  1. O Canada!

In 2057, against the odds, Canada lifts the CONCACAF Gold Cup trophy for the first time since 2035 and, with it, I finished this challenge!

    image.png.06240e8fd2331ec122b5c9a5fd833ad4.png

It took me a hell of a long time in real life (I took a four month hiatus from the game) and in the game. I captured my penultimate trophy in 2049 and wasn't able to score the final trophy for another 8 years. USA and Mexico refused to accept my job application despite my accolades so I had to build up Canada to compete with #1 Mexico and #13 USA.

I'm thrilled to finally complete this challenge, thanks to @vikeologistfor being the caretaker of it.

  2. It's been a while since I played FM but, with FM 23 coming out, I wanted to make sure I finished off what I started.

I was fired by the USA for a disappointing Gold Cup. I found myself being hired by AC Milan who was in a bit of a down period. I managed them for six seasons, only able to muster a Coppa Italia, never able to get above 2nd place in Serie A. On top of that, we had made it to the UEFA CL final but fell painfully short.

    image.png.6625b3e0dc70b53b8a0e0d68f46b88ce.png

After the third season in a row finishing Top 3, the Inter and Juventus jobs opened up. While Inter wanted nothing to do with me, Juve extended me the job.

    image.png.5d83cef157f461353404bd28a28d8e95.png

Both Juve and Inter had much larger budgets than Milan and I was able to put Juve's to good use quickly. We ran through the season with little opposition and had a record-setting offense. We scored 138 goals and only allowed 18 over the course of the Scudetto. My striker had 29 goals and 10 assists and my inside fowards had 35 goals/9 assists and 35 goals/22 assists. Outside of Serie A, we racked up a UEFA CL win along with a win in the Club World Cup

This leaves me with one trophy to go: the Gold Cup. This will be a very tough nut to crack. Mexico has been ranked #1 for years and the USA is in the Top 10. The next closest is Costa Rica in 49th and the other countries aren't particularly close to CR. The only saving grace is that Mexico's manager is in his 60s. I can only hope he is considering retirement after a few Gold Cup trophies and an 88% win percentage through more than 70 games.

There was no noticeable slow down. In fact, as I was deleting records from the database, the performance improved the more records I removed.

Let's say the difference was 5 minutes to delete 500 records vs 15 seconds.

Interesting. You said you were also using a script to automate this. What language were you using?

I can confirm that not saving the file seems to resolve the issue. I've already caught up to my previous point.

I'll log a bug for the performance issue after saving when I get a spare moment, so that it can hopefully be resolved for FM 23.

So, to confirm, if you open the editor and load in the most recent database, as long as you do not "Save Editor Data As..." until after you make the desired changes, it'll run quicker? How fast are we talking?

  5. 2042-2043

After the World Cup, I left Spain and found myself completely detached from both club and country. Fortunately, South Korea, a perennial Asian Cup contender, fired its coach after a poor performance in the World Cup...

    image.png.bafeb10c6e4449e10245e03833c08c24.png

and the Asian Cup was right around the corner...

    image.png.b50115504194a4ad8af387d97951cef5.png

With a win in the Asian Cup, my last international stop was to go back to North America to contend for the Gold Cup.

    image.png.c19a33a3b011179de36509b0bc522478.png

The USA is the second best team in CONCACAF at the moment, having been bumped out of the Gold Cup by Mexico in 2043 and not winning the competition since 2025. Mexico is the second best country in the world and it will take a big effort to unseat them.

  7. 2041 - 2042

Veni, vidi, vici -- I came, I saw, I conquered. PSG had a vice grip on Ligue 1 for twenty straight seasons. That ended when I returned to Marseille to finish what I had started.

     image.png.b07853e2eb0b82a26208ffc7b3473c7d.png

We also beat PSG in the Coupe de France final on penalties. We almost had an invincible season except for a 1-0 loss to Nice on the last day of the season.

With the Ligue 1 trophy securely in my cabinet, it's time to bid adieu to France and set my sights on Serie A. The hope is to work on my international management while waiting for one of Inter, AC Milan, or Juve to open up. While my sights will be on the domestic title and the league cup, I will have to build this team into one that is capable of winning both the Champions League and the Club World Cup which will be a departure from my turn-and-burn strategy up to this point of the challenge. I still have the World Cup this year as well in which my Spanish side will have as good a shot as any to come away with the crown.

Notch another one on the tally, the long drought without an international cup is over!

    image.png.42eddc83d39d9f4b268de36eba8dec26.png

Germany made it incredibly difficult, and made me sweat when they scored their goal in the 90'+4, but we were able to lock down the match. However, as the media would point out later, my squad had 15 players who were over the age of 30. The talent base in France was aging and there were not many youngsters stepping into the void. Spain came to me and asked me to helm their team into the World Cup and...vamanos!

    image.png.3c9d83de49a5f52440981b1a3351f4c2.png

I had left Liverpool before the Euros and was looking for a new domestic club. I only have Ligue 1 and Serie A left to conquer and would need to have a team that could overtake PSG or Juventus, respectively. It wouldn't hurt if the team had the cash and facilities to help me win the Champions League and the Club World Cup, to boot. After sitting out a full season, I found myself back in familiar territory...

    image.png.2034e35bc70b73fdc8d05faa1b2f8e73.png

Marseille had finished just seven points shy of PSG the year prior and were in the Champions League. They also gave me $100M to work with. Now, I get to work trying to take down the giant that has not lost a Ligue 1 championship in decades.

  9. 2039-2040

Given another lease on life with Liverpool, I made a few big moves to try and patch up my weaknesses. I needed every single dollar spent as I won the league on goal differential.

    image.png.f625f91d616b7842ea0394bbfa1bdd46.png

    image.png.1868ff73d32d81f868f3b19e5fdcfa66.png

It was a nerveracking year but I get to move on from the EPL which has been my toughest endeavor to date. I only have the Serie A, Ligue 1, one more league cup, UEFA Champions League, and the Club World Cup to go in the domestic game. My international shortcomings are going to bite me as I still need the Asian Cup, the Euros, the Gold Cup, and the World Cup. That will probably take another six to eight seasons, unfortunately.

TL;DR- I'd rather not change the challenge in the middle of FM22.

Generally speaking, I'm reluctant to change the challenge at all. It's just a me thing perhaps. I don't like change.

That said, I might be open to the idea of changing things for FM23. I think it actually would change the challenge, but then again it might be an excuse to start a new thread, and maybe have a resurgence of interest before the game itself changes the challenge (for instance with the introduction of women's football).

The both good and bad thing about limiting the leagues is that it standardises the challenge, but also means that folk like you and I who've done this challenge a few times fancy a few modifications to the hamster wheel, (not to mention I've been reading about the hamstering for nearly 8 years now).

The league thing was something that was decided by everybody in the first year or so, and on the whole I want the challenge to stay the same, rather than 'evolving'. (I didn't even want to change the starting age 20 thing, but someone started it older, and experiments proved that it made zero difference, although for all I know there are consequences at the other end, e.g. being a very old manager.

It wouldn't bother me if someone started a new challenge with all leagues playable. One of the thoughts behind the limitation originally was to encourage other people to think up new challenges with the custom leagues, which I think has happened.

I don't necessarily want the challenge to go on forever. In fact at one point I wanted to stop the thread (and implicitly the challenge) after 100 pages of the last thread. 'For everything there is a season' etc.

So if all leagues were introduced for FM23, I'd kind of want it to be a year long farewell party for the challenge, (although obviously the challenge wouldn't actually end. I'd just stop overseeing it for FM24).

Bear in mind that 8 people completing on FM21 was a record for the thread, though of course the glory days of the thread were a while ago.

Finally, when women's football is introduced, I will integrate it into a new Ultimate FM Challenge, and that basically will be new leagues into the challenge. I expect that will happen in FM24.

Obviously I welcome everybody's thoughts on these matters. Do people want RB's opening up of leagues?

Perhaps it can be something for people who have already completed the challenge once? Kind of like other video games where you beat the campaign normally and then a challenge mode is available.

  11. Despite having won La Liga and the Bundesliga, getting a job at the top level of Europe was very difficult after my spells in Mexico and South Africa. Finally, though, Marseille picked me up.

    image.png.b20072fa2ac1581cbbe7cee77b520d45.png

However, nearly 15 years in the future, PSG has completely locked down the league with them continuing their win streak from the start of the save. I was able to nab the Coupe de France off them, though.

    image.png.68b3d3eecb35b8caae615d425f23bbfe.png

I finished in second place in Ligue 1 but was nearly 15 points behind PSG. There would be a long struggle to overcome them. However, Liverpool reached out to me for a job interview and I couldn't resist the call from a talented, rich club. As an apology to Ligue 1, I took on their National Team while getting ready for a World Cup and European Championship.

    image.png.59bea21b7445f056ed42b92f37e66c02.png

In my first season at Liverpool, I won the FA Cup but the season was otherwise labeled as a disaster. I was unable to qualify for Champions League and the board called a meeting to discuss my future. With the board asking for my last words, I asked them "who are you going to hire that's better than me?" as a cynical retort to what I assumed was a decision already made. Much to my surprise, they agreed. I was kept on for another year.

  12. 2034-2036

I just realized I forgot to post 2034-2035 results from my first year as the Kaizer Chiefs manager. As such, it'll be a bit truncated and blended with the 2035-2036 season.

I was bounced out of the World Cup by Spain in the quarterfinals. The FA were displeased and canned me. Since then, I haven't been able to land an international job which is pretty strange for a guy with so many trophies, including the international level.

I was able to get the jump on the year winning the Super 8 Knockout tournament. While this isn't a challenge-eligible trophy, it set the team on the right foot. Throughout this first season, we were able to seal the top league knockout trophy along with the FA cup. The cherry on top was sealing the league which qualified us for the Champions League.

    image.png.c9278957b7b87fc115988af5ee79ecf3.png

In 2036, the South African trophies and league were the lowest priority behind the Champions League but it didn't show at the Group Stage. After winning the play-in, we drew two games and lost the third, placing us in last place of the group. We were able to rattle off three straight wins to top the group, though. From there, we rattled through the knockout stage to secure the trophy.

    image.png.584470617ee773fa535f3cbd0d8ab00a.png

With all of the African trophies checked off, I move on to Europe in hopes of securing the Serie A, Ligue 1, and Premier League trophies along with picking up the last three league cups. And maybe, just maybe, some international teams will offer me a freakin job.

Cruz Azul - FIFA Mobile 21 - FIFPlay

After winning La Liga and La Copa del Rey, I decided to head to Liga MX to pick up three more trophies: Liga MX, Copa MX, and the CONCACAF CL. Using a slight alteration of the tactic that earned my striker 60 goals over all competitions last season, I was able to ride another magnificent performance off a young, until-now-unknown striker in the Aperatura.

    image.png.fc4e6ed612426232014350c518af8311.png

In the Copa MX, we strolled through with relative ease while picking up a few records for the tournament along the way.

    image.png.26626aac62e6447e00c459722fa6405f.png

The sweat started to drip, though, in the CONCACAF CL Final against Guadalajara. However, when it came to penalties, it was shockingly undramatic.

I came to North America like Julius Caesar: I came, I saw, I conquered. Time to move on to either South Africa, Italy, France, or England!

  14. 2032-2033

After leaving Borussia Dortmund, I landed at Atletico de Madrid who was in some financial straits (only $10M for transfer budget) while paying over $200M a year in salary to six players. After shipping five of them out and moving that extra payroll to the transfer budget, I was able to bring in some guys to fit my tactic that I've been using lately. What came next was a shocking success where we stampeded the league and won the Copa del Rey. Although, despite my trophy-winning, the media can't seem to get over the fact that I lost in the Copa do Brasil in my first year at Santos:

    image.png.fa7c61a1701ee258112f2077d3c5ff16.png

We swiftly followed that up by clinching La Liga. It was a runaway effort with little doubt from the jump largely thanks to our amazing #9 and #10 combo. We set the record for most points in La Liga and had a goal differential that exceeded our point total.

    image.png.e9532e08e93e570575cf62b8060251c3.png

We even messed around and won the Europa League.

    image.png.22de48fab2f2ba94afb9a0db89bf2fc5.png

I'm now looking around at other job openings. Some Mexican ones have popped up that are intriguing since I still need to win the CONCACAF CL and the rest of the European powers are currently stable.

  15. 2031-2032

The 2031-32 season was a very successful one. Taking over for Borussia Dortmund, my task was to unseat the team that had won the Bundesliga 19 times in a row, Bayern Munich, and win a cup where Dortmund has been runner-up more than they have won, the DFB-Pokal. On top of that, we were in the Champions League. While we were unceremoniously bounced in the first knockout round of the Champions League, we won the Bundesliga by 20 points and sealed the double with a DFB-Pokal win. The summer of 2032 brings an opportunity to win the Copa America with Argentina but the German double gave me my 10th trophy in 10 seasons! This is the furthest I've ever gotten on this challenge and hope that I can pick up the pace on trophy-winning.

  16. 2030

2030 was a very eventful year. As the manager of Brazil and Santos, I had the chance to win the Serie A, Copa do Brasil, Copa Libertadores, and the World Cup. In short, we went 50% on the year for our goals. In the World Cup, we lost a heartbreaker to France in the knockout after going to penalties. This resulted in the Brazilian FA deciding to fire me for not reaching their goal (the semi-finals). Interestingly enough, the Argentinian FA was hot on their heels to swoop me up. This sees me in prime position to get the team sorted to compete for the Copa America in 2032.

With Santos, the league race was tight until about the World Cup break, after which we turned on the gas and were able to win the competition with four games to go. We were bounced from the Copa do Brazil in the quarterfinals as well but were able to press on and defeat Fluminense in the Copa Libertadores final with a stoppage time goal. Having secured another domestic league trophy alongside the continental trophy, it's tough to justify sticking around to pick up the Copa do Brazil. I might cut my losses and try to make up the shortage in leagues with multiple eligible cups (ex: English FA Cup and the Carabao Cup). With Brazil being a calendar year league, there will be plenty of teams ready to fire their manager here soon.

  17. 2027 - 2029

I've lumped a few years together here as it's hard to tell one part of the story without the other.

After having the season of my life at Guangzhou Evergrande, featuring an Invincibles domestic campaign with a Super League title, Champions League title, eight Manager of the Month awards, and the Manager of the Year award, I was enshrined in the Asian Hall of Fame and took my leave. I spent a few months unemployed, enjoying my time and carefully planning my next move. I finally landed on taking a job from Club Brugge who saw their own manager leave for Ajax after a championship season. I figured this would be a great way to mark another double on my sheet and create some legitimacy for myself amongst European teams. I promised them that I would not apply for other club jobs for a year and I had no problem abiding by that.

Literally five days in, I saw the South Korea National Team had a job opening. They have been the Asian powerhouse during my save and I still need to win the Asian Cup. I applied for the opening and immediately had a big red email hit my inbox. The board was furious that I would apply for another job. I was already managing the Ivory Coast and figured that switching international teams wouldn't be an issue. I tried to be apologetic but it was no use, Brugge fired me only five days after they hired me. Because of this snafu, my application for South Korea was withdrawn and it was filled with someone else. A truly devastating turn of events.

I was sour on my options available for domestic clubs and took on with the Chile national team. They were squarely in last place for the World Cup Qualifiers but the Copa America was coming up and I figured I could take a shot at shithousing my way through it. I wasn't able to win but I got to the Semi-Finals and lost out on penalties. That performance allowed me to apply and get the Brazil National Team job who are sitting at a cushy 2nd place in the FIFA rankings.

After a few months as the Brazil manager, and clinching World Cup qualification, I was given two offers for a club job: one from Santos, a team who finished 3rd in Brazil and lost in the Copa Libertadores final the year before, and Inter Milan, a team sitting second behind Juve and Roma and who had a $250M budget that the board "expected me to spend all of" the following season. While it was a very tough decision, I figured there are more clubs who are able to win the UEFA Champions League than there are clubs who could win the Copa Libertadores, and Santos appeared to be one of them.

The season started off with flying colors. We won the Sao Paolo state contest only losing once and with an incredible goal differential of +43 over 16 matches. Similarly, the Copa Libertadores was going better than could have been asked for. In a group with River Plate, Nacional, and Olimpia, we only lost one match and won the group. The second round had us playing Boca Juniors, ironically, and we were able to dispatch them 3-1 in aggregate. Playing all these matches between Serie A, Copa Libertadores, and the Brazilian domestic cup was definitely having an effect on my players and I had to prioritize the cups over the league which cost us some places. Overall, we were barreling towards a potential one year stint for me at Santos with a triple crown of the domestic league, domestic cup, and continental cup.

In August, however, the first wheel fell off that wagon. After going 14-6-7 across all competitions, we lost in the fourth round of the Copa do Brasil 1-0 to Gremlo. A shocking result no doubt but it did feel like an anomaly. After that shock exit, we went 1-5-5 over all competitions including a 4-2 flame out against Fluminense in the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals. By the end of this skid, it was Match Week 31 out of 38, we were sitting in 6th place (outside of Copa Libertadores qualifying), and six points behind fifth. Needless to say, I was in disarray tactically. We were averaging 1.87 xG against, a full 0.5 goals higher than league average. Despite the board's requirement that I play attacking football, I went into Antonio Conte mode and started running five in the back to tamp down on the leaky defense. This switch ended up being enough to get me back into fourth place at season's end, qualifying for the next year's Copa and enough to save my job.

I'm still questioning where it all went wrong, but it did indeed all seem to go wrong. Looking at the xG tables in the data hub, I should have finished in 2nd place this year. On top of that, the xG numbers suggested I should have scored sixteen more goals than I did.

While this year was quite the shocker, I still have high hopes for 2030. I have another shot at the Copa Libertadores, a renewed shot at the domestic league and cup, and am going into the 2030 World Cup as the #1 ranked team in the FIFA rankings with Brazil. It'll be another difficult journey against very tough competition but 2030 could prove to be pivotal for my challenge progress. Wish me luck.

  18. @vikeologistAll great questions. Santos is in the off-season right now and didn't qualify for Copa Libertadores. Inter is halfway through the season, is sitting 9th, and has already been bounced from the Champions League but is present in the domestic cup. The season is fully salvageable though and their team is still pretty good. With such a massive transfer budget, it would also be much easier to adapt the roster than with Santos. I might take my talents to Milan.

EDIT: Santo did qualify, the schedules just have not been drawn yet. On top of that, they lost in the Finals of the Copa to Fluminense the previous year showing they're quite competitive. Now I'm leaning towards taking the Santos job, lol.

  19. So I'm in a bit of a predicament y'all. I am in between club jobs and still need to get the Copa Libertadores and the UEFA Champions League. I'm currently sitting on an offer from Inter and an offer from Santos. My thought process is that it's tougher to find an opening for a team that can truly contend for the Copa Libertadores since it's basically down to two teams from Argentina and three or four teams in Brazil but Inter is one of the true juggernauts of European football even if they're behind a Pep Guardiola-led Juventus in my save. I might have to sleep on this!

The second season at Guangzhou was a real barn burner. While I already had secured the Chinese Super League title, I had a bit of extra motivation to finish out the season. With only two draws, I was able to lead GZ Evergrande to an invincible season. I shattered all the points, wins, low-losses, etc. records and all of this culminated on a 48-game undefeated streak. Unfortunately, this did not cross over to the FA Cup as I was bumped out in the quarterfinals by Beijing Guoan. Fortunately, I had already won the FA Cup the year before. Additionally, I was able to snag the Asian Champions League trophy to boot. My time in Asia has run its course and now I will figure out where the road will take me.

After getting fired by the Galaxy, I went back to China to take over Guangzhou Evergrande with five games left in the 2025 season and a chance to make the Asian Champions League. Unfortunately, I could not do that and barely missed the cut. In 2026, I pulled off the domestic double quite comfortably.

Staying to win the AFC CL would make sense but who knows what my future holds. What I do know is that it's been hard as hell to find even a decent national team to accept my application which is making it much more difficult to get the international trophies. Here's to hoping.

In what can only be called "total BS," I was only at the Galaxy for a year before they fired me for "poor performance." Nevermind that I won the MLS Cup the year before and the US Open Cup during this season!

    image.png.ebf1c5fc01890cd20fd60850e31d34c2.png

While this was mildly infuriating, I was able to grab two of the three trophies I needed from an MLS team. Perhaps I will need to go to Liga MX to land a CONCACAF Champions League trophy.

I was able to pick up a job with HLJ Ice City, also in the second tier of China, after getting unceremoniously fired from Qindao Jonoon. I took over the team in 12th place and 21 points to finish at a respectable 7th place and a record-setting 55 points. I take no pleasure in reporting that Qingdao Jonoon only gained 8 more points in 16 games after firing me. This dropped them from 16th, outside the relegation zone, straight to the automatic relegation. A real shame.

    2021 Ghana --- --- 15 11 2 2 35 African Cup of Nations

It's been two long seasons since the last update. The 2023 season was my first full season with HLJ Ice City and it resulted in a league title and automatic promotion to the Chinese Super League. We also set the league points and league wins records. I gathered two Manager of the Month awards along with the Manager of the Year award. The next season, over 26 games, I was able to get HLJ within striking distance of the Champions League at 6th place and 4 points trailing. At that point, though, the LA Galaxy job opened up surprisingly in the MLS. The Galaxy are a club with very high expectations and a season of getting bumped out of the League Cup in the quarterfinals, flirting with missing the playoffs, and barely being in the top half of the Supporters' Shield apparently was enough for LA to send the coach on his way. I was offered the job with eight games left in the season, along with two CONCACAF group stage games, to get the team back in a respectable place. The beginning was rough after three games without a win but the rest of the season fell right into place. After getting into the playoffs, we rattled off four straight wins to secure the MLS Cup and notching the first of my domestic trophy requirements. Huzzah! We also were able to move into the qualification spots for the CONCACAF Champions League tournament.

Going into 2025, the goal will be to show out in the US Open Cup as well as make a good account of ourselves in the CCL. The biggest need is to find a striker to replace my winger at the 9 spot and sorting out the team's salary cap situation to allow for the acquisition.
