Its not harsh though is it? Work permits and the restriction of foreign nationals coming to the UK to work will be in place across pretty much all professions in the UK. Why should physios, sports scientists etc be exempt just because they work for a football club? This will be the reality of brexit.

I don't know all the ins and outs of visa's and work permits in real life, but there are a lot of major exemptions for sports persons. Combat athletes for example quite easily get WPs to go and fight and train in the States for long periods of time.

If anything the bug there is that either would get a work permit on appeal.  Cannot see why either would.

My guess would be that the Nigerian & Cape Verdian have English as a second nationality?

You are right, one has English and one has Irish as a second nationality.

Are there other players in the Irish Prem on the shortlist who won't get permits according to the game?

Who are the Serbians, out of interest?

Sorry one Serb (Stefan Colovic) and one Austrian (Alexander Kogler).

They are the only two players playing in Ireland that need a WP, 78 players (in my search) in the league don't require one, including individuals from Cape Verde and Nigeria.

If they are Gibraltan they shouldn't need a WP, however Spanish nationals who play in Gibraltar should.

I have just looked again, of the 55,000 players on my player search screen (filtered to interested in a transfer), only 25 would get a WP on appeal, 23 of those are Spanish players in the Gibraltan league and 2 are Serbians in the Irish Premier Division. Surely this is bugged!? Can someone at SI confirm if these figures sound correct because to me only 25 players out of 55,000 likely to get a WP using the appeal process sounds extremely low.

EDIT: I did a bit more testing, so of the 55,000 players in the search, 46,762 would require a work permit. Of these, 123 return as "work permit likely" and the 25 mentioned above as "work permit after appeal". So for teams of Birmingham City's level, only 147 players are able to be signed using the implemented WP process. The other 9k players that don't require WPs at all are UK nationals or players currently playing in the UK or on loan abroad from a team in the UK.

People from Gibraltar dont need a WP.

I'm almost certain there is a bug here. There are rejections which arent making sense and that is what has led to this thread imo. If the rules were transparent then this thread wouldnt even be needed and we could post in the bugs forum if it was a bug.

That's interesting! I will have a look when I fire it back up to make sure I got that right but I am sure the 11 players who could get a WP on appeal were Spanish who played in Gibraltar

He has just got a Work Permit on my save to move to Newcastle (They have had a takeover). I saw another poster mention scouts, all staff I have tried to bring to Burnley have got WPs.

I completely agree with the implementation of Brexit, and it would be wrong to not include something. Not including anything would go agaainst what this game tries to be which is a very realistic football manager game. They have based it on the most likely scenario post Brexit, which has been posted in numerous media outlets, with numerous sources confirming this is what is currently on the table.

However, I think there needs to be some more info on how it works, as currently Tonali gets it on one save and not another which is very weird. Especially given in my current save the example in question, Tonali has less caps and is on less money and had less Serie A appearances.

I do think the scaremongering by some in this thread stating it makes it impossible to sign players from abroad is factually incorrect, as I have proven in this thread. At worst it makes it inconsistent and unclear. Something that can easily be cleared up by SI confirming how it works in more detail.

I  completely agree with what you have said about needing to know more details.

Given the example you have just mentioned, I genuinely think there could be a bug for some and not for others, which the Tonali incident could evidence. For example, I am Birmingham City and I am REALLY struggling to sign anyone from abroad. I posted a couple of pages back that out of nearly 1200 players on my transfer list, only 11 would get a WP on appeal and 300 odd don't need one but they are pretty much all UK nationals.

EDIT: Weirdly those 11 are mostly players from Gibraltar, nobody that is above League Two standard in my opinion. So basically nobody looks like they will qualify using the points system that currently plays in a top league like La Liga or Serie A etc

Completely agree - while it is disappointing and frustrating, FM definitely should try and reflect reality as much as possible. We shall see very shortly whether what they have modelled is accurate!

But in terms of gameplay and to imrpove the experience for us, they could provide more info in the game about exactly how the new points system works. Yes they list the criteria, but it is not at all clear how different leagues and number of appearances, club position and reputation, are weighted, and how many points are needed to qualify. Some sort of explainer for this would be very helpful, otherwise the "points based system" is just a black box. Are there for example some clubs with reputations so low that no player would ever qualify?

For example, your scout or DoF, or the message you get when a work permit is rejected to say: "Johnny Foreigner work permit rejected. He also doesn't have the number of points from the other categories required (blah blah) but 22 more appearances for his current club would see him reach that level.

If FM is going to reflect reality, and that reality is a new points based system, then we should be put in the same position as real life recruitment teams, who would be able to put player information into a simple algorithm to see if they would qualify or not!

I would love that, and that's exactly what I would like to see! I don't mind players not getting a WP, but an explanation of why and what needs to change in order to get one would be nice.

In my example a few posts up I was certain my guy would get one on appeal having played regularly in La Liga all his career for a decent team, but he was rejected and would love to know on what basis.

I'm enjoying the challenge this year in the PL because of the Brexit rules. From the sounds of it people are just annoyed that they can't sign every South American 18 year old and put zero effort in scouting or squad building.

It's much harder to sign high potential teenagers with no experience, but I've signed plenty of 21-24 year olds with limited international caps for low money who improve my team. I'm also enjoying signing young English players from the EFL (there's value if you look hard enough), which is something I hadn't done much of in previous years.

People just need to expand their scouting pools and look in different places. And if you don't fancy the challenge, you can always just manage in the Bundesliga where there aren't any rules.

These are my second season signings and there's only 1 player with more than 15 international caps. If you increase your shortlist from just "Top FM Wonderkids" you'll definitely be able to find talent that can get work permits.198775876_Screenshot2020-11-21at01_11_07.png.e9d8f1beabc49bc0c2859f856392fd58.png

I never buy wonderkids as I never have enough time for them to get good. I only play about 3 or 4 seasons per year. I tried to sign a 26 year old Spaniard, albeit had 0 international caps but had played regularly in the Spanish top flight all his career but he couldnt get one on appeal. The problem I have is it seems a bit random who gets one after an appeal and who doesn't.

  9. I have just got to January 2021 and been hit with the dreaded work permit rules. I am Birmingham City, on the scouting screen there is a total of 1479 players on the transfer list who are interested in a transfer, only 350 dont require a WP, 11 WP likely and 0 work permit after appeal. Seems pretty low to me and with 0 likely to get a WP after an appeal it makes me wonder if the process is working as intended.

Probably been mentioned before, but I seem to miss 2 out of 3 penalties, regardless of the player.  I have now taken to randomly switching players every time I get a penalty, seems to have improved the success rate!

Also, no assists from corners at all in a whole season, and barely any headed goals from open play.

I have scored quite a few goals from corners and crosses. Guess it depends on your play style, I am playing a basic 442 wing play so lots of crosses getting in the box

    Are you the type where:

    1.  I have my own philosophy and style. I want my team to play the way I want and build my team based on my philosophy. I strongly believe in my system and hardly deviate except in certain circumstances. I only want players that can fit my system and not afraid of benching or selling my top players if they don’t fit into my tactics and roles.

    2.   I do not have any philosophy and I build my tactics and roles with the best players I have. I am flexible with any tactics as long it brings me results. I often buy players not prioritising on position and roles but the best players available in the market and tweak my tactics to fit the player.

    3.  I  am motivated by my favorite club in real life and replicate  tactics based on my favorite club. I also replicate tactics based on top clubs in the world and try to play like them. I often go the tactics forum to get advice how to set up tactics like Barca, Liverpool, Juventus……and getting frustrated when it is not what i expected and keep starting a new save.

I belong to type #1. Always been a fan of the old school 4-4-2 direct and fast football. Use wingers as my main source of attack to put crosses in the box. My alternate formations are  3-4-3 , 4-4-1-1 or 4-2-4 as long it is wing play and putting  crosses in the box. Tried to be like a manager in #3 and tried replicating current Spurs. But it is just not me to play possession based football and using 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 just like how Spurs is playing currently.

I am exactly the same.....442 get it out wide and get the cross in!!!

Honestly, i don't think just posting "the game is too easy, i won the league" is helpfull in any way. Yes, it seems unrealistic when you just see the results. But i would say, at least also post the used tatics.

We had tactis in every FM edition that "broke" the game, for example with 3 pure strikers in front

I am just playing a very basic balanced 442 wing play. Got a target man on support and a pressing forward on attack, two wingers on attack a CM defend and a CM advanced playmaker on support. Nothing unusual or out the box here, just a very basic setup.

I've not lost a game yet and im nottingham forest and i'm seeing opposition strikers getting so many goals, for example Adam Armstrong is on 29 goals in 19 apps, and my striker has now got 23 in 20 games and my back up striker has 13 in 7 apps

    lost.png

Hmmm very similar to how mine is playing out. Scott Hogan has scored about 15 goals in all competitions so far for me. I might get through a few more months and then raise it as a potential bug if needs be.

  14. Just wanted to see how everyone else is getting on in their saves? I am really enjoying the FM21 beta so far, however I am finding it surprisingly easy! This is a small sample size as I am only 10 games into the league season, but I am playing as Birmingham City and currently I haven't lost a game in any competition. I am top having drawn 3 and won the rest of my games, and I am in the quarter finals of the league cup.

I have a decent team, media predicts us to come 9th, but I am not really struggling against anyone. Even away from home against Norwich who were top at the time I disposed of them comfortably. Maybe I have just made a flying start and have set up a tactic that suits the boys, but wanted to get a feel for how you lot are getting on in your saves?

It is an interesting change for me. I very rarely used these tools during a game anyway, I have always been a watch the match and understand what is happening from this. Are there many people who were using this frequently during a match to decide on what changes they made? Genuine question because this is alien to me and seems like a way more complicated way to play the game.

I actually think the change also makes sense. During a game is not the time to deeply analyse things. You do not have the time to do that. Besides you should have set up a tactic beforehand that you expect to help you win, and changes made during a match should not be huge anyway if you did this well. After the game is over is when you should look at the data to see if the things you planned in your tactic works, and if not make adjustments. With half time in a game being another time to do this.

I can also see why this is going to annoy a lot of people. Taking away info is always unpopular. And I have no strong feelings either way on this since I already did not use analysis.

To reply to you/add to this.....I rarely to never used any of the analysis tools during game time I always save that for after the match, and due to time constraints I only used to watch key highlights or occassionally commentary only on previous versions of the game. I would base all my tactical decisions in game on basic match stats/player ratings. Whilst this never hindered my success on football manager I understand why it takes away some of the immersion for some players who do delve into the finer details during matches.

I was more successful with a non-gegenpressing tactic last year than any gegenpressing tactic, so it was definitely not universally true.

FM21, I came second with a non-gegenpressing 442. Now, after promotion (I didn't pay a lot of attention in the first season and zoomed through it), I've played 5, won 3, drawn 1, lost 1 with a counter attacking 433 DM Wide, scoring 6 and conceding 2. We're 1000-1 to win the league.

It sickens me you have played a whole season and I have played the friendly against my 2nd team.......AND THAT'S IT!!!

  17. I have only played 1 beta, last season's. I started my main save with Birmingham City and for two seasons I had no problems whatsoever. However, once I got promoted I encountered a game ending bug whereby the board wanted me to get into the champions league straight away which completely went against the boards original vision. Unfortunately I got sacked despite being 8th in the PL. I will be starting with Birmingham City again this time around though and hoping I don't encounter anything game breaking.
