  1. I don't see what's the problem having two offensive guys in the CM in a 4-3-3? Especially when you are a top-5 team and opponents start to just sit back then even that is often not enough to get enough pressure on and you bore yourself to 0-0s with two Highlights the entire game on extended if you don't sacrifice your DM for an AM and go for 4-2-3-1 or something similar. You don't need a holding DM and a DLP in front of him when playing against a Championship team as a good PL club.

  2. So whatever I'll put it as an attachment.

The roles and instructions are kinda random at this point, just what I thought what fit the role the player had in the RBL system. But shouldn't be too bad in general. The big question is if this can work with 3 CB and then no defensive player on that side. I added instructions close down more and mark tighter so he's more aggressive towards the wing player coming down his side, not staying in the line as rigid as a CB would be. But can this work? No idea. The scheme with the ball looks like I'd want it, but in defense it could be hard.

  3. I tried to replicate the tactic that tactial-genius Julian Nagelsmann used in the league match against Frankfurt a few weeks ago using LB Halstenberg as a third CB when recycling possession but playing a normal 4 at the back after losing it,

Here I illustrated how it looked with a squad formation creator. First pic is with the ball the second against it.

So in my longterm save after leaving Fenerbahce after three years going to ManCity in 2028 I want to try replicate it. Obviously people always say the shape you see on the FM screen should be your defensive formation. So at first I just set up a basic 4-4-1-1 with the right striker (Schick) in the AM strata and trying to replicate the Halstenberg role with a simple FB-D. But even with all imaginable instructions to make him act more like a CB  (Stay narrow, fewer risks etc. etc.) he'd still run up the pitch like a true FB and it never looked like a real back-three with CBs. So I'm now at the point to say screw all these clever FM experts with their opinion on having to have the defensive shape on the screen and put on this: (can't add picture for some reason so will post in first reply)

  4. The most successful tactics for Underdogs in real life against big favorites is aggressive pressing and quick transitions after winning the ball. Look at Hasenhüttl Ingolstadt 15/16 and Nagelsmann when he played with Hoffenheim against Bayern. So it's good that finally some teams try to do that against you in this game. Underdogs that just sit deep next to never get any points in real life.

  5. RB Leipzig atm play 4-4-2 with two ultra defensive CMs and play great dominant football when needed, so it's not correct anymore to say you can't play possession in a 4-4-2 shape. In FM it's hard to do though, but mainly the problem is defensively due to the non-existent defending of Strikers so when I want 4-2-2-2 against the ball I play with the second striker in the AM strata.

  6. This tactic just doesn't make too much sense and in real life they would get pumped every game trying to sit back like that; this is just begging to get scored on especially by teams that have way better players. Tbh out of my head I only could name you the Leipzig vs. Augsburg game in the league this spring where this playstyle worked for a team in reallife in Bundesliga in the last 2 years. And this wasn't because of them being so great defensively but for Leipzig missing some great chances, that you just can't prevent when letting a great team play in your third for 90 minutes.

I understand that it's pretty intuitive as an underdog to try and sit back and defend, but I made the same mistake for so long and never was able to perform with underdog teams in FM like that. Then last year I played with Fulham and first tried similar tactics like you did here (not as extreme but in the same direction, low mentality, defensive set-up, just hope to secure a draw somehow), against superior teams. In 2 1/2 seasons I think I got one single draw against Arsenal like that. And to be honest, it wasn't fun to play like that, I was literally feeling more anxious before playing these games than before my final exams this spring.

Then I watched one of the Stalybridge videos from Rashidi and how he played on Attacking mentality against one of the leagues top-teams with a team full of players that had no business even being in this division. I tried the same and this really helps you, getting quicker transitions, exploiting spaces of these superior teams attacking you. Also playing Standard Defensive Line and Higher LOE for example to keep them outside of your third and applying pressure yourself. From that point on the results just were WAY better, lifting me from constant fight for relegation to 6th in the following season.

Since then I'd say that's my personal football philosophy I believe in (also in real life). I don't know if you understand German, but this match from Ingolstadt in Munich against Pep's Bayern (https://spielverlagerung.de/2015/12/13/4-3-3-pressing-lange-auf-remiskurs-bis-bayern-besser-vorrueckt/) and the whole season of them is my personal blueprint of how it should be done. They had a big amount of players, that, similar to Union, didn't really have the quality to play in Bundesliga but with their aggressive and high intensity pressing game they even could trouble Bayern in their own arena and comfortably stayed up. If you're the underdog you always should try to play aggressive pressing, with quick transitions into the spaces these teams leave you (in FM probably more than in real life, but the principle is clear). In the games where you aren't the underdog (like with your game against Freiburg) you need to try and find solutions with your own possession to create chances.

I play with these principles with Southampton right now and the results are pretty solid. I'm pretty sure it's possible to overperform with Union too in similar fashion.

  7. Installed the new beta update and now I wanted to change the mentality 5 minutes into the first game (FM Touch btw rn) and now even in the next game it still says "changes will take effect at the next stop in play". Nearly went out in the Cup with Ajax against a 2nd tier team because I couldn't get on a higher mentality or sub in some of the better players when it was still 0-0 after 60 minutes. Please fix this.

  8. @Experienced Defender @herne79

I basically used the roam from position and more closing down to get a split block for the top 5 players, also Cross Less Often for the Wing Backs.

I didn't pay that much detail on attributes because I'm pretty sure that West Ham wasn't cherrypicked and my players should be better than theirs in general. I'll look into them now though.

I used the Mezzala because it worked perfect for Haidara until now and I thought it would bring a little bit more penetration than a CM/A. Also besides Adams I don't really have a player that could play the Hybrid role of an IFB, maybe Schlager could do it attribute wise, which wouldn't be a bad option tbh, so that he still gets enough games, when I get Szoboloszai next season.

The problem I just have is, that I don't know how to get more possession against these teams that just play on Defensive and pass the ball in their half. I compared the Wolfsburg game to one against Schalke or so which was really similar to their system, where I played with my Attacking and don't care 4-4-2 (or asymmetric 4-1-3-1-1 with Demme in DM strata and Wolf in AM strata) and in that match I had around 370 passes, against Wolfsburg 580. So you see the difference but still only 46% or something possession and losing instead of pretty easy win.

  9. So I'm sorry for being so aggressive, this just annoyed and frustrated me so much, seing the op dominate Arsenal with West Ham and my team that won Bundesliga and Cup 1st season, 1 point short of Bayern and losing to a De Bruyne screamer in the CL Final 2nd season loses against Wolfsburg.

I'll post the set-up underneath, but I'm not really sure what's that wrong with it, having such abysmal results without even getting near the possession numbers of the OP.

Yeh it's all faked and nobody in this thread has found it useful .

Perhaps if you actually posted some detail of your system instead of just whining you might get some help.

There's your problem.  This isn't a "tactic", I made that quite clear and the reason why I didn't post any tactical shots until page 3.  What sucks is that you have failed to understand the basic concepts meaning you have been unable to implement something successfully into your own team.

I appreciate you're frustrated but if you want help this isn't the way to go about it.

Arrogant as always... Wow. I'm not stupid so obviously I applied this to my team. But it's just a fact that it doesn't work and that with a team that went to the CL Final. I took the principles and played a really simplistic 4-3-3 and still maximum 55% possession and losing.
