  1. Hi All Why can I not find ANY youtube videos about the use of 4-3-1-2 in FM2019? Is this formation impossible to succeed with in FM2019? I can't find any evidence of other people using this formation successfully in FM2019 anywhere. Would be great to use it as a way to get both Aubameyanga nd Lacazette in the same team as well as Ozil for Arsenal...
  2. For the last three years of Football Manager I have tried to take Wick Academy to glory using only the players that start there and then youth players who come through the system. All that can be found https://community.sigames.com/topic/363758-these-weans-get-right-on-my-wick/ Here for FM16 https://community.sigames.com/topic/387793-fm17-the-wicker-man-reboot-or-arrgghhh-not-the-weans/ Here for the really rubbish FM17 version https://community.sigames.com/topic/418824-fm18-wick-face-to-face-with-the-manager-who-sold-the-weans/ And here for last year's version It's sad, so sad It's a sad, sad situation and it's getting more and absurd... So here we go again. Same ****, different year. Thanks to @Morrissey for his funky awesome Scottish database as usual and I will add no more as my intro to Wick in the 2016 thread sums it all up. TO HARMSWORTH ONCE MORE!
  3. What're most memorable screw-ups in your FM careers? Like signing a winger for 100M and later realize he'll break every month. #1 of all time for me is accidentally clicking "Push Forward" instead of "Concentrate" in CL final while leading 1-0 around 85 minute, we conceded soon after that and lost 1-2 in extra time. (Fingers Contol is a very important manager attribute) So far in FM19, it's not signing Lucas Torreira for 20M during the start of the 3rd season (I have no idea why Arsenal listed him for a half of market value). While I thought where's the catch, they increased asking price to 35.5M. ;-;
  4. Ventura's failure as a tactician and motivator for the Azzurri, resulted in the destruction of the dreams of millions. This is putting it lightly. Ventura utilized a 3-5-2 similar in the veins of Conte's tactics in Euro 2016, but without the discipline, compactness, and transition play. Clearly the level of opponent played a role in the difference between Conte's and Ventura's tactics, but it is difficult to forget Conte's disciplined 1-0 victory over Sweden in last year's Euro. With greater quality up top Italy found a way to squander possession by incessant crossing against a massively tall Swedish defense, while choosing to ignore their skill and technical advantage. Rather than play quick one twos and creating overloads, Ventura's buildup play involved Darmian and Candreva constantly dribbling down the flanks until they would send a wild, unaimed cross. Rather than forming a compact transition friendly shape, Immobile and Gabbiadini were isolated up top while the midfield were unstructured and disorganized in their attempts to create any logical plays. The only times in the game where there seemed to be any plan was when Jorginho or Bonucci began the buildup play. Bonucci would help with vertically aimed passes towards the forwards or a marauding Parolo, while Jorginho would play quicker,short passes aimed at getting the ball forward in a more narrow shape. Unfortunately, as time began to run out the methodological approach of Jorginho gave way to running down the wings and insane crosses. Thus, the Italian attacking system played directly into the strengths of the Swedish defenders. Here I will go through key features of Ventura's tactics and how they affected Italy's failure. I think a structured shape is appropriate here because the lines between the midfield and forwards were so defined and egregious that transitions to the forward line seemed almost impossible for the team. Even Gabbiadini who frequently dropped deeper than Immobile (Part of Ventura's plan I think) wasn't able to link up correctly with the midfield. For the midfield Parolo seemed to be playing a more adventures box to box role as he frequently used his heading ability in the box to trouble the Swedes (in fact he may have been the only Italian to win a header). Florenzi was pretty much tactically inept as I believe he was playing something akin to a ball winning midfielder at times, but I went with the carillero because of his cover for Darmian and attempt to build transition plays with Jorginho. Other than that, the roles seem to be what is expected with Chiellini and Bonucci in their ball playing roles, although it is worth noting that Barzagli would frequently shift to the right back position when Candreva was caught up the field, but this is tough to replicate for FM (this was also a staple of Conte's system that often shifted to a 4-4-2 in defense) For Team instructions i opted for a high press with lots of crossing, because well that's how we lost so therefore that's how this Ventura team will play. Maybe if Ventura went with his trademark 4-2-4 style with Insigne and Candreva as inverted wingers, there could have been more creativity on the offensive end with greater numerical advantages to build quick one-twos and overloads against the Swedes. Here is a tactical interpretation I made for Ventura's 4-2-4 last year when he took the Italy job when I was optimistic about his tenure https://community.sigames.com/topic/396065-venturas-4-2-4/ I think it is worth providing a comparison to Conte's 3-5-2 used at the Euros last year. Conte's team relied on its discipline and ability of his players to play specific roles, especially with transitions in the middle. With a worse team, he was able to beat both Belgium and Spain through tactical intelligence. Yes I know the situations were different and slightly incomparable, but it is worth offering an opinion on some key differences between the two set ups. The use of Giaccherrini as a mezzala was important in Italy's ability to transition the ball to the deep lying forwards, as well as press the opposition defense. Darmian's runs down the wings were supported by Giaccherrini's own runs as he was able to provide a short option to connect the fullback to the forwards on the left wing. Conte's defensive approach relied on the midfield crowding the middle and pressing the defenders for the purpose of pushing opposition play to the wings. With the half spaces covered by Parolo and Giaccherrini and the opposition deep playmakers marked by Pelle and Eder, bottlenecks on the flanks were created. Offensively the team was compact and played with direct intent without relying too heavily on crosses. Pelle and Eder were used well as target men to Bonucci's vertical passes, but both players always had short options nearby in a midfielder or winger to continue the play. Conte's offense relied on working the ball into the box to the feet of the players rather than hopelessly crossing into the box. Compactness and midfield shape heavily contributed to a dynamic, easily adaptable team. Parolo was used quite well as a carillero covering for Candreva's marauding runs on the flanks while De Rossi provided sufficient coverage for Bonucci's attacking tendencies. Playing with urgency in attack doesn't have to mean flinging the ball randomly into the box, and Conte's Italy was able to demonstrate how tactical discipline and compactness can lead to successful attacking transition and buildup. I truly believe if Conte coached Italy's team on Monday that the story would have ended much differently. His ability to motivate and understand how his player's can fit in his system is unparalleled, and Italy would have gone into the game with more confidence in their game plan. It is interesting that Ventura could not replicate Conte's tactics as they often influenced each other significantly in their club careers. Ventura was supposed to be a small club man who would revitalize the youth as he did with Bari and Torino, but he failed in these endeavors.Hopefully the next Italy coach can use the player's strengths to develop a tactical model that works in big games as well as Conte's did in Euro 2016
