  1. This maybe better in stupid question thread but will try here. At the minute I have my 2 cb as DCL cb def and DCR bpd def, doing ok but would like them to be doing better, both their attributes are good for their roles, but conceding few too many for my liking. In a previous save I think I had the same 2 but set as DCL cb cover and the DCR bpd def and can't remember if this combination worked better. I don't use a DM in any of my 3 formations and I'm still getting results. I know that a lot is trial and error, but I don't want to throw points away experimenting. Which attributes should I be looking for for the pairing to work well? Would the pairing with the cover duty be better against the bigger teams?
  2. I propose to analyse every goal conceded over the course of a season in order to master the defensive arts! I'll look at conceded goals focusing on: - Player quality (e.g. defender is out-jumped or out-paced) - Tactics - Set pieces I'm Ajax, playing a 4-3-3,and have a very good squad! Won a quadruple including the CL in 2020, last year I lost to Mourinho in the final Tactics: I leave OIs to my assistant. Goal 1: Home to Vitesse Part 1: (player quality) Zorro wins aerial battle, but heads straight to opposing midfielder. He had 8 for heading at the time. Obvious mismatch for the 18 year old Zorro! Welcome to your new training program:
  3. Believe me or not, the last version of FM I've played prior to FM18 was FM2009. Obviously, a lot has changed since. My specific question here is about tempo. I remember that in "good old times" of FM's early versions, tempo did not affect just the way you attack, but also the way you defend. So when you played with a higher tempo and your team was out of possession, your players would tend to hassle the opposition to a comparatively greater extent even if your mentality and pressing were low. When you wanted to use counter-attacks, you could've done that simply by ticking off the Use Counter Attacks in the Team Instructions even if your tempo setting was the slowest possible. Now, let's imagine that we are in the FM18 and I want to defend patiently, sitting deeper and drawing the OP into my half before hitting them quickly on the counter. If I use the Counter mentality on a lower (or even much lower) tempo, will my players launch a quick counter-attack once a good opportunity arises (ie. we won the ball) regardless of the slow tempo TI or I'll need to increase it to normal, for example? I hope I've managed to explain the question in the right way. Otherwise, feel free to ask for more details.
  4. Hi, this maybe been discussed few times already but I need to know why is this happening a lot of times. Im playing Southampton with a 4-1-2-3 DM Wide formation, standard and flexible mentality, but my main concern is about my team's awful defending structure. My back 4 in this game consists of Bertrand, Yoshida, Van Dijk and Martina. Let me walk you guy through it. - 6 players are closing down Raffael. Those 6 player roles are CD-D, CD-D, FB-A, DM, BBM and AP-S. I don't know if 6 players closing down 1 player is a good thing or not - Martina is marking their left wing/ inside fwd - why nobody out of the 6 players not putting a hard tackle at this point? Circle A - Nobody put in a challenge yet despite 3 players closing down Raffael - If people talking about overloading, definitely my defenders are overloading their attackers, yet my defenders conceded the goal instead of clearing the danger - Why at this point Van Dijk and Yoshida abandoned their position? Circle B - Martina appears to let his marker off. I believe if I put Cedric he will do the same. - Why both CD leaving their space in behind?? This is what gets me very angry. Romeu as DM was already there closing down but these fools wanted to close down too. Circle A - 5 of my players were taken out of the game but a killer pass by Raffael including the 2 CD (world class Van Dijk included) without anybody put in a hard tackle. Anybody care to explain why? Raffael isnt Messi but even more annoying is why my defenders were so weak? Circle B - Martina loses his marker completely. I've seen Championship defenders mark better than him - Opposition scored with ease despite my defenders outnumbered their attackers by 8 to 4 (including keeper) - How come my overloaded defenders loses out on their attackers? - Why my defenders keep abandoning their position despite good stats?
  5. It doesn't matter what I change at the back my defence always plays 6.4s, 6.5s. 6.6s and we get humped every dayum game! Back 4 has 2 fullbacks on defend with standard center backs on defend. 1 DM infront for cover but i'm still conceding SO many goals, normally after we score first!! Any ideas on how to stop the rut?
  6. Hello everyone! To start with - I've been looking for a topic about problems in 4-4-2 tactic, but maybe there's no thread like that, neither here nor another forum. In fact I realise it's not the easiest tactic to use and maybe not even the best one for my team, but now it's more about stubbornness in finding not only problems, but also solutions. To begin with, as you can see on screenshots, my team is more like an asymmetric 4-4-2 than the standard one. I've decided to drop, in this case, Ndidi to DM position beacuse of loads of goals conceding by my team, but in a long term - it didn't help. I've been tweaking in this tactic for so long, that possibility of changing anything sounds almost nightmarish to me now. To explain some TI and roles - There are many players familiar with aggresive style of play, tight marking, high pressing and etc. No natural playmaker in the squad (now I've got Wilshere, but as I said, it's about proving sth). As team report concludes, team is aggressive and have very high work rate so more pressing and TI like tighter marking and get stuck in are quite natural for me here. I wanted to add another dimension to the team by using more ball playing, pass and move style and - to be fair - we can score from this. Attacking phase looks quite good, we're creating many chances, having the best shot accuracy in the league. Unfortunately, players miss clear-cut chances very often. Oh, and normally I don't use offside trap, dont' know why it's ticked. Slowish defenders force me to play normal or sligh deeper in defence, which is not exactly I would like, but I think there's no much choice. RB has attacing duty, so I decided to stick with suport duty for my Inverted Winger, beacuse I don't want to be too exposed in the right flank. But to the point - main concerns are very low percantage of tackling succes and many goals conceded from crosses. After reading one of Cleon's articles I realise that ball distribution to central defenders isn't the best idea beacuse of more pressing from other teams, that my defenders can't handle in a proper way. I almost run out of ideas, especially when can't defend the lead - My team was 2-0 up 3 times these season and we didn't get a single win, always allowing opposite team to score and draw. I would love to use 2 roles in this formation - Deep-lying playmaker and deep-lying forward, but it's not suitable to my best players right now, unfortunately. So, as I said, I've stucked and short of answers, so I hope to find them here.
  7. I am starting to become fed up with FM18. I am in my 4th season with Crystal Palace (My Own Team I Support) and I just can't establish any consistency. I have finished between 9th and 13th every season but playing games are just so frustrating for a number of reasons. No. 1: This one drives me up the wall the most. My players are brutal for conceding within 5-10 minutes after we score a goal, I mean every game. We score a goal within two minutes the other team goes up the pitch on the attack and scores, even though my team has good concentration stats, I can't tell you how many pens I've snapped because of this!! No. 2: Like the concentration stats, my players also have decent passing stats but the amount of goals that we concede because of sloppy passes from my own players is scandalous. No. 3: I have two four star strikers that have finishing stats of 17 and 18 that can't seem to hit the back of the net from 6 yards, even in their natural advanced forward role. And then some second rate striker with a finishing stat of 11 will bag a brace for the opposition with ease. No. 4: Penalties! Luka Milivojevic is my set penalty taker but no matter who takes them we miss around 3-4/5 penalties and Butland or Plizzari in goal for me have yet to save a penalty in the four seasons. I have tried everything to fix these problems, I've tried using different tactics with different roles. I have hired some of the best defensive coaches in the game and played with a well structured tactic and still can't stop conceding. The tactic I use is the same one I used to use in FM16 and I qualified for the Champions League nearly every season with a much less talented team than the one I have now. If anyone has any help as to how I can fix these problems it would be much appreciated, because I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure it out. This is my team and tactics.
  8. I believe that there is a major tactical feature that should be in the future iterations of Football Manager, and that feature is a second tactical screen for the defensive shape/structure of a team, in addition to the typical tactical screen that we currently have today. In real life, teams have a structure, width, and shape that they take up out of possession, often different to their formation in possession. Usually, when a team loses the ball, they try and win the ball back quickly in the spaces. However, when they fail to do so, and the other team recycles possession around the back, the defending team usually drops back into their own half and take up a defensive structure, often different from their formation in possession. For example, in the Champions League final, juventus lined up in a 3-4-3/4-2-3-1, but when they would drop into a 4-4-2 without the ball. Another example is Liverpool playing a 4-1-2-2-1 in possession, but dropping into a 4-1-4-1 when they fail to win the ball back through gegenpressing and need to revert to structure. This screen would allow managers to create a defensive structure, with instructions on the areas of the pitch that they would want to see their team tighten up out of possession, and the areas of the pitch that they would want to see their team press. Additionally, there could even be triggers for the defending team to press, like when a certain defender/midfielder receives the ball, or the ball is in a certain area of the pitch, the entire team presses. An example of this might be Atletico Madrid of the last few years, who defend in a 4-4-2, restricting passes through the middle, and vigorously pressing the ball when it is on the wings, or collapsing into the middle if teams attempt to play through the middle. Another well documented case is Liverpool's pressing when in shape: a 4-1-4-1, focussed on compressing the centre, and with Firmino starting the press on his own to force the defenders to play a high risk ball through the centre/over the top, or to play a low risk ball to the wings, which then triggers the whole Liverpool team to press the wing (initiated by Lallana). I feel this addition would bring an increased depth to the tactical side of the game, and I'm curious to see if anyone else echoes this sentiment, and also to see what SI's position on this is. I'd love to see your comments here, or on Reddit:
  9. Hi everyone, I'd like to ask a theoretical question. For this application, we are to assume that both teams are completely equal, and that it is only the strategies in play that define the game. With that in mind, if we were to have several strategies play against each other, which ones would come up out on top? I'm talking attacking, defensive, counter, possession, long ball etc. Take for example, attacking football vs possession football, long ball vs counter attack etc. What would win against what and why?
  10. Hi all,I have been playing FM for a few years now, and am confident on my natural instinct when it comes to the attacking phase, even the transition phase. Basically, on the ball, I am confident. Defensively, however, I always feel I lack knowledge, clueless is a strong word, but I could definitely use some help. I've recently started a save with Valencia, and have had a decent start. 0-0 Alaves, 4-1 Bilbao, 4-1 Eibar, and then I came up against Barcelona at the Nou Camp. This is my tactic going into the game; My aim is to play safe on the ball, keeping the ball as we travel up the pitch, and both CMs have PI to get further forward so once we are ready, they will look to make runs ahead of Zaza, and wingbacks will overlap. Worked wonders vs Bilbao and Eibar, with both Parejo and Perez getting in team of the week. The game went disastrously. We had almost nothing going forward, however, looking forward, I am confident myself on fixing those issues. We lost 5-0. It is not the fact we lost that I want help, it was the issues that led to the goals, because I do not know how I would fix them. I am not necessarily looking for answers, but pointers, a second opinion. I was making notes on the goals as I was watching the game. I will attach the pkm, and will enter the notes. Thanks. 1st goal - nothing penalty. 2nd goal, Messi cuts inside, Gaya follows him, fair enough, however Orellana doesn't track Robertos run, who crosses in for Suarez but ball rebounds to Neymar because Nani has already started running away, assuming because the ball hit Garay and therefore Nani thinks we have the ball. How do I get Orellana to track back? He is on attack duty in AML. 3rd goal, again Orellana not tracking Roberto, free cross, and Suarez unmarked in the box, despite Garay and Abdennour not marking anyone. 8 of our players in the box and 3 of theirs. What can I do to prevent Suarez being open? 4th goal, Cancelo caught forward, Neymar in space, and passes to Suarez. Suarez is in a lot of space despite, again, both Garay and Abdennour being back. We win the ball back. But should I mark Suarez tighter? Or man mark? I worry about his off the ball movement if I were to mark him tightly and fear gaps would be exploited if I man marked. Neymar ends up on the ball, 4 men around him, and picks out Messi on the right wing, with a 10 yard radius of space around him. Should I instruct Gaya to man mark him or just Mark him tighter? Messi skins Gaya and fires in, not a lot you can do to stop that I guess. 5th goal, we defend fairly well, showing Messi onto his right foot down the right wing, he still pokes a cross past Gaya, and again Suarez gets to the ball ahead of Abdennour and Garay 2 yards from goal. Solutions!?Barcelona v Valencia.pkm
  11. Hey guys, don't be too harsh to me, new here. I've been playing the game only since 2014, however I've picked the game up relatively quickly I would say, I've won a few good trophies, the prems, the champions cups but I don't consistently win trophies and build teams to the best of their abilities, sometimes I just believe it's almost a fluke. Therefore I've decided to come to the forum on tactics to ask you guys, how do you guys defend best. "Attacking wins you games, defending wins you leagues and trophies" - Sir Alex Ferguson, Like this great man once said, it's true. So how do you guys win trophies and defend so consistently and what is the best way for you guys to find defensive problems within your tactics Kind Regards Oliver
  12. Hi FMers So I'm in my first season with Saint-Ettiene and I've seen an old pattern emerge with strange heavy defeats where the opposition literally scores every highlight, got so bad I had to sub my keeper, but then the next game the team plays well and wins with a clean sheet. I lost 5-1 to Bastia and 7-0 to Lyon. My tactic is conservative on top of it as it is ultra possession focused. The tactic is a 4-1DM-1-3-1. Is it the asymmetrical formation doing this or is this the worst case simulation just happening at an unfortunate time?
  13. Hey guys was just watching Klopp on MNF and realised the key problem thats been bugging me. My team concedes a lot of goals from set pieces so I switch to a zonal marking system with 2 men on the posts. However, I often lose out to outswinging or deep cross balls that land between the penalty spot and the 6 yard line. I think there should be an option to deal with inswinging and outswinging corners separately (thus giving two footed players a real advantage if they are set piece takers perhaps) rather than left or right. Also Klopp mentioned how he uses 3 defenders on the 6 yard line doing zonal but 3 more players - 2 standing higher and one hybrid near post and zonal for the sort of fast near post flick. He also mentioned he sets the line to be higher for outswingers and deeper for inswingers. Same should apply for freekicks. On a side note, FM uses corner defending routine for FK's that are on the sides of the box. This leads to me having 2 guys on the post when I dont really want to and would prefer using an offside based high line. Can the two not be clumped together.
  14. Hi all, Anyone else having issues since the release patch with conceding a majority of goals from balls humped over the top? Beta was fine and was cruising without any issues. In 12 games i'd only conceded 5 goals. Now i'll be luckily if i don't gift 3 per game! Tried the usual closing down, player deeper, removing offside trap, all literally made now difference. Defending seems to be woeful, after watching the pre release videos with Miles was looking forward to see intelligent football. Just checking if it's just me or if defending is an issue in this current version?
  15. Hi, I have created a tactic for my Liverpool team and just played the first full season. Overall it is not a particularly bad season finishing 6th, however I do think I should be doing much better with the squad I have. The board want me to play possession orientated attacking football which I have achieved. My goals scored record is pretty good with a total of 70. My teams average ratings are pretty impressive throughout however I cannot stop conceding goals and I need a bit of help to point me in the right direction. The following screenshots show that the goals conceded are assisted from mixed locations so it's not like they are overloading one side of the pitch. Most assists are crosses and through balls. My home form has been good, losing only one game. It is my away record that is particularly bad and this is where most of my defending issues are taking place. My team is pretty solid throughout and I think with a bit of improvement at the back we could quite easily be challenging for the title. Please help.
