Exeter spend three average seasons in the Championship before making the play-offs in their fourth, but Newcastle prove too strong over two legs. Just. The play-offs are avoided the following season and Exeter get promoted as runners-up. Early season form is patchy, but the capacity at St. James Park has been expanded.
