  1. Afbeeldingsresultaat voor folkestone invicta

Folkestone Invicta - Vanarama National League South - Season 2021/22

    Summary:

Whew... the first season has come to a close. It was quite a difficult season since my squad was pretty horrible. We started off pretty badly, but defensively improved when I exchanged a CM for a DM in October. We looked set for a comfortable mid-table finish, but a tremendous 14 game unbeaten run in the league put us in 7th place and so we even made it to the play-offs! After an incredible lucky extra time win against Dulwich Hamlet in the play off quarter finals, Bromley was far too strong in the semi-finals and we lost 2-0. Nevertheless, I'm quite proud of the team. However, if I want to challenge for promotion next year, I definitely need a much better squad, so I will be making rigorous changes.

League table - Concord Rangers and Bromley were in a class of their own. We actually lost only 10 times (same as Bromley), but drew too many games to challenge for the title.

FA Trophy - We were lucky in the draw for the first few rounds, but in the quarter finals we were no match for VNL team Yeovil

FA Cup - I was very happy with this cup run as it brought in quite some money. Of course, when we drew Grimbsy I knew it was over, but we actually gave a good account and only lost 1-0.

Squad - needs an overhaul if we want to challenge for the title. Some of the older players have a much higher wage than their ability warrants, though signing cheaper might also mean signing younger. There are a couple of ones with decent potential, but I simply do not have the time to wait. I believe 2,5-3 stars in this squad still counts as a leading Regional Premier Division player.

Transfers - Brought in a large amount of players. Not all of them were good, but I had almost no knowledge of the available players, so not all the signees were great. The squad didn't have a left winger and only one left back, but I didn't manage to really strengthen that side to my liking. Julius Ndene came on a loan in the second half of the season and ensured that I could rotate the center backs a bit. There is definitely a lot of work to do here for next season!

Finances - Not good. We lost 30K even with though we earned some money in the FA Cup. We need to proceed at least this far again next year and hope that more fans turn up at our home games.

    Key players:

Henry Newcombe - My best player is the GK. He saved us countless times

Julius Ndene - Apparently can't head a ball to save his life, but nonetheless helped us achieve a 14 game unbeaten run at the end of the season.

David Smith - Our top goalscorer by far. Tremendously contributed to the good season and ended in 3rd place in the top goal scorer award of the league. I'm in doubt if I should reward him with a contract extension even though his stats are not great. Any thoughts from you guys?

    Next season:

I would like to challenge for promotion next year. I had a lot of players on trial last year so I have a better overview of free agents that will strengthen the squad. I will defintely let some of the old guard go. Especially those who are on too high wages. Another good FA Cup run is necessary to improve our financial situation. On top of that the board has decided in all their wisdom that we need a new stadium. Quite curious to see how this turns out and what it will do to our finances.

  2. Hi everyone,

Loved reading all your updates until now and hats off to dafuge who has already completed the challenge!

I did this challenge once a long time ago and thought I would participate again this year. Really looking forward to it! I'm a slow player, so please bear with me. I'm going to start the challenge with Folkestone. The squad seems dreadful, but we'll see how it goes.

Well, in this save I see

    2 signings, 2 foreign
    6 signings, 2 foreign
    6 signings, 5 foreign (!)
    4 signings, 3 foreign
    9 signings, 3 foreign
THat's not so bad (it does seem to get a bit more Dutch oriented, but there's also regens joining in.....)

But it does seem there's still a general trend to sign almost solely Dutch players across the board (so all clubs in the Eredivisie).  What can we do about this? @Freddie Sands

Yeah you are right. I think the last two transfer center screenshots (2026-2027 and 2027-2028) skewed the numbers in my head since they have no foreign signings at all. But 22/23 is obviously the other way around with only 1 Dutch signing and 5 foreign ones.

    General question for the players

    How do the transfers look?
Do clubs sign/transfer foreign players or is it still 90% or more just Dutch players?

I went on holiday for 7 years to see what happened and it seems that mostly Dutch players are signed (if the foreign import number is correct):

Unfortunately, I had activated rolling saves so I cannot supply screenshots from every year, but I added the Ajax transfer history per season as attachments to this post as an example. It seems they lean mostly to Dutch players (a bit too much I think). If necessary, I can also supply saves on dates 31-08-2025, 31-08-2026 and 1-09-2027.

The scheduling of the games is not right. I play the same team on the 1st and on the 9th playing round of the competition and an other team on the 2nd and 11th playing round. In real life you first play all the teams once and then you play them all for the 2nd time. This sometimes changes because of rescheduling, but that isn't the case, it was planned like this from the beginning of the game.

Could this be due to the effects Covid has on the scheduling? The KNVB modified the Eredivisie schedule so that Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord and AZ do not play each other until January (approx. the second half of the season), so these fixtures could hopefully be played with fans attending again. This also means that they will play other teams twice before January and will affect other clubs as well. This might have affected your schedule as well.

Honestly, it's really sad to see that you're biased against Ajax as a "head researcher".

That's a bit harsh for a typo, don't you think?

Though I did actually expect that Jurriën Timber would be rated higher, since he is part of the first team (with number 2 even if that does not really say that much) and even though he did not play that much minutes, Ten Hag said he is a strong rival for Schuurs.

Yep, thanks to you 2, thats where the confusion was. And the game should mention that in the rule section that goal diff is between 2 teams going head to head instead of the league as a whole.

This is already implied in the "Results between teams"-rule, though. Goal difference between the teams is also part of that rule.

  8. Okay, the changes helped a lot so far. I've changed the CM to support duty with Gets Further Forward PI, so that it is slightly less aggressive and attacking than the CM (At). I've also changed the Wing backs (Su) to Full Backs (Su), since I got caught on the wings a couple of times and saw an increase of fouls around the corners of my penalty area, mainly from my backs trying to catch up with opposition wingers launched into space.

Biggest testcase was a CL game against Barcelona, which I won 1-0, while slightly dominating possession and creating a couple of great chances (even though I scored from a defender mistake instead of nice open play). After scoring, I removed the Gets Further Forward PI from my CM (Su) and changed mentality to Balanced. Barcelona did not create a lot until the last 10 mins when they changed to a very attacking mentality.

My striker is much more part of the game now and scores more from open play, while also setting up goals for the wingers or my CM.

Blind as a DM functions as a possession outlet for my CBs or midfielders when under pressure, which makes it easier to stay in possession when starting up the attack. However, I think this still is the weak point in my tactics. Especially when playing against a high pressing team with an attacking midfielder (noticed it best in my game against Heracles who played 4-4-1-1), my CBs and DM under pressure take too long on the ball and when they eventually pass to the FBs (since the passes to the DM are cut off by the pressing attacking midfielder), the Full Backs come under pressure as well and since they have fewer passing options than the central players, they make mistakes or just clear the ball. I've tried a higher tempo, but this also leads to more risky passing up front, which does not help my patient attacking play. Would it be worth it to create a secondary formation for these cases or are some simple tweaks in my current tactic enough?

No, SK per se is not a problem as a role. The problem is primarily your selection of roles in the midfield. For example, AP on attack duty is the type of playmaker that makes a lot more sense in a counter-attacking style of football than a possession-oriented one, simply due to its manner of playmaking (looking for quick and rapid transitions). I fear that it's not going to work for a top team like Ajax, precisely because of the space issue relative to defensive opposition I mentioned in my previous post).

Then you don't use just an AP, but also a DLP, who is located pretty close to the AP. While these are different types of playmakers, I still think there is no need to have 2 PMs in a fairly small area of space.

Therefore, you can make a sort of compromise here: either move the DLP to central midfield (and give him support duty), put a simpler holding role in the DM position (e.g. DM on defend duty or anchor) and remove the AP (i.e. replace him with a non-playmaker but still attack-minded role). Or keep the AP, but change his duty to support, replace the DLP with a simple holding DM and then tweak some other roles/duties to get better overall balance.

I personally have my favorite combination of roles when I manage a top team and want to play this style of football, but I want to encourage you to think logically, rather than telling you how I would set the system up.

There are also a couple of potential tweaks in terms of your team instructions, but let's leave them for later discussion. First try to set your roles and duties in a more sensible way.

I see what you are saying. It probably stems from me being too eager to suit the role to the player in that spot (Blind being most comfortable as a DLP and wanting to play Ziyech in midfield instead of on the right wing). I've also reviewed the pairs & combinations pdf here in the Tactics forum and have now come up with this:

    image.thumb.png.cee0dfe2ba23cf2a4048cbe43c841549.png

If I am correct, the AP (Linker in terms of @summatsupeer?) will now stay more in the midfield area and will be more patient when moving the ball around. I was also considering the roaming playmaker, since (romantically speaking) the description sounds like a role I would love to have in midfield, but he might be away too often due to the roam position PI? DM with defense duty will provide for cover the CB's and the midfield area (Sitter). CM(At) (Runner) will make forward runs to link up with the DLF (at) and hopefully exploit space over there. The duty might be a bit too aggressive for a patient possession style game, so I am in doubt whether or not this should be a CM (Su) with maybe the Get further forward PI. However, wouldn't this unsettle the balance by having only one attack duty vs. six support duties?

I've chosen for a DLF since I do not expect him to make runs behind the defence (there is not a lot of space there anyway), but mostly help setting up the initial phase of the attacks and hopefully finish them as in the end. However, I do risk here again that the forward is not in the position to finish attacks all the time and therefore still might not become my top goalscorer in the end. Not that it is an absolute must that he will become top goalscorer, but I would like my main forward to be at least up there with the wingers. In the old starting situation, he mostly gets goals from set pieces instead of open play.

I am still not sure what to do with the backs, though. Since I expect the wingers to roam from the wing and go into the central positions, that might make a case for wings backs for support out wide. Is it possible to give instructions to your wing backs to only have one of them get forward at a specific time, so that if Tagliafico is up front, Veltman is not and vice versa?

Thanks again for all your help, guys. Instead of using one of the standard templates, this increases the fun for me even though I find it quite hard and confusing sometimes.

Okay, let's put things into proper perspective.

First off, you are managing Ajax, the strongest team in the Netherlands. It's therefore reasonable to assume that in most matches you will face very defensive opposition that will look to defend deep and tight and thus deny you as much space as possible in their own half, especially in and around the box. If so, why would you want to further deny yourself that space by using needlessly aggressive defensive instructions. Here I am specifically referring to the combination of higher DL, higher LOE and more urgent pressing - all applied under a high-risk team mentality (Positive), which makes your players proportionally more aggressive by default.

First of all, thanks as well Experienced Defender. Abovementioned is indeed true. In the Eredivisie when playing my best XI, I am nonetheless able to win matches, purely since my team is often a lot better than the opposition. However, when leveling the playing field by rotating and allowing the younger talents to play, it gets a lot harder for my team to create space. I am indeed limiting space by aggressively pressuring an already defensive opposition. I will try your suggestions for a couple games to see how that works out!

Below is what it looks like now. I've introduced a split block by setting individual instructions to the wingers, forward and AP to press more urgent.

Another problem are contradictions in your tactic. While your setup of roles and duties is more suited to counter-attacking football, your instructions (except for the higher tempo and in part wide attacking width) are rather possession-oriented. Therefore, you need to sort these inconsistencies out.

I'm a bit confused by this comment. What roles and duties are the problem here? I can only really see the Sweeper Keeper being the role that actively tries to set up counter attacks. (of course I've already edited the tactics compared to my first post, so if the inconsistensies are only there I'm still curious to find out what they are).

I wouldn't worry too much about the AF getting isolated. The AF loves scoring goals, but he's also capable of creating space for others since he drifts wide when the opportunity arises. The Poacher on the other hand needs a lot of support—it's more of a situational suggestion if you need more vertical directness in the final third, which you might need against even stronger sides.

The defensive wing-back on a defensive duty is a pretty careful role. The main purpose is providing width and protection from counter-attacks on the wings. Think of Abidal who played for FC Barcelona, he was utilised in a similar role.

With the help of wing-backs your opponent is less likely to focus on half-spaces because your central players will rather stay narrow while your wing-backs try to stay wide—your IF and especially your AF will benefit from this. As Experienced Defender said, you could lower your line of engagement in order to improve vertical compactness. This will make it harder for your opponent to hit you on the counter-attack. Against stronger opponents you might consider lowering both, your line of engagement and your defensive line, a notch.

Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense!

  11. Thanks a lot for your help and time, gonefading!

I'll definitely try your suggestions. I have a few questions related to the roles and duties:

    • Wouldn't using a poacher or advanced forward in a lone striker formation isolate the striker too much, since I have trouble getting my striker the ball in the opposition box as it is?
    • If I use two wing backs, wouldn't that leave me vulnerable for counter attacks over the wings since they are gone a lot? Is there something I can do to remedy this?

  12. Hi, I could use advice on how to improve on my current main tactic:

    image.thumb.png.a8e407cd5bd9444639adcf48a9bd3c4c.png

    Player-specific instructions:

I instruct the wingers to shoot less often, aim crosses to the center (which they never do) and mark the opposition back (so they put pressure on attacking backs).

    Things I struggle with:

    1. My striker is not scoring a lot. He doesn't receive the ball often from the backs, wingers or midfielders and therefore does not get a lot of chances to score. Most goals are coming from the wingers.
    2. Opposition chances mostly come from balls over the top. I try to counter that with the offside trap, cover duty on the DLC and the Sweeper Keeper. I know it's caused by the higher defensive line, but if I do not use that, the field becomes to long and my players struggle to find short passing options when under pressure. Are there any other options I have to limit these chances or to improve my possession play?
    3. When playing against opposition with a similar formation and mentality, my players struggle to keep possession. Even though I might create enough chances to score and win, the board is disappointed with the lack of possession. Mostly it is because my back four plus the DM and MCs are put under pressure and they seem to not be able to make the correct passing decisions. Instead of passing to a player which has space to do something with the ball, they pass back to the player where they received the ball from or pass to another player under pressure. Ultimately, this leads to loss of possession or the ball being passed back to the keeper, forcing my team to start the attack from scratch again and allowing the opposition to reorganise.
    4. Penetration of the opposition box is almost always from the wings (cross or dribble) and almost never through the middle (killer pass or dribble).

    All help would be appreciated!

I also have two other tactics that are similar, but with some small tweaks to be balanced and more defensive. Any tips regarding these would be welcome as well:
