AI Manager complaining that I'm playing my loanee Goalkeeper.. as a Goalkeeper? I get that it's probably the fact that i'm playing him as a Sweeper Keeper, but that's absolutely ridiculous. IT'S THE 4TH DIVISION OF SPAIN, you're telling me he's watching my every match to check if my keeper is playing 2 meters higher up the pitch?

Thing with this is, there has to be some level of difficulty to loans. If you agreed to play a player in a GK role, you're breaking the contract by playing him as a SK.

Loans shouldn't be too easy to exploit, there has to be something that is making you put at least some kind of thought into it.

  2. With a Balanced Mentality combined with some of your Out Of Possession instructions, you're inviting a lot of pressure onto yourself and restricting yourself to just a few chances per game. Are you sure your team is good enough to be able to withstand that kind of continued pressure and capitalize on every counter-attack you get? Personally, I would trim back some of those instructions, Balanced Mentality can already be conservative enough as it is, so when you combine it with Much Lower Defensive Line, Much Less closing down and a Low Block, you start tapping into extremes.

Other than that, your roles look sound, I would only make two slight changes:

    • DLPde -> DLPsu (equalize his individual Mentality with the rest of the midfield, meaning he will defend in a line with the rest of them, rather than drop down too deep creating a gap, and encourage him to bring balls out of defence more willingly)
    • Change one Wsu -> WMsu (one pace-monster hugging the line and spamming crosses can often be enough, a WMsu on the other side might improve your possession numbers and allow you to create chances more methodically, when the counter isn't on)

I do ok but don't find it easy. I always play lower league and can get up to premier League in decent time. Never more than 2 seasons in one league...

Doesn't sound like you're doing too bad!

Other than that, here's some general tips I would give to anyone looking to improve at FM:

    • Learn how to exploit the match engine (aggressive tactics tend to do the best, check out Knap's thread for some inspiration)
    • Look at the bigger picture instead of getting caught up on individual highlights (find out whether you're conceding too many goals or not scoring enough and adapt accordingly)
    • Personnel > Tactics (spend majority of your time on looking for better players, tactics become redundant once your squad is good enough)
    • Do manual scouting instead of relying on your scouts (scroll through youth international teams, top clubs from obscure nations, request reports on players that stand out because of their young age)

Mind you, if you're looking for immersion, these tips might not be for you. In that case, simply take it at your own pace and enjoy the game, but if you're looking strictly for better results, the above is where I'd start. Each to their own, some enjoy playing the game as realistically as possible, others enjoy blasting through seasons and get their enjoyment from outperforming the game.

It would help to see your tactic and players to be honest. I can't recall ever seeing a run of results like that in 30 years so congrats on that. 😂

He posted it in another thread already and it was horrendous, as you would expect. IIRC, a 4-3-3 with a bunch of Playmakers and multiple Advanced Forwards, your typical balls to the wall setup.

    A classic case of...

    dJFwKGg.png

    • Zoungrana: Pacey with decent Traits, however, with Crossing and Dribbling of 5 and 6 respectively, he's unlikely to ever be good enough
    • Salim: Strictly left-footed, so unlikely to be able to play out wide on the right
    • Mohammed: Okayish Pace, but very poor Off The Ball, Dribbling and Crossing, all of which are crucial for a good Wing-Back

Honestly, not the best bunch to choose from, if you're looking for a WB.

Personally, I would look to sign someone better with following characteristics:

    • Acceleration, Pace, Work Rate > 12
    • Off The Ball, Dribbling, Crossing > 10
    • Right Foot > Strong

That would be my starting point, depending on how many options show up.

Is there a way to minimize counters against?

You're likely committing too many men forward/playing a very risky style of football, which can often be counter-productive against teams aiming to sit back and snatch one on the break. Having a holding midfielder and toning things down a notch can not only make you more defensively solid against such teams, but also increase the quality of your own chances, since players will be more patient and won't give the ball away as often.

I was wondering to what extent you can really 'take them by surprise' with tactical changes and adjustments?

People have done experiments on this before and it turns it out actively countering AIs tactics can be quite successful, provided you got versatile enough personnel. You also need a decent understanding of how tactics work of course, so you don't end up shooting yourself in the foot with changing a system that works well generally.

This is one of my favourite threads on this sort of thing.

Sometimes i unwillingly dominate posession and i dont want that.

You're likely dominating possession because of Cautious Mentality, which makes your players cautious with and without the ball.

Here's a thread you might find useful, it explains the effects of Mentality and shows an example of an aggressive low block, which I assume is what you're after:

Im asking myself where should i look to make just a few tweaks to be more effective but not lose my tactic formation if thats possible. Id like to get some advice on this, thank you in advance.

Aside from the obvious, which is that your right flank is completely exposed if you lose possession high up the pitch (FBat + MEZat), you could try making the following tweaks to increase your defensive solidity in tougher games:

    • Higher Line Of Engagement -> Standard Line Of Engagement
    • Remove Counter-Press
    • Remove Counter

These are some minor tweaks which shouldn't change your overall playstyle too much, but could make you harder to play through.

However, although you said you want to keep it, I would definitely give your formation a second though. I've seen people use this shape before and can imagine it working well in attack, but with the formation being your defensive shape in FM, I personally find it completely unrealistic (no team defends in such a lopsided shape). I can imagine big gaps appearing all over the pitch once your MEZ is pulled out of position to close down his right side, which then has consequences for the rest of your formation.

Preamble: 3rd season with Leverkusen, still no trophies. Currently in 2nd place but the xG table would more realistically have us in 4th. We have only the 6th best attack and the 5th best defence. Warning signs are all around.

You could try making some slight tweaks:

    CFsu

    Wsu                        IFat

    CMat CMsu

    Ade

    IWBsu BPDde CDde WBsu

    • CFat -> CFsu: I see IFat as an out-and-out goalscorer and thus like my striker to have a supporting role whenever I use it (perhaps just my personal preference)
    • FBsu -> IWBsu: With supporting Winger keeping width on that side, IWB could focus more on creating overloads down the middle and slotting into the space CMat vacates with his forward runs

I'd also try removing the following instructions for now:

    • Lower Tempo: Shorter Passing already lowers tempo to Standard by itself (Positive Mentality), lowering it even further could A) make your team easy to defend against when combined with Shorter Passing and B) make it easy for high-pressing teams to close you down, since players are taking long time before making decisions
    • Use Offside Trap: might add needless risk for sub-top teams, Higher Defensive Line should suffice when combined with Positive Mentality
    • Trigger press More Often: Slightly More Often should be aggressive enough (Positive Mentality); reduce the number of gaps your team is leaving with closing down

Hope that gives you some ideas.

I've been noticing that my DCs get high ratings (7.5+) even though they play poorly and keep making silly mistakes leading to goals. Is this just me?

Can you post screenshots of their form?

It would be pretty bizarre if they were actually making mistakes leading to goals and still get such high ratings, haven't noticed that myself at least.

Maybe we're just talking about clunky 3D animations that look like mistakes, but actually aren't.

Getting too many players unhappy with their playing time as they are important players/regular starters but rested once every so often when they  are absolutely knackered and can’t possibly play . Seems to be nothing programmed in to make them understand that they are not fit enough to start.

If a player is "knackered", you can talk to them and tell them you're going to rest them. If they're actually unfit, they will almost always agree.

And if that's not an option, telling them right away you can sell them if they wish usually works wonders.

  12. Agree with Tsuru's points, especially with the Poacher - F9 swap, so that you can utilize space a bit more efficiently. On the left, I currently see a big gap between your DLPde and Poacher, and on the right you seem to have F9 dropping into the same space BBM is trying to occupy.

Regarding your right WB, switching him to IWBsu could be a shout, since you already have Rashford keeping width on that side.
