  1. I don't know if this would work, so I'd appreciate any thoughts.

    The Rivals Challenge

You start at a relatively big, top flight club. Start as manager, and do your best to ruin them as much as you can. Sell their best players cheap, overpay for underperformers, sow discord among staff and players. Try to do as much damage as you can before being sacked, if you're patient you can do it gradually. Bonus points if you get them relegated. Eventually you will get sacked, and now your aim is to get a job at a lower division club. Ideally a team near to the first one, but it may be hard enough to get any job at all. Anyway now your aim is to get this club above the first one. Once you finish above the first team in the league, you win the challenge, but you can carry on to solidify the rivalry.

    Bonus points:

The current manager of the first club dislikes you
Players in the first club dislike you
Your team regards the first team as rivals
The first team regards the new team as rivals

    Population Experiments Part 2.2

    https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2840373456
Part 2.2. Some big changes have taken place! Borehamwood city council have decided to build a state of the art stadium befitting of a city of its size (20 million residents) and 20 attraction. With 75k capacity (70k seated), retractable roof, undersoil heating, state of the art facilities and pitch in excellent condition, surely it must prove tempting for a team to move in? If that were not enough, Solihull Moors now own a similarly state of the art stadium in Borehamwood. The obvious thing would be to move in, will they abandon their current Solihull home? Or perhaps they will sell or lease to a team nearer the facility?
Oh, and I forgot to mention, London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Bristol, Manchester and some other places got hit by nuclear missiles in a terrorist attack, reducing their populations to less than 1000 essential aid workers. Sadly for Chelsea, their Stamford Bridge stadium was hit directly, leaving only an irradiated shell of its former self. With radiation burns and mutant rats the attractiveness of these cities has dropped drastically to 0. Luckily however, millions of people survived, and have taken up residence in Dover and Aldershot, boosting their populations to over 20 million each, somehow.
This kind of catastrophe raises some poignant questions, such as how will this affect the football? Surely with all these seismic events occuring something interesting will finally happen?

I've simmed 30 years, up until August 2051. First of all, Chelsea took up temporary residence with West Ham, and rebuilt Stamford Bridge. The stadium that is, the pitch remains in a terrible state, just rubble from the explosion.

Boreham Wood FC remain a Vanarama National League side other than a couple of short lived relegations. Borehamwood Stadiums 1 and 2 remain completely unused.

Borehamwood city has produced one global superstar however, Michael Kelly was bought by Real Madrid for £176 million.

    image.thumb.png.8394f50b3b2f2792bcd7ae4bc3a8fa6b.png

Aldershot Town have also been consistently in the Vanarama National League, with one relegation in the 32/ 33 season, being promoted again for the 35/ 36 season. Dover Athletic have remained in the Vanarama League South, with a couple of relegations to lower divisions.

Meanwhile at the top of the Premiership the winners have all come from our nuke-decimated cities of Liverpool, Manchester and London, with the exception of Newcastle who won some titles in the 30's to 40's. Leicester have managed some second and third places in 'recent' years too.

    image.png.77b48cddb30fd88431f9422a73eb2a4a.png

As for England, it's hard to tell if there's any effect, as England tend to be a bit overpowered in FM. However they won the World Cup in 2022 and 2042, and lost the final in 2034 to Spain.

    image.png.0415c736f60621ef9a22df1b6158b48c.png

They have done better in the Euros, winning in 2032, 36 and 48.

    Conclusions

Although these experiments didn't seem to produce any interesting results for me, I thought it was worth sharing them for others to try, maybe there is something else I should have looked for, different changes to make etc. Please let me know any thoughts or results you have. I also hope that maybe SI can factor in population a little more in the future. Although of course it's difficult to implement without making China and India dominate the world in every save.

Thanks for reading, I enjoyed doing these experiments a lot and I have a lot more ideas to make in the future, so keep an eye on my steam workshop if you're interested.

  3. Population Experiments Part 2.1
Part 2 of the Population Experiments. This time I've taken an existing town, Borehamwood in Southern Hertfordshire, England, and boosted its population from roughly 30,000 to over 20 million. How will this affect the small Vanarama National League club Boreham Wood FC? Will their attendances increase? Will the region become a hotbed of new talent, providing future stars for Englands national teams?

Why Borehamwood? The decision was a bit random, I wanted a small town so the population increase would be noticeable. Boreham Wood FC are in the Vanarama National League, so there's room for them to be promoted, but also to be relegated to the Vanarama League South and not drop off the map. In retrospect perhaps I should have chosen a town/ city like Nottingham, which has two teams so more chance of one of them capitalizing on their new potential supporter base.

I've simmed up to 2035. There are a number of players (newgens) from Borehamwood, 45 to be exact, compared to 6 players from Boston, England, which has a population of 35k. So FM certainly takes the population into consideration when selecting newgens birthplaces. For comparison, there are 44 players from Liverpool, 43 from Manchester, and 196 players born in London.

As for Boreham Wood FC, they have not seemed to benefit from their population boost. They were promoted to League 2 for the 26/27 season, but came 24th to be relegated again.

    image.thumb.png.d7595a2839e39192acd1ca0ee5cb10d4.png

They have broken some of their attendance records, but only with typical attendances for their level.
    image.png.b87b0f9478b12c531444b6d981052a97.png

So again, sadly, there doesn't seem to be much difference here, at least not within 15 years. However, perhaps in 30, 40 or even 50 years the change will make a significant impact. As always, I've uploaded the editor file to the Steam Workshop. If you try this yourself, please let me know your results.

  4. Population Experiments Part 1.2
Apologies in advance, this one didn't get great results either (5 years into the experiment at least).

Anyway in this part I've built a state of the art stadium in the new city of Argleton, imaginatively named the Argleton Stadium. It has a capacity of 70,000, 65,000 seated, retractable roof, very good condition, undersoil heating, and is owned by the local council until 2023. The closest ground is Wigans DW Stadium. Will any clubs be tempted to move in? Will it host any games?

    image.thumb.png.612f5f7527243846a43204a100d4a24b.png

I've simmed up until 2026, but sadly no teams have moved in, and it has not hosted any matches. Any ideas how I could encourage its use without actually moving a team there, let me know. In the meantime check out Part 2, coming soon.

  5. Population Experiments Part 1.1
In this short series of experiments, I want to see the effect of population in Football Manager. For the first part, I've created a new city in the Lancashire region of England called 'Argleton'. The population of this city is 20 million + inhabitants. For context, London's population is 8 million, making this by far the biggest city in England, the UK or Europe, and among the top ten biggest cities in the World.

    image.thumb.png.570c6fac0260f18669ac310925398be1.png

There are no football clubs or stadiums in this city at this stage, the aim is to see whether any clubs emerge there or move there. For the former, as far as I know football manager has no inbuilt function to create new clubs, and for the latter, I don't think football clubs will move cities, although it does happen very occasionally in real life.

Secondary to this I was to see if new players will emerge from this city, statistically they should do as the city has such a massive population. Will other Lancashire clubs see a boost in support? Will England itself benefit from this massive population boost?

3 years in, the results are a little disappointing, no players (newgens) were born in Argleton. In previous tries when I've holidayed for 5 or even ten years the result has been the same.

Although this part of the experiment didn't yield any interesting results, I've uploaded the editor file for anyone else who wants to try it and have a look.

If this is in the wrong forum section, Im sorry and you can move it to the right section.

As Liverpool FC manager and during January 2023, I get a news item saying Australian investor Rory Cash looks set to possibly buy out the club.

I can't find anything on him on google. So my question is, who the hell is this Rory Cash?

**UPDATE: Rory bought out the club for £1.46B But still, who is he!?!?

    Must be Laura Cash's husband..

    Okay okay I'm leaving!

The game keeps improving year after year, but the quality of the regen facse keep getting worse. Why? This years regen faces are the worse I've seen in years. The regens look like inbred serial killers with unibrows.

    1.PNG

:DA serial killer called 'Skinner' is perfect. But with the eyebrows here, is this a graphics card issue maybe? I have a laptop which runs FM22 but with less than recommended spec, I get a little bit of glitchiness in match graphics, maybe the same applies here?

Not sure where else to post this, but it would be super cool to see some support for the US lower leagues in the game. The USL and NISA have really been taking off recently, and I think there is a lot of interest in the leagues.

    Just my two cents!

Yes! I know we shouldn't be focused solely on marketing, but that is a massive potential market overall (arguably more so than the MLS alone). And there could even be a feature where a random USL team becomes a franchise and gets added to the MLS.

    5. How do you spend a manager's salary? I usually set it to a minimum in order to unload the payroll. And where to spend it? This is an undoubted omission! I would like to have in Football Manager at least some kind of platform where you can spend your earned money. Even 10 years ago, the FIFA manager had the opportunity to donate money to the club, buy real estate and transport, buy shares on the stock exchange. It would also be great to buy a club and own it. Well, if someone thinks that this is too much, then you can simply add the ability to choose at the beginning of the game, whether it is necessary or not.

I know SI don't want to do anything with salary, so sorry for bringing it back up, but maybe they could have a thing where you can use earnings to buy some extra manager attire, like a different suit or something. It seems like a compromise to have something without affecting the game or needing a massive algorithm of living expenses per country/ city etc.

  10. I've always loved the wiki format for reading about football competitions, teams and games. As such I think (hope?) some here may be interested in presenting their saves in this format in a wikia site (now called fandom.com). As a rough example of how this looks, here are some links to football pages in the alternate history fandom.
    FIFA World Cup (Differently)

FIFA World Cup (An earlier World Cup of Football)

FIFA World Cup 2014 (UK at the World Cup)

As well as saves, there would be categories for experiments, challenges, fictional teams and leagues, and so on. I can do some basic editing, but this would need to be a community project to keep it active. So please tell me if you would be interested, what kind of content you'd like to see, what you might add to it, and also if anyone has experience with wiki editing and is up for helping out please let me know.

One last thing is at any point if SI wants to take over we'll hand over the keys, as it would be great to have it integrated with this site/ forum at some point. Maybe it needs to be a bit more fleshed out first though. I hope the format it presents won't take aything away from discussion here, because that's the last thing I want. The idea is to have the wiki pages as a supplemental resource for people discussing their saves and stories on this forum. There are talk pages on wikia but it's better if we discuss here and refer back to the pages. Anyway just my thoughts, I'd be glad to hear yours.

  11. Or indeed more C:S in my FM? Both these games are very moddable, and share at least a couple of elements in common. For instance I could build a town or city, and the population of that city could be exported into an FM database, that sort of thing. Or using the matchday addon for C:S maybe I could export the results to FM or something? This probably isn't possible, but maybe something like exporting a stadium model to C:S. Any ideas welcome.

Agreed! This is essentially a stepping stone towards doing that (albeit with a lot more manual input!). I actually made the suggestion that a whole new game mode could be done that populates the whole game with newgens. Would be a fresh experience!

I've never used it, but i assumed the 'use Fake Players' does something like that? It would also be great if you can save your save file as an editor file. But probably a bit of a nightmare on the coding end of that..

Hiya, for FM2022 I'm going to be working on an editor file that fills out all the 3 levels of the Japanese J-League with 'generic' fake players, i.e. I'll just give them a name, a nationality and a contract. I'll probably give them all a fixed date of birth and CA/PA/rep as well (so that they show up in the game without having to manually select Japanese players to show up), and possibly positions (I'll have the game generate all these for me). I wouldn't go through all this trouble, but I think with a project like this it'd be worth releasing it here or on the Steam workshop, perhaps as a hold-over until someone releases a file with all the real J-league players. The consistency would probably be nice so that people have a similar experience, and I can give some advice and pinpoint players with a high PA, and so on.

Only reason I bother is because without a pipeline of players in the domestic leagues the Japanese national team and the Japanese clubs that play in the AFC Champions League are much, much less competitive than they are in reality.

I'm thinking I should probably add staff to these clubs too, but I'm having trouble deciding how many staff members a team should have, which ones, etc. Do I simply give them all a manager, an assman, a chairman and some directors, a few coaches and some scouts? It's not quite as simple as giving them squads, because I'll simply give every club a complement of 36 players (J-League matchday squads have 18 players, so I simply multiplied that by two), whereas different levels of clubs would have better or worse depth in terms of staff members, surely? I could use some advice!

It would be great if you could auto-populate teams with regens in the editor. It would basically be the same thing that happens when you start the game and it adds players and staff, but you can have a consistent database to share.

  14. I want to be able to watch the goals, or better yet extended highlights from all games in a league. My manager is unemployed, with only one league loaded. I have tried to watch goals or game highlights but I can't seem to view them. I'm probably doing something wrong, or I have the wrong setting. I try to holiday one day past the game, then click 'Watch Goals' or 'key highlights' etc but nothing seems to load. The game comes up paused, hitting spacebar just advances time a day, clicking 'paused' does nothing. What am I missing?
