The 2023-24 season is now finished. In the league, it has been another successful season where we ran away with it, finishing 11 points clear of Barcelona. We are on an unbeaten run that goes back to end of September 2023.
In the Spanish Super Cup we thrashed Barca in the semi-final only to fluff our lines in the final as we were taken apart by Real. In the Copa del Rey we went out in the quarter finals to Malaga so a very disappointing domestic cup performance after our success in recent years.
In the Champions Cup, we got further than last year by comprehensively thrashing Mourinho’s Roma and then beating Juventus before being undone in 3-2 on aggregate in a close semi-final with Man Utd.
Over the season, there were many strong performances but again, Iker Muniain shone in his mezzala role in the centre midfield. He provided us an amazing 38 goal contributions and an average rating of 7.69 over all competitions and thoroughly deserved his player of the year award.
Nico Williams started the season outscoring his brother and finished the season in third place in the goal charts with 20 goals and picked up the La Liga young player of the year award. Inaki Williams took a while to get going but when he did, he had a great season finishing with 27 goals, earning the La Liga top goalscorer award and the European Golden Shoe. He also weighed in with 14 assists in a fine overall performance.
There were key contributions across the whole squad with even the back-ups delivering goals, assists or good performances. Jon Karrikaburu turned things around going from waste of space to trusted back-up after some strong words in September before a home game against Valladolid where he got three in an 8-1 victory and was suddenly happy again. He stepped up to push Raul Garcia further down the pecking order. Garcia got some gametime at the end of the season to extend his oldest goalscorer record out to 37 years and 305 days.
Hopefully the performance in the Champions Cup will give us a boost financially which will stretch our financial cap. Freeing up funds through player sales had limited impact and we are at the full extent of our £1.2 million cap and this meant that we were unable to sign Cesar Azpilicueta because of his £120,000 wages. In previous years I have been able to use player sales to cover the growing wage budget as the team develops. I have found this much harder this year. Unai Vencedor is upset as he is wanting a new contract and I just can’t afford it within the salary cap.
Are you still using this tactic?
You using any specific player instructions?

Great story this is!
Are you going to do a detailed post about your tactic this year?

I will not be posting very often here (but I will read!) cause I decided to go different direction and create tactic that will focus on winning possession back, fast transition and even faster, direct attack. So this perhaps is not exact Klopp style however might be interesting to check. Also the shape is much different from Klopp or this topic.
That said however, I set up standard Gegenpress 433 DM and will take best from this topic too to set up particular player instructions. So far I applied just few (for WBs and IFs). What is interesting is actual style of play in possesion, where standard passes are used. So during the games, it's very fast, agile and sometimes that one long pass will be added. As my GIFs was too big, I am showing some goals & play example. As you can see, some goals are scored really fast after the possession is won. Other goals showing that extreme tempo and direct style of play can create nice scoring chances. It's not that team is hoofing around, I have some examples (I am lazy) where it was mix os short passes in the box (maybe I will record it).
What are the Player instructions that you used?

I will upload before the weekend is out as I believe I might have hit the sweet-spot between great possesion numbers and good chance creation which I think is the Holy Grail with trying to get a possesion tactic to work properly.
I have to be honest there are some key requirements I used to make it work in the CB, FB and HB roles which I believe are the keys to making it work.
I have also made a 3331 possesion based tactic which is hitting the sweet spot too but still requires some refinement which I will share at a later date.
Any news about this?

Do you use any other specific player instructions than the ones you already mentioned?
Really looking forward to the next episodes of your journey!

Boston United
Now I didn't get the chance to finish my Boston series on my YouTube channel for FM 21. Here with the new tactic on the new patch for FM22, we're going to look at how this goes through the leagues and how all of this plays out over a few seasons. We'll be favourites some seasons, mid table others and eventually big favourites to go down and it will be interesting to see not only if the tactic still works, but what numbers it puts up in the process along with this project.
This is how things look early on in our first season.

So generally I would say just look for player profiles from Pep's teams in real life in relation to the level you're playing at. Normally I like to have quick wingbacks at the expense of mostly everything else to help with transition in the match engine. Scott Duxbury though is the exception to that and he was in FM21 with Boston.
He's a good all round defender for this level. He's dynamic enough all round and also has pretty decent technicals both in possession and out of possession. His off the ball is very good for a fullback at this level and a combination of his all round physicals, technicals, off the ball & player train of get forward whenever possible I think is why he performs so well. He hasn't got that many assists and goals because he started the season playing CB for me when I had a more dynamic player playing wing back.

I wasn't happy with the defence and being caught in possession. The F9s were not performing and my front 3 became slightly isloated from the midfield.
I have changed the WBs to (su), dropped the CM(D) to a DM(D) and changed the F9s to AM(A)s. Both are told to tackle harder, one move into channels and the other stay wider. I've found the link up between the lines a lot better with quick short passes leading to some very nice goals.
This article is a really good read , especially in regards to the in possession showing how Villa are now more pateint, hence the Work the ball into box.

Hopefully more good results to come!

Care to share the rest of the player instructions you use @Ö-zil to the Arsenal! ? Can't get a 4-2-3-1 to work myself...
Looks like a fun save!

pair him with an IWB that provides center cover while the WCB goes round the outside.
this is what i used in my record breaking 107 pts serie a win. another variation is switching Treq to RMD for more penetration which allows CM/D to switch to CM/S which would otherwise interfere with Treq and the left WCB to defend duty. IWB on support becomes a DM when on offense to provide cover for opposition clearances and winning them back to apply a sustained offense, preferably someone with good passing and vision to recycle possession, i've tried IWB on D in certain games which ends up as a 3 ATB on offense. winger has hugs line to pull opposition fullback aside to create space for the on coming Mez (2nd top scorer) who has gets forward and into opposition area.
a good WCB on attack played on his opposite foot will make runs towards the inside
WCB/A will get provide option for a cut back or cross if he gets the overlap
LB too busy marking my winger while my Mez makes an open run into the box
same but with the tactic inverted. Wingers are so good at creating space for Mez
Any specific Player Instructions you are using?

Hello everyone
I'm in my 5th Bundesliga season and currently leading the table after 6 games. My tactic is performing pretty well throughout the time (overperforming, also won a Europa League and a Conference League), but I'm not entirely happy with 3-4 positions:
1. My wingbacks are hit and miss, more often miss. Their ratings are pretty bad after almost every game.
2. My AMC is not really performing either.
3. The central defender also seems a problem in some games when I look at the ratings, but it's not the biggest problem of them all and last season I conceded only 28 goals in 34 Bundesliga games so my defence is not that bad I think.
My tactic:
The Player instructions I use are:
Both wingbacks: Shoot less often, Stay Wider, Tackle harder
BWM: Hold position
CM(a): Take More Risk, Move into Channels (this position is performing great in this tactic and exactly doing exactly what I want from him)
AM(s): Take More Risk, Get Further Forward, Move into Channels
AF(a): Dribble More
Sometimes when I need a goal I switch to attacking, turn on counterpress and counter, and switch the defensive line/LOE to higher.
It would be nice if you people can share your thoughts about these positions/tactic, I feel like if these positions get fixed a little/can perform as well, I can grow into a top side.

To give an update on this, I've been using the same tactics in FM22, and tweaked them to use the new WCB and the results have been very positive. A taste
Didn't change a lot, and I though the WB and WCB would clash, but they actually created a pretty good dynamic with the WCB looking for more underlaps.
Example
Also helps recycling a lot of balls, keeping my opponents in the back, charging them with more crosses.
My DM is important to keep the defensive line with 3 players when my WCB is ...well, wide.
Results so far
Teams who try to play in a more positive style are getting absolutely trashed with transitions, the front 3 are looking even more impressive in FM22
Do you use any specific player instructions? Trying it out and I have a very good first impression!

Surprised to see so many comments about pressing still not working correctly since the official release. Based on my experience so far, it seems to be a big improvement.
Like many, during the BETA I struggled *big time* to get on the ball and even shut down the game in frustration after seeing each opposition centre back get 100+ passes, dominate possession whilst creating nothing whatsoever.
Since the official release, however, I have not struggled anywhere near as much.
Limited sample size, but these are my pre-season reports.
My game plan has been collective, possession-based football with high pressing and short passing. I've experimented with a couple of different shapes; mostly 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3 and 3-4-2-1.Only Dortmund and Monchengladbach were able to out-pass us. I think the first was just quality of players and the second we struggled structurally to get enough pressure on the 3-man opposition defence.
It seems to me like players just need to be much more 'belt and braces' in their pressing. By that, I mean setting your tactics correctly, but also opposition instructions, choosing the right players etc. Gone are the days of just saying 'close down more' and watching Mesut Ozil or Cristiano Ronaldo cover every blade of grass like N'golo Kante
Looking forward to your first (tactical) threads on this forum!

Funnily enough this is exactly what I've been using in FM for ages, works wonderfully for me
This is the actual formation
This is how the AF does in it
That's the DLF (s)
Other notable performers are the right defensive winger for some reason & the DLP
I could never use anything but this after discovering how effective it is

I always enjoy threads like these so thanks
You've gone into lots of depth, which I think is great, but I've only really had time to skim through due to time and patience, so I apologize if I'm duplicating anything.
I'm just going to post my interpretation of Pep's 18/19 (I think?) system, when they had a front three of Sane, Sterling and Aguero and hopefully spark some more discussion around some key areas.
- Firstly, I'm focusing more on the attacking structure, perhaps at the expense of replicating exactly how they pressed
- Secondly, I try to make my tactics as simple as they can be, so I try to avoid wacky or assymetric formations where possible. As well as trim down all my instructions.
- I actually tried to replicate this system a while back using a 433, but I was never satisfied with the attacking shape, as the wingers moved narrow far too early. I think a 4141 imo is absolutely perfect for how City played that season, as the wingers only every make late bursts into the box, while keeping width for the majority of the attack. The 4141 also allows more space for the free 8's to get forward into the half spaces.
- I think when Aguero played, he was closest to an AF in FM terms. Replaying lots of the games I see that he spent lots of time in between the centre backs or in the channels rather than dropping deep. Comparing him with F9 Messi or Kane these days and I think he plays much higher than a general support striker.
- I don't think there were any playmakers in the side. To me it seems that everyone more or less held there position and never really hunted for the ball to dictate the tempo.
- It took me a while to figure out, but WMa (with stay wider and cross from byline) I think is the best interpretation of Sane and Sterling. At the start, the one role I was 100% sure on was that Sane and Sterling were going to be a Wa, but results at the start were extremely incosistent and I realised it was because whenever the ball went to the wingers, they would try to dribble straight away and get doubled up on by opposition wingers and fullbacks. Wide midfielders reduce the dribbling and crossing and therefore make for much better combination play with the free 8's, as well as more patience in attack.
Any other Player instructions in your tactic than "stay wider" and "cross from byline" on your WM(a)'s?

we won back-to-back promotions with the same squad & with the help of this system So, to clarify:
1st season - Liga 3 (1st, promoted) media pred: 1
2nd season - Liga 2 (1st, promoted) media pred: 17
3rd season - Liga 1 (5th) media pred: 16
for defence & GK no instructions apart from the following for both wing-backs:
Ok thanks man!
DLP & IW(A) also without instructions? I'm going to try this one out in Lower League as well, I'll let you know my results.

Great read and nice results there! Btw did you make a mistake with season 2/3? If I'm right you said you won promotion from 3rd division to 2nd division in the first season, but the screenshot of the end of season 2 is a screenshot of the first division?
Didn't you use any specific Player Instructions on your defenders/GK?
