  1. I definitely want to read more and learn more about how tactics work. For now I'm just having such trouble understanding how anyone could ever get a 3 man CB and Wingback system to work. I am legitimately stumped as to how to get my players to better defend wide areas. Time after time it's just the opposition taking massive advantage of the space behind my wing backs and crossing it in or passing it behind my defense. I don't know if its my player instructions, or the shape or my team instructions. All I know is that teams with good wingers destroy me.
  2. Hey guys, I've been playing the Football Manager series for years and it's only in the past couple of editions that I've really started to try to make my own tactics (I generally just downloaded ones and tweaked them slightly). This means that although I'm very experienced in the way FM works, I am utterly amateur at understanding tactics in this game. For the most part I've stuck using pretty standard formations when making my own tactic. Always playing with one striker in a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1. I've always wanted to try my hand at 3 CB formation with wing-backs and narrow midfielders so I decided to start now as the new patch has improved the match engine. I've only played a few games, but I've really started to notice some worrying trends. My attacking play is quite good and we get lots of shots and opportunities. However I get absolutely carved up defensively, especially on the counter. The opposition find passes through my defense way too easily. I tried to take out the instruction of "playing higher up" but they still manage to find heaps of gaps to exploit. And I'm talking about the lesser teams, like Padova and Parma (who are both tipped for relegation in my game). I was also winning 3-0 to Sampdoria only to concede 4 goals in the 2nd half and lose. The opposition will often exploit the space that my wing-backs leave behind them and can deliver a nice through ball around my 3 CBs (who are caught playing too high up), allowing their striker to latch onto it and score. I would love some advice on how I can improve my tactic in a general sense and also how I can counter-act these problems that keep arising. And perhaps some advice on opposition instructions I can use to help my players defend wide areas more effectively. I would definitely like to be able to keep this shape as it's a lot of fun and really different playing without wingers. First off, here is my tactic: http://i.imgur.com/LsJejyi.png I'll also provide the screenshot of my left and right wing back's player instructions. They are the players who have the most individual instructions and also I feel that most of my defensive problems are caused by these 2 positions. http://i.imgur.com/0mkJquB.png http://i.imgur.com/n6K127t.png I tried to strike up a balance with my midfield so they could contribute well in defense and attack, but they seem to get overrun sometimes. The middle CM is my aggressor who will be running all over the pitch, and pressing the opposition. The left CM is a holding player who will look to hold that area of the pitch while my attacking full-back makes forward runs (this hasn't proved particularly successful, but this is how I envisioned it). This player is also expected to dictate the tempo of the match from his deep holding position and make passes all around the pitch. My right CM is expected to be more of an attacking player, he roams from his position and makes heaps of forward runs to support my 2 forwards. I also pretty much copied one of the tactics I found on this website (I think it was Dortmund 5-2-3), in regard to my CB set up. The left and right CBs are your standard CBs, no particular player instructions. The middle CB is expected to be a sort of DM. He will start deep, but move forward out of his position to press the opposition. Lastly, I'm also having a bit of trouble getting my DLF into games. For some reason I've never been able to make a successful 2 man striker pairing as one of them can never get into games and affect them on a consistent basis. I like him to drop deep into the AMC gap to receive the ball and make through balls for my striker and attacking CM. He was great in my first game, did exactly what I wanted, but after that he found it hard to affect games with his passing. Here are his stats (I made this guy btw. He's based on me, not that I have any football skill whatsoever, but in a fantasy world, this is the type of player I'd like to be. http://i.imgur.com/lokLEJF.png That's about it I guess, sorry for the overly long post. I just want to be as specific as possible cos I really want to make this tactic work. I would appreciate any advice at all. Thanks in advance! PS. Ignore the fact that I'm 1st in the league and the average ratings of the players I posted as this is only after the first game I played where I won 4-1. After that I continued and played another 5-6 games until I lost my temper after losing my 4th game in a row and rage quit the game without realising that I hadn't saved since the first game.
  3. Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but 31 pages is a lot to read! My wishes would be to have more dynamic player growth. Not only this, but more variation in how a player grows. I mean, once the game is mostly regens, all you have to do is buy some 17 year old wonderkid, give him a season or two of games and he becomes world class at 20. All the top team will do this, and it is really unrealistic and takes me out of the immersion of the game. Not every player is Messi, Ronaldo or Fabregas. What about the Drogbas and Luca Tonis of the world who were late bloomers. I understand that it is a little bit better in 2014, but I would love an extra variable to affect this. Something like Pro-Evo has (or used to have, I haven't played it since 2008), where you have different growth styles. I would love SI to introduce a hidden stat, with say 5 different growth types like: Early Peak (Michael Owen), Early Sustained Peak (Fabregas, Messi), Standard, Late Peak (Scott Parker), Late Sustained Peak (Drogba). With these growth types, combined with other stats like "professionalism" and "natural fitness" we could see a massive variety in the way players grow and sustain that growth, making the game more challenging and exciting when trying to find new players. As someone mentioned before, it would be great to also have a more dynamic system for PAs. Like having it grow if they are exposed to football at a higher level or if they have a few seasons of good form and conversely if they have a sustained period of bad form or are playing at a lower level, then the PA could drop. This could also be combined with what I've mentioned above to create a really realistic game in terms of player development and growth.
  4. Thanks for the reply! I'll test out your advice. Just quickly, would you recommend that I change the BBM to a BWM or a CM? And on what mentality (support or defense)? I just really need to get out of this rut!
  5. Hi guys, I'm playing as Aston Villa in the 2016-17 English Premier Division season and I'm really at a loss to understand what has happened to my 4-3-3 tactic. It could just be a coincidence, but ever since the latest update (yesterday) my form has gone downhill dramatically, even though people have said they haven't changed anything to do with the Match Engine. My form guide is below: After that 4-0 Thrashing to Man Utd on the 2/1/2017, I tweaked my tactic after reading some advice on this forum. As you can see, after I did that, I had an amazing run of form that saw me rise from 15th up to 3 pts away from third! And now suddenly, my form has begun to drop dramatically. To put this into perspective, the last match I played before this new update was my win against Southampton on the 18/2/2017. Also I lost 2-1 to Wolves on the 28/3/2017 , however I closed the game in my rage before I saved it. Stats wise, I don't really dominate possession, but generally I get more shots on goal than my opposition. The problem is I can never score! It's actually been a problem of mine all season. Giroud (my main striker) has scored 4 goals in 20 apps (Including a hattrick in one game, which means he's only scored in two league matches). Keeping in mind that last season he scored 19 goals in 38 and 24 in 35 the year before that. Every time he gets a 1v1 he will literally just pass it straight to the keeper. I bought Traore in Jan, but he has only had about 3-4 games and hasn't impressed in any of them. Most of my goals are coming from my wide players as they will move inside behind the defense when my striker holds the ball up. To add to these woes, I often concede extremely stupid goals, often through the fault of my full backs and GK. Their wide players will often make a piercing run from the wing, receive a through ball and smash it through the near post on an angle. This tells me that my full backs are doing a poor job at marking, and my goalkeeper is making simple errors. I also often concede long range shots (GK at fault) and set pieces (corners or free kicks from wide). I have no idea what I need to do to stop this from happening! It's becoming really frustrating, as I've now dropped several points and my hopes of qualifying for the CL are pretty much over. It was so sudden that my team started to concede such silly goals and have been unable to score. I am truly perplexed as to what has happened. As I mentioned before, people have said the Match Engine didn't change in the update, but things have noticeably changed with my team. Passes go astray too often and my defenders will get sucked into a tackle, completely miss the ball and the player, allowing the opposition all the space in the world to work with. This never happened before the update! I should also add that, yes I am over-performing, I am sitting at 7th on the table after finishing 15th last season, but that is still no excuse for how dramatically my form has dropped! Anyway, apologies for the long rant, and I thank anyone in advance for any feedback or advice they can give me in regard to tweaking my tactic! And please let me know if there is more information that you need!
