  1. For a seemingly poor team for your level, you are very attacking in your approach. I would build a defensive base first with such a team (with any side really) so that you will have some sort of stability, a means of scrapping home points before looking to beat opponents in detail. A 4231 has defensive weaknesses in its own right; and that in combination with your roles (CM(a) seems particularly optimistic) could leave you defending transitions with 4, or even 3 players, and defending with 6 players even when organised. If you want/have to play without a DM you could move the wingers back a notch + play the CM(a) in a more conservative role.
  2. I am looking to teach Mario Gotze the "dictates tempo" ppm, but it doesn't appear anywhere when i go to teach him a preffered move. Any particular reason for this, anything i can do?
  3. Quite interesting to see that their system under Mourinho now is much, much like that - only mirrored. Di Maria plays deeper on the right (infront of Arbeloa) and Ronaldo plays high up on the left. Di Maria is more creative, but basically plays the position of Drenthe in that first article, only on the right side. Ramos is a centreback instead and Marcelo normally attacks from left full-back, with Arbeloa on the right, but the assymetric 4231 was a very accurate prediction.
  4. Another useful thing is to hire a designated reserves manager, as he can, like fitness and GK coaches, train both u-18 and senior players.
  5. That is an excellent description, which i'd actually say is a quite accurate representation of the real life Helenius. A tall, pivot striker who can do alot of things well, but nothing brilliantly. For a pure targetman, he is technically good but quite poor with his head in the box; for a creative striker he is very good in the air, very strong, but technically lacking (a reason the danish national team setup cited as a reason he wasn't selected a few months ago), for a pure poacher he's got great all-round ability, but lacks composure. He is a-bit of a jack-of-all-trades in that sense; he is good at playing with back to goal, a good goal-scorer, a good targetman, a good creator; but not really brilliant at anything. Brilliance in versatility, perhaps. I've actually find him to be the most dangerous when receiving the ball centrally and relatively high up in the pocket, using his strength/balance to turn, then run at defenders using his pace, then becoming a threat through either shooting, using creative skills to set up others, or passing wide then surging into the box. I'd never want him stationary in the box; much better that he can arrive a little later with pace and power overmanning the opponents. Meanwhile, look at this peach he scored against SønderjyskE (3:13):
  6. He singlehandedly carried my Atletico side to a 2nd place in the 1st season. The save is corrupted now, so i can't show his exact stats but he was top scorer in the league now and we played some horrendous games where he continiously kept us winning or drawing games in which we were clearly second best. Obviously for such a player, the support to him is of utmost importance. There are some good articles out there about how to use poachers. http://footballmanagerfocus.wordpress.com/tag/poacher/, http://footballmanageranalysis.wordpress.com/2012/10/29/mechanising-the-play-the-poacher/
  7. On FM 12, he was one of the players i chased for a while to fill my deep-lying striker role in exactly a 41221. I never got him, but thought of him as a perfect fit. The role was quite custom-build, but in terms of the FM roles deep-lying forward support is probably closest to it. The key though, are the players around him. I've never really liked the combination of winger-attack and IF-attack. I'd then rather use either a winger-support + IF-attack, which should then include a midfield runner on the side of the winger, or two IF-attacks.
  8. Well.. in game 12 for example, you say that it was fair; the opponent had 3 clear cut chances, you had 2 and won 2-0. That "favoured" you. And of those you say favoured the AI, 11, 10 and maybe even 1 aren't really too bad and could be called fair. Besides; look at the actual chances; you would expect any team to score an emtpy net, while a pressed 1v1 is more difficult but both could count as clear cut chances. Another truth is that a countering-chance will quite often be bigger than a chance from a stationary attacking phase, due to numbers and therefore space and time for the finisher.
  9. The danish national team prefer shorter passing, slower tempo, with the only true exception being the long diagonals of the centerbacks. Actually, many of the club sides play 442; the 4231 is very much a national (+ youth national) side thing - though FC Nordsjælland use something along the lines of a 4231 as well. A PL-example in terms of style would be Laudrup's Swansea (not Rodgers' swansea though). Laudrup was assistant for Morten Olsen in the national team a while ago; and also employed a similar style with Brøndby.
  10. Cleon - do you only change to mentalities you are fluid in, from match prep?
  11. Eh? Because english wingers are generally more hard-working, or? Gutierrez isn't english either btw..
  12. He sure is, and does play most games; however - he doesn't really have a set position in my 442; my alternative formation is 4411, in which he is the attacking midfielder. In general though, he has played almost all games - i usually make space for him. He does however, have a big negative in his defensive ability, which has often made me hesitate to use him on the sides in a 442. He is at his very best when fielded behind a striker who can take attention by a) Running deep and stretching the active playing area (as Abdellaoue has proved brilliant at doing) or b) when fielded behind a striker who can occupy two defenders, which will often see him running past the frontman, thus becoming a deep threat in his own right (as such, him playing behind Rushfeldt has also been a great success). His role can, especially when played with Rushfeldt, resemble that of a central winger; running to the sides and whipping in crosses/linking up with our wingers.
  13. Now in September, things have been fantastic! As you can see, the league is pretty much sealed for me. We haven't lost a game in 14 matches. In the cup, we are in the semifinal (against Hødd), while in the EURO cup, we got to the 4th round of qualifying, before being eliminated by Stade Rennais FC after two tight games. These are our transfers (in Euro): In Mobi Okoli, 16K, Sandnes Ulf Mostafa Abdellaoue, 95K, Vålerenga Fegor Ogude, 140K, Vålerenga Out Ruben Yttergård Jenssen, 3.1Mio, FC Twente Lars Henrik Andreassen, Free Kara, 3.2Mio, Stade Rennais FC This is our preffered line-up right now Marcus Sahlman Hans Norbye-Fredrik Björck-Miika Koppinen-Saliou Ciss Magnus Andersen-Mobi Okoli-Remi Johansen-Hans Åge Yndestad Mostafa Abdellaoue-Sigurd Rushfeldt Our standout perfomers have been: Mostafa Abdellaoue (28 games, 25 goals, league topscorer) Remi Johansen (29 games, 13 assists, 7.39 average) Sigurd Rushfeldt (27 games, 16 goals, 5 assists, 7.38 average) Magnus Andersen (27 games, 11 assists, 7.36 average) And many more..
  14. Just started with Tromsø. Very exciting team! I am lining up in a 442; with everyone ready, it looks like this: Sahlman Hans Norbye-Fredrik Björck-Miika Koppinen-Hans Åge Yndestad Remi Johansen-Kara-Ruben Yttergård Jenssen-Magnus Andersen Mostafa Abdellaoue-Sigurd Rushfeldt Saliou Ciss, Thomas Drage, Steffen Nystrøm, Mobi Okoli have all seen alot of game time as well. The two full backs are on Fullback-Attack, the two wingers on winger-support; Kara on ball-winning-midfielder defend; Ruben Yttergård on deep-lying playmaker support; Sigurd Rushfeldt on targetman-support (with through balls set to often) and Mostafa on advanced forward. The results in the first 6 games has been like this: Away v Brann: 2-1 victory; Nystrøm, Abdellaoue. Home v Haugesund: 0-1 loss Away v Strømgodset: 2-1 victory; Thomas Drage, Remi Johansen. Home v Lillestrøm: 4-0 victory; Abdellaoue (2), Rushfeldt (2) Away v Stabæk: 2-0 victory; Abdellaoue, Rushfeldt Home v Molde: 4-0 victory; Abdellaoue, own goal, Magnus Andersen, Dan Roger Roland. This has seen me grab the number 1 spot in the league. As we have gained full knowledge of my standard 442, the focus has gone to working on a counter-attacking 4411. Magnus Andersen has been the biggest positive surprise; he has in 6 games made 4 assists, scored 1 goal and averaged 7.42. Though there were great interest in some of my players, Kara in particular, i managed to keep everyone i wanted to keep. All i did was to send Thomas Holm back to Molde, and sign Mobi Okoli 16K Euro.
  15. I'm halfway through season number two, and this is my team: I am currently 5th in the league; with too great a distance up to the top 2 (Leverkusen, FC Bayern) to seriously be a threat. As such, my aim remains a top 4 position, and a CL spot. In the Champions League, i was lucky to draw FC Porto, Besiktas and AZ, and i easily qualified in 2nd spot, losing twice to Porto, drawing away v Besiktas and winning the rest. Neither Besiktas nor AZ won a single game. I've drawn Manchester City in the 1/8 finals. In terms of transfers, my number 1 priority right now is a right back, which would mean i could offload Fritz, who is making quite big wages in comparison to his value for the team. For this, i have intensively followed a number of prospects, from which the list has been narrowed down to: Timothy Chandler, Allan Nyom (my favourite at the moment), Lorenzo De Silvestri, Atsudo Uchida, Tony Jantschke, Phillipe Koch and Paulo Ferrari. Davide Santon and Sime Vrsaljko were also prospects, but deemed too expensive. That is all i plan to do in the winter; it was a consideration for me to offload Aaron Hunt (and his massive wages) and replace him with Aycicek or Predrag Stevanovic from the 2nd team; but Stevanovic's injury has put a stop to that idea. I place great emphasis on keeping my reserve team in the 3rd division, although they are struggling massively at the moment. It was my intention and original tactic to have them use ssame tactic as the 1st team; but a lack of results has forced me to change this philosophy and assign Massimo Bonini to the reserve team - it is my hope and belief than he can rescue them from relegation. In terms of Lukas Schmits; he's been very solid and is certainly not a player i am looking to offload. He is versatile, consistent, hard-working, quick, persistent, focused. Though his technique is below average, i really like him as an utility-player. When Fritz is offloaded, i will have to find a new captain. The obvious answer would be to make our vice-captain, Tim Wiese, captain, but names like Sokratis and Afellay also seem like solid leaders.
