  1. Ascoli season 3 summer transfers Very happy with this window, we definitely got what we wanted. As said earlier, Andrea Ghezzi joins on a free to back up the midfield. He's professional and a solid young player. Walter Segovia joins as a future left back for us, he'll be backing Ranieri up this season and maybe the next, and then hopefully overtake him. Zabaleta joins as a backup to Barbieri and a mentor as model professional. Kiril Despodov is a player who some here have signed and was great in FM19. He'll compete with Sernicola for the MR position. Aleksandar Kolarov will play as a box to box midfielder for me, as Padoin is reduced to the bench. He's lacking a little in the physical department but his qualities on the ball and long shots are just superb. He'll not play every game, but hopefully he'll give us a lot. And lastly, our super signing. It was hard to find a striker that fit the bill for us and was a significant upgrade on Trotta. Then it came to my attention that Dusan Vlahovic had moved back to Partizan a season ago, and knew there was a possibility to price him away from them. He's my far most expensive player, both in transfer fee and wages, but I think he'll pay it back. His agent insisted on a 24m release clause which I can live with. Pescicolo went out on a loan and if I can hold on to Vlahovic for two seasons, Pescicolo might be ready by then. Alternatively, hopefully I can give him a new contract in a few months. I think this is my best XI by now: And to add, a target for me if Vlahovic leaves for his release clause. As UK is out of the EU, this Scot is a NEU player and I couldn't sign him this season.
  2. Interesting – never noticed that. Will keep an eye out and maybe do some tests.
  3. The finances took a sharp turn upwards after promotion – as the expenditure is very low; no debts and low wages. Haven't really spent any real money so far either, coming out in the green from the transfers both in season 1 and 2. I took some of the unambitious ones to the first team just for mentoring. One of the GKs is backup now as well and another the second backup. Everyone of these promoted players are available to play with u20s or u18s.
  4. Ascoli 2nd season review Overall a very fun season where we beat the bookies and were clear of any relegation battle for almost the entire season. This is the final position: Squad stats, season awards and overall best 11: The squad is in good shape but I've been planning some offloading. I will try to get rid of Eramo (MC), Pucino (DR) and Mota (ST) as I think I can replace them with either younger players from within or new signings. Unfortunately I did not at all manage to replicate the form of Dany Mota @Adzke had, but different systems and different players around him must have played a part. He played 25 games (8 starts) and scored only one goal. The budget for next season is very nice indeed. I need a goalscorer as my top goalscorer was Sernicola with 10 goals from the MR position. Ironically I also might add a new MR, either with potential or one who can knock Sernicola out. A left back is also on the shopping list, and then anything that takes my fancy.
  5. Ascoli 2nd season youth intake Nothing special to mention; got a nice looking professional keeper and then a few players I signed to bolster my u18s. Signed Orlandi, Hutchinson, Giannini, Rinaldi and Alivernini. Orlandi, who might become my backup keeper next season: To keep helping developing my talent, my first training facilities upgrade is coming up. That was made available by our solid financial position, contributed by our low wage bill and small debt.
  6. Ascoli 2nd season Jan window Slow January – bought one promising midfielder and got rid of two who weren't playing. Clementi, a perfectionist, was napped from Pisa, and looks good. We'll see what happens with him. I also secured another midfielder, who will arrive on a free next summer – Andrea Ghezzi, a really fun, professional player. Finances are relatively secure now so I'm making my first facilities upgrade.
  7. Ascoli mid 2nd season update The season started off rocky and we struggled to find form, still collecting points here and there. After game 10 we managed to find the defensive balance we needed, and stopped leaking goals. With that results started to get better, and we're even unbeaten in 9 in a row now. Still not scoring a lot – but that's fine, we're just creating a solid base here and hopefully solidifying ourselves as a Serie A team. A rock at the back has been Armini, who's loan I've extended until the end of next season (I've done the same for his defence partners Ranieri (DL) and Gravilon (DC), and Sernicola (DR/MR)). So, we're sitting comfortably at 9th at the halfway of the season, sailing into January with no pressing needs. I'll probably hold on to the little money I have, unless something very appealing comes up or if any of my players are plucked away from me. Finances are slowly but surely rising for about a million a month with the TV money coming in very handy. A little gem from my youth system, Alessio Pescicolo, has gotten a little gametime this season (played the last game in Serie B last season), and can hopefully keep on improving. After the good run I was handed a new contract.
  8. That's an insane record – he's a backup for me as I wanted to give Trotta a chance in Serie A after having been the top scorer in Serie B. He's playing a little on the flank for me as well. It definitely isn't! I've played around 11 or 12 games now and am on 8-10 poins, can't quite remember. Hovering around the relegation zone, as expected.
  9. Ascoli 2nd season transfer window Did not get a lot of money and the wage budget is quite tight, but that's the way I want it. I want to give most of the players that helped me get promoted the chance to prove themselves in Serie A. I decided to not renew some loan player who didn't feature a lot last season, but we paid the clause to get Barbieri (DR) in from Novara, and he's a fantastic prospect. Scuffet will be our first goalkeeper, with Nicola Leali having finished his loan. Carles Alena will be our star player, and starts at AMC. Keres Masangu was available on a free, wanted very low wages and has a good upside. Originally I wanted him to be a backup but I didn't get another BBM I liked so he'll probably start a lot. Dany Mota has performed very well for @Adzke's Reggina side, so when he was transfer listed for just over half a million I jumped the gun and signed him as a backup for Trotta. Our best 11 now:
  10. Ninkovic is my captain and he has become a team leader, yes. Raffaele Pucino is my vice captain and he is a highly influential player, not a leader. Sernicola's attributes aren't great, but he has nice PPMs and performs very well on the flank, along with having a perfectionist personality. Bear in mind that he's a DR I trained to play MR because of an injury crisis. Cheers mate! It was Serie B though – still quite tough having to play 5 games!
  11. Ascoli 1st season review Finishing the 1st season with a few screenshots from the end of the season. Ask for specifics if you want and I'll oblige! First season in Serie A since 06/07. My best 11: Finally got some team leaders in! Final league position + playoff tree. Reward for top goalscorer in the league, Marcello Trotta: Squad overview: Rather small budget but there is something to be worked with. Hopefully the balance of –5m will get better soon.
  12. Correct, which made it even more nerve-racking!
  13. Ascoli 1st season Serie B playoffs In the preliminary round of the 6 team playoffs we face Trapani, who were the overachievers of the season and ended up in 5th place. This is just a single game, where we play away to the higher placed team. Waiting for us in the 2-legged semi finals were 3rd placed Perugia, with their talisman Christian Capone eagerly waiting to prove his worth to his parent club Atlanta – he's been fantastic this season and I have my eyes on him for the next season. First leg: Second leg: It is very fitting that I am facing Livorno in the playoff final. Does anybody remember this post I made 10 days ago before starting the save? Well, this is destiny, right? What's even more, these teams are fierce rivals: The final is two-legged. The first leg is already played: I still haven't played the 2nd leg as I've been writing this up, let's hope for the best. Starting the game now...
  14. Ascoli 1st season update We managed to squeeze into the playoffs where we'll play Trapani. Not too optimistic, but not too stressed about this either. Of course I'll try to win every game and gain promotion, but thinking about the long term I'm not sure it's beneficial for us to go up as the 8th placed team in Serie B... In other news, we've extended Armini's loan until the end of next season. I've not been successful in extending Barbieri's loan from Novara, so we may have to pay his 1.9m optional clause to secure his services for the future. The kid's a massive talent.
  15. Ascoli 1st season youth intake Kind of a rubbish intake. Will only be signing two of these players I think (Chiarucci and the Romanian goalkeeper Paveliuc). Chiarucci actually looks quite good, if he develops well he might become a member of the first team eventually, depending on Ascoli's status in the football world in 3-5 years.
  16. Thanks all for the recommendations on Padoin – this thread is very active! Generally I am a low transfer guy, wanting to establish a team of 24-28 year olds and then start to add younger players and more experienced ones into the mix, as I like to have a large age range. @Weston makes a good point that the young lads I'm having tutored now by Padoin will probably not feature for me in the long term, but they might help with the general atmosphere in the club and the transmission of strong personalities through the the slow process of squad overhaul. One of the most fun things about FM is the tough decisions you have to make, and this is one of them. I have to stick to my principles, and I will be rejecting the offer. Although I have a good depth in midfield, quality behind the first 2-3 players is quite lacking, and I'd prefer to free up some wages and get some cash in by losing 2 of the backups then to lose Padoin. Thanks again all for your advice!
  17. Ascoli 1st season Am in March now and received an offer I don't know what to do with. An UAE club (which means he'll leave immediately) has offered up to 300k for the 36 y/o Simone Padoin. 300k is great money for me (balance is currently -2m), he is the highest paid player at the club on 12.25k p/w and he's declining rather quickly. Only two other players are on over 6k p/w so 12.25k is very high. However, he is a model citizen (a great tutor) and has been a stalwart in the Italian game for years, playing about 400 games in Serie A and almost 90 of them with Juventus. He is also my best player if we go by the stars (around the 3rd–4th best in my opinion though) and performs well in my setup. Another hangup in this is that his midfield partner Piccinocchi leaves after the season, so if I sell Padoin I'll have two midfield positions to fill up. What do you guys think? I'm sat in 7th currently so I may get into the playoffs but there's no rush to go up on my behalf, don't think I'll have the team and platform for Serie A next season.
  18. Yes, by the end of January. Sassuolo's asking price of 800k was a bit too steep for me so I managed to extend his loan to the end of next season, with no wages paid which is great for me. Not really, at least that's not the plan! I have Christian Andreoni and Raffaele Pucino as my DRs now, they are 27 and 29 years old and both are on over 2.5k p/w, which I think is a little too high. Andreoni is out for the season and I suspect I will get rid of him after that. Barberi, who I just got in on loan, is just on loan for this season but I might extend that if I can or try to buy him, as I don't see Sernicola as a right back after his performances on the flank. So it will probably be Pucino + hopefully Barberi, if not him then Sernicola can back that position up of Pucino picks up a bad injury.
  19. Ascoli 1st season Jan window First, we suffered quite a blow when we didn't manage to secure a new deal with Mario Piccinocchi, our DLP – but he wanted a big contract I couldn't give him with the financial situation at the club, so he'll leave at the end of the season. I also sold fringe players Nahuel Valentini (DC) and Giacomo Beretta (ST) for a combined 200k (they were on 7k p/w combined which was quite handsome for fringe players). I replaced Valentini by getting forum favourite (never tried him) Nicolo Armini on a loan from Lazio and Beretta was replaced with Ricardo Matos from the u20s. I also terminated 3 loans of players who were either not playing or on wages I wanted to get rid of. I also released 2 or 3 players on handsome wages to free up some more space there. Another player I got in on loan with an optional buy clause of 1.9m (probably won't activate that high a clause) is the promising Tommaso Barbieri from Novara, who will come in as backup DR for Christian Andreoni who picked up a bad injury and won't play much for the remainder of the season. I extended the loan deals of Luca Ranieri (DL), Sernicola (DR/MR) and Gravillon (DC), so that they expire at the end of next season. That removes some of the concerns for the next season. Overall, just some cleaning and trimming done.
  20. Ascoli mid 1st season Muddling along in mid table, splitting the results pretty evenly between wins, draws and losses. That's what I expected this season and I'm fine with that, as going up would not have been ideal with this squad. I have kind of settled on an XI which I think is rather balanced, but by moving Ninkovic to the AM strata leaves me with too many AMCs and too few LMs, so that's something I might address in the upcoming transfer window. Other than that, I can't see any holes that desperately need plugging and will rather do transfers with the next season in mind. Might look for a few expiring contracts and make a list of loan players for next season. The squad hierarchy is starting to shape up, but so far without anyone stepping up as a team leader. I suspect Brosco and/or Padoin might do so soon. Leonardo Sernicola, a player on loan from Sassuolo, was someone I was going to use as 2nd or 3rd string right back until I could terminate his loan in January, but with RM's Michele Cavion's injury, Sernicola got an unexpected run in the team and has been our best player along with our striker, Trotta, this first half of the season. I'm considering making Sernicola's stay permanent, will negotiate with Sassuolo this window – there's no clause attached to the loan but I will not be shelling out over 500k preferably. We'll see. In other news, finances are pretty strict and the wage budget is too tight. I'll get rid of 2-3 players, maybe loan players who I'm paying wages for, soon. And lastly, I'm quite liking the look of the youth intake preview here. Would love to get a promising DC and GK.
  21. Yeah, I guess you could influence it a bit by manipulating playing time and giving out big contracts with important squad status to players you want at the top? Haven't tried it out though. Gravillon's contract ends in the summer 2021, so that's after the 2nd season. I'm aiming to loan him again the next season, and if he develops well I'll try to get him on a free then (hopefully with the lure of Serie A football -- we'll see). United's Italians was a fun experiment. The most disappointing development of them for me is definitely Kiko Macheda, thought he'd turn out very good.
  22. Well done keeping up to date on all the saves! I have only played a few more games (still mid-table, think the record is 3-3-2), so I have only seen one change to the hierarchy -- I now have two highly influential players. Have never seen it this empty either, it was actually quite hard to pick a captain, as I tend to want to pick players who have been at the club for at least 2 years (preferably more), but almost all of the squad joined a year ago, only a few of them 2-3 years ago and they weren't really the leader types. Gravillon is a great player, and one I'm hoping to get back on loan next season as I want to keep quite a tight core of the team for the first few years at least. Yes, Petrucci is the former Man Utd player. He was an absolute beast for me in an Ipswich save in FM12, so it's nice to see him again, even though he's not the same player he grew to be back then!
  23. Ascoli Just starting season 1 after having fiddled around with the team in pre-season. Had the transfer window disabled as I always do -- I find it better to get to know the team before making sweeping changes. However, before I joined a lot was done, with 16 new players joining the club. The season has gone off to a mixed start, with 4 points from 3 games in the league (including games against favourites Benevento and Empoli though) and sadly we went out of the cup against Serie C team Pro Vercelli. The squad seems to be playing itself together, with no current team leaders and only one highly influential player. Overall, the squad is not as well balanced as I'd like and does not really allow me to play the football I wanted to. I've used gegenpress and counter attacking football in FM20 so far so I wanted to try a possession style now, which will take time. I don't have any solid BPDs and the amount of loans is high. This is my preferred XI and the tactic I will use most often, with tweaks for bigger or smaller games or in game management: My key players going into the season (in my opinion): The base for building a future here is solid, there is no big dept and the balance is currently in the green. However, I will have to make shrewd signings in the first few seasons if I am going to move this club forward.
  24. Let's see if I can do anything for this club.
