Is it?  [serious question]  Counter argument:  we want to test the effect of the 1-match boosts and not test how well each 'match preparation' session improves tactical familiarity, therefore we maximize tactical familiarity to take that out of the equation, otherwise the results of the test cannot separate out how much the results were influenced by TF vs. match-boost?

You literally cannot isolate the match boost because there will be a difference in fatigue vs. the team that didn't do the training.

I agree it is frustrating.  In one of my saves I had Moukoko not develop at all in 3 seasons at my club - not a single attribute - despite what I’d consider a well balanced training program and a healthy amount of match time.  I ended up selling him.  Yet in a different save I turned him into a world class striker.

The training module is far more complex than we sometimes appreciate.  Some may (with reason) call it random or unrealistic.  Perhaps there is room to make a tweak to the system so that targeted attribute development does bear a greater resemblance to what we ask our players to do.  I don’t know, but if that were to happen it’d need to come from SI’s own close links and reviews with real life clubs and how they develop actual players.

So when we talk of “unrealistic” attribute development is it really unrealistic or just our own view?  SI work closely with real clubs and their development module is based on those case studies.  Personally I have zero experience to say with any confidence what is or isn’t realistic, but I know SI do.  I imagine there’s room for improvement but that’s nothing more than my own supposition and knowing that SI are always looking at ways to improve the game in a realistic manner.

I understand that players in FM and in real life sometimes do not perform well in matches or do not improve despite training well.

The main takeaway is that if a training session says it works on attributes A, B, C but a test suggests that session in fact has zero impact on A, B, C and instead impacts attributes X, Y, and Z--that is a serious, serious problem that needs to be looked into by SI.

Why is it “absurd”?  Just because we want our players to do something doesn’t mean they will.  The training module has never been tell a player to train X and they do it, it’s way more complex than that.  As a (rhetorical) counter point - why are you, as the manager, constantly asking players to do something which they clearly aren’t capable of doing?  To quote Neil above, how is that “realistic”, bearing in mind that’s how training is designed?  Isn’t a manager who spends 10 seasons (or just 2 seasons without change) asking players to improve crossing without success absurd?

Yes. It's absurd. It's not realistic that multiple professional players at a club with world class facilities and some of the best coaches in the Premier League can't improve crossing by half or 1 point.

You are 100% putting words in my mouth. I've not said I was asking a bunch of players to do a training for 10 years or even 2 seasons on a constant basis. I was simply using WB-At and crossing as an example because the tactic I'm currently running uses that role so I have 4 senior players as well as players in the U teams on that PRD and regularly cycling through crossing as an additional focus, and utilizing att overlap and play from the back sessions--certainly the young players ought to be able to improve crossing from 9 to 10 or 11 if they're training it (and getting great training ratings, I may add). I'm not asking for their crossing to go from 11 to 19 in 3 months. Crossing is not the only attribute I've seen behave this way.

The point is that it's frustrating to know that session X may be having literally zero impact upon the attributes it lists.

  4. Without even mentioning the inadequate sample size, the trouble with attempting to isolate just match prep sessions or just set piece sessions is that it ignores so many factors that are supposedly linked together.

It's a mistake to run test with both teams at 100% tactical familiarity.

It's a mistake to ignore whether players are or are not on PRD and/or additional focus training.

It has been widely discussed that the match bumps do not stack, so running the set piece test with a bunch of attacking corner or attacking free kick sessions, according to what we supposedly know, shouldn't result in massive increases in goals from corners/FKs. What is worth investigating is whether this many sessions has bumped the attributes claimed by the card.

On top of the tactical familiarity flaw, the test does not account for morale, training happiness over the course of a season.

A better test of match prep and set piece sessions would run for multiple seasons with Team A and Team B set for identical training, excepting the match prep/set piece sessions, and equal, but lower than 100%, tactical familiarity at the beginning of each season. After watching several of the videos, I'm not prepared to completely throw the baby out with the bath water regarding match prep or set piece sessions.

What is significantly more concerning is the testing that suggests the training cards do not actually boost the attributes they claim to boost. I believe there may be something to this, as, anecdotally, I constantly see instances of targeted attributes barely increasing across a season or two in players that are in the 18-23 range. If I have wingbacks set to WB-At PRD with additional focus training set to crossing and I routinely run attacking overlap and play from the back sessions, it's absolutely absurd that I shouldn't see noticeable improvements in crossing, flair, passing, vision in at least some of those players and in most they barely move.

  5. Finally managed a CL victory in 2033-34 with PSV. An ugly win by way of penalties vs Barcelona. We made the CL final 2032-33 where we lost 2-1 to Manchester City.

CL victory sees us complete both stages 3 and 4 and what's remaining is Club World Ch'ship, 2 league titles, domestic cup, and a second Champions League victory in rep 4 league. RB Leipzig and Bayern jobs are open but Bundesliga is 4.5* league so I'm not sure if this counts? Only Ligue 1 and Belgian Pro League are 4* at the moment.

Yes, if the team is successful in a non-playable league then they will get promoted once again. The better the team is, the greater their chances of getting promoted into a playable league.

You're telling me the Jong team are participating in a league in the background despite it only showing me a friendly like every 6 weeks?

@riv3th3adSounds like a good save, CL is tough one, I landed a nice job at sporting and they had a nice squad and bit of money to spend so managed to win it there. Portugal the most likely league to win it in outside top 5 leagues

It was looking like Portugal might be the best spot for CL as the big clubs there seem to have the wage budget to make it perhaps easier. This journeyman has forced me to spend much more time than I normally do on scouting and recruiting--not my favorite or strongest area of the game. Getting better with it but still am not to the point where I have a usable second 11 and U23/18 squad filled with just-about-there players.

  8. Finally moved on from Young Boys and am part of the way through stage 3 of the challenge. We had scraped and clawed our way to the Champions League semifinal in 2029-30, going down to Liverpool on penalties after both legs finished 2-1 in favor of the home side.

Took the helm at PSV, who finished 2nd in the Eredivisie 2029-30. Still keeping primarily to 4-3-3, but working on featuring roles I had not really used at Vaduz or Young Boys. Have a striker with the absolute worst attitude and personality I've ever encountered in FM. Dreadfully inconsistent and can't handle even the slightest hint of more than warranted criticism. It's a shame as he has the attributes to be outstanding.

We were predicted to finish 2nd in 2030-31, won the Eredivisie as well as the Dutch Cup. Came through 2 rounds of Champions League playoffs to be drawn in a CL group with Young Boys because obviously that was going to happen! Qualified for the knockout stage but got handled by Bayern, though we did at least win the 2nd leg at home.

So far this weird journeyman has won the Swiss Challenge League once, Swiss Super League on multiple occasions, and the Eredivisie once. Won the Liechtensteiner Cup and Swiss Cup multiple times and the Dutch Cup once. Guided Young Boys to a Europa League win in 2028-29, beating Roma in the final. Funnily enough YB went through 3 Dutch sides, beating PSV in the 2nd Knockout Round, AZ in the quarterfinal, and Ajax in the semifinal. Champions League success has been elusive, reaching 1 quarterfinal and 1 semifinal to this point.

Happy to say that, despite 2 brushes with relegation, Vaduz survived the playoffs both times and have remained in the Swiss Super League since earning promotion in 2019-20.

  9. Still cracking away at this. I think I've overstayed at Young Boys (2nd club) as we've now hit this funny changing of the guard stage where two thirds of my midfield are out and their replacements are here and doing well but unlikely to make CL success imminent. I'm also beginning to have difficulty with release clauses and wages for several of the best players. Their agent demanding wages above what the board will allow and whatnot.

We did win the Europa League last season. Also went unbeaten in the league for the first time ever in FM. 35-1-0 with a 1-1 away draw to Basel. Lost the Super Cup to PSG this season. I thought I was going to have to abandon this as my save kept crashing on 6/20/2029 but after a few tries I was eventually able to save just before this date and then holiday through it and carry on. Nobody comes looking to hire me from the 3-3.5 rep leagues at this point. It's been all Bundesliga clubs and now Juventus so I guess I have to actively seek out my next move. Leaning toward Netherlands or Portugal due to wage structure.

I find this entire area of the game interface extremely frustrating and poorly thought out.

We can automatically set our players training intensity based on their tiredness...  and we get a recommendation from the physios...  but we can't just automatically set every player to follow the physio recommendation? So we have to go in there constantly and manually click that "Set intensity to physio recommendation" but inevitably we forget and don't realize until a player starts complaining about low training intensity. It's a mess.

I would just like to see an option to automatically set intensity to physio recommendation. As it is, I ignore my physio recommendations entirely because it's too much micromanagement required.

I suppose one could argue this is part of the management simulation aspect. Double checking training constantly. But sometimes you get in a groove and you're just wanting to move to the next match or get to the transfer window opening. It would be nice to have a way to be a bit more hands off with intensity changes, though.

I will say, I have been micromanaging training for all 4 squads at my club this season, and I have absolutely noticed times where the physio suggests double intensity and it looks like a horrible recommendation based on the players condition + the upcoming match schedule.

Wow, I think the Personality remain Un-change ? how can you improve it from Balanced to something Better?

Yes, mentoring group, primarily. I have also seen the personality of the player you choose to welcome the player to the club upon signing seemingly impact the personality of the incoming player--both positively and negatively.

I signed an 18 year old CM with Professional personality. I asked my CM with resolute personality, the most "good" personality option in my squad of a player high up in the hierarchy, to welcome him. Now half a season later the 18yo shows as "fairly professional" though he had not been a part of any mentoring group.

  12. You can create and save your own schedules.

Training --> Schedules --> Select Schedule --> + Create New Schedule (or recall a preset and edit)

After it is created and saved it will show up in the menu under "Custom Schedules"

Below is one I created to focus on offensive development of my fullbacks and you can see where this schedule shows up in the menu on the calendar.

  13. The ability to set the automatic training intensity/rest on a per player basis. For all my injury prone dudes that pick up a 1-3 day knock every few weeks, I really want to have them not go to double intensity, and I'd also like them to drop down to rest or half intensity after matches as needed without having to remember to manually do it following each match and re-adjust back to normal intensity a couple days later.

  14. Sierro and Collado developed a partnership last season, and while Sierro now mostly mentors U21's and doesn't play much, their partnership remains intact. What's piquing my interest is Collado and Lauper. For the last few seasons, these players have been starting in this tactic as AP-Su and DLP-De, respectively. They developed a partnership, but while Collado was out with a somewhat long injury, I started experimenting with CM-At in the AP-Su role as the player who came in to replace the injured Collado is a better shooter and worse dribbler. Now that Collado is back, it's showing Lauper as partnered with Collado but Collado does not show as partnered with him. Initially I put this down to the role change, but Collado and Sierro have played together in the CM-At + BBM configuration even less frequently than Lauper and Collado have played together.

  15. Man, is this challenge challenging!

I'm enjoying it but also hitting periods of high frustration. This is the first non-Premier League save I've ever done so it's like an entirely different game in many ways. I've had to put a lot of focus on scouting, recruiting, and contracts in ways I have not had to deal with before. Some of you in this thread and some of the people I've watched on Youtube and Twitch are so good playing the transfer market. That is definitely my weakest area in FM, but I guess I am beginning to improve at it out of necessity.

I basically have Young Boys cruising to the Swiss Super League title every year now, but we cannot do anything in the Champions League. I think we are good enough to possibly challenge for the Europa League but we keep going 2nd in the CL group stage and getting knocked out in the first knockout round without really being competitive in the tie. Last season we drew Man Utd in the first knockout round and had the good fortune of playing the first leg at home. We got an early goal and won the first leg 2-0 which helped us advance but this season we were again eliminated in the first knockout round. This time by RB Leipzig. We drew 0-0 in the first leg and lost 1-0 in Germany. The board are happy and the CL money is nice, but it would be nice to do a deeper run in the Europa League than rather than get bounced early from the CL.

It's probably time I should be moving to my third club but, as usual, I've grown attached to the league and several of the players I've been developing. We wrapped up the Super League title with 7 matches to go and still have the Swiss Cup semifinal to contest. I sold Sebastian Szymanski during the winter window for about 40% more than his listed value plus 1.5M in future fees and 25% of his next transfer fee. The board gave it an E despite the fact that we signed him on a free, had very productive seasons from him for 3 or 4 years, and he wanted to leave. I'd say a 19M sale + future fees is decent business. He was 27 or 28 and we weren't going to be able to afford his next contract. He's in China now on wages more than double my highest earner. I already signed his replacement and brought in another player who can cover either of my CM roles, AMC, or AML/R as needed--these players cost 18M combined. I imagine I am not too popular a figure in any corner of Belgrade at the moment as I also brought in a CB from Red Star for 7M earlier this season. It's nice for a change to be on the "good" side of release clauses much lower than they should be.

The only enticing jobs that are available or look likely to be available and still fitting the 3-3.5 league rep for this stage of the challenge are PSV and Feyenoord in the Eredivisie and Dinamo in Croatia. The job at LASK may be opening up, though they missed Europe completely this season and were floundering in the Europa Conference League group stage for several seasons prior to that so I'm not sure about moving there. Currently, they are sitting 2nd in the Austrian Premier Division so I'm uncertain why their manager is considered at risk. I'm not sure I have it in me right now to take over a new club and assess the rosters and do the whole squad-building phase at the moment so I may continue on with YB and see if we can't do something in Europe with my new Serbians or I may take some time away from this save.

On a side note, while Vaduz have had several managers since I departed they seem to have stabilized. Very happy to see them continue to do well.

Lastly, I believe the 2027/28 season in this save is the first time I have ever had a Model Citizen in my youth intake.

    The journey to this point

I'm doing a journeyman save and am currently at City in 2038. One of my previous clubs was Atlético. In the Champions league we play our first game with Atlético at their ground.

    Post match press conference:
Journalist: "You received a great reception from the Atlético supporters"

Me: "Yes, I enjoyed my time there. Atlético are a special team"

Pre match press conference before the return fixture:

Journalist: "Everybody knows that there's no love lost between you and Atlético"

    Me: "Hello ?????"

One of the areas that needs an overhaul, to be sure!

I am also doing a journeyman save where I left my first team after 4.5 seasons and getting them promoted to the top tier but the press always thinks I'm out for revenge. Now I just skip the press conference ahead of every time we play them.
