  1. Guys, thank you for the advise!

I adjusted my tactic based on the suggestions you all made. In the two matches that I played I found that the team played much better attack wise. We created much more chances, then we did before the adjustments. Unfortunaly we had to play Lyon (2-0 loss) and Monaco (2-1 loss)... But in the game against Monaco we even got a higher XG then Monaco.

To answer the question of @Experienced Defender:

My first question is: why have you opted for the cautious team mentality? Because with an already extremely bottom-heavy formation (5122) + lower LOE, such a low team mentality is likely to make you both overly passive in the defensive phase and too sterile attacking-wise (especially as you have only 1 player on attack duty).

I started the season with a flat midfield three but was giving to much chances away. In order to get me defense more stable I shifted more and more against a very cautious set up of the tactic..

My second question: why narrow attacking width, especially as your formation is already narrow? I am not saying that you should use wide width. But starting with normal/default width and then occasionally making in-match tweaks as you see fit is usually the most rational option when it comes to width.

To be honest: it was a suggestion the assistant did before the game I took the screenshot. I was really desperate ;)

Last but not least, what is your idea in terms of the style of play? The lower LOE means defensive football, but what specific type of defensive football are you looking to play? Counter-attacking or more passive (such as catenaccio for example?

Before the reactions I would have said a more passive style of defensive football. But after what I've seen in the two matches I played yet, I would say counter-attacking.

  2. Hi guys,

I'm playing as Auxerre in the season 25/26. Last season I managed to win promotion with a media prediction of 7th. So, one could say that my team has barely the quality to promote from the ligue 2 to ligue 1. After being promoted to the ligue 1 the board give me a transfer budget of, yes, 1M€.... I couldn't create a much better team then the previous season. I'm by far the worst team in the competition. I have already accepted that I will be relegated this season, but will ask you guys if/which flaws my tactic has. Just to learn from it and maybe, in my wildest dreams, avoid direct relegation.

This is my tactic. Latas (playmaker type) and Thuram (b2b type) are my best players. Accompenied by Adamovic (young, promising defender) and Davide (great AF, which scored 8 goals in 14 app.)

I already changed my LWB to WB-S because most of the goal came from crosses at that area. Also some goals came from shots from just outside my penalty area.

I like to hear from you guys!

  3. It happened: Sargent made his first league goal after two games where I tweaked the tactic! We currently play with this tactic. Like you guys expected, the striker is much more involved in play. I also notice better chances for the striker and the IF-S too (cross by the W-A or WB-S and IF-S finishes). The WB-A is also a very dangerous threat now. I will build from here to make Sargent continu scoring goals ;).

  4. Started my long term save in FM21 as manager of Rapid Vienna. In the first season, we finished second, behind the almighty Red Bull Salzburg. Before the second season I bought Josh Sargent. He was transferlisted and I needed a new striker. So far, we are again competing with Red Bull Salzburg for the championship. However, after 13 games, Sargent did not score any goal (he played 11 games) at all in the league. One two goals in the Champions League, which were lucky one out of set pieces. Based on his xG, I would expect him to score some more goals. He is also getting in good positions, but the ball doesn't get in. I'm currently playing him as an Advanced Forward, but also tried other (supporting) roles. Based on his attributes, I would expect him as a goalscorer. For example, passing is quite low compared to other attributes (currently training passing). What do you guys think, which role would be most suitable for Josh Sargent to play as? I also added the formation + TI's that I'm currently using.

    • I want 4-4-2 because that wins everything. Love me some crosses too.
    • Positive because I'm a positive guy
    • Let's go for attacking wingers and also attacking full backs because they're cool and full backs are not defensive now.
    • DLF and AF because I read that on a guide on here 10 years ago.
    • High tempo because Liverpool do that.
    • Wider because we play wingers.
    • Counter and Counter Press sound cool so I'll select those for no other reason
    • Pressing obviously.

This reasoning is quite brilliant! :applause:

  6. Great posts!

I saw that you used the 4411 2DM formation sometimes througout the season. You did mention that you wont go into details for that formation. However, maybe that you can share some basics? About roles and duties / perhaps different team instructions that you used  for the 4411 2DM formation compared to the 4141 formation.

  7. 1 hour ago, Experienced Defender said:

That alone does not make a tactic more stable defensively. You may have changed the formation into a more defensive (bottom-heavy) one, but your setup of roles and duties is far from optimally balanced.

    Alright, thank you!

So you would suggest using a formation that will have more number further up the field instead of the bottom-heavy 5122? Maybe a 343 WB will be more suited for the style of play?

Do you maybe have any suggestions when it comes to the formation and probably the well balanced roles and duties for it? (some tips and tricks would already be great!)

Second, what do you think of the TI's that I've used? I thought these would, at least to some extent, will do what I'm want to achieve.

If so, why then have you opted for this bottom-heavy 5122 formation that is far more suited for defensive football? I don't see logic in that.

Most of all, I wanted to create a more defensive stable tactic by changing my wingers (first post) to wingbacks.

In my preseason, I also played with a 5-2-1-2 formation. Does that makes more sense?

  9. In the preseason of the new season I started to review my team and my possible strength's of my team. After comparing my player attribute scores with the ratings of other teams in the competition, I think me team is best suited to play short passing and they can press really well in comparison to the other teams in my competition. So I created the following tactic to be, like I said in my opening post, more defensive stable. This worked in preseason and in the domestic cup. However, to create chances in the game is another thing. I added the tactic I used the last match I played in the semi-final of the Swedish cup.

My questions to you guys: Am I right that my players are suitable to play the shorter passing game and put pressure on the opponent? And did I translate this well enough in my used tactic? Which changes do I have to make to make the tactic work better or do I need another formation at all?

I added the player profiles of my players too.

I hope you guys can give me some advice how to improve my tactic and help me understand the game better.
