  1. No. Haven't played Football Manager since pre-steam.

It's the same every year. The game isn't perfect, even when it's time to release a new edition. It's a cycle.

In an ideal world Football Manager would be perfect each year, but it's not, so I propose that Sports Interactive release the game every other year.

SI should half the price for each edition and then release a mega-patch a year later for the same price.

That way SI don't lose out on money and the fans get a better, less buggy game.

I doubt there are many, if any, people trying to play computer games in places that actually have "zero internet".

You certainly don't need a permanent internet connection to play FM though, just to download it and start it up the first time. Personally I nearly always play offline. Even if I'm not using the official offline mode my FM PC only has wired internet access, and with only 1 wire coming out of my router it often isn't even connected to that PC, so I'm still playing with no actual connect to Steam or their servers. It works fine.

At last check 1/3 of the World is still internet-less. I'm sure some of those 2.7 billion people wouldn't mind playing Football Manager.  ;)

I know.  The fact that you even have to use Steam is emblematic of what I hate about the virtual world we currently live in.

It Is what it is, though. I won't moan about it.

Do you have a link that supports this? Everything that I have been able to find suggests that this isn't the case and that there were a few games using it. FM wasn't one of them.

    A link? I don't.

But at one point the majority of companies were implementing it. (If people are going to get away with something, there'll do it)

I have no reason to believe that SI weren't one of them.

Not something I was very familiar with, but based on what I can see that is built into certain game by the developer themselves rather than Steam. And looking at it, it's involved in the game no matter how it's distributed. I also couldn't find any evidence of it being built into FM. So based on the available evidence I've seen, installing Steam and FM only would not add Red Shell. Unless, I'm missing anything, of course, I have only looked for a few minutes, so I could very well not have seen some information contradicting this.

I'm lead to believe that Red Shell is implementing with all games that run with Steam.

When it was leaked, several companies removed it from their titles (50 or so). SI (or football manager) is not one of them.

What do you base that off? As far as I can tell, you have to "opt in" to share HW specs, and other than the games you use, I don't really see what Steam would monitor?

If you base your sense of spyware on it knowing what you play, you might as well chuck all browsers, OS's, and pretty much all other software into that pile. Unless you know of something I don't, of course, and if you do, please share (unless it's some conspiracy theory blog or something, because I see enough of that nonsense anyway).

Yeah. I know that the vast majority of software contain a certain amount if spyware, etc. However, things like OS's and  whatnot are pretty much essential to using a computer and/or using the net.

Steam isn't essential. It's just another slice of your privacy being taken.

Have you heard of the spyware called "Hard Shell"? It's in Steam.

Hard Shell has the ability to detect what you're watching, your social media actities and it collects cookies, etc.  Is that any different from Microsoft, etc? No. But as I said, I'm not going to offer up my privacy to play a computer game.

The reason I stopped playing Football Manager in the first place was because of the introduction of Steam.

You can use Epic or Xbox Game Pass, I think.

And while I don't disagree with you in principle, those types of distributive services also works as a soft DRM and an easy way to distribute the game. I mean, even the physical copies you buy in stores, most games often don't have a CD/DVD in them any more, but rather a redeem code to Steam or other platforms anyway.

Also, not quite sure why you brand Steam as a cult. I've had the service for years and never had the feeling I was in a cult. What's the reason for not wanting Steam anyway, other than not being able to use software isolated? This is a genuine question and not meant as condescending or anything.

It's a piece of software that essentially spys on your activities

    It's glorified spyware.

  7. I don't have steam. I'm not a gamer, nor will I ever be, so I haven't no desire to be a part of that particular cult.

Is there any alternative to steam?

I think if you buy a physical copy of a computer game, you should be able to play it out of the box, and whichever way you choose. I'm old fashioned like that.

I could really imagine this kind of thing being a Youtube/social media hit with people invested in the lineups, the game streamed live etc

Or maybe i'm way off

    I can see that.

Like a reality show for Football Manager/Football fans.

I'd certainly watch it ahead of the real reality shows. :)

However that's not what @Draakonwas saying

He contemplated playing a real life FM, only clicking continue when the real life day clicks over. You'd only ever buy one FM in your whole life, or only play 1 season each year!

I play 1 game a day usually , or try and fit 1 week into 1 night's play so i can see the appeal of what you have said.

No. I know what he was saying

It's an interesting way of playing Football Manager.

Life is too short for this style of play!

    Nah.

I've seen people play 30+ seasons. What's the difference with playing that amount of seasons, at an accelerated speed, than someone playing a career day-by-day, if it takes the same amount of real time?

I see the appeal in playing in on a day by day basis. It would make it more real. As opposed to watching highlights of a match and missing the nuances.

  11. 9 hours ago, Draakon said:

I've toyed with an idea in my head to start a "real life save" with FM. It means that you play the game up to the real date and then continue day-to-day basis, not pressing 'continue' further than the current date IRL. That would give you one or maximum two games per week and that is something to look forward to - you might feel like the actual manager, setting your team up for the weekend match and when the day comes, watch full 90 minutes of the action.

    That's interesting.

  12. 4 minutes ago, FrazT said:

Given the limited amount of time that I can give to playing the game, I watch all my matches in highlights mode only- I have never considered watching the full 90 minutes and I go back as far as you do with the franchise.

Yeah. Even at my peak I could only fit about one or two matches in per day.

Life has gotten in the way for the past decade or so. :)

  13. I've played Football Manager since it was "Championship Manager". I vividly remember buying the first Championship Manager for the Amiga, in '92 or '93.

Ever since the introduction of the 2D match engine I've watched the full 90 minutes of all of my matches. Even friendlies. Yes, it was time consuming, but the reasoning behind it is it's far easier to judge players if you watch them in 90 minute matches than watching them in highlights.

Plus, it's more realistic. I mean, you don't get Sir Alex Ferguson (back in the day) or Guardiola only being attendance of 5 minutes of their matches.

Yes. A season took a while, but it was worth it.

I have taken a break from Football Manager for a while. The most recent one that I've played is the '13 edition.

Does anyone else watch 100% of their matches?

The basics are the same, but there is a lot of different details. You could try the free demo on Steam? It will let you play for 6 months (in game), and you can continue if you decide to buy the full game. And if you don't, well, at least you know.

    I think I'll do that. :)

I know that the differences in editions are very much incremental, but with ten years of a gap... it might be one hell of a bridge to gap.

  15. Hi all.

    Here's the deal:

I haven't played Football Manager since the 2013 edition, so it's been a long while before I've played FM.

How much of a culture shock would it be if I leaped into the FM 20022 fray? I mean, what have I missed? Or is that list way too long to list?

Up to FM2013 I used to buy every version, so the transition from the previous one to the new one was pretty much seamless. In this case it's been almost a decade, I fear the leap would be way too big to adjust easily.

  16. I bought a new laptop. I didn't buy it specifically to play FM. I'll just be using it for word processing, etc. But I was just wondering how well it would play Football Manager 2022 if I leapt back into the fray.

Bear in mind, I would play it with the lowest detail available:

    HP Elitebook 830 G8

    11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1145G7 @ 2.60GHz   2.61 GHz

    Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics

    16 GB RAM

    500GB SSD

Whatever the price is is the price.

We can't advise on that - if you want to negotiate the price yourself, that's up to you.

    Sure you can.

The price is ultimately set by the seller. Just because Pogba is bought for £90m+ doesnt meant that he's worth £90m+.

Same with laptops. The Dell that I'm looking at is currently going for £1,499.99. Again, doesnt mean it's worth it. The Medion is going for £595 and yet you, yourself, recommended the Medion.

    And yeah, I will negotiate.
