  1. It really shouldn't be this complicated! I have watched many videos where people say "I want to Work Ball into Box and have my players Run at the defence" so they select it.

As for the roles, it is ridiculous to suggest an attacking midfielder linking the Midfield to the Striker cant play with a box to box midfielder. Starting positions suggest a Box to Box starts inside his own half. The "Space" her runs into can surely be made vacant by an attacking midfield if need be, its called positional play. "If I am making this un, you drop in behind me to cover the space".

As for an inverted winger, we starts as a winger and cuts inside onto the opposite foot as the side he is playing, usually his preferred foot the (the definition of inverted). I fail to see how much more basic this could be so regardless of whether I am playing a wing back or not, its all about starting positions and tactical instructions determine the passage of play. The wing back starts higher up...simple.

Finally, Working the ball into the box is simply telling your players to play it around and look for an opening. I am playing a positive mentality which does not mean Gegenpress or Gung Ho. This should be more than suitable instructions couple with "pass shorter" if I want ball retention.

All the answers on here have only left me more confused to be honest and frankly seem so so over complicated.

I did not mention the BBM in the context of the BWM but in relation to the wide partnership on the left flank as well as the AP on support in front of him

So would a B2B Alongside a BWM (D) in the pivot with an AP on Attack in front of them work? Or best to avoid a B2B in this formation all together?

On 04/03/2021 at 00:05, Experienced Defender said:

I did not say that it must necessarily be a holding role. I said that it should not be a (typical) runner role (such as BBM or CM on support/attack). But there are also covering midfield roles (carrilero and BWM on support).

However, in this particular case - and taking your specific players into account - I would prefer the combo of DLP on support in MCL and either BWM or CM on defend in MCR. Provided you switch the AP to either an AM or TQ (who is a playmaker role though, but of a different kind and can actually work fine in the style of play you want to implement).

So really, what you are saying, is to use a DLP(S) + BWM(D) or DLP(S) + CM (D) combination for the pivot with an AM(S) in front of them?

On 04/03/2021 at 00:05, Experienced Defender said:

But why would you want 2 playmakers - especially of the same type and in such a close vicinity - when you said you want to play a "quick" attacking style? That makes no sense to me.

Quick, passing style is what I want to achieve. Retention is equally as important.

One of the midfield two pairing needs to be capable of bringing the ball forwards (carrying) whilst the other is to stay further back to cut passing lanes and retain the ball. Watching Chelsea against Liverpool last night, they had Jorginho on the right of the 2 CM's as a DLP(D) and he sat deep retaining the ball. Kante was on the left of the 2 CM's pushing ahead as a BWM(S).

In games before this, they have had Jorginho on the right of the 2 CM's as a DLP(D) again sitting deep and retaining the ball. Kovacic has been on the left of the 2 CM's collecting the ball from deep and driving forward, like a B2B but could also be a DLP(S). This is where the theory of 2 Deep Playmakers came from.

On 04/03/2021 at 00:05, Experienced Defender said:

Keep in mind that you play on a higher tempo under a high-risk team mentality (positive) + the counter instruction in transition. Plus overly aggressive defensive instructions on top of that.

This is why I selected "Work Ball into Box". If I drop to Lower Tempo, the build up play is too slow and doesn't use the pace of the attackers very well. In addition, pressing with a High Line is best for the attackers I have as they have already shown that they can force mistakes from teams playing out from the back.

  3. 15 minutes ago, Experienced Defender said:

If you go with the DLP, that can slow down your attacking play more than you would like given the presence of another supporting playmaker (APsu) in front of him, which is obviously inconsistent with what you described as your preferred style of play:

You advised not to use a B2B midfielder next to the BWM as it is a roaming role. So I assume the only specialist  'holding role' really is the DLP and being as the BWM is defend duty, I should use support for the playmaker.

With this in mind, I should try to get the best out of Havertz as an AMC on support (or should I use attack duty?)

20 minutes ago, Experienced Defender said:

You mean 2 DLPs next to each other (MCL & MCR) - one on defend and the other on support? Or I misunderstood something?

That's right. If I use the the centre midfield (pivot) roles as DLPs (MCL) and BWMd (MCR), I am thinking which defensive roles could also be used in that MCR position. This is for when I need to sub out or rest Kante (see my tactics screenshot)

25 minutes ago, Experienced Defender said:

As with the Pass into space, both the WBiB and BME are essentially better used as a situational than regular instructions. On top of that, the Work ball into box is also an instruction that slows play down, which is opposite to what you want

I understand, however I keep seeing my players take so many impossible shots outside the area. Assistant advises to "Instruct players to work ball into box" regularly.

Also, I know I want to play quick football but that doesn't mean always too direct. Passing the ball shortly and quickly to retain then boom...through ball or similar

  4. 2 hours ago, Experienced Defender said:

In terms of roles and duties, the only role I would change in this setup is the BBM. Because you have an AP on support duty in AMC, whose space and area of influence could be reduced by a typical midfield runner such as the BBM behind him, especially when the wide forward on that side (AML/IW) is inside-oriented. Plus, with the BBM in MCL, defensive risk on the left flank is higher than it would be necessary, given the partnership of an attacking IW and attack-minded fullback role.

So as mentioned in Question 2 above, should I select a DLP-S to go with the BWM-D in the pivot? If so, am I ok to sub the BWM-D (Kante) out for A DLP-D (Jorginho) or will those  2 Deep Lying Playmakers conflict?

2 hours ago, Experienced Defender said:

Basically, insisting on passes into space when you are a top team playing (mostly) against defensive opposition usually means giving possession away cheaply and needlessly.

I agree with your points here so will remove the Pass Into Space instruction.

I will also add  Work Ball Into Box  as my players tend to take ridiculous shots if that instruction isn't applied.

I may also remove Be More Expressive to keep things more controlled, what do you think?

If so, My instructions will look as below

    Formation: 4-2-3-1

    Mentality: Positive

In Possession: Shorter Passing, Play Out of Defence, Run At Defence, Work Ball Into Box, Higher Tempo

In Transition: Distribute to CB, Distribute Quickly, Counter, Counter Press

Out of Possession: Higher Line of Defence, Much Higher Line of Engagement, Extremely Urgent, Prevent Short GK Distribution

  5. I wondered if I could have some feedback on a few tactical ideas I have in mind for my Chelsea save.

I know any tactic I create will need a little bit of tweaking during pre-season, but I want to create a 'Primary' tactic as a starting blue print.

The Idea is I want to play a quick, short passing game with through balls to my quick forwards (Werner, Pulisic, CHO) when they are on. When possession is lost, I want my team to win the ball back quickly in order to exploit any space left on a counter. The Attackers to be quick and direct, the midfield to be aggressive and to retain the ball and the defence to play from the back with full backs creating width in attacks.

So my original instructions are as follows:

    Formation: 4-2-3-1

    Mentality: Positive

In Possession: Shorter Passing, Pass Into Space, Play Out of Defence, Run At Defence, Be More Expressive, Higher Tempo

In Transition: Distribute to CB, Distribute Quickly, Counter, Counter Press

Out of Possession: Higher Line of Defence, Much Higher Line of Engagement, Extremely Urgent, Prevent Short GK Distribution

Below is a screenshot of my original tactic. Before I start going through pre-season, I wondered if anyone had any feedback on the following:

    1. Do the roles throughout the team seem balanced enough?

    2. Do the Center Midfield roles seem ok or should I have Kovacic as a DLP (S)?

    3. I have Mount to backup Kovacic/Havertz in the Support role and Jorginho to backup Kante in the defensive role. If the LCM position is changed to a DLP, should I sell Jorginho (DLP (D) and buy a backup BWM (D) for Kante

    4. Would Havertz be better here as an Advanced Playmaker or Attacking Midfielder? Also, is Attack or Support duty better here (bearing in mind the 2 roles behind him in the pivot)

Any answers to the above, or general feedback/tweaks, would be greatly appreciated.

Check what games are played on november 30th. Check champions league and uefa cup. If you always hace crash at same date - its something related to that.

The 30th November 2019 is a Saturday so there are lots of games played on this day.

English Leagues, FA Cup etc. No European fixtures.

If this is fixture related, then there are 2 things that are confusing me with this...

    1. Why does the game wait until November 30th to crash? There are a lot of games played already by this date.

    2. If this was to do with fixture generating, again why is it not crashing until the 30th November when most competitions are up and running.

    - Player and staff transfers

    - Some player editing

    - Staff movements

    In addition, regarding club/league changes,

    - Moved clubs around in the English leagues to reflect the promotion/relegations of last season

    - Changed history (1st/2nd/3rd place + playoff winners) for English league

    - Changed last position finish for all English clubs

    - Changed Champions League & UEFA Cup registered teams based on respective league finishes

(European competitions was more of a swap thing, same number of participants from each nation)

Can you post the whole tactic (screenshot)? I want to see your team instructions and then I can tell you what tweaks you can try to improve it.

Keep also in mind that we are not talking about a plug'n'play tactic here, but rather discussing how a balanced and sensible tactic for a team like Chelsea could look like. Therefore, it's work in progress, not a ready-made tactic.

I think I am nearly there with the Formation in terms of playing style. It may  not be what was suggested, but seems to be working and getting good results 4 games in although no elite teams played yet.

Below is the Team instructions, Formation (with Roles) and players I have used in those positions so far.

On the wide men....I did ideally want Pulisic as an IF(A) ideally (so Werner can back him up) but neither seem to play that IF (A) role very well,.. unless its to do with the striker? IW (A) is suiting him so far, hence the line-up below. However, I wonder if I am playing the correct full back roles  to partner with the wingers. Thoughts?

I am also in 2 minds about the RCM. Box to Box works well (ish) so far but I did wonder about BWM.  The only thing is I wanted to introduce Conor Gallagher into that BBM role when Kante is phased out and dont see him as suitable for BWM. Trying to think long term on this one with youth in mind.

If you want the mezzala on the left, here is what you need to do:

    PFat

    IFsu                                   IWsu

    MEZat   BWMsu

    DLPde

    WBsu   CDde  BPDde  FBat

    SKsu

Just swap the sides of the CM and FB roles and that's it.

Both options can work. You can have a DM on defend duty and DLP on support instead of the BWM next to the mezzala. Like this:

    DLPsu    MEZat

    DMde

Not necessarily. Can be done, but would require a couple of tweaks elsewhere (including the striker's role).

P.S: Don't be obsessed with having many attack duties, because that's not what makes your tactic more dangerous and potent in attack. Variety of attacking patterns coupled with creation of space through role interaction is far more important and effective.

I assumed all your potential BPDs are right-footed, that's the main reason in this particular case.

So I tried this recommendation...it is aweful!

I ran through pre-season to learn tactic and gel as a team, plus 2 games into the season against Burnley (0-0 draw at home) and Southampton (1-1 draw away).

Left winger (Pulisic / Werner / CHO) all have very low ratings, 6.4 or 6.5 mainly.

Havertz does NOTHING. His ratings are around 6.5 also as the suggested Mezzala (tried on both right and left)

The strikers used so far (Werner / Abraham) are terrible, only 3 goals between then in all games and 4 games in pre-season were against low rep opposition).

    erm........

  14. 2 hours ago, Experienced Defender said:

DLPde - Jorginho / Kovacic (possibly Kessie as well, although I can't remember all his attributes)

BWMsu - Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Kessie

    MEZat - Mount / Havertz / Kovacic

So you have plenty of room to rotate these guys.

Don't worry about the green circle. Look at player attributes instead, because attributes matter the most when it comes to role suitability.

And don't care too much about their preferred side. It has a minimum effect (if any).

I am guessing this setup needs a support role behind that inside forward so Kante/Kessie definitely on the left instead of the Mezzala on the left.

Would you have the DLP(d) in the DM position or have Kante there as a DM(d) and have a DLP(s) next to the Mezzalla?

If the latter, would it be better then to have the AML Inside forward on attack?

Finally, any reason you swapped the centre back pairing?

  15. 2 hours ago, raktim0699 said:

Here is a snapshot of an ideal line up you may use and what sort of roles each could play. The shape is 4-2-3-1, another potential formation very suitable for Chelsea. Here, the concept is similar,.but the emphasis on getting both the full-back very high up the pitch. I would want either one of the pivots to drop between the CB to bring the ball out of defense and tell the CB to stay wide. This will allow ziyech again to fall into the same space i talked about earlier. The whole idea here is overloading the center with creative players. Havertz can almost function as a second forward. You would want pulisic playing on the right-hand side to come narrow as well.

    tactical-board.com (14).png

Looks a good solution at 4-2-3-1 although I dont think Mount is defensively sound enough to form the pivot.

This could be a role for Jorginho/Kovacic though as a DLP on Support. What roles would you assign to the above?

  16. 20 hours ago, Experienced Defender said:

If you are "a bit of a rookie", then better keep your tactical creation as simple as possible, at least until you gain more experience. In that regard, I would advise you to stick to the 4141dm wide formation as inherently more balanced and thus easier to set up compared to the tricky top-heavy 4231.

So let's take a look at your 4141dm wide tactic:

If you want to "control possession with quick passing", then instead of attacking mentality + lower tempo, go with Positive + (slightly) higher tempo & shorter passing (along with Play out of defence and possibly work ball into box).

When it comes to out-of-possession instructions, tight marking makes virtually no sense both in terms of your intended style of play and the formation you are using. Therefore, remove it.

I personally would also remove the extreme pressing, but that's less of a problem than tight marking.

In transition, there is no need to tell the keeper how and whom to distribute the ball to, given that you already have the Play out of defence and short passing turned on. Let the keeper pick the best and safest possible option depending on a given situation.

The Counter team instruction should be used on a situational basis, rather than as a regular part of your tactic, simply because Chelsea is a top team and therefore most opponents will play very defensively against you, which means there is rarely going to be enough space for those potential counter-attacks to be effective. Instead, the counter instruction is more likely to lead to needless losses of possession than successful counter-attacks (most of the time).

If you want to utilize your fullbacks' "attacking qualities", it does not mean that you must play them both on attack duties. WB on support duty is a quite attack-minded role, for example (in some way even more so than FB on attack).

Plus, if you want attack-minded fullback roles, you need to make sure they have proper defensive cover in the midfield. With your CM partnership of an attacking AP and BBM, that defensive cover is almost nonexistent.

On top of that, AP on attack duty is a lot more suited for fast-transition styles (e.g. fast attacking or counter-attacking football) than your control possession.

So to cut the long story short, here is how I would set up your roles and duties taking both your desired style of play into account + your players + my observations above:

    PFat

    IFsu                              IWsu

    BWMsu   MEZat

    DLPde

    FBat   CDde  BPDde   WBsu

    SKsu

If you have any questions, feel free to ask

Thanks for the feedback on this.

Looking at the formation above, I kind of understand where this is going. However, I am looking at that Midfield and I am thinking how to accommodate the players I have.

I bought Franck Kessie as a Kante Backup. The can both play BBM and BWM  (although Kante only shows fully 'green' as BBM) but the like to play on the right of a 2.

As more attacking options, I have Mount who likes to play on the left of a 2 and Havertz who likes to play on the right of a two.

Then, as Deeper playmakers, I have Kovacic who likes to play on the left of a 2 and Jorginho who has no preference in a two.

I guess this was why I was looking at that 4-2-3-1 as I could have had Kovacic/Jorginho as MC Left  (DLP-S) and Kante/Kessie as MC Right (BBM- S) with Havertz/Mount as that AMC position (although not sure on roles).

One of the biggest performance problems I have is that whoever is on the AML (Pulisic/Wener/CHO), they always under perform with no goals or assists and a poor rating...confusing.

This is my problem, it seems almost like there is TOO much variation that the positions end up unbalanced. It gets worse when 'Hot Prospect' players come back from loan.

  17. Please bare with me, I am a bit of a rookie at Football Manager.

I am about to start a new Chelsea save and want to primarily play a "4-1-4-1 Wide" with a "4-2-3-1" alternative formation.

    The style of play and objectives are to;

    - Control the possession with quick passing.

    - Utilise pace and skill of wingers  (Pulisic, Ziyech, Hudson-Odoi) to create/score.

    - Utilise attacking qualities of Full Backs (Chillwell / James) to support attack.

    - Balance the CM with current options available (Kovacic / Kante / Jorginho + Havertz / Mount)

Set out as below, I have struggled to balance the team which is resulting in average/poor performances from the Midfield and/or Wingers. I would really appreciate suggestions or advice based on the below. Any amendments to Tactics/Player Roles? Any Individual Instructions to apply?

Please bare in mind the players I have at my disposal as I cannot put square pegs in round holes.

Thanks guys and sorry for the long post. Any help would be awesome please.

  18. Really appreciate the feedback, thanks for taking the time.

Two last questions if that is ok please?

Firstly, Is there any unwritten rules so to speak about the 'balance' you mention? By that I mean "You need one of this type, one of this type and one of this type in your 3 man midfield". For example, the great Barcelona midfield had Busquets (HB - D) in the DMC Position with Xavi (DLP - S) and Iniesta (AP - A) in the CM Positions. A defensive player, a holding midfielder and a more forward thinking midfielder. I would like to think "I need this type of player in DMC, this type of player in LCM and this type of player in RCM" if that makes sense.

Secondly, do you let Assistant deal with Training & opposition instructions?

I would need to see his profile first, but he is definitely more suited to a mezzala role than BMW.

    See attached for Barkley's profile

As with Barkley, I would need to see Ziyech's player profile first.

You mean when Kante cannot play?

No, I am saying that Kante is nailed on for that RCM spot (as BBM or BWM). But, when he is unavailable, what role can replace that role he occupies without causing an issue.

For instance, If I have a Mez (A) in LCM, what roles can compliment that considering my Centre Midfielders I have available (I have attached screenshots of Kante, Mount, RLC, Kovacic, Van Ginkel & Barkley)

I also uploaded Wingers for role comparison to what we have discussed

That's why my preferred setup would be the one with Kante in DM and Jorginho in MCL. That one is easier to rotate, because Kovacic (or even Jorginho) can replace Kante in DM when necessary, but it's hard to find a proper substitute for Kante in the BWM role.

I completely get that, I really do. However, Jorginho has pretty good defensive stats in terms of Tackling (16) and Positioning (15).  Marking (12) and Strength (11) aren't the best but Kante is Marking (12) and Strength (14) so not a world apart.

Below  is how I see Chelse play, and I would like to try to play similar, but I am not sure how to translate into FM 2020.

DL - Gets forward on an overlap linking with the AML, more attacking and an occasional goal threat (Alonso mainly for goals)

DR - Stays wide and gets forward but deeper than the DL. Mainly crosses from deep and supports

CB - Not significant here as I will tailor them as needed.

DMC - Usually Jorginho sit in from of the back 4 intercepting and dictating the game from deep. Kovacic has deputised here but I would need to sign a playmaker in January I think, this is the main playmaker in the team.

LCM - Gets further forward with Mount pressing high and chipping in with goals or Kovacic collecting deep and carrying the ball forward

RCM - Usually Kante, gets up and down the pitch looking to break up play or intercept passes. When Kante is unavailable Chelsea aren't as defensively strong. I have seen mainly Barkley deputise but as more of a playmaker, something RLC could do but he has been out injured this season.

AML - Usually CHO or Pulisic (Pedro of late) cut inside, get into the box.

AMR - Usually Willian, sometimes CHO or Pulisic, stay wider but still do cut inside. They usually play-make rather that score on that side.

CF - Comes deep to link play. Tammy gets into the box more to score whereas Giroud will provide flick ons and hold up play.

The passing is short but the tempo is high.

The Line of engagement is high with lots of high, intense pressing

There is a mixed focus of play.

Chelsea generally play out from the back with the DMC giving another option

Speaking specifically of these 3/4 players, these are the setups I personally would consider:

    PFat

    IWsu                               Wat

    MEZat     BMWsu

    DLPde

    WBsu   CD  CD/BPD   WBsu

With Jorginho as the DLP in DM and Kante as the BWM.

I think this is close on the Left side to be honest so thank you for that. I could have Mount / RLC rotating in that LCM role long term as they are young enough to lock that position down between them.

RLC Traits are "Runs with ball through Centre" + "Tries to play way out of trouble" so I am guessing this means he would be a ball carrier.

Mount Traits are "Arrives late in opposition area" + "Curls ball" so he would be that goalscorer as opposed to a ball carrier.

I could even play Barkley here as the Mez (A) I am guessing?

Now the Right Side of the team.

Presuming I start with Kante in the BWM (S) role. I have Kovacic, Barkley & RLC (if Mount plays) to rotate in/out of the team so what roles do you think they could cover there (if any)

Barkley is physical has poor defensive & mental stats so he wont really fit in here. RLC is also very physical but again, not the best defensively and more of a playmaker/ball carrier.

The AMR position is good for now, Willan / Pulisic can do this. However, when Ziyech signs (pre-arranged), could I simply slot him in as an IW (S)  / IF (S)  which are his best roles, or will this then conflict?

The whole squad seems very imbalanced to me
