  1. This is a bug that has been present in the last few FM's but I thought I would bring it back to light for this year's edition.  So as the title says, in tthe league where the player is managing a team there are very few direct free kicks scored compared to leagues where it's just the AI.

I'm managing Blyth in the premier league and so far in the season, there have been a total of 16 direct free kicks scored after 30 games. Compared to the championship where after 41 games there have been 30 direct free kicks have been scored. In Serie A it is 36 scored after 29 games, in La Liga it's 54 after  30 games and in Ligue 1 it's 41 direct free kicks after 30 games.

Edit: not all to sure where exactly to post this, might be match engine related but none of the options seemed right.

  2. So I created my version of the 4123 but I seem to hit an "issue" with what I want.  Now first off, I have been playing the tactic as is and it is working, we're doing fine however there are a few issues I personally have and I can't seem to fix them since it means contradicting myself.  So first off, I have 2 attack duties on the left flank, which I'm not that big a fan off, and since my fullback on that flank is making overlapping runs and crossing the ball, which is all fine, I do find that we do not have that many people inside the box.

Now ideally I would change the inside forward on the right to attack and the one on the left to support, that should ensure that the inside forward on the right will try to get on the crosses from the fullback a bit more.  This however creates the issue that we would have the mezalla on attack and an inside forward on attack on the same side and I don't think that is ideal, not too sure on that one but seems logical.  Also we have the inverted wingback on the right there to help out the midfield when the mezalla charges forward.

Now we can switch the places of mezalla and the dlp but then we would have the mezalla on attack and the fullback on attack on the same side which seems to create a big defensive gap, we can solve that by making the fullback on the left an inverted wingback but then  none of this would matter.  I guess it comes down to is having a mezalla on attack and a fullback on attack on the same side not too great of a risk?

  3. Is there an option to have a player mentor others without him transfering over his PPMs?  I have Christian Eriksen who is a model citizen so a great personality to mentor others however he has the plays one-twos PPM that I don't want on my playmakers since I like to give them the PI more direct passing but that is contradicted by the "plays one-twos".

  4. When playing a winger on the right, he needs to be rightfooted to get decent crosses in. When playing an inside forward on the right and he needs to score, he needs to be leftfooted.  But what of the advanced playmaker, when playing an advanced playmaker on support in the AMR spot and as someone who needs to create chances would it be better if he was left- or rightfooted?  I want him to mostly play throughballs to the poacher or combine with the rest of my midfield.  Also does it change if he becomes an advanced playmaker on attack, since then he'll be dribbling more and taking on opposing players 1v1?

I’d stick with things. I’d likely only change something or consider it, if I was losing. I’ve done threads on this though too if you look through my topics. I think it’s entitled stick or twist. That will give you a better idea.

Thanks for the reply, found the thread in question, it was an interesting read especially down the comments since you made the point that many users seem to focus too much on the opposition.  Pretty sure I'm one of those, time to unlearn some bad habits and have the faith to just sit on my hands and let the game play out at times.

I'll link to the thread in question here.

Why would you leave it until last 15 minutes and not look to change things earlier so you have longer to get the result?

Personally what I change depends on the actual context. I can be drawing 0-0 yet playing amazing and be unlucky. Or I could be playing 0-0 and playing rubbish. So depending on the scenario I would change how I’d approach it. I don’t have a set thing to go to for scenarios. I base everything on the actual play.

i might just change a player at times. Other times might be TI’s etc.

Yes, my bad, should have clarified more.  I meant in the situation where you have been the better team, the team is playing well but they just haven't taken their chances.

  7. I noticed that you changed your winger to an inside forward, was that just because the player is better suited as an inside forward or something specific for this match?  Also if you find yourself at 0-0 with 15 minutes to play and you are looking for the goal would you then up mentality or change some TIs like tempo?  It would seem obvious to go attacking mentality to go more attacking but as you've just highlighted your attack changes so much that it could actually become worse.

Can't say I find the role overpowered or exploitative. I know how much testing has gone into the new roles, and I'd be posting in the bug forums if it seemed out of whack to me. The CV is like any other role - it needs to fit the tactic and the other roles and duties. When the tactic is balanced, you don't necessarily need exceptional players to excel in the role.

I've played a couple of players in that role, but almost none of them have been above average in terms of pace. I'm quite eager to try it out with player who is quite pacey for the level, to see how much of a difference that makes.

Something I've been mulling in this save... Anyone found any particular PPMs to be really useful for the SV?

I have 2 players for the SV role, they are pretty similar but one has the PPMs of dictates tempo and plays one-two's and he is getting better ratings then the other player.

Anyway, early signs are that the SV and the AM-S were sharing the same space when with the ball as I have been watching on the analysis tab, do you think this is a good thing or not? I went with my first instinct of not wanting that to happen, so for now I have decided to use the AM on an Attack duty and it seems to have put them a bit further apart when with the ball. Saying that though, I do like the thought of the AM-S having more space in front of him to attack.

Great article as always @Cleon and I can't wait to hear your response if you get chance :)

Ah, came here to ask the same thing, I've noticed it as well that the SV and AMC are standing on top of each other at certain times, this usually happens(or causes) when my AMC is having a bad game according to his rating.  The one thing that might be causing it is that my AMC has the PPM of moves into channels which might be causing it, I hope it's not since he is my best player and having a player unlearn a PPM takes a lot of time and usually doesn't work.

  10. Quick question about the midfield setup in a 4312.  My striker partnership is an AF with a DLF and my midfield is DLPsu/CMde/BBMsu, my question is should I have the BBM on the side of the DLF so he can make runs past him while the DLF holds up the ball or should I put him on the side of the AF so that the AF has an extra player in support since the AF will be pushing the opposing teams Dline with the BBM then making runs behind him?  Does the answer change if I swith my DLF with a F9?

Just a quick question, not the best place to ask, but I didn't want to start a major debate over it.

FM 2017 is on offer at the moment, I never upgraded from 16. Is it worth upgrading as I'm only really interested in the match engine, So is FM17's match engine worth the upgrade over 16 or should I just wait for 18?

The best change for me is that FM17 supports 64bit, it makes the game so much smoother and doesn't increase the loading times that much for long saves.

  12. Quick question about the "move into channels" player instruction, the game describes it as vertical movement, but when I searched to check what it really does I found that people (like cleon so people who tend to know a lot about the ME) say that it is a horizontal movement.  So instead of finding a pocket of space between a DM and a CD, it's more about finding space between a fullback and a central defender?  Can anyone clarify which of the two it is, a vertical or a horizontal movement?

  13. I have a question about striker duties and partnership.  I always assumed that in a 2 striker formation you would have one striker on support, being the creator and linking the midfield and attack, and the other striker on attack, as a finisher or someone who leads the line.  However recently I find myself interested in the Trequartista role as a striker but I'm having trouble with thinking of the best role to partner him with, since the Treq is a creator he needs a finisher beside him so I was thinking poacher.  But I find that having 2 strikers on attack means they get isolated in attacking transitions even with an attacking midfielder on support behind them.  So I was wondering if a complete forward on support duty could be the main goalthreat of a team(I don't think a DLF or DF would be enough of a goalthreat)?  Or does anyone have experience with a good partnership with a trequartista?

  14. I need some help getting the strikerrole in my tactic right, I've been playing a DLF on attack for half a season but he has 4 goals and 2 assists in 17 matches with a 6.63 avg rating.  I'm not sure if it's just a lack of player quality or a problem with his role.  How would you guys set up a striker in this system and can you see any other tactical issues?

  15. Yeah, I switched to a 4-4-1-1 after tinkering a bit with the 4-2-3-1, it wasn't bad, but wasn't working the way it should and the moment I switched to 4-4-1-1 everything just seemed to click.  I wanted a 4-2-3-1 cause I had an amazing inside forward but he is tearing it up in the WM spot atm, even though he "can't" play there, only has 2 red stripes in the circle, but averaging a 8.37 with 3 goals and 5 assists in 6 matches.  As for the striker, I had to bench him because he was averaging 6.09 after 3 matches and I can't figure out why, he receives a decent amount of passes so he is involved in play, he gets of a fair amount of shots with about 50% on target but he hasn't scored yet.  However I don't think that not scoring would tank his rating that hard.  He is a new signing so I'll try him again later in the season.

But Legion has launched so fm has to take the backseat for now.

  16. When adapting this system to a 4-2-3-1, would it be enough to push the Winger attack up a row and put him as a Winger support and do the same with the Wide Midfielder attack and put him on Inside Forward support?  Would I need to tweak anything else since we would be leaving more space on the wings for the opponent to use or is it more of a risk/reward kinda thing?

Also has anyone else been getting inconsistent performances from their striker?  Mine seems to get either a 8+ rating or he drops below 6.5?

  17. Like Keyzer Soze a few posts above me, I was considering a tactic with a raumdeuter on one side and an inside forward on the other side.  Since I am quite bad at setting up my own tactics I did a google search to see what other people were doing to make it work, the issue I have is that I came up with two pieces of information that kinda counter eachother.  One was a post from Rashidi on his blog explaining in detail the differences between a raumdeuter and an inside forward.  Rashidi wrote that the RMD needs someone behind him to exploit the space he leaves behind, so an attacking wingback, and that the inside forwards needs someone behind him who locks down the space behind him while the IF makes his attacking moves, so a fullback on support.  On the other hand I found information suggesting that the inside forward works a lot better when he also has someone behind him that attacks the space he creates by cutting inside and dragging defenders with him.

So which one is correct?  Would a F9 also dive into the space that the inside forward creates and would that be enough?  Or is it more that the RMD will always look to find and run into space so he will "always" leave that space behind for someone else to fill while the inside forward will not always be able to create the extra space and therefor a fullback on support is sufficient for when the IF indeed does create the extra space?

Or are both right and is it more an issue of having to balance the team defensive wise?

Also would an offensive partnership of a RMD-F9-IF be enough to dislodge teams that park the bus against you, or is that partnership something more suited to a counter attacking style since there would be more space to exploit?
