  1. This is my first crack at a career save in quite some time. I'm playing in FM19, with the following countries loaded (all divisions): Belgium England France Germany Italy Netherlands Scotland Spain I decided I'd set up my manager as myself. My plan was to start unemployed, holiday until November in the first season as this tends to be when the sackings start coming thick and fast and so means more potential jobs to apply for. I set myself with a reputation of Professional Footballer (National Level).
  2. The Premiss I enjoy playing with limitations, the limitation in this career update will be to make every decision follow the logic of the fictional manager Mario Glorihunter. This post will be dedicated solely to his profile and will act as a reference to future choices. Career Mario was a international footballer for England and can best be described as a “fox in the box”, much like the Italian Luca Toni. He was strong, could finish with both feet and was always at the right spot to tap it in. Unlike most English footballers, Mario didn’t spend much of his career in England. He was adventures by nature and left England for Italy at the age of 17 after being scouted Parma. Mario became a bit of a journeyman in his career, playing for several Italian clubs, two years in Spain playing for Valencia, and ended his career in Argentina for River Plate. Because of his outspoken and controversial personality, Mario was wanted as a pundit for skysports when he hanged up his boots. Mario wanted to return to England, not as a pundit but as a manager. Middlesbrough Tony Pulis achieved promotion trough playoffs with Middlesbrough in 2018/19. Owner Steve Gibson appreciated the work Pulis had done and then made the bold move to fire him. Gibson wanted to raise the profile and marketability of the club, something which would not have been possible under Pulis. Mario managed to sell himself to Gibson and the board with his charisma, high ambitions and self-proclaimed tactical knowledge. Mario demanded to be able to have full control of transfers for the senior team and to hire an assistant manager of his choice. Mario as a manager: Tactics Despite claiming to be an astute tactician, Mario doesn’t have a philosophy or strong tactical knowledge. He believes winning is simply about having the best players, motivating them and giving them the freedom to perform. As far as tactics go, Mario simply copies bits and pieces from other teams and managers. Mario does, however, have a few preferences, like playing with a striker much similar to himself (a strong striker with the intelligence and finishing ability of a poacher), and using lots of technical players as he was accustomed to playing with during his days in Italy, Spain and Argentina. Mario prefers to use his strongest XI whenever possible as they have the highest chance of winning. The XI knows who they are and the rest will have to accept not being among them. Player recruitment One thing Mario does not want is anonymous transfers. He values players that can bring headlines when they arrive, players with international experience, with exotic names. Mario could easily be the type of manager to buy an international player based on his performance in the World Cup, totally disregarding club performances. Eastern European players was a thing to avoid in most cases, they just weren’t fashionable in his eyes. While not being particularly interested in young players, Mario can make exceptions if a young player is often mentioned in the media. Training Development of players isn’t something Mario gets involved with. He is satisfied with leaving it up to his coaching team, Mario is more of a big picture guy. Mario does have his coaching badges, he just has no interest in improving in this area as his past player experience is more than enough to get jobs. Finances The only things Mario cares about when it comes to money is how much he gets to spend. He has no concerns about overspending on transfers or wages, it’s simply not his job. He is there to win football matches, and he needs the right players to do so, no matter the cost. If he doesn't get the resources he thinks he needs, he might leak it to the press. Media Mario enjoys talking to the press, sending sly remarks to other managers and teams. He is very loyal to his own players in the media, often praising them and disregarding criticism that comes their way. Mario will not tolerate anyone that publicly questions his competence, Mario is never the cause of a problem, he is the solution. To not be blamed, Mario can without hesitation throw someone else under the bus. Hierarchy The manager sits at the top and if you challenge him you will regret it. This is how Mario wants to rule his squad, players need to be loyal, otherwise, they have the choice to leave. Likewise, a loyal player can expect to be rewarded with more playing time and new contracts, given that they also perform of course. Ambitions Mario doesn’t have ambitions for the club as much as he has ambitions for himself. He is only interested in short term results to bolster his own achievements. Clubs can change the manager several times per season, so Mario sees no reason to care about long term goals. His own ambition is to manage is favourite club Real Madrid.
  3. This is the first game of Football Manager 2019 that I've played (I got the game at Christmas) and I'm playing with a friend, who swapped Middlesbrough into the Premier League in the place of Huddersfield. I've played FM18 a bit and did a similar save over the summer with more success. However, with a slightly different squad and different signings, tactics and opposition, I've encountered significantly more problems. My team generally creates a lot of chances and I have one of the highest chances / game ratios in the league. I made significantly more attacking signings than defensive signings but this is a defence that conceded less than 1 a game over the first 20 in the Championship this real-life season, so I figured that it shouldn't be too leaky. Attack wise, I brought in Josh King for £20m and Collin Quaner for £8m who are good goalscorers yet appear to be missing lots and lots of chances. At the back I signed Bilbao's Inigo Lekue who has proved extremely useful in an attacking WB spot, but not so well defensively. Otherwise, I signed winger Georges-Kévin Nkoudou for LW and Michel Vorm for GK. This has left me with 5 points from a possible 39. I've attached the tactic I used, a 5-4-1 formation with relatively attacking wing-backs. Originally, I was using a lot of different tactics, foolishly trying to desperately find a system that worked and I ended up shipping a lot of goals. However, following back-to-back points against the top 6 I was feeling hopeful. Sadly, in the next few games the 4-2-4 system I was using failed against more level opponents as I was creating very little. I've stuck to the attached system after my performances have improved but I still cannot pick up any points. I've tried moving about my line of engagement but if I bring it too far down, I cannot score a goal but if I put it further up, opposition AMs roam freely in the gap. My team has been saddled with injuries but I strongly believe nothing would have changed if they'd been fit. Is there any way I should tweak my tactics, completely overhaul them or just persevere with what I've got? Should I be playing more defensively or more attacking i.e. play to my strengths or protect my weaknesses? Were my signings a poor decision and who should I look at in the January transfer window (the date is 28th November).
  4. Karanka has decided to leave Boro for China, Many assumed he'd reject any advances to guide Boro in the 1st Season back in The Premier League after guiding the club to promotion last season though Karanka has said an opportunity like this is tough to turn down and must think about his family in this situation. Karanka is said to be sadden to leave the club but wishes them the best for the future. It is rumoured the club could replace Karanka with former player & current U-18 Manager Tom Hosking. If the former England international becomes the clubs latest manager he will be the youngest manager in Europe at just 26.
  5. In 2nd Season with Boro, had a good 1st season finishing 10th. Looking to sign a GK, DR & ST, any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. GK TARGETS- I have Valdes & signed Scuffet for cheap but looking for a no.1 Gk G RULLI- Soceidad were relegated so can sign for 9 mil.M PERRIN- Had a bid of 8 mil accepted, potentially world class just unsure about him. T HORN- Kolne want 10 mil as he has no release clause any more but know hes quality.J PICKFORD- Sunderland only want 4 mil, think If I started him he'd develop really well. DR TARGETS- Chambers loan expired, sold Baragan, have loaned Nacho from Real as cover and Sergio Palencia. C CHAMBERS- Still think I can get him on loan again but may have to wait for the Prem to start. K TRIPPIER- Can get him for around 7 mil but again may nee to wait for him not to be playing.L KLOSTERMAN- 6 mil will secure the youngster but not sure if hes ready.... J FLANAGAN- Liverpool will sell for 3.5mil could develop well or be a back up. ST TARGETS- Loaned Kuki out, have Rhodes, Bamford & Pohlapojo, need a 20 goal a season player.K BABACAR- Had a 8 mil bid accepted but the more I look at him he looks average.M BATSUAYI- Can get on loan, could be a good option with the other strikers I have.W BONY- Similar to Batsuayi but was poor for Stoke last year not as mobile.S TSHARAJ- The everton man is back at the club and available for 7.5 mil but loos better than he probably is. J GUIDETTI- Vigo want 9 mil but again looks better than he proabbnly is.
