  1. I'm constantly recommended to hire staff as performance analysts for the u23 and u18 teams. Is there even any theoretical point to do that? I can't see any. What would they do other then take wages? The youth teams use first team tactics so nobody's going to tweak them based on analyst reports... Perhaps if you let the youth team managers choose their own tactics they can somehow benefit from analyst reports, but still seems like a waste of money.

    1. Make it harder for you (do this! :brock:)

    1. I do, I play different challenges from time to time with some limitations. But generally that's not how I'd wish to play the game,  imposing artificial limitations on transfers or tactics takes a lot of the fun out for me. Realism/difficulty mods, if they actually work, are a better option, as you don't have to "play badly on purpose".

    Fully agree about this.

The game is only then easy, when you play it in an "easy way".

Play it realistic, write down some homerules and enjoy.

Dont use the tacticforums, dont reload, use some files from majestic or dave (or others) ... live in the world of the fm :)

In other words, the game is too easy, but you can make it harder by artificially crippling yourself. ;-) When you have to make rules for yourself for example for avoiding unrealistic transfers, it's very hard to determine where the line is drawn. Some cases might be obvious but most of the time the transfers you do don't seem that unrealistic. Thinking about my current Chester save as an example, we have now had 4 back-to-back promotions from the VNS to the Championship, and I can't really name any transfers that we have done as clearly unrealistic. It's mostly free transfers of players released by bigger clubs, and a few promising youngsters from clubs in lower divisions than ourselves. The only example I can think of is that Mario Balotelli would have signed for us in League Two, but we didn't sign him because he wasn't good enough anymore for the wage he wanted. We also sold one young player to Newcastle for 12M while in League One, which of course may be considered somewhat unrealistic....

I hadn't come across the smarter AI mod before. Will need to give it a try.

  4. The team is starting to shape up. Managed to sign plenty of Steves to fill our squad, and we're covering most of the positions quite ok now. One problem area is central defense, where we are really struggling to find available Steves with any quality. Played some friendlies already as well, and it's looking quite good, even managed to beat League One Wimbledon! In the first friendly loss we didn't really have any players yet and played mostly with Grey Ones.

I think you misunderstood the question. Esteban is the Spanish equivalent of Steve, and ANGL was asking if you're only signing English Steves, or if you'll consider any regional equivalent for your team.

Oh yes of course, sorry about that!  For myself I'm not planning to (at least for now) to accept equivalent names in other languages. So no Estebans, Stefans, or Stepjans.

  6. As a reductio ad absurdum of a way to make FM more challenging, I joked about limiting transfers to players named Steve. Started thinking that could actually be fun. So here we go, I created the club Steve F.C., based in Stevenage, England (of course), playing the Vanarama National South (re placing Tonbridge Angels.  Only rule of the save is that we are only allowed to sign Steves as players and staff. All original players and staff are removed at the start of the save. I'm also allowing Stevens, Stephens and players with the family names Stevens, Stephens, Stevenson, and Stephenson, in order to have slightly more possibilities. We are also not allowed to sign anybody from future youth intakes unless they are Steves. Should be fun! So make your own club, you can pick any name you want as your limitation. James FC and John FC should be quite doable too!

Said this as a tongue-in-cheek reductio ad absurdum, but started thinking it might actually be fun. So I created the club Steve F.C., located, of course, in Stevenage, England. We are only allowed to sign Steves. Should be a challenge. =) Might extend to Stevens if necessary, let's see.

By playing realistically, I mean if I felt signing a certain player on loan was unrealistic, I wouldn't use the exploit and wouldn't sign them. And if I felt it was unrealistic to the point of buggy, I would report it as a bug. For example, there was a thread here not long ago of someone playing in  the third tier in Italy who had signed a load of youth players from PSG on loan. Rightly, he felt this was unrealistic. He had still done it though. Because if he hadn't, he would have seen it as limiting himself.  That's just one example. Another is that when starting unemployed  on FM21, lots of users are being offered the Wigan job despite having no badges. I assume this is because of Wigan's financial situation. I wouldn't take that job, but there are people who have taken it and then complained that it's unrealistic. I don't get it.

An example : In my current save, my board will not let me hire an outright  scout. This means I have no scouting limits set - where it would usually tell me where I could scout, it says "the board will not allow scouts to be hired" or something like that.  I have hired a coach with scout as a secondary role. I believe this to be realistic as it is not costing anymore than if he was just a coach, and bizarrely I do have a scouting budget set. Now I have hired him, due to a bug, he can scout anywhere in the world. I'm in the Israeli second division and this is therefore unrealistic. I've posted it in the bugs forum and it's under review/been logged etc. In the meantime, I am using self discipline and only scouting players based in Israel at this stage. I am under zero illusions though that some users would use this advantage and then talk about how easy things are because they "refuse to arbitrarily stunt or limit themselves".

On the flip side, if I was gliding through the leagues with 5 straight promotions and little effort, I would summise, as you have, that there was a problem somewhere along the line that allowed me to do that, try and work out where that was, and I would post about that in the bugs forum. Particularly if it was happening every save.

Because it doesn't happen to other people. I have a 25% win rate on my current save and may be relegated. I'm also far better away from home.

I fully agree that these kinds of things are unrealistic and contribute to making the game easy. For me however, the moment I start deliberately avoiding certain transfers or tactics because they're unrealistic, immersion breaks and there's no point in playing anymore.  That's why  SI would need to address these matters. But I'm not holding my breath, it's been the same for years.

And has been mentioned, you simply cannot rise 5 divisions, back to back, without at least some kind of exploit. Game mechanic or otherwise.

This is just untrue unfortunately, unless you define "exploit" to mean any normal usage of the features of the game.

  10. 5 minutes ago, Junkhead said:

As I said, if you are only signing realistic targets and not exploiting the engine or transfers in some way yet achieving 5 straight promotions from non-league to Premier league then Premier League squad building AI is the tip of quite a large iceberg, IMO. Doing that should be nigh on impossible.

Couldn't agree more.  Just mentioned prem squad building as one example. By the way,  what do you mean by "realistic targets", "playing realistically"? I also agree that the transfer system (especially loans) is so exploitable is part of the problem.  Especially in FM20 and FM21 it has been way too easy to beat other (even bigger) teams to key signings, they somehow "prefer" the human manager over AI.  However, the solution to this shouldn't be for me to not trying to sign good players, but instead SI fixing / unbiasing the system.

The fact that it happens regularly as per some users on this forum indicates to me that things may indeed be too easy.

These people - and you - might just be amazing at the game though. I've been playing realistically for 25 years and never done that. Or even come close.

I'm certainly not amazing in the game, like you I have played it since CM days so I'm pretty familiar with it but I've never really had the time or patience to be really in-depth analytical about it. That's why I'd think my experience is very common.

I'm gonna put this thread down again because this became a constant circular argument some weeks ago. But for what it's worth you are a billion percent right.

For me, downloading tactics, wonderkid lists and generally playing unrealistically and then saying things should be more difficult is up there with the silliest things I've ever heard.

It's like playing a console game with a walkthrough open and then complaining it was too easy.

Yes I agree this same discussion is had multiple times each year, and it goes nowhere and nothing changes, so it's rather pointless. My main point is that yes, it's silly to complain about the game being easy if you're playing with Liverpool, downloading super-tactics and buying all the wonderkids, but that even if you do none of those things and start at the very bottom of the footballing ladder using only the tools provided in-game, the game is still way too easy. The only way to make it hard is to artificially cripple yourself by imposing limitations on transfers (only allowed to buy players named Steve, or only Welsh players born on Thursdays), and/or by deliberately using bad tactics.

  12. I want

    1 minute ago, Tyburn said:

But what do you do to make it easier for yourself? Wonderkid lists? Over powered tactics? Player searching to find ‘exactly’ what you’re after?

Its not just about deliberately stunting your progression, it’s also, I think, about not exploiting the system.

I want to be able to use to the tools provided the game. For example, I do use player search from time to time even though it's not very useful in lower leagues when you can't afford the packages. But even at a higher levels, I don't think player search is what makes the game easy, just using scouts (as I mainly do) provides good players over time too. Regarding tactics, I really don't want to have to pity the AI and avoid tactics that work well, that would completely eliminate the whole point of the game for me. So I do try to tinker my tactics to be the best they can, I'm trying to win, not to lose after all. That said, I don't exploit any obvious bugs in the engine, such as the corner- and throw-in exploits that have been seen during recent years. And no wonderkid lists of course, they aren't much use when starting in non-league anyway.

  13. Yes, a thousand times yes, the game is still too easy. The AI is too defensive,  and won't even try to win matches when 1 or 2-0 down with 10 min to go. The AI can't build or maintain their squads, so that by the time my non-league side reaches the premier league after 5 back-to-back promotions, it's met by aging, overpaid, and unbalanced big teams. And I won't accept having to cripple myself artificially to make it more challenging as an answer.

  14. I fully agree, this is incredibly annoying, even straight after a match players often have a full green heart but hovering over gives the text "tired after last match. The whole fitness/fatigue system with the hearts is very messy.

All in all however, it seems to me that the rate at which players tire / get fatigued has been toned down for FM21. There's really no need to rotate, as it seems most of the time players can play 3 matches a week and still maintain a full green heart (could be just because we don't se the actual % like before?), further contributing towards making the game so easy.

That's only partially true. The simple fact is that regardless of the divisional averages a player with passing and vision of 4 is not going to make a particularly efficient DLP. Regardless of the divisional averages a winger with dribbling and balance of 4 is not going to be tearing up and down the wing. A player with stamina and pace of 4 is not going to make a very effective BBM regardless of the quality of the players he is playing against. There is a point (around 5) where an attribute is simply junk whatever level you're playing at and whoever you're playing against. A player can be a standout in his division but if his OTB, passing, dribbling and vision is 5 or below I would avoid any roaming creative roles. Period.

Yes that's of course true in practice, because probably in any league in the game a 4 or 5 in those attributes can be considered very low. But let's get hypothetical and imagine an in-game drunken pub league where 99% of the players have a 1 for all attributes. There a player with OTB, passing, dribbling and vision of 5 IS going to be excellent in roaming creative roles.

I'm playing currently in the Vanarama national with Chester, and I have a player who plays as a regista in a 4-3-3 (that also includes a mezzala on attack). He has 11-13 in all attributes highlighted for the role and performs brilliantly.

  16. There is no such thing as lower league tactics in FM. There is only tactics. Everything is relative to the level of the other teams/players in the league. Nothing is preventing you from using a tactic with a libero,  a regista and a trequartista with fluid movement if you wish and have the suitable players in terms of ability relative to the other players in the league.

i respect your opinion my good lad but let me to disagree. At least for me its easier to have Liverpool and take all trophies and stay on the top all times than manage Wealdstone and try to reach the Premier League or Ch L and Europa League

Well at least it does take slightly longer with Wealdstone. ;;) It's also true that once you get to the top, you never ever fall off the top again.

  18. The hidden personality attributes, do they / can they improve over time as the player gets more experience and gets older? Or is mentoring the only way? The reason I started to wonder about this was that my star striker was reported by my ass man to "have trouble handling the pressure of first-team football", and indeed he hates big matches and performs horribly in them and generally towards the end of the season.  I take this to mean his pressure attribute is very low. His personality is "fairly determined" though. Mentoring is unlikely to make a difference anymore, since he's 23 and quite influential in the squad.
