Posted yesterday about Saudi transfer activity AI. More thoughts and observations.

Saudi Arabia and the current trend around big money moves simply had to be in FM24 for realism. At the same time I'm genuinely concerned that the game doesn't have adequate AI to balance and manage this phenomenon. I also ask myself what's hardcoded into the game because this could be a trend that lasts for several seasons (think China) or it may be an indefinite gravy train.

So, is there a scenario in game that randomises these outcomes, for instance it tails off after x amount of seasons or does it just go on and on with fees and wages increasing exponentially? I ran my beta for three seasons and the transfer activity was still going strong. Has anyone seen it tail off?

I've seen big money moves to Saudi in my save but I've actually been paying more attention to what happens to players who've gone to Saudi in game and are then put up for sale. I say this because I don't feel the game has either a mechanism or adequate AI to reintegrate players back into the wage structures of regular clubs.

For instance, I saw a 28 year old Rico Henry in my save, transfer listed by Al-Hilal for 12mil. He was currently on £850k pw with 3 years left on his deal. They had signed him 12 months earlier on a 4 year deal in 2024 for £65m.

His agent advised his client was looking for a salary of £1m-£1.1m per week. So actually looking to increase his current wage not fall back into alignment with the mainstream football wages. The club were not even offering a contribution to his salary which is something I think you could reasonably expect. I watched this for 3 months until the transfer window opened and then they released him on a free. I saw the same with other players.

I suspect what happened there was a quick fix in the coding to avoid a more complex AI solution. Even so, once on a free his wage demands were circa £750k pw. I suspect these will fall slowly over a couple of seasons as he sits there as a free agent.

Multiply these patterns by the significant number and profile of players moving to Saudi in game and it's potentially a black hole for talent and a genuine flaw in the gameplay.

Half the problem is the ridiculous fees clubs demand for unwanted players. Playing as Palace I was quoted £60m for Smith-Rowe who had only played 1 game in the whole of the previous season. Jadon Sancho played zero games & Man Utd wanted ridiculous money just to take him on loan. Its only the Saudi clubs that can afford half of these players otherwise they just rot in the reserves.

  2. The Ai squad building is actually worse this year. I'm seeing a lot of bizarre transfer decisions. Arsenal signing 2 veteran keepers in one summer & Thiago Silva. Liverpool selling their only defensive mid & their top scorer Darwin Nunez without bothering to replace them. Average 25yr old Norwegians joining top clubs never to get a game. Constant loan signings that never get a run out. Most premier league sides seem to have a preferred starting 11 that they never change unless there are injuries.

In real life, Southampton 5th, Liverpool 4th, Man City are 11th.

Real Sociedad is on top in the Spanish League, Villareal and Granada are 3rd and 5th respectively, Barcelona is down in 10th.

How is this unrealistic? Would be boring if the same teams won it every year

Yeah but this is after 9 games not 38 games & I'd be very surprised if the table looks this way by May.

Well how boring would it be if the same old teams just keep winning . Its not the point of the game for you to pick a top team and just sit back and win .

I haven't picked a top team I'm not even in the Premier league. Yes its nice to see other teams challenging but I think Southampton as title contenders in first season is stretching it a bit

I suspect the system as implemented is so restrictive that nobody actually passes the work permit test in FM21. I've yet to see a single player my scouts say would pass as yet.

When I have time I will holiday 5 then 10 years into the future and count how many foreigners are in the Premier league and championship at the start of the game, 5 years in and then 10.

I suspect by 10 years in it will be close to almost zero.

I have to say I agree. Managing Forest & after an injury crisis I'm struggling to find a decent striker. Thought I'd plump for Pato or Balotelli as a short term solution but no chance since brexit. I'm basically ruled out of signing any foreigners unless they are top class internationals. My options to continue my promotion push are lower league rejects on free transfers or 17yr olds on loan deals.

OH! And one thing I forgot about the player talk I posted two posts up - after I've said my peace to the player, I have to click through two reaction pages to get back to the game. Everywhere we go in this game, there's just more and more clicks that are so freaking unnecessary. I do not get it. At all. Anyway, here's from the matchday:

First of all, look at that red box. What am I supposed to use that information for? It's completely unusable and pointless to even include. At least let me decide if I want to remove it in favor of some other information page I could use that space for instead.

No for the bottom bar (green square). I don't like having it up when watching highlights, so I just pull it down. Fine, no problem. But then I want to have a shout, and for that, I need to pop it back up, shout, and then pop it back down. Tedious. Then I want to make a sub, oh great, you have a button there I can just press - good. But then after I've done the substitution, that bar pops back up so I have to close it again. Tedious. Again, this is really a small thing (and should be easy to fix), but as a player it gets really tiring having to constantly deal with these small annoyances.

This thing in the red box (player movements or passes i assume). Yeah its a major annoyance for me. Its such a mess & completely pointless. Makes the whole screen look untidy.

and how has it been for you over your league season? because for me my top scoring striker had 19 goals in the league

    some more examples:

    Lewandoski 15 goals in 2020/21 & 19 goals in 2021/22.

Harry Kane 17 goals in 2021/22.

    Icardi 13 goals in 2020/21 & 18 goals in 2021/22.

    Cavani 21 goals in 2020/21.

    Salah 13 goals in 2020/21 & 14 goals in 2021/22.

If anything the most unrealistic thing that I've seen so far is that Messi is still playing for Barcelona in my save :D

Either that or Martial being sold to Barcelona for £131 million this past transfer window ;)

Its still early days for me. A 2-2 draw in the League Cup then off to work on a nightshift. Glad to know the season doesn't end up a goalfest & its probably just something that occurs in pre season friendlies. Mind you the real life season is seeing scorelines more like ice hockey at the mo.
