  1. Calabria's a great example. How often do you see the big Italian players leave for the Premier League, or La Liga? I can maybe count a handful - and even then the main driver of that was when Juventus were relegated following Calciopoli. FM sees it purely in terms of 'bigger leagues' ignoring their current club's achievements, it's mind boggling.

I'm determined not to lose anyone this window - the only immediate risk is Tomiyasu who has 18 months left on his deal and won't sign a new one. Liverpool had the gall to offer £20 million for a £45 million rated defender - less that what I payed for him!

I do need to start planning for losses in the summer though. I'm expecting to lose at least one of my starting midfield trio. I'll need to review RB options.
Luckily my forwards, other defenders, or Donnarumma have drawn any offers :')

  2. Liverpool have moved for Tonali and Calabria - both were unhappy when I negotiated to stupid prices. Thankfully, I've been able to send Andrea Belotti to beat them up and now they're happy to stay (until another offer comes in).

EDIT: Now Tomiyasu aswell. Andrea Belotti's superb.

Kessie's (EDIT: and now Bennacer) not happy that I rejected Barcelona. I don't get why they think I'll let my key players leave in the middle of a season.

  3. I've made it to January in my 4th season, so figured it's worth posting a proper update.

    Serie A
Currently top of the Serie A after 15 games. We've, quite ludicrously, only conceded three goals in the league this season.

    • It's Juventus' turn to push hard this year. After scraping top four the previous year, Jorge Jesus spent big on Nathaniel Nandez and Nelson Semedo - the pair forging an impressive partnership on the right-hand side of their aggressive 4-2-4 system. You typically don't see a team this aggressive in Italy!
    • Joachim Low's Napoli remaining fairly consistent, despite losing key defender Koulibaly. They've replaced him with Nestor Araujo and he's not missed a beat.
    • Roma still up there, having lost Nandez to Juventus, and Veretout to PSG. They spent big on Ezequel Barco and Jason, but it's Lovro Majer who's stepped up to be their key midfielder.
    • Last year's rivals Inter have made a much slower start despite adding quality to their squad in the summer.
    • Lazio have spent a small fortune rebuilding their side, with Hateboer, Roca, Berardi looking the key additions.

    Champions League

We topped a fairly straight-forward Group A. Regular contenders Man Utd providing the only threat - rocking most of their typical squad along with quality such as Kimmich (World XI RB despite playing midfield) and goal machine Haaland.

Next up is our annual tradition of playing Carlo Ancelotti's Barcelona in the first knockout round. They're still hanging onto the old guard such as Messi, Busquets, Pique and Alba, but they're now very much built around Griezmann, Rodri and some incredible young talent in Moriba, Fati, Kulusevski and Pedri.

    Cups
We won the European Super Cup for the second time in three years with a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich. Italian Super Cup is yet to be played, and we've been drawn against Claudio Ranieri's Sampdoria in the Italian Cup.

    Awards
Me! - Serie A Manager's Manager of the Year
Gianluigi Donnarumma wins World Golden Glove, World Goalkeeper of the Year (his third consecutive year winning both awards!)
Donnarumma and Zaniolo both made the World Team of the Year (Quite interestingly, Sergio Ramos and Ronaldo are both in there aswell - both 38 years old, both at Real Madrid. Absolute machines!)
Bennacer makes the African XI of the Year, coming third in the midfielder of the year behind Salah and Mane.
Tomiyasu wins Asian Footballer of the Year

    Squad Update
The squad has proved fairly stable since my update at the start.

    • The Goalkeeping situation is as per, Gianluigi Donnarumma is continually proving to be the best goalkeeper in football. Sirigu has been used in club competitions and has been largely solid when called upon. Antonio Donnarumma remains third choice keeper, starting for the U20s. Younger options Bianchi (4.5*), Jungdal and Plizzari are all gaining minutes out on loan.
    • At Full Back, Tomiyasu and Calabria are still duking it out for the RB position. At LB Pellegrini has taken Hernandez' mantle as an absolute force of nature - racking up goals and assists. His understudy, Calafiori isn't doing badly either.
    • Centrebacks, Papetti and Romagnoli remain the first choice, backed up by Ahmedhodzic. Papetti in particular has impressed, becoming a regular in the national team's back three.
    • Midfield is as solid as ever; Bennacer, Tonali and Kessie remains the first choice but Locatelli and Rovella are rotated in heavily. Gagliardini is used when a specialist ball-winner is required. As mentioned, youngster Claudio Pinato has looked very impressive when called upon.
    • In Attacking Midfield, Zaniolo has really stepped up and is proving himself to be a World Class footballer. Castrovilli, Maldini and Vignato are battling it out for the other spot, with veteran Gomez being called upon as an impact sub.
    • Up top, we suffered a blow when Belotti was ruled out for seven weeks, requiring me to call upon youngsters Colombo and Pellegri. Colombo has generally impressed, working his way into the National Team but I feel he's better in a pairing. Bargain bin signing Pellegri has proved a great addition, popping up with goals as a starting striker in low pressure games and off the bench in league games - he seems more suited to the lone striker I typically use.

No apparent transfer plans for this window, but several players are drawing interest from the Premier League, La Liga and PSG so I have to be cautious.

Moriba and Esposito are filthy signings! I'm eyeing Esposito as he's moved to Sevilla on my save, though not really needing a striker at the moment. :')

So I've started blooding this guy into the first team and he's an absolute animal. Bring him off the bench against Sassuolo and he drills a 25 yard screamer in. He starts against Sporting Lisbon, two assists. Bring him in against Crotone, another assist. If I can get his dribbling up, he'll be insane.

Lads. After a succesful and enjoyable Roma save last year (And me getting tired of everyone in the Premier League playing 5 at the back or 4 at the back with 2 defensive midfielders and the like), I'm looking into perhaps going for another Serie A save for the final patch.

Was personally looking into restoring AC Milan towards the glory years with some good foundations being there in Tonali, Donnaruma and Leao, but Inter with players like Lautaro and Barella are an attractive challenge too.

How is the long-term perspective in the Serie A? I know last edition there were still plenty of teams playing their own game so all the games didn't feel the same, but in the Premier League this edition the moment you achieve a bit of success everyone parks a bus that would make MOurinho envious. I'd love to hear your experiences.

There's plenty of good sides to look at - I've had a blast with AC Milan on this version, and Inter look very strong. The hardest part is definitely keeping hold of your players, as EPL, La Liga and PSG are generally just more attractive to players. There's also definite cases of bus-parking aswell, but you could say that's just Italy.

I've personally had more enjoyment out of setting 'challenges' - I primarily go for players based in Italy, and try to avoid spending silly figures to compete as it wouldn't happen in current Serie A.

  6. One slight change to the squad before the new season. Nikola Milenkovic departs for Real Madrid for £55mill + 40% Sell On. He wanted me to accept Madrid's offer, and while he was generally rock solid for me, I did feel he was prone to the occasional lapse. While I did bemoan that Gianluca Mancini moved from Chelsea to Atletico just days before, it means I can fully push Papetti as the starting centre back alongside Romagnoli, and creates a squad position for Claudio Morrone once he returns from his loan at Verona. Ahmedhovic will move up to 3rd choice centre back, with Takehiro Tomiyasu also capable of slotting in if required.

A couple of other bids came in - Bayern tried for Locatelli, and Atletico for Ahmedhovic but I'm not interesting in selling either at the moment.

On paper, we're not as strong as last season, but I expected a level of transition going into the season as I create spaces for emerging talent. We're still comfortably the strongest side in Italy, and more than capable of challenging for the Champions League. Let's see how it goes! :)

Our Serie A campaign opens with two solid wins. 1-0 against Cagliari, and 4-1 against Brescia. I don't know if the match engine's changed since the update, but our attacking play in possession's looking rather good early on!

    Picture1.png

The Champions League draw sees us in a group with Man Utd, RB Salzburg and Sporting Lisbon. Our clash with Man Utd and Erling Haaland is becoming an annual thing - lovely!

  7. What sort of system are you playing @goonergez? From my time in the Serie A, the hardest thing about it is how so many teams play 5 at the back formations, with a DM, horrible to break down systems.

If you're attacking those, without the quality to break them down - you're going to struggle. I've seen my Milan side struggle to break down teams like Lazio with their 5-3-2 - crosses just don't touch them...

  8. Hoovering them up from our rivals on intake day! Bianchi and Scaramelli are from our academy - I know you've got Galli at Parma; he's doing great things here!

Annoying thing with Scaramelli is that he's only an accomplished centre forward, despite his skill set, he's naturally a right winger. I'm trying to force teams to play him upfront when he goes on loan, but it never happens! :(

I'm not seeing any release clauses like that yet but will keep an eye out for them. Locatelli is valued at £23m and they start the bidding at £62m when I enquired. Rovella is currently way out of reach too.

Colombo is on my shortlist mainly due to being young and Italian but they want £5m rising to £6m to take him away ahead of the 2021/22 season. With my budget (most of it reserved for my central midfielder), and as he would be only fighting for 3rd/4th choice striker role along with my own prospect Adorante (21) it may not be worth the investment yet.

Here are the Italian strikers on my radar. Belotti would be the dream, but way out of reach. There are a mix of ages and abilities, some would be massive punts for sure

That's fair, Adorante looks a great prospect aswell tbf!

    Here's Colombo on mine;

Takahiro Tomiyasu, Sandro Tonali, Franck Kessie, Nicolo Rovella, Manuel Locatelli, Gaetano Castrovilli, Nicolo Zaniolo, Daniel Maldini and Andrea Belotti are all players I have looked at, tried to sign, or hope to sign. Roberto Gagliardini was on loan in my first Parma season with an agreed fee but he wouldn't join and won't return on loan even though he has been put in the Inter U20 squad.

All of the above have been great for me. Keep an eye on Lorenzo Colombo aswell, I sent him to Monza on loan in season 2 and he was Serie A's 2nd top scorer behind Belotti. Popped up with 15 for me this year even while playing understudy.
I was able to snag Locatelli and Rovella fairly cheaply due to release clauses (Locatelli £20mill for a team playing in Europe, and Rovella for £5mill(ish?) due to a relegation release clause) - both playing 30+ games for me this season.

I've got some incredible deals by ripping players from underperforming teams.

I am getting through seasons quickly! I'm working but I get home at like 1pm and then play through til bed time! I'm racking up like 8-9 hours a day! Hopefully I can make my team as dominant as yours! That was a great season for your team!

Can't fault that, I'll play regularly for a few days then stop for like a month! :') Thank you!

A great season, congrats. I guess your motivation is to try and repeat those feats again this year?

Pellegrini and Calafiori are ones for me to keep an eye on for Parma.

I think so - a lot of our mainstays had attracted attention from the Premier League/La Liga in January so I was expecting to lose a few of them, and have more of a transition season, but up to now only Hernandez is leaving (£90mill to Chelsea).

I managed to sign Pellegrini for silly money in my second season (£1.4mill) and he's really been excellent for me, keep an eye on Juventus transfer listing him following his loan. Calafiori was considerably more expensive (£26million), but between them they lock down the LB position for years to come.

I've only made one addition to the squad this summer, I've picked up Pietro Pellegri from Monaco for £950k - I've occasionally been using a two striker system when chasing a game, and I only have Belotti and Colombo. Pellegri fits a similar mould to my other strikers, happy to sit on the bench, I don't have to register him due to his age, and I should be able to turn a profit on him if he flops.

First Team Squad looks like this going into Season 4:

    Goalkeepers
    Gianluigi Donnarumma, Salvatore Sirigu

    Defenders
Luca Pellegrini, Riccardo Calafiori, Davide Calabria, Takahiro Tomiyasu
Alessio Romagnoli, Andrea Papetti, Nikola Milenkovic, Anel Ahmedhodzic

    Midfielders
Sandro Tonali, Ismael Bennacer, Franck Kessie
Roberto Gagliardini, Nicolo Rovella, Manuel Locatelli

    Attacking Midfielders
Gaetano Castrovilli, Nicolo Zaniolo, Daniel Maldini
    Emanuel Viganto, Alejandro Gomez

    Forwards
Andrea Belotti, Lorenzo Colombo, Pietro Pellegri

  12. So yeah, it was a tremendous season last year. I was a bit gutted we didn't manage an invincible league season, losing to Atalanta with a couple of games left but there's a lot of great results in there. The 5-0 against Inter on the last day was a shocker as they've really pushed me all season - the trophy presentation at the San Siro will have been something else! :')

I'm delighted we managed to win the CL losing in last year's Final. Nicolo Zaniolo scoring the extra time winner. Poor Pep didn't even make the post-match interview, getting sacked in the tunnel - his Goalkeeping Coach took it.

In terms of squad building, I'm not expecting major surgery. Theo Hernandez is agitating for a move to Chelsea (as he did last summer), so it's likely that he'll move on - should that happen we'll be well prepared, Luca Pellegrini has developed into Italy's starting left back, while Riccardo Calafiori was signed last summer in anticipation - and now has a full Serie A season under his belt following an impressive spell at Monza.

Franco Vazquez will also be leaving in the summer when his contract expires. He proved to be one of my best signings, for a mere £1million in my first season, he offered 10 goals/assists a year in a squad role. At 34, he's deteriorated physically to a point that he couldn't get into the squad regularly enough to justify keeping him.

  13. Looks like a great start, will be following as I've had a blast playing in the Serie A this year!

Federico Chiesia and Marcus Thuram would be straight on my long term shortlist if you're looking for relatives! ;)

For the right, Conti arrived on loan from AC Milan, but he starts off injured

This was the case constantly with Conti when he was with me at Milan. He's a rock-solid right back, but he's made of cardboard!

  14. Great to see so many new updates in the thread, it's been fairly quiet of late!

5-3-2 I think its very doable right not in Italy, having 3 cb certainly gives a defensive mindset to the team, and you can also use your wb for that... If you are feeling more brave I guess you could try a 4-3-3 also.. either with wings/inside fwd or a couple of amc behind the lone goalscorer.

I would be conscious that Italy has quite a lot of teams that play 5 man defences - the key is to look at ways you can stretch these teams, or get players into space. I'm having joy with a 4-3-2-1 Christmas Tree with very attacking wing-backs, though still sometimes have problems against the likes of Lazio with their horrible 5-4-1.

    Finished my 2nd season

Very good season 5th in the league, runners up in the italian cup again, quarter final of the europa league

Kehrer and Yazici both very good signings

Another great season for you - top 4 next! Squad looks very small - must be managing their fitness well! :D
I see the GK situation's getting quite interesting with Pegolo retiring and Consigli leaving - are you going to run with Turati or bring in some experience?

In terms of our squad, I'm not expecting to make any additions unless someone becomes available. This is what the first team currently looks like - welcome any thoughts.

He says - I've moved Rugani on to Real Sociedad for £10.75mill. He wanted to leave and I have plenty of centre backs.

Emanuel Vignato comes in from Bologna for £41mill - This is with one eye on Bennacer's situation, he's currently crying because I won't let him join Barcelona. If he moves in the summer, I'll likely move Castrovilli back into the midfield. Vignato would then serve as his replacement.

  16. Made it to 1st January, Season 3. We currently sit 2nd in the Serie A - level on points with league leaders Inter, but with a game in hand.

    Screenshot 2021-01-29 at 22.45.09.png

We finished 2nd in our Champions League group, with the 2nd string fumbling a loss against PSV to allow Man City to top the group. We now face Carlo Ancelotti's Barcelona in the First Knockout Round; as we did at the same stage last season. I'm expecting another tough match, with them adding Kulusevski and Bernat to their squad in the summer.

We play Udinese in the first round of the Italian Cup this month, followed by Juventus in the Italian Super Cup.

This season has been a bit disjointed as we had the World Cup in November. Italy winning every knock-out game on penalties to win the thing! Mancini left following the win, and while I applied for the job, Gasperini got it in the end. Atalanta are now running with a Caretaker Manager until the end of the season - interesting to see who comes in as they still have a great squad.

  17. A fairly decent run sees us top of the Serie A after 10 games - drawing only to 5th place Bologna and 3rd place Atalanta. We comfortably disposed of last season's challengers Lazio.

CL has gone reasonably well for us up to now - the loss to Man City was particularly difficult to swallow as Kessie was red carded 6 minutes in and Milenkovic scored an own goal. Even with 10 men, we outperformed them on xG.

I've finally been able to get shot of Jorginho, I persuaded Lampard to cancel the contract.

Struggling to get goals out of Colombo. He was last season's 2nd top scorer for Monza but bar the PSV game he's largely been a non-entity. Belotti's still firing though.

Papu Gomez is proving to be an absolute animal even at 34. 5 goals from a squad rotation role.
