I would hate to play for him.  You'd want a coach to focus on how you as individual can make a creative impact on the game, and not be detailed with stopping your direct opponent.  He's obsessed with the opposition to the point of training ground spying - see Derby County controversy.  I just see a reactive and overhyped coach.

... but this. Try watching football rather than reading the headlines on the back page of the Daily Mail.

Does this not simply highlight Bielsa as a reactive coach?   Someone whose primary concern is stopping the opposition alongside tenets for organisation and hard running?  His Leeds side had little in the way of actual creativity and when they were eventually exhausted - which was always inevitable - the results fell away.   Isn't that the pattern of his career?  Sometime squads reject his methods but those who do buy-in only last a season or two before injuries and fatigue sees form dry up & capitulate and he then leaves.

Looking at your team you're possibly not looking at it objectively (but then neither am I).

Bielsa is a beautiful man, but by no means a perfect coach. His Leeds played some wonderful football, beyond their apparent talent. The "inevitable" exhaustion had an awful lot do with his extreme fussiness over buying new players and rotating the squad. Maybe there's a perfect DoF somewhere who could overcome that, but I think Victor Orta did as well as anyone ever has.

So basically I agree with everything you said except the creativity comment :-) Leeds fans will never love another manager who loses 6-3 to Man Utd a hundredth as much as we love Bielsa

I was negotiating with a player and he asked for a promise to strengthen the midfield. Since I was in the process of signing three midfielders, I agreed.

On the promises list, it shows I have 57 days left to fulfil the promise, and the promise progress bar is currently unfilled.

Is this going to trigger later on when the 57 days are up, or has there been some timing problem, where the new midfield players arrived after I had offered the contract, but before the player I offered the promise to arrived at the club?

If the promise will not be fulfilled, is it possible, when this happens, to discuss with the player so that he doesn't mind that the promise wasn't fulfilled? I don't mind reloading and trying different chat options, if necessary, to reach the desired outcome.

Unfortunately, the in-game editor doesn't remove promises.

It is going to trigger when 57 days up. There will be a chat with the player, but none of the options will make him happy.

Yeah makes sense, but how to target them in particular? Should I get the 10 to man mark one and a CM to manmark the other? Both 9 and 10 to block them off? Only block ballside CM? (How would you do that in FM?)

I don't go to that level of detail sorry! I occasionally man mark an opposition player, but I worry about that player being switched to another position and my defence becoming vulnerable until I realise

  5. It must be possible, because he can see in opposition previews that players in AI can have good partnerships, but I think it's going to be statistically very unlikely to occur. It seems there has to be a fairly high number of games played together to get the good partnership link, and how often do youth players, who play together a lot, continue to play together a lot in the first team, without a significant break?

  6. I think over the years I have become fairly set in my ways with tactics, moderate possession/pressing going between 4-3-3. 4-2-3-1 and occasionally some 3 at the back formation depending on how the opposition line up. In season one with Sunderland I mostly used this, finding that more pressing too hard for the team:

At higher levels I'd start making the passing shorter, up the tempo be more creative etc.

However this time I'm managing Sunderland, champions of League One, and going into the 2022/23 season in the Championship the board wants me to:

    • play defensively sound football
    • make the most of set pieces
    • play counter-attacking football

I'd appreciate some advice on setting this up. I think I'll be able to do the first two parts OK, but I've never delved into playing on counter-attacking football that much. Going into preseason I'm planning on this set-up:

    Any thoughts?

  7. I've started an unemployed save and got the job as manager of Osasuna Promesa, the Osasuna B Team.

Results are fine, but the board is Devastated becuase of my failure to "Give playing time to first team players". Does anyone know how to give playing time to first team players? Players from the senior team never appear as available for selection, and I don't seem to be able to transfer them to my team.

  8. I run two a system with two formations (4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1) which I'll switch between based on my opponent's formation, and I have three different tactics which I switch between based upon the quality of the opposition. At the moment, running a pretty good PL team I've got an attacking, low temp possession tactic, a positive, high-pressing tactic, and a "balanced" one, which is the defensive setup

  9. Am I missing something?

I've been trying to set up a Bielsa-Leeds tactic, so use Extremely Urgent Pressing. I went through all the roles and duties for AML and AMR and chose Trequartista for both purely because they have "Standard" pressing and the most i could get for any other role was "Less Urgent" pressing.

The wide Trequartistas seem pretty defensively sound to me, and their positioning in possession has been great.
