I'm baffled, every time I've attempted a similar set up its 0-0s all over the place, but fair enough:lol:

Sounds like you're getting fairly decent results so maybe best not to toy with it too much I guess

Here's the results for the season.

But that's not the case. I follow the games closely and see things that doesn't work well and I want to improve the tactic all the time.

And in this case I'm unsure about my central midfielders and how I should set up their roles.

You lack some central penetration, a CM(A) or Mez(A) would be good in there.

Aside from that, your TIs just look very toothless to me. Much shorter passing, work ball into box, lower tempo, be more disciplined.. it seems to me that you're just keeping possession for the sake of it and you'll struggle badly to score goals because you have no bite in there.  No verticality in your passing, no creative freedom, I see a lot of 0-0s in that tactic

Maybe a CM (a) could fit and I could try that with the CM-R.

    Well, last 5 games went 3-2, 1-1, 5-3, 3-1, 4-1.

  3. Hi guys,

I need help with the three central midfielders and what kind of roles they should play, to suit the tactic in general and the other roles.

    - It would be great if my CM-R (Behrens) could cover up for my right wingback. Would a Carrilero (su) or Central Midfielder (d) be a better option?
    - Should my DLP be set on defend or support? He's better suited for the support role skillswise.

Any help or tactical advises in general would be much appreciated.

That's why I prefer to leave the team pressing urgency on default and then only apply a split block via player instructions.

Higher def. line and standard LOE is split block right?

It really depends on the overall quality of your team as a whole and its strengths and weaknesses. The stronger/better your players are, the more risk you can afford to take (and vice versa). But it does not mean that you can/should completely ignore the need for tactical balance, even if you manage the best team in the world.

Thanks but do you have some suggestions on specific roles that could suit, other than Carrilero? Central Midfielder (support) or would that leave to much of a gap, as the WB-R is set on attack?

Your midfield trio looks a bit too conservative overall. That may not be too much of an issue if your left back was a bit more attack minded (WB on support instead of FB on support), so that he would provide more width in the final third and serve as a wide passing option when the IF moves inside. Another option is to keep the LB as FB on support, but change the BBM into CM on attack duty and AML into the standard winger on support. See which of these options better suits your players.

But the bigger problem are your instructions. In-possession ones are needlessly too rushed (extremely high tempo coupled with a high team mentality is the most problematic one), whereas the out-of-possession TIs are overly aggressive, which not only increases defensive vulnerability but also deprives your players of space up front. Tight marking in particular makes no sense in a tactic like yours (including the formation as well).

The right side is good. Carrilero (or BWM on support) makes a lot more sense in MCR than BBM, considering the roles of your RB and AMR.

If you use the offside trap - as you obviously do - then both CBs should be on the same duty (defend). If you want one CB on cover, then remove the offside trap. Simple.

    Really thanks for the input.

I've adjusted the roles and tactics as you suggested to try it out.
I'm not sure though what you mean with: "...whereas the out-of-possession TIs are overly aggressive, which not only increases defensive vulnerability but also deprives your players of space up front".
I'm guessing it's about the pressing intensity. That my few players up front won't be able to get an effective press and get out of position?

Interesting about the tight marking, why does it not suit my playing style/tactic?

If I would like to keep the role Box to Box midfielder for the next season. What are the options on the MCR-postion other then Carrilero? If I want to be less conservative on the central midfield but still solid.

I attached a new photo of the tactics after the editing.

  6. Hi,

I would very much like your input on my 4-1-2-3 playing with Nürnberg in the Bundesliga. A picture on my tactics and set up is attached.

A couple of thoughts and questions from my own.

    • What are the optimal roles at central midfield for this set up? As it is right now, I've put the Carrilero on the MCR spot to cover up for my attacking WB (or am I thinking wrong here, that the box-to-box-midfielder should be on the right side?
    • I feel though that the Carrilero role is a bit to stationary, as it won't dribble or move the ball forward. For the next season I'm looking to change this if possible, with a more dynamic role for the MCR. Thoughts anyone?
    • Should my Ball playing defender (DCR) be on cover instead of defence? due to the attacking minded wingback on the right side?
    • Any other thoughts on my set up when it comes to In possession, In transistion and out of possesion?

    Best regards,
    Walton

  7. Really, thanks guys.

I've been analyzing my squad and possible tactics recent days.
And I think I've been spending money, time and scouting on the wrong players - to be able to play the way I want.

Everything is built pretty wrong from the start and I think I had enough with this team (Stuttgart) after four seasons (actually winning Bundesliga 2 x1, Bundesliga x1, DFB x1 and Europa League x1).

Either way I've learnt many things from your posts and will be more cautious with signings and even more with roles suited for the system.

I have started a new game - and by doing things with more consideration from the start, I will probably be back with questions in a new thread :)

    Thanks again.

    A few thoughts:

    • You have all attack duties up front, all trying to play in the centre - not sure where the width is really coming from, or the variation in attack.
    • I'd say 2 x AP(s) and a BWM(d) is a very aggressive midfield which won't offer as much protection.
    • I'm not clear why you are trying to distribute quickly and play with a higher tempo, yet at the same time underlapping and work the ball into the box. It looks like there is a confusion of styles - are you trying to play quickly and exposing space, or trying to play possession football?

    Thanks for your input.

    • Do you believe that it's to heavy with the attacking up front? What do you mean with "not sure where the width is really coming from"?
    • Would it be better with 1 AP(s), 1 DLP(s) and 1 BWM(d) in the center?
    • Distribute quickly is just because i feel there are openings in the field that you could take advantage of, before the opponent covers up with their formation. Wether or not you're looking to counter or set up plays.
    • Higher tempo is something I feel that suits my technical players. And that they are capable of playing it. And if i play at a normal/slow pace I tend to loose the ball by being pressed.
    • I'm not looking for a pure high possession football nor direct play. Probably something in between or a mix of it.

edit; and the underlap is for the inside forward and the inverted winger.

  9. Three seasons in I'm stuck and need to see over my tactics and strategies.

I'v been playing a 4-4-2 but most teams/the computer have exposed my tactics and I need to renew.
So far I have decided to go with following tactic (see pictures). And my questions is , is there something that doesn't match up well and what would you suggest, using this formation/tactic.

    - One thing I'm tinking about is setting one of the AP's to attack. And bot of them to "roam from position".

All help I could get is much appreciated.

    Thanks, Walton.
