A, and have in fact gained two points on defending champions Inter this month. They won 3-0 at Pisa, 2-0 at Livorno and welcomed Parma to Friuli, beating them 6-0. A 1-1 draw at home to Atalanta was the only blip but it hasn’t cost them badly or anything like that. Lazio follow, with Ben Cee’s Inter in third place. They won two of their four games this month, drawing the other two. They also sneaked a narrow 1-0 in Turkey against Fenerbahçe. James Salter’s Reggina are in sixth place, but I’m sure both Jonte Rhodes and Icarus will tell us the dangers of flying too close to the sun. In September, Reggina won two, drew one and lost one, with the highlight coming without doubt in their 5-1 win over Fiorentina. Lord Weeman’s Napoli also beat Fiorentina, 2-0, as well as Pisa, but they drew at Inter and lost at Parma. The Europa League saw them draw 0-0 at Ajax, with Lokomotiv Moscow and Auxerre making up the rest of their group.

In England, Arsenal’s ship goes steaming straight away, while their North London rivals Tottenham flounder in 15th place. This month, Tom Smith’s team won all their games, including 1-0 at Craven Cottage, 3-0 against visitors Everton and 2-0 at Fratton Park. They also had the easiest of their Champions League group stage games, at home to Basel, and won that 8-0. Finally, they secured Carling Cup progression by beating Stoke 3-0 away in the Third Round. Meanwhile, Liam Ferguson’s Man City are fifth, and their month could be considered a poor one, although it wasn’t too bad. Based on last season’s performance, however, they’ll want to be doing better than this month-in month-out. They beat Aston Villa 5-1 in the league but drew with West Brom and Fulham, and only narrowly beat visitors Bristol City in the Carling Cup, 1-0. But they did manage to beat the highly-touted Valencia 2-1 in the Champions League, and then travel to the Czech Republic to defeat Sparta Prague 3-0. In the Carling Cup, Tottenham are also through after beating Neppo Monster’s Bolton 4-0.

Delving into Europe now, just for coverage on the games I haven’t mentioned. In the Champions League, Palermo beat visitors Brøndby 2-0, while Fiorentina lost 0-1 at Anfield and won 5-0 over visiting Feyenoord. dafuge's Besiktas lost 0-3 in Scotland against Celtic but beat Hertha Berlin 2-1, and the Turks currently sit at the bottom of their group. In the Europa League, Tottenham welcomed BATE of Belarus to White Hart Lane, in order to thrash them 6-0. CSKA Moscow and Aris are Spurs’ groupmates.

I think now we could constitute the season as being in full swing. There are, needless to say, plenty of games to come, but we’re coming up to the time when chairmen start considering just how well their managers are doing.

Manager of the Update

There isn’t a single shadow of a doubt this month.

Tom Smith, Arsenal

takes this for his beautiful month in three competitions, without conceding a goal. He won all three Premier League games including a tough one at Craven Cottage, as well as beaten Stoke 3-0 in the Carling Cup and Basel 8-0 in the Champions League. Tyler Burrows also did very well, and both manages in Spain Haowan Madridstas and Lucas Volman had good months, but all three were a distance behind Smith and his Gunners firing on all cylinders.

Update 76

Years: 5, Months: 76, Days: 2307

No introductory paragraph this time, and instead we’ll travel directly to Spain, where both of our teams are having difficulties, with Real Madrid having greater ones. Lucas Volman’s side are in fifth place and three points behind leaders Zaragoza, having played an extra game. It’s still early days of course, but in the even earlier days of the first season, you would have already seen Real with a lead at the top. In October, they won two of their four games, but they drew with Valencia at home and lost to Tenerife away. This year, it was their turn to draw Universidad LP in the Copa del Rey 4th Round, and they beat their opponents 3-0 away. Barcelona, meanwhile, are in 3rd and are just two points off the pace. They’re the other team with a game in hand which means they can overtake Zaragoza by winning it. They played three games this month, winning two and drawing one, while beating Huesca 3-1 away in the first leg of their Spanish Cup tie.

It probably won’t surprise you by now: Tyler Burrows’s Udinese are still top of Serie A, although it is not by points and only due to results between teams and their hefty goal difference. October started badly with a 0-1 home defeat to Brescia, although they bounced back by beating Genoa and Lazio and drawing at Juventus. Meanwhile, encroaching Inter secured an extra point by winning three of their four games, losing the fourth. Ben Taylor’s Fiorentina were their victors, beating them 3-1, as well as Roma 3-2. Those six points were six of seven for the four games played in the month, and Fiorentina are currently 10th. They form a cluster of our managers, with Reggina above them in 9th and Palermo below them in 11th. None of our managers in Italy had particularly good months domestically, with Lord Weeman at Napoli probably being the one who had the best: they beat Genoa and Lazio while drawing with Livorno and Brescia.

There was plenty of action on the European stage this month, and we’ll start with the Champions League. Inter’s 3-0 victory over sc Heerenveen was the joint-highest scoreline of October 1st, while Arsenal overcame Werder Bremen 3-2 in a narrow game in Germany. Real Madrid beat Palermo 2-0 while Barcelona drew goalless at Ibrox. Later on in the month, both Fiorentina and Man City won 3-1 away, at Panathanaikos and Sparta Prague respectively, then Inter secured another 3-0 victory at home to Zenit Saint Petersburg, but Real Madrid’s came away to Brøndby. Arsenal drew 2-2 at Porto while Barcelona failed to win again, 1-1 at home to Bordeaux. Palermo did the same with Benfica. In the Europa League, Lord Weeman’s Napoli beat Lokomotiv Moscow before winning 2-1 at Auxerre, and Leo Dodge’s Tottenham won 3-1 at Aris and then scraped a narrow 1-0 away victory against CSKA Moscow.

Over to England now: first, the Championship. With his side in 15th place despite having only just come down from the Premier League, Bolton manager Neppo Monster got the sack, with Bob Bradley coming in as replacement. Brettney Joven’s West Ham lead the way in the Championship with James Ridley’s Crystal Palace in second place. Up into the Premier League now, where Tom Smith’s Arsenal still lead the way, despite having lost this month. They beat Stoke, Newcastle and Birmingham, but it was Leo Dodge’s Tottenham who beat them. That was one of three wins for Spurs this month, but they also suffered two defeat, setting them back in 10th place. Meanwhile, Liam Ferguson’s Man City won all of their games without conceding a goal. First Tim Aubel’s Portsmouth were beaten 3-0 at Fratton Park, then visitors Newcastle were defeated 2-0 and visitors Everton 3-0. A trip to Leeds saw a 1-0 victory, and the visit of Stoke to the City of Mancheter Stadium saw the hosts run out 5-0 winners. A good month all round for Ferguson, with his two Champions League victories to boot.

Well, in general some poor performances. Maybe it’s an omen. None of our managers are presently in danger, but there’s no room for complacency. Ever.

Manager of the Update

Well, there’s no doubt here.

Liam Ferguson, Man City

is the clear victor this month. He was the light shining through the grey overcast sky. Five wins out of five without a goal conceded, as well as two wins in the Champions League – you can’t ask for much more than that. Both Tyler Burrows and Tom Smith also get a mention – hi! – for remaining top of their respective leagues, but they were nowhere near Ferguson’s calibre this month.

Update 77

Years: 6, Months: 77, Days: 2337

It’s been a busy month for chairmen, who were sacking managers like there’s no tomorrow, but credibly, all 11 of our managers were able to keep a hold of their jobs. If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, and – which is more – you’ll be a man, my son!

It looks like it has all slipped through Tyler Burrows’s fingers in Italy. The Udinese manager now has his team down in a lowly sixth place, rather than the top spot he had been enjoying for a while. Wins against Reggina and Mantova were overshadowed by losses to A.C. Milan and Napoli, and the latter, under the control of Lord Weeman, beat them 3-0. Napoli are now top, having conceded the second-fewest goals in the league. They beat Juventus, Palermo and, of course, Udinese, at home, and got 1-0 away wins over both Reggina and A.C. Milan. They also beat Ajax 2-1 to put them top of their Europa League group. Meanwhile, Ben Cee’s Inter are just one point behind them in second place, also having won all their games this month, but having played one fewer than Napoli. Genoa were beaten 5-3 away and Livorno 5-2 away, although Zenit Saint Petersburg offered resistance in Russia as the two teams drew 2-2. Inter’s other Champions League group stage game saw them beat visitors Fenerbahçe 2-0 and secure qualification alongside sc Heerenveen.

In England, Tom Smith’s Arsenal still top the Premier League but have had an absolutely torrid month. Well, wins over Man United and Chelsea, who both sacked their managers later in the month, make the month quite a bit sweeter, but the Gunners suffered twice as many defeats this month as they had done all season, and have now lost as many games as they did last season. Following those two results, a trip to Anfield saw Cool Manager’s Liverpool win 2-0, and although the Gunners won 2-0 over visiting Middlesbrough, a trip to the Circle saw Hull run out 1-0 winners. On the plus side, embarrassment was just about avoided in the Carling Cup Fourth Round, with Wolves’ resistance to claim a 1-1 draw futile, as Arsenal won on penalties to set up a Quarter Final tie with Blackburn. They also beat Porto 4-1 and Basel 4-0 in the Champions League this month, securing their progression to the later stages. Liam Ferguson’s Man City are Arsenal’s chasers, lying just one point behind the Gunners. They also lost at Anfield in November, but won all other games, including a 3-0 victory at White Hart Lane and a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford, one that saw Manchester United sack José Mourinho and install World Cup winning manager Vicente del Bosque as his successor. City lost out on penalties in the Carling Cup, which is a shame, as they instead would have met Arsenal if they could have beaten Blackburn. A 7-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade saw Ferguson’s team qualify for the Champions League Round of 16 despite a 1-2 loss in Valencia.

Speaking of Valencia, let’s move over to Spain, where Rafa Benítez’s side are drifting out of competition for a Champions League spot, and are currently sixth. Zaragoza lead the way, but only hold a slender three-point lead over Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid and Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona. This month, Real Madrid won all but one of their games, at home to rivals Atlético. That was a 0-0 draw, but Volman’s side beat Athletic, Mallorca and Recreativo, as well as winning 1-0 at Barcelona. Universidad LP were beaten 2-0 for a 5-0 aggregate victory, and Brøndby were beaten 9-0 and Benfica 2-0 in the Champions League. Barcelona also racked up some impressive results: beating Villarreal 4-1 and Sporting 5-1 towards the end of the month. They also won at Bordeaux and drew at Old Trafford in order to secure their Champions League progress, and beat Huesca 2-1 for a 5-2 aggregate victory. That Real Madrid match, however, will long play on the minds of the fans. Elsewhere in Spain, Racing sacked their manager Lars Tommersen after just under a year at the club.

Now to conclude with Europe, looking at some of the results I haven’t already covered. Mikey Twigge’s Palermo won 2-1 at Benfica in the Champions League. They then went on to draw 1-1 at Brøndby to seal their qualification from Group D. They’ll be hoping for European success to placate the fans who are unhappy with the current league position: 11th in Serie A. dafuge’s Besiktas lost to visitors A.C. Milan and drew with Celtic when the Scots came to play in Turkey. They travel to Germany next to battle it out with Hertha BSC for a Europa League place, given that both A.C. and Celtic have qualified for the Last 16. A draw would be good enough for dafuge’s side to make it into the secondary competition. Fiorentina beat Panathanaikos 2-0 and Liverpool 2-1 at home this month to qualify them first from Group G, with Liverpool looking likely to take second place. That is one of only two next round competitors undecided. Liverpool or Feyenoord and Porto or Werder Bremen will join the 14 teams that have already made the next round.

The Europa League has half that, seven, teams already in the next round, and one of those is Leo Dodge’s Tottenham. This month, they beat BATE 2-0 in Belarus to secure their progress. With their indifferent league form – eight points collected from a possible fifteen this month, Spurs will be looking for success in the cups this season. As well as the Europa League progress, they beat Championship leaders Brettney Joven’s West Ham 4-1 in the Carling Cup to set up a Quarter Final with Sunderland. Chelsea are the other English side to have secured progression, but despite this, Lawrence Lazewski finds himself out of a job. The American manager took his team to victory in Romania over CFR Cluj this month, 4-2, but consecutive losses to Arsenal and Hull, leaving the club 12th in the Premier League, meant the end of the line for him after 1059 days at the club. He fell short of his record time at Valencia by 200 days, but just under three years at Chelsea is not a bad achievement.

So, there was plenty of blood spilt this month, which is bad news for my beige carpeting. Who’s to say that there won’t be more next month, and that some of it won’t be that of one of our managers?

Manager of the Update

There were some good performances all round this month, but;

Lucas Volman, Real Madrid

gets this award. Other than a 0-0 draw against Atlético Madrid, they won all their games without conceding a goal, including the 9-0 demolition of Brøndby. Lord Weeman at Napoli was the obvious rival to Volman for the award, having won every game this month, a feat also accomplished by Ben Cee, domestically at least. Liam Ferguson’s 7-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade was one to savour, and was part of a good month for the Man City boss, but Volman taking his club back into contention for the La Liga title after a fifth-placed finish last year has got to be worth something. And it is! The Manager of the Month award for November 2014.

Update 78

Years: 6, Months: 78, Days: 2368

This month has been yet another filled with sackings, but once again all of our managers have avoided the bullet. Only two firings and one hiring were of interest, one of the firings being Jellybean Man’s dismissal from Mallorca, five days short of being at the club for 1000 days, and the hiring being José Mourinho’s appointment at Valencia so soon after his sacking from Manchester United. He replaces Rafa Benítez who was sacked, and the Portuguese manager will need to be working towards Champions League qualification at the very least.

We’ll start in England, where another loss has seen Arsenal relinquish control of the top spot in the Premier League. Tom Smith’s side looked all set to have a decent if not great month, with wins over Sunderland and Ipswich and a draw against Blackburn, a team they beat 3-0 in the Carling Cup Quarter Final. However, a 1-2 defeat at the Hawthorns allowed Liam Ferguson’s Man City to seize the top spot on goal difference. City beat Middlesbrough 5-0 and Ipswich 2-0, but only got 1-1 draws hosting Sunderland and visiting Hull. If they had had a bit more luck and tenacity, they could have been four points clear at this moment in time. West Brom were not just Arsenal’s victors: they also beat the Gunners’ North London rivals Tottenham when Leo Dodge brought his side to the Hawthorns, that being one of Dodge’s two away losses in December. They also fell 0-1 at Elland Road, yet a third away loss came in the Carling Cup when Sunderland beat Spurs 2-1. However, Dodge won his team’s two home games with ease: 3-0 over Stoke and 3-1 over Birmingham, and moved up two places in the league to 7th.

In Spain, Zaragoza still lead the way by a narrow margin, although Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona have the chance to change all that in their home game in hand against the leaders next month. Yet in December, the Catalonian team won all three games, two of which were away. Osasuna were beaten 4-1 and Tenerife 3-0, both actually more impressive than Barca’s home game, which was a 2-0 victory over Deportivo. Meanwhile, Lucas Volman’s Real Madrid travelled to Ghana for the Club World Championship. They won 6-0 against Oceania’s entrant, Adelaide United, to make the final, and then beat North America’s América (MEX) 3-1 to retain the title for the third year running. During this, Volman’s side also won two league games, 4-0 over Murcia and 4-1 over Racing, and they did well to gain a 3-3 draw in their trip to Zaragoza for a fiercly contested league game at the end of the month. They lie three points behind Zaragoza, and Zaragoza of course have that game in hand, but Real have built up a seven-point lead over fifth place, which should help to ensure that they won’t need to win the Champions League again to qualify for it.

Speaking of the Champions League, let’s take a foray into Europe for a look at this month’s results. Inter won 1-0 at sc Heerenveen, and Barcelona beat their visitors Rangers 2-0. Arsenal beat Werder Bremen 2-1, allowing Porto to qualify with their 3-2 victory over Basel, and Palermo and Real Madrid came to a 1-1 draw in Italy. Ben Taylor’s Fiorentina beat Feyenoord 4-2 in the Netherlands, ensuring that Liverpool would qualify (their 5-0 victory over Panathanaikos double that insurance). Man City beat Sparta Prague 3-0, and Hertha BSC drew 1-1 with Besiktas, sending dafuge’s side into the Europa League and the Germans out of all European competition. In the Europa League this month, Napoli won 1-0 at Lokomotiv Moscow and 3-0 hosting Auxerre sending them through alongside Ajax. Leo Dodge’s Tottenham beat Aris Thessalonika 7-0, and then CSKA Moscow 2-0, to ensure they topped the group with a perfect record but for one goal conceded.

In the Last 32 of the Europa League, there are plenty of interesting ties, one of which is Tottenham against Ajax. Meanwhile, Martin Bojangles’s Aston Villa will play Getafe, Robert Boyle’s Newcastle will play CSKA Moscow, Napoli will play Sporting CP and Maz Armley’s Sevilla will play AS Monaco. dafuge's Besiktas will face Spanish leaders Zaragoza, which may well be the end of the line for his team, but we will see. In the Last 16, Napoli or Sporting CP will meet Aston Villa or Getafe and Tottenham or Ajax will meet Hamburger SV or Zenit Saint Petersburg. In the Champions League draw, the most interesting tie is a repeat of this year’s real life Semi Final; Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona will be playing Ben Cee’s Inter. That’s one of two matches involving two of our managers: Palermo and Arsenal will also face each other. Real Madrid have Shakhtar Donetsk to contend with, Man City have sc Heerenveen and Fiorentina have Porto. Cool Manager’s Liverpool face Marco van Basten’s A.C. Milan in another big name tie, while Man United face Celtic in a Battle of Britain.

It’s time to conclude the report with a trip to Italy. Once again the league leader has changed, and it is currently Ben Cee’s Inter. They won the first three of their four games this month with increasing scorelines, culminating in a 3-0 victory over rivals A.C. Milan. However, what followed was a defeat of the same scoreline away to Arsène Wenger’s Juventus. Lord Weeman’s Napoli fell to second despite a good month, beating Sampdoria and Frosinone and drawing with Mantova. At Fiorentina, Ben Taylor guided his team to three wins out of three this month, steering him away from the slight danger he faced as a manager at the end of November. Brescia, Lazio and Genoa were beaten, with the scorelines doubling each time: 1-0, 2-0 and 4-0 respectively. Down in 13th place, James Salter’s Reggina picked up two points from a maximum of nine, at home to Sampdoria and Torino. They are six points behind 12th place, a plummeting Palermo who were unable to win this month, placing their manager in some trouble.

Our Italian sides also played in the Coppa Italia, save for Reggina who were earlier knocked out by Genoa. Udinese thrashed Atalanta 5-0, as did Juventus to Bologna. Napoli went out on penalties after a 0-0 draw at home to Frosinone, but for Palermo penalties were welcomed, and were used to knock out Livorno following a 1-1 draw. Inter beat Mantova 3-0 and Fiorentina beat Torino 2-1. A.C. Milan and Lazio will also feature in the Quarter Final, whose biggest tie for us is Udinese against Inter. In other cup news, the draw for the FA Cup Third Round has been made, and all of our teams are at home. Man City will host Stoke, Tottenham will host Watford and Arsenal will host Swansea, like they did in 2012.

It’s getting towards crunch time. The transfer window is soon to reopen and if we are going to have a sacking this season, it will be coming soon. Managers drift in and out of danger, but one of these days a manager has to get into so much danger that it is inescapable. How about one who last year qualified for the Champions League but is currently struggling to break into the top half?

Manager of the Update

There were quite a few candidates this month.

Ben Taylor, Fiorentina

gets the award. He won all of his games in the league, and won both cup games thrown at him. Lucas Volman won the Club World Championship for his side, but that becomes less and less remarkable each year. Haowan Madridstas and Lord Weeman also had good months, and Liam Ferguson did well, but these three were all unable to stop Taylor winning it.

Years: 6, Months: 79, Days: 2399

The managers are just one day short of their 2400th day at the club, and all have survived this month despite there being a number of sackings elsewhere. The amount of dismissals, however, is down from last month, so it looks like the trend is heading downwards for the rest of the season – can all of our managers make it to the seven year mark?

We’ll start in England where the yo-yoing back-and-forth title race continues. Tom Smith’s Arsenal are back on top, although Manchester City hold a game in hand over the London club. Liam Ferguson’s side won the encounter between the two sides 4-2 to open the month, but they weren’t able to stop the Gunners winning every other game, including a 5-0 victory over Portsmouth. Arsenal also made their way through two cup competitions in style, beating Sunderland 8-2 on aggregate in the Carling Cup Semi Final, with a 3-1 victory at the Stadium of Light, and beating Swansea 3-0 at home in the FA Cup Third Round, and Chesterfield 6-1 at home in the Fourth Round. City’s cup adventure saw them fail to beat Blackburn in the Fourth Round following their 2-0 victory over Stoke, but a replay at the City of Manchester Stadium should swing things Ferguson’s way. Aside from a goalless draw at Villa Park, all league games were one, with the team accumulating ten points this month. Meanwhile, Tottenham are struggling on in 8th place, but did have a very difficult month this month. A 9-1 victory over Watford opened the month to achieve cup progression for Leo Dodge’s side, and promising a good January and a good start to 2015. Draws at Old Trafford and Anfield were good results, although Chelsea narrowly beat Spurs at White Hart Lane. Tottenham also beat Middlesbrough and Hull both by one goal margins, and got into the FA Cup Fifth Round by beating Aston Villa 1-0. Tottenham have a good shot at the Quarter Final with a tie against Championship derby, while Arsenal face Hull or Middlesbrough and Man City or Blackburn face Sheffield Wednesday or Fulham, with both of our teams being at home no matter which combination occurs.

The season looks to be heading towards the same old conclusion in Italy, and that conclusion is Inter winning the title. Ben Cee’s team have carved out a five point lead over Napoli after a good month. Lord Weeman’s team had the chance to change things, but their home tie against Inter ended goalless this month. Reggina, Udinese and Frosinone were beaten by Inter this month, while Napoli beat Pisa 4-1 but drew with Roma and Torino. Tyler Burrows’s Udinese are enjoying their current fourth place position but still have plenty of work to do to keep that Champions League place come the end of the season. They beat Torino, Pisa, and even Fiorentina this month, but of course lost that Inter game as well as losing at Atalanta. Our Italian teams also took part in the Coppa Italia Quarter Final this month. A.C. Milan beat Palermo 2-0 while Inter won 2-1 at Udinese thanks to extra time. Lazio and Fiorentina were locked goalless at the ninety minute mark, but Jonte Rhodes’s former club excelled into a two goal lead in extra time, sending Fiorentina out. Arsène Wenger’s Juventus beat Frosinone 3-1. It’s a local derby in the Semi Final as A.C. Milan play Inter. Meanwhile, Theo Stigarakis got back into management this month with a job at Serie B Empoli. He started with a loss and a win, putting his team 12th in the table.

Of course, this being January, there were plenty of transfers to talk about. Lord Weeman’s Napoli raised some funds with two major outgoing transfers. Stéphane Mbia left to join A.C. Milan for £20.5M and Mauro Zárate left to join Chelsea for £16.75M. A small portion of this profit was spent on new players: Weeman bought Andrea Russotto from Lazio for £6.25M and Andrea Spuntarelli from Modena for £3.5M. Liam Ferguson’s Man City also made some money, selling Turkish attacking midfielder Arda Turan to Atlético Madrid for £12.25M, Simon Vukcevic also to Atlético Madrid for £10.25M, and Rafael van der Vaart to Arsenal for £8.75M. City’s big transfer was the signing of 32-year-old Kaká from Valencia for £15M. In what is evidently a clear-out under a new manager, Ricardo Faty also left Valencia to join Fiorentina for £6.75M. Two of our Italian teams made plenty of little move this month. Tyler Burrows’s Udinese were one: they sold Zoran Tosic to Juventus for £12.75M, buying Juan Surraco from Theo Stigarakis’s Empoli for £5.75M, Ciprian Marica from West Brom for £5.25M and Magnus Troest from Reggina for £3.9M. James Salter’s side also sold Giuliano to Juventus for £9.25M and Raffaele Palladino to Mantova for £3.8M, and bought both Arturo De Falco from Bari for £2.2M and Claudio Criniti for £2.1M from Triestina. Tottenham and Sunderland were talking to each other for quite a bit this month, with Spurs buying Sunderland’s Adam Lallana for £16M and the Black Cats buying Tottenham’s Tomasz Kuszczak for £2.1M. And in one of the biggest transfers of the month, Haowan Madridstas’s Barcelona bought Alexis Sánchez from Vicente del Bosque’s Man United for £19.5M.

That signing is intended to help the Catalonians chase down Zaragoza at the top of La Liga. Their match against the leaders was postponed, presumably due to the Copa del Rey, so they still have the advantage although Zaragoza now have a game in hand. This month, however, didn’t represent a great one for that title pursuit, as it opened with a loss to Getafe. A 5-0 win over Elche followed, and then wins over Valencia and Athletic before January ended with a 1-1 draw at Atlético Madrid. Barcelona also went out of the Copa del Rey to Maz Armley’s Sevilla. A 3-2 away victory stood them in good stead, but they capitulated in the return match to lose 0-2. As for Lucas Volman’s third-placed Real Madrid, they also lost to Sevilla this month, but in a less important league game. Like Barca, that was their first game of the month resulting in a loss. They followed that with two 3-0 wins and a 2-0 win, while faring much better in the cup. They beat Osasuna 1-0 at home and quadrupled the aggregate with a 3-0 victory in the away leg, and sealed a Semi Final place with another 1-0 home victory, this time at home to Barcelona’s league conquerors Getafe, and a subsequent 4-1 away victory. Armley’s team await in the Last Four, with the winner facing either Atlético Madrid or Valencia in the Final.

The Spanish league is still grabbing my interest: will Zaragoza end the Big Two retention of the title? But there is plenty of intrigue in the other leagues too. Arsenal are trying to retain the Premier League title; personally I think they can. And in Italy, while the league title will probably be going to Inter again, there is interest to be had into whether the two perennial troubled managers will finally drop off the scene.

Manager of the Update

There were a few good performances this month, but nobody was perfect.

Tom Smith, Arsenal

wins it in a rather tough decision. Despite losing to Man City in the first-versus-second match this month, he won all other games to keep the pressure on Liam Ferguson’s side, a manager who was also in contention this month. Arsenal also made their way forward in two competitions. Lucas Volman got Real Madrid through two rounds of the Spanish Cup, but that’s to be expected, and they also lost a league game. At Inter, Ben Cee is carving out a nice lead on the way to keeping the Serie A title.
