So I've started a save with my usual starting points (unemployed, Sunday League player, no badges) and I'm one month into the Swedish season with IS Halmia. Which is about 3 weeks further than I've got into any other season on FM 17. :D

Won my first match, then lost 2, then conceded a late equalizer at the bottom side but finally getting a win. So I'm 2-1-2, but unfortunately the board want the team to reach the promotion playoff, and the media is picking us for 3rd.

Plus the club is losing money hand over fist (although I'm still well below the wage budget). And I've already cocked up a contract extension by not realizing projected player status (key player, first team player, etc.) is on the initial "promises" screen.

    Great success!

Playing the top team in the division. We've been playing OK with one up front (4-1-2-2-1 or 4-2-3-1) all season, and everyone we've played so far has run with a 4-4-2 or a 4-2-2-2 (basically just the 4-4-2 with the CMs deployed as DMs)

But I see our opponents typically go with a 3-4-1-2. So I devise our own 4-2-2-2 and attempt to exploit the flanks and counter. We get a first-half goal, and another early in the 2nd. We're up 2-0 in the 75th minute when I choose to pull us back from counter to defensive.

We give up 2 goals in the next 5 minutes, and then an 88th minute penalty to lose. :D

Been a while since I've been in this part of the forum. Quite a few new faces. :)

Haven't really got into FM17 but going to take another bash at it now. Going to use the same journeyman/no badges/Sunday League football approach, but with a couple changes: At least to start, I'll have all the English- (well, except ROI/WAL/NIR) and Spanish-speaking leagues loaded (figuring since FM gives us Yanquis fluency in English and en Espanol at the start). And historically I've avoided league where there's squad rules like "Two players in starting XI must be 23 years or younger", realizing that most of my saves I've looked for young players to stock my squad.

  4. I'm not sure how you would arrive at that valuation though.

The NFL of course has a "trade value chart" for draft picks, but AFAIK there's no similar thing in MLS. Plus, IRL the draft has lessened in importance as academies have come on line and begun churning out players.

  5. Anyway, haven't started a save yet because of the issue with the MLS scheduling. (SI taking a guess at what the scheduling will be like with Atlanta and Minnesota coming in). Maybe I'll start when MLS announces the fixture list (should be next month), and SI gets it coded in.

(Although when I linked to a Salt Lake blogger tweeting a couple days ago that their GM said 2 Homegrown slots are being added to the roster, one of the SI people said "This is good to know, but our license is for the 2016 season.")

Oh, something completely different. Building a team around a specific set of philosophies and tactics of one of my favourite coaches. The twist being that the coach is Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots, not a football(well, "our" football) coach.

Not even sure it's possible, but some of it should be convertible, picking hardworking team players, versatility, discipline and setting up separate tactics based on his defensive and offensive styles(hard enough in it's own right as the Patriots have played with many different styles of offence and defence).

I have some of it planned out, as I say, and an idea for a defensive(well, probably set to counter) tactic.

    "We're on to Southampton."
"What about your striker? He seemed to do his knee quite badly."
    "We're on to Southampton."
"But your defense just conceded 5 goals."
    "We're on to Southampton."

I'm going to be honest with you, I have no idea if it's possible to do a Youth Only challenge in the MLS so what I'm going to do is set the transfers to the DoF and personally, I'm only going to sign players from LA II and the LA Academy which are all separate clubs.

In theory, you should be able to (IIRC, there's no limit to how many homegrown players an MLS club can sign IRL. Dallas have gotten a fair bit of attention for how they're relying on their academy: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/nov/19/fc-dallas-mls-homegrown-players-academy )

But I dunno how well FM has it programmed (see the 31-game season nonsense)

A team could do well in either the Apertura or the Clausura and be absolutely trash in the other. In that case, a team that consisently did well in both halves (say they came 2nd in both) could top the overall points table and go straight into the Champions Playoff. However, if they win one half AND top the overall points table, they do get 2 chances to win it as they have qualified for both the playoff and the champions playoff. If they win the playoff, they are automatically declared 'overall champions'. It's all a bit confusing.

And people say we make sports complicated. :D
