PGC: Jumpers for Goalposts (FM 2018)

Scotland for FM 2018 The PGC takes it's next step in it's European Adventures, as we move across the border into the harsh winters of the north. We begin our adventures in the Scottish pyramid with all members starting in League 2, in what promises to be an exciting (all be it a predictably slow) maiden season. With only semi-professional clubs available to pick from, expect facilities to match the weather. Interested in joining? If you are interested in joining our network game you can message FFCStu1428, or apply using the application form on our website. The game is played Monday through Wednesday every week, from 1900UK to 2300UK. Make sure you familiarise yourself with our game rules. Boring stuff, yes, but not long-winded and essential reading. Good luck, and even if you are not part of our game, enjoy our thread!

  3. Welcome to Exeter City Football Club! First and foremost thank you for clicking on this thread where I will be documenting my career with Devon outfit Exeter City who play in England's fourth tier - Sky Bet League 2. As you can probably tell by the fantastic title of the thread, I had little idea what to name it so I will gladly take thread name suggestions! This will be my first 'career update thread' but I have read a few others that have tempted me into doing my own but have also given me inspiration into how to layout the thread and so on. I purely play the game for enjoyment and have done for many years so don't expect a mastermind and don't expect me to win every single game, there will be a lot of struggle documented here I'm sure. Why Exeter? I am very much a fan of the lower leagues. As you can see by my profile picture, (I believe that's what we call it round here, correct me if I'm wrong!) I support Barrow AFC who play in the league below Exeter, in the National League. I attend every home fixture and also try and travel to away games when I and other people are available to and so I tend to enjoy watching this level of football compared to the Premier League, for example. I stumbled across a thread in the 'Good Player & Team Guide' forum which is dedicated to the Football League and I scrolled through reading all the information given by the creator and all the updates within that thread which made me want to join in. The idea to document my career here ultimately came from there, truthfully. Out of all the teams available to me, I narrowed it down to a select few. Accrington Stanley are one of my favourite sides, purely down to the way the club are viewed and just how modest of a club they are and so were on the list alongside Exeter, Notts County and Crawley. I decided against County due to them being a 'bigger club,' historically anyway. I decided against Crawley because I simply disliked them when they were in the Conference, as petty as it sounds and finally I went against Accrington as the ratings of some of the players bothered me too much, for example Erico Sousa was rated higher than a large majority of the team. What drew me to Exeter was the fantastic campaign they had in the 2016/17 season. The club finished 5th and so occupied one of the playoff places and so would play 6th placed Carlisle United in the Semi Finals. If you watched the playoffs, you knew the drama was high with the first leg finishing Carlisle 3-3 Exeter. The second leg was just as exciting as Exeter went 2-0 up with 10 minutes to go to surely wrap up the tie. However Carlisle pulled one back in the 82nd minute and would equalise in the 90th minute to level the game - away goal doesn't exist within the playoffs. But with the last kick of the game, Jack Stacey would step up and convert in the 95th minute, setting up a trip to Wembley against Blackpool - where they also scored with seconds to go to preveil over Luton. Ultimately Blackpool would win on the grand stage despite David Wheeler equalising just before the break after an early Brad Potts goal, Marc Cullen scoring the historic goal to win the Tangerines the game. So, Exeter have a young squad with exciting winger Ollie Watkins being a standout player for the Grecians in real life and also in-game. Players such as Jack Stacey, on loan from Reading and David Wheeler are also huge assets to the club. You will be able to see the squad in more detail below... Squad and Depth We have two goalkeepers at the club who are both very able and could both, arguably, feature. However our first choice will be the older Bobby Olejnik but Christy Pym will definitely be given game time at some point this season. Jordan Moore-Taylor, Troy Brown and Troy Archibald-Henville were all injured before I started the save but have all returned to fitness mid-August (when I have taken the screenshots) and so Luke Croll and Pierce Sweeney were originally the duo at the heart of the defence however I intend on rotating between Croll and Moore-Taylor alongside Sweeney over the duration of the season. Callum Jones, Joshua Emmanuel and Matty Foulds have all been brought in on loan by myself from West Brom, Ipswich and Everton respectively until the end of the season to compensate for the injury issues we have in the full-back department. Craig Woodman is out until October and Connor Riley-Lowe simply isn't ready just yet for regular football. Expect Emmanuel and Foulds to be the two full-backs this season. We only have a trio of out and out central midfielders for the season. Oakley won't feature much and instead will be used to tutor young players whereas James and Lecygne, another player I loaned in, this time from Stoke, will be the two midfielders. The wide areas are definitely the place where Exeter excel, with a bundle of exciting players on either flank. Holmes will be out until October with injury, David Wheeler and Jack Stacey are the two options for us available and will rotate, with Holmes adding to the rotation when he returns. On the left we have Ollie Watkins who was the standout player as mentioned in real life for Exeter, Joel Grant who is another player originally on the injury list but has just returned (20th August) and also Thomas Grant, no relation to Joel, who was brought in for cover. Watkins will, similarly to most positions, rotate with Joel Grant and Thomas Grant is there when needed. Behind the striker we have two very able options again - Ryan Harley and Jake Taylor. The latter will be the first choice ahead of the older Harley who will be an option on the bench for the majority of the season and will be used when needed. Finally we have the attackers, where it's a selection dilemma once again. Ryan Swan and Matt Jay will most likely be loaned out for the season to lower league clubs as they won't feature. The other three options, Simpson, Reid and McAlinden will all be fighting for the no.9 role. McAlinden will be the preferred choice, ahead of Simpson and Reid - I prefer Simpson as he is more able to play as a defensive forward than Reid who can only really play as a target man which isn't something I tend to use in my tactics. Tactics This is how we lined up in our most recent fixture against Accrington, the formation will most likely remain like this for the season with the mentality and instructions changing from time to time. Currently we are going with a 'counter' mentality and a 'structured' team shape. August Fixtures Thanks for reading the beginning to my career update with Exeter I hope to see you reading and interacting.
  4. WHY PLYMOUTH?? Plymouth Argyle are my local team as I am from near by Cornwall. It was the first team I went to a stadium to see, I was a season ticket holder for a couple of years when they were in The Championship which seems an age ago now though! The club has had a tough time of it since then suffering relegation's, financial issues etc but has stabilised the last couple of years and just missed out in the Play Offs last year. Many of you may only really know Plymouth from recently when they took Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool to an FA Cup replay. Still the biggest City team not to be in the top flight so hopefully I can get them back to The Championship or hopefully further in to The Premier League. On FM the squad is actually fairly decent as well for the league and Promotion should be our target, though wages are a bit tight I may have to release some players and bring in youth with re-sale value, or see if the board are willing to jiggle the budget slightly. I am hoping to style this story by posts such as this (talking to the reader) or by way of fictional News Stories, any questions or suggestions feel free to comment.
