That's one thing I think the current FM tactics system is particularly bad at representing - fluidity within systems. I gave the example of a midfield pairing where, when you're attacking, you'd want one to go with the attack and one to stay and protect. But you don't always want it being the same one who goes. In real football, a player would look at his midfield partner and decide whether or not to go based on the other's positioning. That doesn't seem to be possible in FM. Maybe it's just that I'm only ever seeing examples where it goes wrong (which does happen IRL) but players don't seem to incorporate that sort of flexibility.

Yes it is a shame and doesn't feel rewarding when you can't let something that is well worked out work.

Sorry, I'm not really familiar with Ten Haag's Ajax, did they play with inverted wingbacks?

Mazraoui, played like a inverted wingback. Blind playing on the left hand side often went inside so they were building up with 3 atb. But there was a lot of variation of the 3 players playing out of the back. Dm Alvarez dropping in between for example.

Which part did you struggle with last year?

I tried to replicate Ten Hag's Ajax. But how Antony played for them i couldn't replicate, Also the wingbacks would constantly spam crosses which i didn't want. Gave up on it then because it didn't feel rewarding and I was better of with plug and play.

My idea back in 2014 (before Pep did it, I'll have you know), was to shorten the transition distances by having the fullbacks come inside to act as auxiliary midfielders and keeping the wide players on the flanks thereby allowing the two central midfielders to provide the central thrust and support to the 9. So instead you get something like this:

I tried this on FM22, Couldn't get it to work, a real shame.

    A Mercantile Approach

Welcome to my first FM22 thread, quite belatedly. It looked like FM22 would be the first fm since I started playing with FM 2009 that I would skip, for a variety of reasons, but in the end I just couldn't away for ever. :onmehead:

I have had a variety of careers over the years on these forums, mostly long-term one club saves in smaller countries like Andorra, Kosovo, Estonia and Malta. This time, however, I am planning something different: a multi-club, multi-country save. First, some context.

In my professional work as a researcher and my academic background in history, for the last month or so I have been researching the history of Dutch wine merchants in the 17th and 18th century for a client. Not particularly relevant here, but it has inspired me to start a FM save with a mercantile approach.

I went for a different historic mercantile inspiration: the Hanseatic League. This was a network of cities and city-states that built a mercantile empire from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern period in Europe, especially in northern Germany, the eastern Netherlands, northern Poland, southern Scandinavia and the Baltics.

I plan for this to be a multi-club save, managing in these various countries of the Hanseatic League and only in clubs located in the cities above. The approach everywhere will be a mercantile one: I want to make the clubs I manage rich. Therefore I will try to buy cheap players with potential and sell them on for profit. Winning some prize money will also be helpful :)

I clicked the "pick a team for me" until a team came up in one of the cities on the map above, and it turned out to be a good starting position. VVV Venlo plays in the Dutch second tier, the Keuken Kampioen Divisie.

During the first season, I'll first try to acclimatise to the club and to this new version of the game, and of course there isn't much money to be spent yet.

We are predicted to finish in 6th position; which would be a play-off spot. The top 2 get promoted automatically. I would very much like to get promoted, if only for the better money in the Eredivisie.

    Let's get into it

Maybe an interesting addition, although they do not have a professional football club, Oldenzaal used to be part of the Hanze too. One of the few cities not located next to the water.

I was going t suggest this to @MH00 surely you can purchase players nationally for over the odds with the hope that they will then invest the monies wisely?

I have been doing this to a few Polish prospects, but there are not a lot of really bright prospects. I make sure to always overpay a bit, haven't checked their transfers but not once did a team make it to the EL and barely anyone to the Conference so i guess it doesn't help that much.

You still have lots of room for growth though, so I wasn't suggesting it for you, Matty. More @MH00 who doesn't seem to have a thread.

Yeah i do want to go to another team, but i don't really know how much of the achievements are due to me. If i leave and a AI manager takes over maybe he won't get trough the preliminary rounds of the CL. Making us lose points in the coefficients and undoing my progress. Thats where i'm afraid of.

That's really impressive and also real unfortunate at the same time!

How are you doing in relation to the rest of the save? What is the country ranked in relation to the nation coefficients and also rankings?

Are you also manager of the National team?

Yes I am the manager of Poland too. We got 3rd in the 2026 world cup, but since then Lewandowski retired so we have to see how we do now. Poland is 15th in nation coefficients and also 15th in the world rankings, Lechia as a club is 44th in coefficients. Just finished the 2028 season and got my 6th consecutive title, might actually manage another polish team because becoming champions isn't really a challenge anymore. I do want to get out of the CL group stage though. Financially we are looking great too, i added the finances as a picture.

We aren't even going to talk about the draw...ok we will!

I'm doing a build a nation save with Lechia Gdansk, we are in 2027 right now but haven't gotten to the cl knockouts once. These draws as 4th seeded teams are impossible. Had 10 points this year in a group with Barca, Chelsea and Monaco. Still only got 3rd. The CL really is a pain in the ass.
