RyanBRFC
I have a player who is 22 but is playing in the U21 championships.. http://i40.tinypic.com/2zi25wi.jpg - How is this possible?
Neji
As long as the player is 21 or under on the registration date, then they are still eligible, I think.
shanks
This is possible because if i remember correctly, the age limit for U21 championships applies when the qualifying for that event took place. For example, if the player mentioned was 21 or even 20 when they began qualifying, he can still play even though he is 22 when the tournament actually takes place. Thats what i remember them saying on the TV EDIT: Damn it beaten to it!
RyanBRFC
Ahh I see.. Thanks for the info
arsenal_2111
Yep, the above are right. As long as a player is 21 or under when qualification for the tournament stats they can play in the actual tournament. That's why Steven Taylor, 23, is in this years squad for the U-21 Championships. There are a couple of other examples in the England team too - Agbonlahor being one (aged 22).
small Mac
Yeah thats right. James Milner is another one - they were talking about the age thing earlier on sky sports news

baker.simon
I believe under 19 teams are allowed two over 19's in their squad? Yes, thats how Owen Coyle still gets to play in the under-19 matches with Burnley.
SCIAG
I don't think there are u19 teams in England. I've only heard of Coyle playing for the reserves. For the international under 21s, Neji is spot on.
alimac
Doesnt it tell you this under the "Rules" tab?
lawsie
to sum it up, if a tournaments qualifications starts and they are 19 it could be 2 years later that the actual tournament starts, they can then be 22-23 years old. Also if any new compeitions start during that process the same rule applies. There are 3-4 cases of the current england u21 squad bein g over 22 years old atm. Ritari
Competition rules state a certain d.o.b. limit for a tournament. For this summer's U21 European Championships, all players born on 1.1.1986 or after are eligible. The next U21 tournament in 2011 has a limit of 1.1.1988 or later. This is applied to the other age groups as well with similar date of birth restrictions in place. The starting point for the age restriction is always the year the qualifications begin. These only affect international tournaments, club tournaments have their own rules, and in England, for instance, it is possible to have up to three over-aged players in the U18 league, if they meet the specific requirements set in the competition rules. The Olympics is a case of its own, it being an U23 tournament, but also having it's own three over-aged players rule, which is different from the one used in England. lawsie
they can actually one day after tournament qualification starts they are 20, 2 years down the line they could be 22 years old.
