  1. Thank you both for your valuable comments.

The low Marking and Positioning for Drmic are worth a look but appear only to apply to defensive situations. They would be a plus for Veiga, however.

I had a closer look at the match analysis and can see many 1v1 contests between these 2 players rather than the centre-backs. Specifically, my right winger is putting in lots of crosses and Veiga is winning the header at the far post each time (would have been a goal otherwise).

    image.png

Changing the type of crosses looks to be a good suggestion. Though given that Drmic had the mobility to get to these contests I guess I still have a query whether Veiga's superior Pace and Stamina would be decisive in the contests themselves. I could imagine Acceleration being useful here but they are equal (12) for that.

You are completely right to point out that Drmic is not ideal as an IF. It's just that I already have the superior Petkovic playing centrally and I wanted to fit in another finisher somewhere without playing two strikers. He did actually score a couple of goals in another game but long term it may be better to have a natural wide player there that has the necessary athleticism to play the role properly as you suggest.

  2. So I'm playing with Dinamo Zagreb, an easy team to manage in a league where they are dominant. We are top of the league so things are going well but I'm keen to learn and get even better. We won our recent match 2-0 but the stats for my left-sided IF Josip Drmic are disappointing.

The standout stat was 14 headers contested, only 1 won. I checked the opposition stats and saw that right back Veiga (the natural opponent) won 10 headers and lost 1.

When I compare the two of them I see they are very equal in terms of Heading, Jumping Reach, Aggression, Anticipation and Bravery. Any ideas why this was such a mismatch?

  3. I've been managing Atherstone Town recently and managed to climb from Level 10 to Vanarama North. Unfortunately, at that point I had zero balance and my best players are suddenly wanting £500 p/w, but still my board wants me to reach the playoffs. So I'm starting again with Hallam who have the biggest crowds at Level 10.

I had a couple of ideas that might help a little bit:

    - I managed to negotiate my own manager salary down from £525 p/w to £190 p/w, saving the club £17,000. Not 100% sure if that saves the club money or if that comes directly from the chairman's pocket? UPDATE: Manager wages definitely included in Staff Wages paid by the club

    - cup replays potentially mean double revenue for the same tie - worth conceding to manufacture a draw or not worth the risk of missing out on the next round?

    - Hallam has an affiliate club (Sheffield) who have agreed to play a friendly and we get to keep all gate receipts (income £9,000). Hoping I can play them multiple times but it might be a one-off.  UPDATE: this turned out to be a one-off

    - dominate the league such that youth players can be played in dead rubber matches to save on appearance fees - not tried this, may not be worth upsetting players?

Anyone tried these or have other ideas?

  4. You could start with looking at where you are losing out in comparison to your opponents. Too many fouls, lay off the pressing/tackling a bit. Inferior possession, should you press a bit more? These are just examples, any problem you find may have numerous possible solutions. Plus, it depends what you are trying to achieve with your tactic and is that working? For example, your possession stats might be inferior but if you are not playing a possession-based style you may not care (e.g. Leicester 2016).

Have you read Line and Diamonds? Pretty much everything that happens in the game can be understood in terms of the 14 principles it describes. If you know how you want to implement those principles in your style that may guide what stats to look for to see if it's working.

You also need to watch some of the game itself to understand the stats in context. For example, the stats might show a shot on the edge of the box but did that come from a prolonged passing phase or a 10 second counter attack?

  5. I just started playing this with Atherstone Town in the Midland League Division 1. I'm no expert but finding it relatively easy to top the league through quite basic tactics and recruiting free agents significantly better than the opposition. Did others find this? At what point does reality bite as you move up the ladder? I assume there gets a point where it's near impossible to move higher due stadium size, fanbase, reputation etc?

Actually quite enjoy being able to hire and fire players whenever I like as they are all non-contract. Also, playing at a poor standard seems to makes it easier to see the effect when certain players have some good attributes.

UPDATE: Actually, I realised I've made this easy by giving myself Continental reputation, no wonder so many are keen to play for me. I've excluded myself from the Level 10 Challenge in the process, but I'm fine with that for now.

  6. As per the advice, I've moved away from using specific PIs for now and looking to play about with roles. On this subject, I recently splashed out on a new Advanced Playmaker, Pellegrini. First full match wasn't great though, only 78% pass completion, bit of a problem when the AP is getting most of the ball. I'm still using this Gegenpress preset (except Tempo down 1 notch):

    image.png.4445aa18679a47322f1b35fc8a867585.png

The pass map for Pellegrini looks like this:

    image.png.be7378eb85ce5774554e02aa99de2e41.png

Seems like he has all the desirable passing attributes (Anticipation, Passing, Technique, Teamwork, Flair, Vision, Decisions):

    image.png.864b34863a1d89225141c9e7bce58716.png

What I did notice is Pellegrini has Trait 'Tries Killer Balls Often'. I see on GuideToFM that Pass Into Space (part of tactic) and Risky Passes (part of Role) are complementary to TKBO. So is it that all three are combining here into an extreme Risky Passes instruction? I suppose that would mean that, despite being a natural AP, Pellegrini is an unsuitable AP for this particular tactic as things stand. Hopefully I have answered my own question here but would be good to know if others agree.

The other obvious thing is how many POP there are on the right flank. He's playing centrally, in fact the purple dot in centre circle shows Average With Ball slightly left of centre. I'm not exactly sure why this is happening but have a couple of theories:

    1) He's two-footed, but has a slight right foot preference. I watched the clips and see some (not all) the passes were with the slightly weaker foot.

    2) Relative speed of Wingbacks. Alaba left WB, has speed 16, Kimmich on the right only 12. So maybe Kimmich is not quick enough to get there? I'm not sure though, the clips show he's not quite reaching some of them but other passes are so bad not even Usain Bolt would get there.

Do either of these theories make sense or would it be something else?

  7. I'm playing FM19 with Bayern Munich, Gegenpress preset except tempo down 1 notch.

Has anyone seen much impact from using the Cross Less Often PI? Against Man U after 18 mins I was unimpressed with the Wingbacks kicking 13 failed crosses into opposing defenders...

    image.png.5267a6555a12090264960e5655a6d338.png

So for Alaba Wingback(S) I chose Cross Less Often. For Rafinha, I had to change Duty to Support so Cross Less Often became available, then added the attack PIs Get Further Fwd, Cross From Byline. Watched the game for a bit and couldn't see much difference. Likewise, the stats at half-time seem to show the crossing mania continued...

    image.png.cf6d0a04c139e20516989e7ec4a8b0f7.png

How realistic is it to expect to see some evidence of the change I've made by watching the game? What should I look for in the stats? Could the Cross From Byline PI interfere with the CLO instruction, I read guidetofm about this and didn't find anything...

I notice Rafinha made a lot more passes. I thought perhaps it could be that although Rafinha made more crosses he actually made less crosses as a % of his number of touches? So I decided to check this out. In the first 18 mins he had 38 touches and made 6 crosses (15%). After the change he had 78 touches and made 9 crosses (11%). So there's a small difference but not sure it's significant, nor even due to my change necessarily?

On a related note, the stats available in Player Analysis don't match Player Stats so guess that's a bug:

    image.png.8a8ea0489610d7520c483df3757015c7.png

Better news on the Team Analysis, though not sure what it tells me:

    image.png.6b9f3e19503d55838a66fec17c6e962f.png

Didn't post full tactic as it's very close to the preset as I mention, also the question is specifically about this PI and what I should be looking for to understand what difference it makes. Rafinha and Alaba have Decisions 14 and 15 respectively, so I assume that is high enough to pay some attention to the instructions I am giving them (if it makes a difference).

  8. I'm managing Bayern in FM21 Touch. I'm really still beginner at tactics so following the advice of Rashidi and trying out some of the presets as well as his Bayern Vertical Tiki Taka tactic that he posted recently. One thing I noticed, the tactics recommended by the Assistant with the thumbs up changes from time to time. I had Wing Play suggested previously but not now, Tiki-Taka and Control Possession are recommended now when they weren't before. Why would this change while I've still got the same players? There's always three suggested options, just not the same three.

  9. Thanks for the comments, I am going to think more about styles of play, starting with presets, to try and understand why they are setup as they are. I've actually decided to give Bayern Munich a go as I read elsewhere that they have the players for most styles so might be easier to get more of them working successfully.

Perhaps the challenge for me, and other newbies, is thinking about systems holistically and higher level concepts such as style, shape, support, mobility etc... I think I need to understand those better first, rather than trying to see what different settings do in isolation.

  10. 28 minutes ago, Experienced Defender said:

What style of football are you looking to implement with this tactic?

I am asking because I've noticed some tactical contradictions in your system,

Possession-based, pressing/win ball back quickly, patient build-up. I suppose I was hoping to emulate the principles of @herne79's Possession with Attacking Intent but adapting to the players at hand rather than blindly copying every single setting.

Perhaps I have complicated it by thinking about overloads?

On the other hand, I am open to trying any style of play that is suitable for this group of players.

  11. Thanks @Rashidi

That makes sense, as so often with this game then, it is about the combination of factors (in this case attributes) that lead to the outcome (as irl), much as I would like to able to pin things down to a single cause.

I guess there is a relationship between Aggression and Bravery as they seem very similar. In the case of the sliding tackle I can see it's the defender taking the risk and therefore needing the Bravery. But in the case of going for header the risk of injury would be more equal so wouldn't both Attacker and Defender need some combination of Aggression and Bravery? Or does the Attacker only need Aggression?

  12. More great stuff :)

One thing I'm not clear on is how does one see the impact Mentals such as Bravery and Determination have in the game itself? It doesn't seem very obvious to me compared to, for example, seeing someone with high Jumping Reach winning a header. To put it another way, if you have two central defenders, one with Bravery 1 and the other 20, and all other stats the same, how would this manifest itself during a match? Would one see the Bravery 1 defender pulling out of tackles or is it more a case of looking at tackle win % over the course of a season?

  13. Anyone mind taking a look at my Liverpool tactic? I have read a few of the guides and attempted to apply some of the principles to the (admittedly good) players available at Anfield. I have a feeling I'm not far off but should be getting more out of these players...

    Tactic.PNG.1d354253cac4ecadaa674f39a0618850.PNG

I just played Man U and won 1-0 at home (Woo Hoo!). A few notes on how I arrived at this point...

    - I borrowed heavily from @herne79's excellent Possesssion With Attacking Intent, leading to Higher DL/LOE and Close Down More for the front five. I actually tried it with West Ham itself though couldn't quite replicate the same results for whatever reason. I have also used Positive mentality and Much Higher DL/LOE with Liverpool but was wary of doing that against Man U.

    - I also read @llama3's Pairs and Combinations (another gem!) which led me to having the mixed Attack/Support combinations on the wings, as well as the De/Su/At mix in midfield.

    - @Rashidi has talked a lot about overloads so attempting that down the left but not got that working yet. I probably need an AP in the AML position but not sure that suits Salah or Mane and was trying to fit the Fab 3 into this formation somehow. Salah is the better finisher than Mane (18 v 15) so I guess he would be the '3rd man' if I ever got that working.

    - Firmino has Come Deep player trait so went for a dropping deep type SC role with the hope of the IF(A) running in to use that space. Could have gone with a False 9 as seems quite similar.

    - Chose Gini as CM(A) on the opposite side to the IF(A) as he has Gets Fwd and Arrives Late PTs, in the hope he might also get into the space vacated by Firmino. He also has Get Further Fwd and Roam PIs.

    - Less sure about the BBM and DLP, I find it quite difficult to spot the impact various roles make. I can see the DLP acting as a 'ball magnet' and trying slightly longer passes. The BBM is I suppose adding some movement up and down compared to a CM. Fab has Long Range Passes and Hendo has Switch Flank PT which I thought might help with the switching play though again it's hard to spot the difference it makes.

    - Went for a BPD and CD just to see if I spot the difference (guess what, I couldn't!). I get that the BPD is meant to ping longer passes but looked at a comparison of the passing maps and they look the same to me...

I just played Man U and won 1-0 at home (Woo Hoo!). These are the stats:

    Stats.png.31f99423249ec84cebcc75028f8c4aad.png

So it works from a dominating possession pov and I suppose beating Man U is a good result but still I think it could be better. We only got the 1 goal from Salah, poking in a follow-up Moreno cross after a corner. With all that possession, 7 SOT doesn't seem that great. Man U have conceded 16 from 16 games this season so I'm thinking with the players I've got that scoring a couple of goals isn't an unrealistic target. A couple of notes from what I saw watching the game:

    - Moreno does a lot of rubbish crosses, kicking it straight into the man closing him down, the stats bear this out. Cross Less Often PI not available for FB or WB on Attack. Note, I didn't change anything during the game to ensure the stats were representative of the tactic shown.

    - Mane does like a dribble, often down cul-de-sacs! He does pick out others occasionally but not as much as I'd like

    - Apart from the high possession stats, most of things I say I'm aiming for above don't really seem to be working that well. We are obviously keeping the ball a fair bit but not really creating the chances. When the ball does get switched across midfield it seems to happen too slowly to cause problems (Lower Tempo causing this?)

Just to add, I am sticking with FM19 for now as there are a lot more guides available compared to FM20. I'm sure a lot of the principles still apply but trying to limit the variables where possible. Also, in terms of best way to learn the game I assume it's best to master the tactics with a top team first with capable players on FM Touch before attempting LLM with players that are much more limited. Anyone have a different take on that?

Well, that's it, maybe it's a bit long but I imagine you prefer to see I'd at least put some thought into it before posting...

  14. I'm new to this but I've been comparing the Team Instructions in the article with the typical changes caused by a change to a higher mentality. From what I've read, a move from Standard Mentality to Control/Attacking means Higher Tempo, More Risky Passes, Higher Defensive Line, Closing Down More and Play Wider. Two of the TI's in the article, Lower Tempo and Retain Possession, seem to be the opposite of the first two Mentality effects, Higher Tempo and More Risky Passes (also the two that most harm possession, of course), I guess effectively disabling them.

So I suppose the remaining Mentality effects and the additional TI's create what I like to think of as a 'Custom Mentality' (Possession-based Attack?), the effect compared to Standard being Higher Defensive Line, Closing Down More, Play Wider, Play out of Defence and Roam From Position. Perhaps the same could be said for using PIs plus the Traits of certain players to make 'Custom Roles' e.g. Inside Forward + Shoot More Often + Shoots With Power = Shot-happy IF etc...

Does anyone else think of it this way or find this in anyway helpful?
