Oh, I don´t think so  if you do an excellent transfer market (using not just the attribute filters which are very limited) and have a balanced tactic (or a style that fits your players), you will win faster and more naturally than people that win "by exhaustion" or "as time goes by".

The game itself cannot be more intelligent than us, otherwise we would never win, I guess

    Haha. Fair point

I hate to disagree but Fifa is getting worse IMO. Less realistic year on year and no focus on single player game modes puts me off.

    It’s all about opinions:-)

I really think that the players do the tactic, not the opposite. If you have really great players and don´t do anything too strange, the quality of the players will overlay your tactic and you will win the same just because your players are too good for the opponents.

You see, I also read FM career updates on another forum and I have seen this many times: the FM player picks a 2nd division mid-table team, arrives with lots of difficulties at the 1st division, suffers for some time avoiding relegation with bad tactical choices and then starts to grow and win everything, even with his awful tactics.

Why? Because he is hiring better players and developing youngsters, and the IA never hires and develops as well as we do. So as time goes by, the human managers get this "natural advantage" even if they are not too good at the tactical side.

Tactic helps, of course, but players win :D

Which is a bit depressing! The only reason we win is the game isn’t very intelligent 😂

I was in discussion with a friend who doesn't play FM but loves Fifa career modes etc saying I believe he would enjoy FM. He came round so I could give him a run through of the basics and as a newcomer he was just totally overwhelmed. I started a new game with him and even turned on the tips and tricks but IMO they don't go deep enough. SI is in a funny place trying to get new people playing the game. Even myself as a player who has played at least 200 hours every year for the last 15 years or so I'm finding the micromanagement aspect of the newer versions highly frustrating. Having to change a corner tactic due to a sub is just annoying but not as annoying as conceding from it when you forget to change. Since finding this forum around a week ago ive definitely gained a deeper understanding of what works and what doesn't work however my results haven't indicated this. I created a tactic and within 7 seasons won the Champions League with Brighton, however if I put that tactic on this forum it would be seen as something that wouldn't logically make sense. 2 inside forwards on attack, advanced forward and advanced playmaker on attack. It shouldn't be working according to what I've learnt but its by far and away my most successful results which just adds to my confusion.

Really interesting and agree with everything you just said. I got Spurs  playing well by having 4 attackers on attack duty which is apparently a cardinal sin!
SI and FM fans will say it’s realistic there are no hard and fast rules. There’s many ways to skin a cat. But the ambiguity isn’t fun. I’ve played for 20 years but finding the matches strange these days. Not just results but the patterns of play seem odd. Eg Kane and Son hardly scoring.

In the match on this post I man marked on of the CFs. Many posters will say you shouldn’t do that (it pulls CDs) out of position). But I’ve asked 100 times what is man marking for if not to cancel the opponent biggest goal threat. SI need to explain these things. You should lose because you’ve been outsmarted, not because you don’t understand the exact positions of an IW,!!

fifa is getting better and better btw. FM will always be my game. FIFA for the kids but……..

What you do NOT do is have a knee jerk reaction and change your system just because of one loss, even if it was 6-1.

Watch the highlights back, is there anything you can learn?  What did you change during the game?  Why didn't that work?  Did you change change anything?  If not why not?

There may be lessons you can learn for the future, things you can alter IF you see a future match starting to go a similar way.  But don't change a winning formula just because of one result .

Thank you. You’re right. At half time I moved to deeper defence. WBs to FBs. They scored 2 more and we didn’t really have a chance. First half much more open.

I don’t mind shocking results. They do happen, very rarely, but do happen. This version seems spectacularly unforgiving. Again fine but I don’t feel armed with enough information from SI which is disappointing. that’s why the tactics forum is great.

Sometimes games like this do happen in FM, completely out of the blue games where nothing goes your way and you lose a game you think you should of won, but I'll try and help a little with how I understand this game. Obviously I don't know your save and team as well as you do so take everything with a pinch of salt. Maybe Kane could do with being on a slightly more attacking role as a striker? I'm not too sure who in this side if meant to be putting the goals away, as you don't have a goal scoring striker or an inside forward on either side. This isn't saying you won't score any goals like this but it could help making Kane a bit more attacking or even have Depay as an inside forward. It could also be helpful having one of Trippier or Pedri on the right side on an attacking duty, as otherwise I think it may look like your right side is a bit toothless. I'd like to know what your idea is behind focusing play through the middle, I've never personally tried it myself but would like to know your thinking behind it. I also do think as you acknowledged in a reply to another person that the 4231 does leave you somewhat open to counter attacks, personally I always go for a 433 with a DM, you could even have the exact same players in the exact same roles but just move the midfielders all down a tad, leaving Skipp to sit and be an out and out sitter in front of the defence who can hopefully help prevent counter attacks.

Interesting points. Thank you! Whenever I put Kane more advanced it doesn’t seem to help. His weakest attribute is his speed. I think IRL he’s a perfect DLF or CF. It just doesn’t translate on21.
my fear with putting either WB on attack is I leave myself even more open to counter. Pedri on attack would mean a lot of attacking player instructions, 3 out of 4…

in my experience 433 always undercooks my attack. How do you play that system. Would be really interested to see.

I did attack through middle as I had 3 there and wolves 2. Only reason. It didn’t work 😂

  6. cheers for speedy reply.
It’s working well. 4th in league. Quarters of CL. biggest defeat was by 2 goals.

I get what you’re saying about transitions.
what’s your advice? If I play deeper. I bring my forward line back and make my attack weaker. Can a mezzala not work in a 2? But I’ve seen the CPU do that v successfully.

4231 by definition leaves you open to counter yes?

oh and the stats aren’t always right. He missed 3 good chances. He is absurdly average in 21. Wish IRL too then I’d be happier selling him

Thought i'd join in on this. I like most look forward each year to FM Touch coming out for iOS - especially on the ipad. This years iteration has been very disappointing for me both from the game, and also from developer support. I dont have any problems with the match engine. It runs perfectly on my iPad with no issues. The problem i have is the bugs that exist in the game but didnt get fixed. I'm no developer, but for SI to drop their update with DB updates and not fixed any of the major bugs is a massive kick in the teeth especially after we drop £20 on it or more. We expect full support from the Devs and they should look to resolve these issues. I've logged 10 or more bugs and then was told that no more updates will be getting released. Not even to fix these. I've not played since February now as i feel i dont get the satisfaction from it with the UI bugs. Oh and one feature that was added to this years edition also had "Training" but there wasnt any info on how it worked etc. So not sure if it was completely finished.

I am however giving SI the benefit of the doubt here and am hoping that due to covid they were unable to fix these bugs..... who knows. I do expect the next game to be fixed though or else i wont be buying again.

Should SI require any help with beta testing before going live though i am happy to assist.

Unfortunately I completely agree. I would go further still. FMT should be really focused on the match. Tactics and transfers is it’s MO. so why on earth have they stripped the match back? Less information, no highlights, can’t click on players to see the name, inferior graphics to a version 5 years ago. I don’t know who runs development of FMT on iPad but they’re making it worse. Games should improve. For several years now FMT has been going backwards.

you say the ME is good. I would dispute that. It’s barely any better than 17. For years it was terrible. What are they doing?

Every year we give them £20 hoping the game reaches past glories. Every year it spectacularly fails.

FMM and full fat move forward. FMT gets worse. They need to invest in its uniqueness. They’re letting it drift.

  8. However I play him he barely scores and rarely gets assists. He has no relationship with Son which shows a complete lack of football awareness. Son is also poor. Their attributes are sensational so it’s something hidden that’s blocking their performances. I think the developers have reduced their abilities as they were too overpowered on the first version.

but it’s rubbish. Makes for so so so many boring matches. Which sums FMT up.

Well it seems like FM2021 will be my last FM game...I am playing a football game and will not tolerate political minded changes.

I find it annoying -not only in FM- that men are pushed for political reasons to support women's football. Women don't watch football and don't play FM (compared to men) so basically men need to fill in for them. The fact that SI does not want to make a stand alone women's game and make it face the market tells a lot about women's football.

Anyway, if Miles doesn't want my money I'm certainly not giving it to him.

Women don’t watch football!? Where do you live? Iran?? Saudi Arabia?? Where women are allowed to watch football(pretty much everywhere) the % mix difference men and women watching is narrowing at speed.
football participation amongst girls is surging.

you’re on the wrong side of history, SI will be on the right side.

  10. 14 minutes ago, Bababui said:

As usual Miles isnt doing much more than virtue signalling here. The way the current FM is structured, solo play and a long tern commitment of time, is heavily weighted to male gaming. According to this study https://www.radford.edu/~mzorrilla2/thesis/differencesinplay.html women prefer games with '.. rich social interactions in computer games.' He hasnt spoken of any changes to the game that will make it more attractive to women. One thing SI could do is create a multiplayer mode with online leagues that might be more attractive to women and the way they prefer to game.

Your inspirational words suggest genders think as one. Strange then that I find everything you say to be complete rubbish, despite the fact we’re both male and therefore identical.

    But why. Seriously why?

Why don't you try and fix the problems (let's try one year without 3 patches before the game runs more or less stable) rather than introducing soemthing that will quickly fade away. Sure people will probably try and play it for a short period of time, but will lose interest, just like in real life, as womens football is boring, slow, not that technincally and just well boring.

But why not introduce the whole lot from the beginning? Let's say from the age of 5 or 6,both girls and boys so we can get the proper feeling of everything. of and don't fprget to add in the deaf leagues, the gay leagues etc etc.

For Gods sake take your prejudice back to Twitter/ insta etc etc. It’s not welcome here.

FM represents many lower leagues that don’t play technically brilliant football but doubt you’ve ever complained about that. Women’s football is accelerating at pace and it’s great that FM are looking to acknowledge that.

as for deaf leagues and gay leagues why even post that? Shows how unpleasant you are.

  12. So this time it’s completely broken instructions on swapping positions. Which continues after instructions cancelled and ignores the designated role regularly.

what happened this year guys?? Underfunded? Overworked? Just CBAd??

So many gaps, holes, issues. So much removed. So much dilution of quality with updates after first version.

you’ll never acknowledge which is fair enough. Can’t admit to bringing out a broken game but really must do much much much better.

  13. I play FMT on iPad but same ME and tactics etc so full fat opinion welcome.

ive had about 15 saves with Spurs. Kane and Son rarely score. I’ve played a full range of tactics and still we lose regularly. My most recent (under tactical advice from a friendly forum poster) I was bottom with 1 win after 15 games and Kane with 1 goal.

my defence is abject. Dier, Lloris and Alderweiled often giving the ball away.
attack toothless. My mf pairing of ndombele and holjberg got overrun by those giants of football, Fulham, in my last game.

im not posting my tactics, generally 4231 with Kane a complete forward attacking as there is always a lot of advice to tweak this and that but it can be contradictory, football is about different opinions.

so who has had success with Spurs and how???

  14. For all the 21 love here I can counter with several great things about 17. animations far superior, creativity far superior, crossing far superior, lighting. Far superior etc etc.
bottom line is that a game 4 years newer should be significantly better. In many ways it’s not. How does a studio balls that up?

and yes it’s about opinions and mine isn’t right or wrong, and neither are yours. But you have to admit there is a big fan base for 17 and you have to ask why. It’s not just cos it’s easy 😂. Just been beaten by Man U and I loved it. Could easily identify the structural problems and conceded to the better team.

I had it with 21 when my  cross got blocked for 500000th time and Patrick  Bamford ran from just outside his own box, skinning 4 of my players and scored a worldly from 35 yards. 21 like all iterations since 17 has traded individual realism for…..well I don’t know what for. I refer to the joke of an under 17 GK for Liverpool being their top scorer in someone’s save in FM20.

I believe we have to challenge SI. they have no competition. FMT on iPad Pro is buggy, features removed and less playable than a game from 4 years ago. Apparently full fat is better, which I don’t have the time to play.

  15. OMG just downloaded 17 again. It looks and feels like a football match in a way SI have never replicated!
anyone got a player update file?

whatever SI did between 17 and 18 was a bad decision I have to say. Only just getting back to near those levels.

crosses not permanently blocked, inventive play, great movement, last ditch tackles. And it looks fab. Not perfect ofc but the closest they got! It’s actually football.

I'd say the main tool missing is boosting morale (which you do get a chance to address on bad losing runs when the assistant manager pops up with a team meeting in your inbox). Apart from that you'll probably have to spend some time on your tactics in my opinion. Check out the manner of goals you're conceding. Are you playing a high line and the opposition is just punting the ball from deep and taking advantage of slow defenders?

I'd suggest trying out a short save (maybe a year) with a big club/club you're familiar with to experiment tactically and see what works.

On the contrary, I've actually found this version more enjoyable than the last two.

And I’ve got no dispute with you enjoying it. Happy to hear tbh. I think the ME is significantly better but the gameplay and impact of decisions seems bad. I’ve been told a lot of this is related to my tactics. However im playing v similar tactics to what I’ve always done (pretty successful history) and much weaker teams seem to destroy mine. Vicious circle losing runs are frequent and yes you assman does pop up twice a year to offer boosts to morale but they’re rare and pretty weak interventions.

19 and 20 had awful repetitive MEs. I can’t accuse 21 of this. I just think it’s losing its way by sticking so adherently to full fat ME.

  17. Yh there are some serious issues with Touch this year. It matches the full ME but as that develops it needs more tools to impact the match which aren’t available in FMT. I’ve gone on some ridiculous losing streaks (9 games lost in a row with Spurs, after a good start to season ). It places a lot of importance around morale but it’s something you can’t really change on FMT.

the game is so poor this year that some people on the forum have privately messaged me to suggest the developers have deliberately made it rubbish so it doesn’t canabalise full fat sales. I don’t agree with that but the fact some people are even suggesting it goes to show how bad the game is.

oh and saying it feels like hard work is exactly how I felt before deleting the game. It is hard work. No pleasure at all. Because whatever you do those bad results happen and whatever your instructions the players don’t respond.

    hope you find a solution.

I think in that tactic you are too cautious if anything, a lower LOE with a balanced mentality will likely see you too deep. You would be allowing the Sheffield Utd WBs to advance too much into your own half

I had a quick look at Spurs squad earlier, they have a good midfield to play a 4-3-3 and utilise a mid-block with some counter pressing (honestly it's undeniable the game favours it so I feel it's daft to not use it if your players are capable), Hojberg is a good ball winner and Lo Celso is surprisingly competent defensively. This way you can protect the cart horses in defence while engaging the opposition a bit so they aren't dominating you. I think with a 4-3-3 you can free Ndombele and allow him to link up with the front 3 (which if you can get Bale/Son fit you have arguably the best front three in the PL).

You just haven't got the balance right in either set up. Both tactics are too predictable but the difference is one you are exposing your slow defence and the other you are set up too passively (especially for a club like Spurs, this is essentially what got Jose fired).

In fairness Spurs get beat by average sides now and then, their squad in the first season is pretty shocking and needs a bit of work. If you can stick at it and try to make a tactic based on the advice you're given here I think you can make it work long term

My best save to date was pre jan transfer Window where Spurs had some cash and I bought 2 CBs- it certainly is a big problem area for us IRL and in the game.
it’s good advice again. I think my aim has to be get thru first season, try to win Euro league and then build.
kane and son are woefully underpowered but I have to get through it.

    CHEERS!

You're just changing things for the sake of it now, why wing play exactly? This tactic looks like the other one instead now you have Dele in a more mobile role and you're playing kick and rush football. The wing play preset doesn't have an AP in the middle so why have you chosen it? He's hardly going to see much of the ball (plus you've fallen into the trap of having limited numbers in the box again)

You are motivating me to try a save with Spurs, I feel you're completely misusing the squad tbh

I was just trying random things. I understand the attacking points but defensively, despite more caution, we’re still conceding what I think is an utterly unrealistic number of chances. I think there is a serious flaw on the FMT ME this year. As I have mentioned above. I know my tactics are sometimes flawed but it feels like very average teams can tear you apart in quite an unrealistic way. I think this is mitigated on full fat but really exposed on FM Touch

  20. 16 minutes ago, NotSoSpecialOne said:

Much like real life, this Spurs squad just isn't very good and it seems like you no longer have Son on top of that as well (or he's at least out injured).

Whilst it is doable to win the league with the starting squad, you need a helluva lot to go your way. Top 6, maybe squeaking into top 4, is a more realistic expectation whilst your building this Spurs team.

Spot on. He’s injured. As is bale. For some reason this year in multiple saves and tactics I’ve really struggled to get Kane and son scoring. Kane misses loads of pens and seems to rarely get chances. Other versions were much more generous with him, although his attributes are world class.

funnily enough in my very first league match of my first save on 21 (before any updates). I beat WBA 11-0 with Son scoring 8 goals, mostly assisted by Kane. I posted it on the forum saying I love the new game haha. I think the developers realised (I’m sure without my input) they were overpowered but have gone too far the other way.

  21. 59 minutes ago, plcarlos said:

IRL does not transfer to FM. I wish it did, but i've never seen Kane even attempt some of the worldie Goals\Assists he can do IRL. You need to be a bit more realistic in that regard.

That also applies to FM vs IRL when it come to a 3 vs 1. If they defend  close, Kane's FM Physicals are not that good to get away from them.

1 Dimensional in that both Full-backs have the same role. the 1 Winger gets forward and the the other just crosses. There's 1 target in the box. There's only 1 route to the box, and limited players attacking the box.

I play the full version on PC, have never played the mobile. But I tend to push for league sometimes and normally end up 4th or so. Spurs in FM are a work in progress. It's 2-3 seasons to get anywhere really, and you'll have some real schokers along the way. It's painful, But I play a LONG save, and I'm heavily focused on youth development.

I played a 4-2-3-1 Positive. NO TI's. I'd advise the same. TI's can overcomplicate a lot. Below is what I started out as:

                           DLF-A\S

    IF-A\S          AMC-S\SS           W-S

                   CM-D DLP-S\CM-S

    FB-A\WB-S    CD-D   CD-D    FB-S

Now a lot of that was based on player traits, and what I saw in matches. Example a player with Gets-Foward often will sometimes get forward more that the Support role they are in. Sometimes I dropped the IF-A to IF-S and AMC to SS along with Kane as the DLF-S. These were more changes vs lower teams to create space to attack. DLP-S vs CM-S is still toy with now 4 years in. the DLP is a magent TO the ball and CM-S is more central. Of course, seeing this allows me to react accordingly.

You've gone the complete opposite in tacticts now. Do you want results or a style of play?

BWM-D does not hold as much as we think and can be a risk in the middle. Dier shold not be played as a cover. The flanks will get exposed, and you'd get hit on the counter, which is what the opposition has so many quality shots.

That’s great to read. Interesting. A lot of advice just to completely drop TIs.

Spurs definitely are a tough proposition. Hence why we can’t find a new manager 😂

I know it’s not real life but a simulation of that. To me, on iPad, the game felt more real a few years ago. It’s important to stress that tablet FMT is not FM mobile. The ME is identical to full fat. But I do think the tablet version is struggling to keep pace. To genuinely prepare for a match so much input is required which FM touch doesn’t provide
