  1. Hey ladies and gentlemen: I'm currently running a save on FM Touch 17 with a team called Real Kings in the South African First Division. The team is pretty bad and picked to finish last in the 16-team division, but has two good strikers and a good AMC. I've chosen to run a narrow 442 diamond. Unfortunately I am at work right now, so I can't provide a screenshot of the tactic, so text will have to do at the moment: GK(d) CWB(a) -- CD(d) -- CD(d) -- CWB(s) HB(d) CM(s) -- BBM(s) AM(a) DLF(s) -- AF(a) I use a Defensive mentality because the team has low mentals (Aggression, Teamwork, Work Rate, etc.), and I don't want them doing any kind of closing down, but I want them solid in defence. Team Shape is Structured to keep creative freedom and roaming low. I didn't start with any TIs set as a base because I wanted to keep things simple, but lately I've had to use Close Down Less. I'll explain why in a bit. PIs: -GK: Distribute quickly and to HB -CBs: Close Down Less -Front 3: Close Down Much More THE PROBLEM The back four pretty much seem to defend like I want, a solid line of four that stays rigid and stays with strikers even if a full back/CWB goes out to close down a winger. The front three are awesome. They open space for each other, and having the right CWB venture farther forward gives the DLF another option and opens up gaps in the opposing defensive line. The problem is the central diamond, especially on defence. Now, with this formation, I expect to be bombarded by crosses, and I think this setup can deal with it most of the time unless we're playing a quality team. However, what I didn't expect was the central four to drastically shift to the left or right to deal with attacks on the flanks, leaving unmarked opposing central midfielders in the middle. I expect and want one of the CMs, and maybe another player, to move to the flanks to deal with a threat, while the other mids stay central. I don't want all four of them doing that. We've given up goals in which an opposing winger or fullback will draw my central diamond to the flanks, then whip a pass to the central zone outside our own penalty area, where they make easy long shots or cause my CBs to have to deal with unmarked deep runners and playmakers. I thought with Defensive/Structured the team would be quite rigid on defence, but apparently that's not the case here, so I tried the TI Close Down Less. The problem still happens. Going Fluid would help bring the team closer together and help cover central midfielders, but even on Defensive I find the defenders come up more to support attacks, leaving us more exposed on the counter. And it still doesn't solve the problem of the central four shifting too far to the flanks like a wolfpack. The result - especially lately since the AI has started to respond to my tactics - has been results like 2-5 or 2-4. Any advice would be most welcome!
  2. Who else had noticed thst when you are playing against teams like psg arsenal Chelsea and others That their entire squad is dropped deeper and their defence is closer to the goal... making it a flat back four Also their midfielders are now sitting on the bye line Note: when you are viewing tactical screen Does anyone know how I can copy that set up Maybe going for a deeper defensive line and changing the centre backs to cover?
  3. Hi all,I have been playing FM for a few years now, and am confident on my natural instinct when it comes to the attacking phase, even the transition phase. Basically, on the ball, I am confident. Defensively, however, I always feel I lack knowledge, clueless is a strong word, but I could definitely use some help. I've recently started a save with Valencia, and have had a decent start. 0-0 Alaves, 4-1 Bilbao, 4-1 Eibar, and then I came up against Barcelona at the Nou Camp. This is my tactic going into the game; My aim is to play safe on the ball, keeping the ball as we travel up the pitch, and both CMs have PI to get further forward so once we are ready, they will look to make runs ahead of Zaza, and wingbacks will overlap. Worked wonders vs Bilbao and Eibar, with both Parejo and Perez getting in team of the week. The game went disastrously. We had almost nothing going forward, however, looking forward, I am confident myself on fixing those issues. We lost 5-0. It is not the fact we lost that I want help, it was the issues that led to the goals, because I do not know how I would fix them. I am not necessarily looking for answers, but pointers, a second opinion. I was making notes on the goals as I was watching the game. I will attach the pkm, and will enter the notes. Thanks. 1st goal - nothing penalty. 2nd goal, Messi cuts inside, Gaya follows him, fair enough, however Orellana doesn't track Robertos run, who crosses in for Suarez but ball rebounds to Neymar because Nani has already started running away, assuming because the ball hit Garay and therefore Nani thinks we have the ball. How do I get Orellana to track back? He is on attack duty in AML. 3rd goal, again Orellana not tracking Roberto, free cross, and Suarez unmarked in the box, despite Garay and Abdennour not marking anyone. 8 of our players in the box and 3 of theirs. What can I do to prevent Suarez being open? 4th goal, Cancelo caught forward, Neymar in space, and passes to Suarez. Suarez is in a lot of space despite, again, both Garay and Abdennour being back. We win the ball back. But should I mark Suarez tighter? Or man mark? I worry about his off the ball movement if I were to mark him tightly and fear gaps would be exploited if I man marked. Neymar ends up on the ball, 4 men around him, and picks out Messi on the right wing, with a 10 yard radius of space around him. Should I instruct Gaya to man mark him or just Mark him tighter? Messi skins Gaya and fires in, not a lot you can do to stop that I guess. 5th goal, we defend fairly well, showing Messi onto his right foot down the right wing, he still pokes a cross past Gaya, and again Suarez gets to the ball ahead of Abdennour and Garay 2 yards from goal. Solutions!?Barcelona v Valencia.pkm
  4. Having had a slow start in my second season, I switched to a 4231 (image below). It yielded some quick results, but my defence is leaking goals. I'm never quite sure if I should have my defenders closing down whilst playing an offside trap or not. I'm also open to switching tactics completely if there are some good ideas. I like possession football, and ideally I would like to keep Iorfa on FB(A). I got Jonathan Viera in as well (his stats are awesome for a IF on the left). Any suggestions with these player roles in mind? Also, what would be some good opposition instructions?
  5. Hi, I have created a tactic for my Liverpool team and just played the first full season. Overall it is not a particularly bad season finishing 6th, however I do think I should be doing much better with the squad I have. The board want me to play possession orientated attacking football which I have achieved. My goals scored record is pretty good with a total of 70. My teams average ratings are pretty impressive throughout however I cannot stop conceding goals and I need a bit of help to point me in the right direction. The following screenshots show that the goals conceded are assisted from mixed locations so it's not like they are overloading one side of the pitch. Most assists are crosses and through balls. My home form has been good, losing only one game. It is my away record that is particularly bad and this is where most of my defending issues are taking place. My team is pretty solid throughout and I think with a bit of improvement at the back we could quite easily be challenging for the title. Please help.
  6. How do you set up your central defenders in regard to opponents formation - if you ever do that, that is? I though about a few methods, but I'm still unsure whether any of that matters: a) Rashidi on a few occasions mentioned that it's important to have at least one CB who's good in the air - that's quite self-explanatory. b) when looking at 2 enemy strikers (if that's the setup), usually one of them is pulled slightly back, which indicates the support duty. I tend to set CB(d) or in some cases CB(x) against such supporting striker and CB(c) againt the other, 'attacking' one to prevent his runs, but I don't know whether it's actually a good idea. c) if my formation is an assymetrical one, having one wide player on one of the flanks and two on the other, I opted for placing CB(c) on a 'more vulnerable' side. Bearing with that thought for some time, I wonder whether I should go with the opposite - CB(d) or CB(x) to attack the space, not pull back from it. d) do you attempt to match striker's attributes with your CB's attributes? if so - how? e) do you have any different defensive strategies against various offensive setups? F.E. 3 strikers, 2 strikers and an AMC, 1 striker and 1 AMC, 1 striker and 2 wingers etc? Thanks!
