Hey all, Know there's a lot of feedback about the current ME 1627 and I know a lot of you are playing the game in your own time and surely have opinions too; For the most part I thought the original beta engine was a good step forward over 19.2.3 and then we've had a few regressive steps, but overall i'm finding that you can still play good/attractive football, but the 'fixed' player instructions are really hampering your options when it comes to getting around some of the more defensive sides - it's making the inverse of what you should expect when looking at the fixtures; I look forward to playing the big teams and dread when the bottom ranked clubs are coming up because i know i'm going to be up against it just to score. I accept that there's an air of realism about that - Klopp struggled in his first few years with Liverpool at that - but then it shouldn't be that i can rip Chelsea and United apart quite so easily? Irrespective of realism and getting back to the game, I actually feel like our hands are tied to a certain degree with regard to overcoming the 'bus' or opposition systems because of the restrictions imposed by the roles/tactics creator - currently testing by playing away against a dogged Blackburn side. We're heavy favourites and they're using a 442 which i know is one of the hardest buses to crack in this version, problem is that one of the key ways i'd love to break their system down - namely by using width - is seriously flawed. What i'd like to do is have players sit wide so we can cycle possession around the edge of the box - essentially probing until such time we can draw out/overload/exploit the defence, problem is that each of the wide roles has a certain PI that makes this incredibly difficult to achieve; The winger would be ideal for this idea, however with 'cross more often' fixed on along with 'dribble more', you've got a guy who gets the ball and headless chickens either into defenders or just lumps the ball straight into the box, irrespective of shorter/available FB/CM/STC options. The stay wider is also an issue, but i'll touch on that in more detail afterwards. Inside forward is the other natural option, but whereas we don't have the issue with continual crossing, we do still have the issue with dribbling, and even worse, they now run headfirst into a clogged up centre of the pitch. I appreciate the players have some intelligence and sometimes they will play the ball, but far too often they perform the same mistakes? Trequartista & Raumdeuter unfortunately suffer from the same problem, namely 'roam from position' - don't get me wrong, i love roam from position in some instances, however here it's not wanted because I really want them to stay put or to hold their position. Out of all the positions, WTM is possibly the closest to what I'm after in terms of actual PI's - but now that the target man settings seem to be under the hood, does this mean they'll be designated as such and players will attempt to hit them with longer balls etc? That's not super awesome for a short but incredibly quick/skillful wide player if so? Overall what I really want is an 'Outside forward' I guess, but whereas we could create that on FM's of old, we can't any more and I think it's exacerbating some of the issues because we can't as creatively circumvent them. I understand why the PI's were added to the roles, to help newer players/players struggling to formulate a tactic, but is it possible we can have the 'fixed/locked' part of them changed to optional - even have them set as default - so a user can override them as needed? Maybe even as atrial in the beta itself - obviously i have no idea how (un)complicated that is but think it would make our (the players) world a much better place? In terms of overriding player instructions, I can tell my team to run less with the ball, but i don't want to do that and impact on other players elsewhere - surely player instructions should be used to override TI's, not the other way around? Even then, with run less and work ball into the box, the number of dribbles and crosses attempted by wingers is still really high - dropping mentality helps to a small degree, but not to any real/appreciable effect. The other issue I alluded to above is the way wingers and other wide players actually stay wide - I've been playing with this in the current test game and irrespective of what I try the AML/AMR will both continually tuck inside when our CM's are in possession, almost as if they're marking the opposition FB's; The guys marked in red here are the wingers - both are set to stay wide, with team width at the widest in this example. I understand why the AMR may tuck a little, but he's almost playing as an STR/IF at this point - he's in a support role and not set to get further forward, but I can't turn his individual mentality down further to tell him to hang back - surely stay wider should mean he pulls just a little more towards the edge of the box? I'm not saying he should be hugging the touchline (i'd kick him if he was), but play is so compacted (and i know the 3d engine is an approximation) that it's no wonder creativity is stifled? Next example, in the approach play, I've set 'hold position' on the two and the wingers are in decent positions here (Francoaldo is the AML) and we're looking good; As the ball is moved through midfield however, the FB's come up a little which seems to cue the wingers to immediately cut inside and go narrow; Net result is that the MC plays an overly ambitious ball to the FB who first time crosses it straight to the GK and the winger is bypassed yet again - neither the winger or FB are set to 'get further forward' nor do they have that trait. Just a few seconds after the GK's kick, we win back possession, and again we're playing very narrow; As the move develops, again the wingers stay incredibly narrow - it's almost like they believe we have overlap turned on or the FB's are set too attacking as if that were the case, their position would make much more sense. Predicting the inevitable AI counter, that is not the behaviour I want and in fact I'm actually really comfortable with my FB's (blue) positioning here IF the winger (red) was where i wanted them to be; it just seems incredibly difficult with the current settings available to get the wingers to play a naturally wide game with the FB's - or even IWBs - supporting, which is exacerbating the defensive issues; Looking at a lot of these screens, it looks a little as if the wingers are actually playing more like Inside forwards? Naturally mentality is also playing a part here with trying to find the sweet spot between being too attacking/too passive, but again, we've now lost the ability to override mentality for specific players who aren't quite playing/acting where/how we'd like them to be - I appreciate that removing some of our control may have been done for balance, but I actually think it's backfiring here a little? And I want to stress that I'm not saying winning is impossible - far from it - just that we're hitting unnecessary brick walls which is making it much harder (note the scores against top teams vs bottom); Appreciate this could be filed under 'feature request', but as creativity is so pretty stifled and it wasn't as big an issue in 19.2.3 I thought it worthwhile posting here to see if you/the dev experts might agree and if there's something can be done as part of the beta to help remedy some of this? There's potentially more tactical combos I haven't tried yet (and lord knows i will keep at it) to try and get around this issue, but surely it shouldn't be this hard to get a winger to sit out nearer the touchline during a build-up phase?
