  1. The more I play the more this ME feels like the mess that FM20's was...

So many goals are from set pieces. Corners are OP. Direct free kicks are OP. Loads of highlights that start with a throw in near the byline end up with a quick cross and a goal.

FM20 at times felt like the match engine had no real clue how to generate goals from open play moves and instead resorted to set pieces. And this is so much more of the same.

Near post corners have been broken for years, and still nothing has been done to fix them. Someone on YouTube got Donarumma to score 44 goals in a season using them!

And yet it's still better than FM20 which didn't even resemble football.

True - the FM20 ME was probably the worst ever for me for an FM game. At times it was like the game didn't know how to create goals from open play; so many goals came from throw ins, corners, indirect free kicks. And it was a huge let down that SI just left it as it was and moved onto FM21. I get that they can't fix everything, but that ME was left in a broken state IMO.

FM21, however, for me was one of the best ME's yet. It wasn't perfect, and pressing was overpowered, but at least it was capable of creating different types of goals. I never felt like I was watching the same goal over and over again like in some older FM's.

FM22 is a regression. It's not as bad as FM20, not anywhere close, but it's definitely a step backwards.

  3. Thanks for the reply

I've just finished a season so it will be a while before any of these milestones happen again - the nonsensical press conferences are around the playoff tournaments at the end of the Apertura and Clausuras - and obviously the awards are end of season related.

The Legends/Icons thing I've never had any issues with in other leagues, but I haven't played another league on FM21 so maybe it's just this game. In any case, it did work for the second division and only broke since then.

If I get to these points again I'll upload a save

  4. I'm managing in Colombia, and I've noticed a number of issues with the way the game treats the Apertura and Clausura. This is my first time managing in a league like this, and it's been disappointing to see that the game struggles to work properly with leagues like this. I've already posted most of these issues in the League Specific forum, but I think some of them may be down to the way FM works, not the editor data itself.

    1) Players don't get anything on their bios about winning a medal if I win the Colombian Apertura or Clausura. The club counts as having won them, I count as having won them, but the players - nothing at all.

    2) The club legends/icons page does not update each season. I have two players listed as Icons after my initial season in division 2, but since I've been promoted not a single player has gone into these lists, despite multiple fantastic seasons and league player of the year awards. It's almost like the game doesn't think any seasons have been played that count towards these lists. I've had a player win league player of the year 3 times in a row, fans player of the year 3 years in a row, with ratings higher than 7 each season. He isn't listed in the club favourites at all.

    3) The media don't seem to understand the league system at all. I'm constantly being asked about how great it is to go top of the league and that I can tell my players we can win the title if we win our next game, when in reality all the top 8 teams go into a playoff competition to determine the league winner

    4) The media don't seem to understand that the playoff final is two legs, and congratulate me on winning the league if I win the first leg.

    5) Any records from the Apertura count for the Apertura, but the game acts like my Clausura games also count towards these! So if I win 14 games in the Apertura and the record for wins is 16, once the Clausura starts the game is constantly telling me how close I am to beating my record.

    6) Not sure if this is just an issue with Apertura and Clausura leagues, but players signed after the end of the Clausura, in the end of season transfer window, count as having been signed for the previous season, even though all the games had finished. It makes it impossible to use the transfer history screen reliably, as players will look like they've been bought or sold in different years to when they were actually available.

There are other weird issues, but those are the more annoying ones. It mostly just feels a bit unfinished, and my experience with trying to play in this type of league for a long term save hasn't been great. Hopefully this is just an FM21 issue and won't be exactly the same next year.

  5. The most wins/draws/losses record problem seems to be something like this:

The game treats the apertura and clausera's as separate competitions for these records, i.e. if I win 14 games in the apertura, that is the record that the game remembers.

However, during the season, the game seems to treat the combined table as the one that counts. So if I win 13 games in the apertura, the game then thinks I can beat the record once the clausera starts, and keeps reminding me how close I am to the record until my combined apertura and clausera wins overtake it.

However, this combined total doesn't actually count for the record, it's just that the game thinks it does. So every year I get told I can beat my old record!

This is probably something more wrong with FM itself than the Colombian league data though.

    Hi!

For all you received a proper answer from Makul but about this, i think you need first answer in the forums before you start writing bad things about a research team works.

The majority of the problems are because the game can´t "undestartand" the rules or can´t implemented with the actual decode tools.

I agree - I've removed this part of the comment as it was borne from frustration at that moment

Makul - apoligies for my mini-rant - and thanks for the thorough response - it's good to know that most of my issues (including the most important ones) are being looked into and being fixed. The issues I'm having with the in-season top scorers / most draws etc I'll try and figure out what exactly the game is basing them on. For example I keep getting told I'm close to beating the record for draws / wins / losses in the season, but the numbers are a bit weird. If I figure anything more specific out I'll post here, but my main concerns really are the transfer windows, the scheduling, and the lack of player medals for winning the league.

  7. I'm having more issues with the Colombian leagues:

    1) The game doesn't seem to treat the top division as a title - i.e. if you check my players' bios they are not listed as having won the Clausera even though we won it last year. Checking other teams' players' bios shows the same thing - the Apertura and Clausera don't appear in their competition achievements

    2) The scheduling is completely broken for the Apertura - most teams play their 20th (final) game at the same time, but there are a handful of teams still on 19 games, with the final game scheduled a month later. This means that there's a random break of a month, then they play their final games, after which the playoff leagues are scheduled but with little time left, meaning everyone plays 6 games in 2 weeks!

    3) The split between the Apertura and Clausera is just treated... weirdly. The player awards are linked to the Clausera (I think), meaning that there's random talk of top scorers in the league but it seems to ignore entirely the Apertura. Basically the player awards are pointless.

    4) Whilst in the Apertura the game shows me my highest-rated player on the home screen (with top scorer, most cards etc) - when I reach the Clausera there is no highest-rated player, but the rest still appear

    5) Transfer windows - this isn't just a problem with Colombia, and it needs fixing across the leagues - if I sign a player after the season, in the end of season transfer window - why doesn't the game show this transfer as part of next season's transfers?

For example, I sign a player for $300,000 after the season has ended, on 27th December. The game then lists this with all my signings for that season just ended, as if it was a part of that season... If I sign another player on 5th January he's put into a different season on the transfer history page... This makes no sense, and makes it difficult to see my yearly transfers in any useful way on the screens.

    6) The grand final of the leagues, the media don't seem to realise it's a two-leg game! I narrowly won the first leg of the final, and was told by the press that I must be delighted to win the competition! I had to double check, and sure enough there was still a leg to play.

    7) I'm sure there are also weird interactions related to the fact that the league table isn't that important - as long as you're in the top 8 you get to the playoffs, it doesn't matter about finishing first or eight. Yet the media act like first place is a trophy in itself in the press conferences.

  8. Something that has been driving me insane is the number of goals I'm conceding from opposition goal kicks!

I'm more scared if their GK has the ball than in any other part of the pitch. One kick down the pitch and their striker is in on goal.

This happens from kicks from their hands as well as goal kicks

I play a high (not very high) defensive line, and I've had to move a player into a covering role to try and stop it, which kind of works, but these are still happening. I think over the last season around a dozen goals have been scored against me with the goalkeeper claiming the assist. It's far from realistic when my defenders cannot defend a goal kick...

  9. The game is definitely too easy with any kind of pressing tactic, and too hard if you try and win without a pressing tactic.

With the lowest budget in Colombia I'm top of the top division after two seasons (promoted in the first). I'm barely being attacked by teams who are paying players literally 10x as much as my best players.

And I am not a genius FM player, and I'm not using a downloaded tactic or using lists of wonderkids. I'm mostly signing free agents.

  10. I have the same issue as earlier posters in the top division in Colombia

The Apertura stage, some teams play only 19 of their 20 fixtures and the final one is scheduled a month later, leaving every other team with nothing to do for an entire month.

Since the knockout stages only happen once this fixture is played every team then needs to cram in 6 games in two weeks, meaning the knockout fixtures take place every 2 days...

It's disappointing to see people say this was an issue last year and wasn't fixed. And there will be no way of this being fixed in my save either. So it makes the Colombian leages a joke, because every year the first knockout stage will be a complete farce with every team getting injuries and tiredness to extremes.

Stars are completely removed. In some instances I’ve replaced them with text. Like reputation stars, so for clubs, rather than stars, it’ll say, regional, national, continental etc.

Coach and scout reports give all the information I need, with the text descriptions of a player. But unlike stars, that I agree are also, or can be, vague, I find the descriptions to be vaguer still. Which is more realistic. For me.

I found myself making all and every decision based on stars. Only signing kids that had 4 stars with a blacked out 5th, redoing my tactic based purely on the star ratings of my players in any given position. It became all about the stars. Removing them has totally freed all of that up.

The numbered attributes have just been changed into icons (I use squares but others use stars). I have tweaked the thresholds for colours to give a broader spectrum. So excellent stats are 15 and up. Good stats are 10-14 etc. Means I’m never quite sure of how good anybody is.

I have to watch them, look at other stats I wouldn’t normally look at, trust my coaches and scouts. It’s hugely immersive. For me.

And not truly knowing a players exact condition just adds to the overall feel I’m going for. Vagueness.

This is a fantastic idea - it's probably more extreme than I'd like, but it's definitely going in what (for me) is the better way for the game to go.

The CA/PA star ratings make a complete mockery of the rest of the game in my opinion. Why bother reading the scout reports, or looking at individual attributes to any degree. Especially for younger players - look at the PA and make a decision based on those stars alone!

In older games I'd have persisted with average players because they played well, but now your mind is made up the second you see the potential of a player. People will claim it's not accurate, but it's close enough. And it leads to lazy playing - ignore anyone with low PAs, sign all the best wonderkids (who will be overwhelmingly likely to reach their potential), and dominate long term. And even if you have a youngster who puts in good performances for the youth teams, if they have a low PA you'll sell them 99.99% of the time regardless.

In my ideal version of the game the complexity would still be there, just hidden a bit more from the player. And things like the fitness icons are a good step towards that I think.

Player ratings have really gone to dust. While the new hotfix 'seems' to have fixed the player ratings, its far from it.

Looks like the ratings problem has simply been transferred from the defensive players to the offensive players. These were the ratings i got in a 0-1 loss to leicester.

Prior to any of the patches, i lost 0-3 to leicester and ratings are about the same as a 0-1 loss in the new patch.

I dream of the day I can get such ratings in a 1-0 victory once again

Really what this highlights is just how pointless player ratings have been for years in FM. Win or lose, your players are all rated fairly similarly. It tells you practically nothing useful.

I'd love SI to implement a proper rating system that can actually rate players on a scale from 1-10, not from 6-7.

  14. Colombian Second Division - the first half of the season has finished and I'm in the second half (Torneo II) - which is its own separate league. The game is still using the positions from the first half (Torneo I) for the match previews in the header bar at the top of the screen.

So the game says 8th vs 1st, based on Torneo I finishes, but in Torneo II those teams are in completely different positions in the league.

Is it will be easy or hard?
In my opinion FM has a normal difficult. I don't agree with those who says that the game is easy

This year the game is too easy.

I'm managing a team with the lowest budget in the league, and we've just won the first half of the season (Apertura). The second half has started and we've won 4-1, 4-1, and 5-0 - against some of the best teams in the league.

A friend is winning every game of his using a stupid formation. I see other people earning 3 promotions in 3 years. It's only when you're massively outclassed that your team really struggles, every other game, even if I don't win I feel like we could easily have won on another day.

Right now it's so easy that it's becoming a bit boring. I want to feel like I've earned promotion, not cruise to it in the first season despite selling my best player and spending £0 on new signings.

what is next ? attribute  gonne be in colour too not number ?

am really gutted and hate it !!

Honestly this is something I think might be a benefit to the game too (I'm not 100% on this though!)

Do we really need to know if a player is 17 or 18 or 19 in shooting? Would a move to a grading system, or hiding the attributes behind more general tiers like they've done with match fitness, be that detrimental?

Less information could (counterintuitively) change the way the game works, for the better. Removal of the star ranking system for players and hiding the exact attributes would mean players have to look more at how their team actually plays game to game to see who performs better, who looks to be improving etc etc. An overhaul of the match rating system too is something I'd love to see - ditching the decimal points and moving from a 1-10 scale instead of a 6.4-6.7 scale we currently have (seriously how often do players actually get below a 6.4, it's so rare yet that's half of the scale never used!

    Just my thoughts on it.

You can adjust column width within the game.

Column widths are broken and have been for years, I spent far too long trying to get the columns correct on the squad screen, only for the pre-match squad screen (which is slightly smaller) to **** them all up again and no matter what I tried I couldn't get them working. So the condition and heart columns are miles wide. Auto size columns breaks things even more.

On the topic itself, I'm a big fan of the change to match condition in particular. Simpler doesn't always mean better, but in this case I think it does. We don't need to know if a player is 91% vs 94% fit really, do we? This change makes the same information easier to see, and is also more realistic.

I also wonder if certain tactics are successful because they are considered 'popular' or the best in tactical evolution and the game reflects it?  A theme in this thread is that most are using a Gegenpress variation on how Liverpool play and it 'works' and is flavour of the month until the next tactical evolution. I imagine 1930's FM would have a load complaining about the effectiveness of the W-M....

Regarding the overpowered Gegenpress - there will always be tactics that are more popular than others. The issue isn't even that the Gegenpress is more powerful than other formations - it's that it's more powerful seemingly regardless of what team you're using. Everyone from the amateur leagues to Real Madrid can use it seemingly with no real downsides. In real life Accrington Stanley don't Gegenpress their way to promotion every season!

On FM19 I had a save with Fulham. Since they were completely outclassed in the Premier League I decided to try a defensive counter attack formation and set us up accordingly. We didn't get a win in 10, I was lucky not to get sacked, and we were adrift at the bottom of the table. In desperation I opted for a pressing formation (not knowing at that point just how overpowered the tactic was, I just needed to try something different). We immediately went on an amazing run, and ended up comfortably in mid-table. With a team that really should have been relegated or close to being relegated.

It's overpowered to the extent that other tactics don't even come close.

SI need to look at why every team in world football doesn't press all game, and find a way to implement it in FM. In reality using it should leave chasms of space unless your players know what they're doing, and should tire everyone out rapidly. None of these things really happen in FM - and if they do they're more than made up for by the goals you score at the other end.

    - are you playing in the spirit of football management or are your actions creating unrealistic advantages

    - has your accumulated knowledge or the knowledge of others in the community turned you into an advanced user? The game cannot keep pace with you and remain accessible to the wide audience.  The game hasn't changed that much and the 'experts' you are learning from are using knowledge from hundreds of others built up over decades.

    - are you still having fun?  What would make it fun?

    - what one thing could S.I do to improve.  Use the features and bugs forums to highlight.

    As for these:

    1) I would say I am playing in the spirit of the game, though I have used triallists quite a lot. That said, lower league teams do use triallists a fair amount. Like above, I think SI need to look at why teams don't just use loads of triallists in place of scouting and put barriers up in the game to this.

    2) I've played since the CM 00/01 days, but I definitely wouldn't consider myself a tactical genius. I rarely (if ever) win any trophies in my saves, I'm happy to get a promotion here and there and stabilise the team as best I can, winning the CL with every team isn't really my goal.

    3) I am having more fun on FM21 than FM20, purely because the match engine is miles better. It's not perfect, but at least 80% of the goals aren't from set pieces anymore. I also don't mind the UI changes. There are improvements needed, but it's a positive step for me. That said, the lack of any real challenge is worrying. I want promotion to be a momentus occasion, not the formality it currently is.

    4) For me it's loads of little things rather than one or two huge things. But player ratings are something that need an overhaul. The entire spectrum of 0-10.0 is barely ever seen, with all your players sitting between 6.5-6.7 unless they score or assist. It tells you nothing about the game unless a goal is scored.

  19. After a brief dip in form using tika-taka after the patch (not creating enough chances due to the full backs smashing every cross into the first defender) I moved to a more gegenpress style, but without wingers in an attempt to make it more challenging. So I'm using a 4-3-2-1.

And we've immediately started destroying the opposition. Lost one game as I went down to 10 men early on, the rest I'm undefeated. And this is in the playoff group, so it's against the best teams in my league. I hammered the top team 4-1, and I'm basically now promoted to the top division in my first season. Of what was supposed to be a long term challenge. And this is using a team whose budget is the lowest in the league.

The game is definitely too easy.

My conspiracy theory is that SI want to make the game easy so that more people post on Twitter etc about taking amateur clubs to the Champions League trophy and advertise their game. Hopefully it's not that reason and SI can actually improve this, because winning a game that seems to want you to win isn't very fulfilling. I have had more fun languishing around in mid table season after season in a challenging game.

  20. Currently sat comfortably in third in the Colombian second division using a team predicted to finish mid table. Most games my goal isn't even threatened - I feel I'm winning games without really having to do much myself.

I chose this league and team for a long-term challenge, but right now I'm on for promotion in the very first season without spending a penny, selling my best player, and trying out a new formation I made myself (based on tika-taka but edited a fair bit and positions moved around etc).

I lost one in the league unluckily, the rest of the games have been absurdly comfortable. Even if I lose in the cup to higher division teams (which are still really close games) or draw a league game I'm not remotely worried by whoever I play next, as my team controls the games throughout.

I'm not sure what the issue is really. Are the AI not intelligent enough, or not attacking enough? Or were their signings that much worse than the free transfers I brought in using my limited scouting resources?

  21. After some time with the game, I want to say that I am a fan of the change from a % figure for fitness to the heart system.

Yes, it's slightly less accurate, but did we really need to know the exact % of a player's fitness - especially since 0-50% was basically never seen except for injuries.

I feel that with the heart system is making me pay more attention to the fitness of players. You can see very quickly who is tired and who isn't, and it honestly feels a bit more realistic to just have a more general view on their fatigue.

I can't say I agree with all the UI changes - the timeline is a big miss, assists seem hidden now, there's wasted space either side of the pitch on 2D, and the text commentry covers the pitch way too much. But I do in general like the move to something a little more simple.

Player ratings are something similar I'd love to see have an overhaul at some point in the future. We have an entire spectrum of 0-10.0 yet every player 90% of the time is rated 6.5-6.7, unless they score or assist. The whole system is meaningless. Even a move back to removing the decimal points would be good IMO, for all the use the .1s have for players.
