  1. Hit Xmas equal top of the ladder with United. Managed to qualify after a very tough CL group (including R. Madrid, Dortmund & Ajax). Have United in the League Cup semi finals and still in the FA cup. Reasonably happy with the squad, but still feel we're one or two players short of being Elite. Spurs had struggled last season and finished 8th, missing out on continental football. Alli & Kane both unhappy not playing CL football, and with Spurs sitting 3rd and looking like they will qualify, i decided to go after them in the January Window.

Hit the back end of January now and managed to secure my top targets. Released a couple just to ensure the finances remained healthy:

    20/21 Summer Window:
    INS:
    Dele Alli - 80million
    Harry Kane - 90million
Renato Sanches - 8million (transfer listed)

    OUTS:
    Will Hughes - 30million
    Brendan Galloway - 27.5million
    Saido Berahino - 42.5million
    Giovani Lo Celso - 47.5million

Will take a few games for the new lads to settle in, but very excited for the 2nd half of the season.

  2. Completed the third season! Again another really good season. Consolidated ourselves as a very strong team, finishing 3rd, some 6 points off winners Man United. On the Cup front, had a really successful Champions League run, losing on away goals to A. Madrid in the semi final. Too be honest, this far exceeded expectations and probably cost us 6-9 points in the league, and possibly the title. Knocked out of the League Cup by Spurs in the semi's, and Won the FA cup final vs Man United. Overall i was really happy with the season, and it set the foundations to really kick on in the next season. Upgrade several of the facilities, expanded the coaching staff and scouting networks.

    Transfers 20/21:
Brexit became official and we are now out of the EU so recruiting was a bit stricter.

    IN:
    Eric Dier - 38.5million
    Bernardo Silva - 55million
Riccardo Orsolini - 3.1million (loaned back)
    Total - 97million

    OUT:
    Danny Ings - 12.5million
    Gylfi Sigurdsson - 27million
    Leon Goretzka - 85million
    Ademola Lookman - 22.5million
    Jonjoe Kenny - 2.5million (buyback)
    Sam Johnstone - 6million
    Total - 160million

Really happy with the Ins. Dier is an Elite English talent and I couldn't believe when Silva was Transfer Listed. Feel like they will add that next level of talent to the squad.

Outs were mixed. I would have loved to have kept hold of Goretzka, but when i signed him on a free he demanded a release clause of 85million. Sigurdsson and Lookman were in the last year of their contracts and wanted ludicrous wages. Ings injury troubles continued so i was happy to let him go when a bid came in.

Have a few kids coming through. The lad Chabbi who i mentioned was impressing me got some solid game time. He's looking like a serious talent:

Big year ahead. Time to win the league!

  3. Really happy with the 2nd season. We were competing in the top echelon for majority of the season and managed to finish 4th. I felt we were a genuine title contender, but probably lacked the depth required to push in after x-mas. Perhaps my own fault, turned down so good targets to continue to give opportunity to the home produced talent. Very happy with Champions League football though, will be a big financial boost for the club to continue to upgrade facilities. In addition to all this, we were able to bring home the FA cup, winning the final on penalties. Was nice to deliver some silverware to the club and all the more so with all 18 players named in the match day squad being home grown.

With minimal spending, good sales and CL football, the club decided to reward me with a transfer kitty of 200million. I had no intention of spending it all given it was 3/4 of our balance and i had planned facility upgrades to request. But none the less, it was nice to have some money to bring in 1-2 targets and we all know local talent cost that bit extra.

    Transfers IN 19/20:
    Saido Berahino (35million)
    Will Hughes (18.5million)
    Gary Cahill (Free)
    Giovani Le Celso (4.6million)
    Jadon Sancho (47.5million)

    Transfers OUT 19/20:
    Mason Holgate (3million)
    Seamus Coleman (27.5million)
    Sandro (42.5million)
    Borja San Emeterio (5million)

Seamus wanted an enormous contract and at 30 i wasn't prepared to pay it. Barca came calling for Sandro and i couldn't say no. The others both have buy backs on them should they perform well. Jadon Sancho was a huge outlay, but one i was willing to make given he fit the mould and has enormous talent (5 star).

See how we go in the third season, im hoping to make the group stages and perform well and aim for another top 4 spot. Here's the squad:

    GK - Sam Johnstone
    GK - Jordan Pickford
    RB - Sam Byram
    CB - Gary Cahill
    CB - Rob Holding
    CB - Phil Jones
    CB - Chris Smalling
    LB - Kieran Tierney
    LB - Brendan Galloway
    CM - Tom Davies
    CM - Will Hughes
    CM - Lewis Cook
    CM - Leon Goretzka
    AM - Gylfi Sigurdsson
    AM - Giovani Lo Celso
    FWD - Saido Berahino
    FWD - Jadon Sancho
    FWD - Danny Ings
    FWD - Ademola Lookman

Few kids promoted from the 18s to the reserves who im really keen to give some opportunties too. Young lad called Mohamed Chabbi who i picked up first season (regen) looks really top level. Could get some cup game time.

  4. So for the second season, and with the anticipation of Brexit, i decided to go the Great Britain approach and try to utilise more domestic players. My main targets where to strengthen in the full back and Central defensive positions. A very ageing squad so i wanted to cash in on some of the players approaching 30 too, so it was going to be a massive turn over of players. Was happy to use a few loans again to substitute some positions until i get the players i want.

    Transfers 2018/19
    In:
    Kieran Tierney - £20m
    Lewis Cook - £17.5m
    Danny Ings - £8.5m
    Phil Jones - £8.25m
    Sam Byram - £2.9m
    Chris Smalling - £6m
    Sam Johnstone - Free
    Leon Goretzka - Free
    Boschilia - Loan
    Axel Tuanzebe - Loan
    Total - £62m

    Out:
    Michael Keane - £42.5m
    Ross Barkley - £37.5m
    Morgan Schneiderlin- £32.5m
    Idrissa Gueye - £27.5m
    Davy Klaassen - £17.5m
    Yannick Bolasie - £15m
    Henry Onyekuru - £3.8m
    Ramior Funes Mori - £3.5m
    Joe Williams - £3.4m
    Nikola Vlasic - £2.8m
    Dominic Calvert-Lewin - £2.5m
    Oumar Niasse - £2.5m
    Phil Jagielka - Retired
    Total - £192m

Was really happy with my Ins and Outs, but would have liked to have kept hold of Keane & Barkley. Unfortunately the big clubs came calling and i lost them. Smalling and Jones were both transfer listed and acted as natural replacements for Williams and Jagielka. Here's how the squad is looking:

GK - Jordan Pickford (Eng) - 24 YO
GK - Sam Johnstone (Eng) - 25 YO
RB - Seamus Coleman (Ire) - 30 YO
RB - Sam Byram (Eng) - 25 YO
CB - Chris Smalling (Eng) - 29 YO
CB - Phil Jones (End) - 26 YO
CB - Axel Tuanzebe (Eng) - 21 YO *LOAN
CB - Brendan Galloway (Eng) - 22 YO
LB - Leighton Baines (Eng) - 34 YO
LB - Kieran Tierney (Sco) - 21 YO
CM - Tom Davies (Eng) - 20 YO
CM - Lewis Cook (Eng) - 21 YO
CM - Leon Goretzka (Ger) - 23 YO
AM - Boschilia (Bra) - 22 YO *LOAN
AM - Gylfi Sigurdsson (Ice) - 29 YO
ST - Ademola Lookman (Eng) - 21 YO
    ST - Sandro (Spa) - 23 YO
ST - Danny Ings (Eng) - 26 YO

Rooney will see out his contract in the Reserves after picking up a 4 month injury in preseason, and McCarthy wont sign a new contract so hopefully will get something for me in Xmas. He's in the ressies though. Tried very hard to pick up Winks & Oxford, but was unsuccessful. Both clubs wanting £70m+ for them. Not sure i want to be investing that type of money into players just yet. No talent came into the youth recruitment, but was able to identify a few hot prospects at other clubs which i'll keep an eye on. Big turnover of staff too, eyeing up Scott Parker as my new assistant but wont leave Spurs just yet. Aiming for Europa, but will settle for top 10. See how we go!

  5. Decided to use Everton as my first career for this release. I normally like to see which EPL team struggling in real life in the current season and have a run with them. I also always like to try different clubs out and traditionally prefer to avoid the big clubs and their wallets.

I was actually quite surprised at how poor the squad was, and made some changes pretty quickly. Identified some decent CAM's so thought id run with them as much as possibly and decided to cash in on the wingers (i've never really played with wingers). Picked up some depth at RB, CB & CAM with some loan signings.

    Business:
    Transfers 2017/18
    In:
    Borja San Emeterio - £2.5m
    Axel Tuanzebe - Loan
    Boschilia - Loan
    Angel Correa - Loan
    Total - £2.5m

    Out:
    Kevin Mirallas - £22.5m
    Muhamed Besic - £15m
    Aaron Lennon - £8.5m
    Shani Tarashaj - £3.5m
    Luke Garbett - £2.5m
    Joel Robles - £2.5m
    Maarteen Stekelenburg - £800k
    Total - £52m

    Competitions:
PL - Finished 9th, limped home with not much depth. Wasn't keen to spend much and knew it may be an issue, but wanted the transfer kitty to roll over into the 2nd season. Won both merseyside derby's so was happy with that, and was only 3 points off Europa.

Caraboa Cup - Knocked out early, 3rd round away to Norwich  on pens.

Euro Cup - Spurs got me on away goals rule in the QFs

FA Cup - Leicester knocked me out 4th round away.

    Overview:
Was quite happy, got some game time into some good kids. The new boys like Gylfi and Sandro settled well, and Wayne contributed. Renewed Barkley and good to have long term injuries back in the squad.

    Onto the next!

  6. Im really struggling defensively in wide areas, and on the flip side, most of my penetration is coming from wide areas:

    Corners - Scored 7, Conceded 4
    Cross - Scored 17, Conceded 15

As soon as the ball goes wide in a defensive or attacking sense, i'm expecting goal. 16 of the goals i've conceded have come from within the 6 yard box, with 22 coming from central 18 yard box.

At the moment i've attempted to drop the wider players back into a RM/LM midfield starting position in the hope they can provide a bit more support to the full back. I actually feel like when im conceding i should have the situation covered. FB's and CBs seem to be positioned correctly, and often outnumber opposition players, but i get beaten 1v1 very easily (even by poor players) and the cross seems to hit the 1 opposition player in the box.

I'd really like to CBs to get closer to the FB in wider positions to act as a 2nd defender. Normally id be happily letting a cross come in when we out number them 3v1 or even 4v1, but at the moment im conceding a lot in these situations. Now looking at trying to prevent the crossing situations.

  7. 21 minutes ago, Dr. Hook said:

Just so everyone is aware, till 18, training and facilities are the most important in development, after 18, development is weighted towards matches, so if you don't like loaning, then they need to be getting quality playing time for you in some way.

at a big club, is reserve football not considered "quality playing time"? If im 18 playing in Man United reserves, getting 30-40 games in some world class training facilities, you'd expect that to be ok?

  8. i dont use loan out players all that often. Mainly because often, my facilities and staff are of a higher standard, i cannot tutor the player, i have no control over the training and it effects home grown rules. Agreed, there are benefits to them "playing", but i feel at 16-20, reserves is suitable enough and i have complete control over them. The only time i use loans is if im happy with the training and development i've done, but i have a couple of players ahead of them im not ready to move on yet. Then its purely to get them football at a higher standard.

Looking at your player, depending on how you play, you may want your full backs to be quite aggressive and get forward. Your lads is very defensive stat driven with minimal technique, off the ball or dribbling stats. You may want to start focusing his development more on the offensive stats in his game, where by loaning him out to Newcastle, they could continue his defensive development. I imagine there are pro's and con's to all aspects, but i like to mould players to suit the tactics i have, and most stat increases/changes happen in those early years.

  9. So im 3/4 way through my first session, and things i've noticed:

    Match Engine:
Every Beta and Release for the past 4-5 years has been quite poor in regards to the balance in the ME. I feel as if crossing is very effective on this version of this seasons FM. I've scored 45 and conceded 19 from crosses, far ahead of any other type of goal assisted. Score and concede quite often from corners too. And then there's pretty much the 15-20 times per game that both teams cross and the keeper has to flick behind and you get the standard "Player X certainly didnt mean that". I imagine it will take 2-3 patches before they find the balance. I do like the fact that strikers seem to be effective again, especially after the powerful strikerless formations last season.

    Match Day:
Slowly getting my ahead around all the screens. Dont like that i've lost the split view, but will get used to it. Do like the "are you sure you want to keep changes" after a goal etc. Thats a nice addition. I watch 2D so cant comment on the simulation of players etc. Leave most of the other stuff to my assistant.

    UI:
Seems quite busy. FM players are creatures of habit, so the new UI will take some serious getting use to. I dont mind the change, but i do feel like im clicking alot more to navigate my way around. Just seems to be extra drop boxes and screens everywhere. I guess it will become normal after time.

    Scouting Addition:
Dont mind it, makes sense to have scouting meetings. Although i think there needs to be more of a combination of new & old here. General scouting missions can appear in the scouting missions, but when i request certain player reports for players i want scouted, they should appear in my inbox as individual entries like old. Or even the option during the scouting meetings to view "scouted players" or "requested players". Atleast them i can focus on the players i request while my assistant/cheif scout deals with the rest. Then i can sit in on a meeting every now and then to view what kind of stuff they've found.

    Medical centre:
Made a conscious effort to following this, if a player is high risk or higher, i haven't played. Still had the highest injury rate in the league. So many ligaments (ankles and knees) plus knocks. Most of my attacking players struggle to play more than 2 games in a row due to injuries.

    Overall:
Decent, it is a beta so nothing to get carried away with. But it does provide a pretty good foundation of what to expect in the full release. This this version will need 3-4 patches and we will be reaching the back end of january before we have a solid, balanced game.

  10. I apologise if this has already been answered, but in previous FMs i utilised "split view" on match days. would have match stats on one side and match overview on the other. I cant seem to simplify the match screen in between highlights. it seems very busy and some windows seemed locked in position. Has the split view feature simply been replaced or am i missing something?

  11. I've managed to reach January on 3 separate saves so far. Im noticing quite a lot of "back to back goals". Score in 39th, score in 40th-41st etc (allow for celebration between too). Both for and against. To give a breakdown of my current save, ive played 36 games.

    Game 1 - Goals in 87th, 88th, 89th.
    Game 5 - Goals in 59th, 61st, 63rd.
    Game 6 - Goals in 45th, 45+1.
    Game 9 - Goals in 43rd, 45th.
    Game 11 - Goals in 82nd, 84th.
    Game 17 - Goals in 30th, 31st.
    Game 18 - Goals in 10th, 12th.
    Game 21 - Goals in 52nd, 54th.
    Game 22 - Goals in 42nd, 44th.
    Game 23 - Goals in 1st, 3rd (and 6th).
    Game 25 - Goals in 1st, 3rd.
    Game 28 - Goals in 23rd, 24th.
    Game 32 - Goals in 19th, 21st.
    Game 36 - Goals in 29th, 31st & 58th,61st.

My other saves would have similar numbers as i noticed it as a theme on the first save. Is this a common occurrence for anyone else? are these numbers excessive?

  12. As always, enjoying the game. Will admit i enjoyed the Beta a bit more then the full release. The latest update seems to have highlighted a few issues for me (maybe they were always there, just paying more attention now).

Selling players: clear out of the reserves and u19s when i take over any club is a must. Selling players without a gold star for free to clear them off. However, it seem to be ******* off first team players who are questioning why im selling him as they think hes a good player. i booted up FM scout to check him out, his PA was 61 in a team where the average was 120-130. Happening basically every player i sell.

Crossing and set-pieces: frustrating. Concede a lot. Either the full back (sometimes assisted by a DM) wont close the crosser down. CBs refuse to track. Anything put into the box is Mayhem and i resort to shutting my eyes when ever i see the ball go wide.

Demanding xfers: players come to me wanting bids to be accepted by bigger clubs. havent got an issue with this, its quite realistic. However, if no bid eventuates they remain annoyed at me? Ive stated ill accept one if one comes in, none comes in, bt they remain angry at me for not accepting anything? the premise is good, but needs some tweaking.

CCCs: needs clarifying. most will judge a Clear Cut Chance as something they should score. I dont mind players missing these, but when you're getting 7-8 per game for 1 goal is quite unrealistic at elite levels. maybe some of these need to be changed to "half-chances" to rectify peoples frustration.

  13. matty

Your Ass Man tends to use best fit player for position.

If you take any of my saves I do use different types of players in same positions, for example, both Bale and Bassong play LB or say Lennon and Nani. As long as a player is good at the position I do not worry about roles and duties.

Most of my tactics are set up for Left MC more attacking in nature I.e Modric and Right defensive i.e Sandro. The forwards left more creative i.e Aguero the right any other type.

The Merry Xmas tactic was a bit of fun for holiday season as its set to All Out Attack.

Have a look at the 442 and you will see it's set up as a team tactic, all very simple as the game should be.

given the 4-4-2 team tactic a go.. quite enjoyable to watch the football being played. At home im absolutely crushing opponents, but away im absolutely abysmal. do you change the tactic home and away?

  14. just read through everything. seems like you've created alot of tactics with great success Knap! Ive always been inclined to creating my own tactics with the TC, but thought it would be worth testing out someone else's to get some ideas etc. Im looking at using the Tottenham merry xmas tactic as i enjoy 4-2-3-1 type formations. My only issue is i have no idea of stat specifications and player roles now that its classic view. What type of players fit each role? If you could convert the player positions to TC roles, how would you assign them? For example, is the Striker a DLP? AF? CF? Poacher etc? are the wingers actual wingers or inside forwards? Is the AMC an advanced play maker, an actually attacking midfielder or a Trequartista? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
