They will play players out of position and play the same 11 all season, barring injuries, unless you do it manually. It's really poorly implemented.

Absolutely. The only reason for having reserve / U18 managers, is that you don't have to watch all of the games.

Pick the teams yourself & watch them - or highlights, when you like

  2. I noticed this happening with my reserves. The way around it is when you've been asked what players are available for the reserves, / U18's match go into the respective squad and select the team in the positions you want. If you don't have a full team but have e.g. two left backs, play the left back you want in position. The other will fill in one of the empty spots.

The reserve matches can be a useful tool for many of reasons: out of form 1st teamers, players coming back from injury, players needing some match fitness, useful youth players, players on trial etc.

My instinct, given the change to the Unity engine, is that we'll get some info a little earlier than usual and I'm specifically thinking about the specs needed to run FM25.

Other than that, I guess just be patient :D

Yeah, need to know the spec so I know if i'm robbin' Currys or holding a member of a pc spec builders family to ransom ;-)

Despite having a large squad (28), my U18 manager plays pretty much an identical team every game, and hardly ever brings on subs. For the record his attributes are: 14 for use of subs and 10 for squad rotation. The situation for the reserves team is similar, but a little bit better usage of the whole squad. It's obviously not the end of the world, but a bit annoying to have decent prospects in the U18s not get any game time whatsoever.

Anyone experience something similar? And is there a way to solve it without taking control myself as I find the 1st team more than enough time consuming.

Best thing I found is to pick the team myself but let him manage the games

Unfortunately not. When I right click them, the only thing that appears is their name. Left click on them, and there are no options to sign them at all on their profile. It's a shame. My current idea is to find players in the database with between 5 and 10 current/potential ability, but that defeats the fun a bit, as I don't really know how good the greyed out players are!

Maybe get your scout to look up a few players & only sign the ones that fit your project

Hahah! Thanks! Scared me for a minute! I've actually tried that and none of those work. :( When you arrange a friendly with your under 18s/21s, you get a bunch of generated players in there, but no option to sign them... Same with opposition teams. Can't sign the players. It's a real shame, as I thought it was a nice challenge idea too! Only other thing I can think of, is to try to find players with low ability/potential for now and sign them to the team, but that's quite hard to do without scouting etc! I just don't want to end up with a team of world beaters! Much more fun to try to win with crap! Appreciate the reply! I'll post an update if I find a way! Any other ideas would be welcome!

Apologies for the post below! Couldn't figure out how to reply on mobile with the quote!

Hmmm....i'm guessing you can't promote greyed out players from your under 18's / 21's to your 1st team either? I'll keep pondering. Good luck with your challenge :)

    Hello, everyone!

First post here, so sorry if I've done something wrong! I've been playing FM24 for a little bit now, and I'm looking for a way to make the game more challenging. I started in the 19th tier of English football and decided that I'd disable attributes and avoid signing players that I'm recommended, rather, try to work with an absolute threadbare squad, at least until a few youth prospects come through. I'd started previously in the 15th tier and got promoted 5 times, winning all but one game, and by big margins. It all felt too easy when I can sign people who've played several divisions higher!

So, when clicking on the team before selecting them to start with, I see more than 20 greyed out players, big squad. I start the game with them, and I only have 16 available. I sign them all to contracts, but I'm unable to generate more. Even if I arrange a friendly against my under 18s or under 21s, some appear in those squads, but I'm unable to sign them. I'd like to have, say, 20 players to choose from, as 16 is only a first XI and 5 subs. Not ideal. I'm aware that I can tick the option to add players to playable teams, but I doubt they'd be as bad as the greyed out players and I'd really like a challenge! Any ideas? Cheers.

This should be your first and last post. You should be banned! Just kidding, welcome to the forum. Sounds like a great challenge you've given yourself. The only things I can think of are checking your reserves, under 21's, under 18's teams (if you have them.) If there are no greyed out players there, maybe sign greyed out players from other teams in your league?

All the best with your challenge!

Although it might seem the club is "no better" than yours in current achievement/position terms, in fact it will likely have a higher reputation which is why the player is willing to alter his demands. Reputation is far too blunt a tool in FM and has been so - as @jozza800 implies - for ever.

Understand what you're saying but honestly, this has happened multiple times at a club with the same / worse reputation than mine. (I play LLM). Trust me, this is a real floor

With a very large database (145k players at start IIRC, first two divisions of most of Europe, all the way down for the top 6 plus extras plus a number of view only) there is a decent amount of transfer business happening... between AI clubs. Seeing players worse than mine being transferred for more than my offers is probably half the reason I sort of rage-quit.

A little off topic but sort of linked, it really annoys me when I offer a player X amount of wages, yet he wants more & a star player role. I cancel the deal, someone else comes in - no better than my club, & gets him for far less of a wage & a squad player role. That has happened to be too many times to mention.

No because if the game thinks they are a ‘star player’ then they are very likely to be better than everyone else in your squad.

Hmmm often but not always. I find some of them a nuisance when you're trying to give other players the odd game & they throw their toys out of the pram. Agree it's nice to have one or two but with the way fixtures pile up, rotation is necessary

Iis all about creating a balanced game world. So running a few leagues on full detail from each continent. Going into the advanced section and making sure parts of every continent are installed too. Using a large database.

The aim is to create a balanced game world where every continent is well represented. There are articles on this forum that go into much more detail.

Hmmm i'll take a look but i'm dubious that would work - especially with the numerous people that experience this issue, including @tezcatlipoca665 comment directly above

It's funny I read these types of threads but I don't see these problems in my games. I'm in season 2036 so a similar stage to you but I'm finding AI squad building better than ever.

Every now and then I will check games or teams just as you have and the AI are picking the right players they're rotating players in cup games or games against easier opposition they're resting tired players. When I look at their squads they are using the whole squad.

So I wonder why others don't have this experience and I think it's all down to the way you set your games up.  Football manager is such a large game and can be set up in literally thousands of different ways and I think a poorly balanced setup is the reason so many people don't get the experience I do.

Don't leave us all hanging. How do you set up? :)
